Page, Catherine. "Investigation of the cytogenetics of marine and terrestrial gastropods." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 1985. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/3431/.

Full text
Abstract:
The investigation of the chromosomal variation in populations of the land snail Cepaea nemoralis (L.) marine snail Nucella lapillus (L.) is presented. The first study (Part 1) concerns the investigation of the karyotype of C. nemoralis in populations from a region of the Berkshire Downs (U.K.)in which there are marked area effects for both the visible and allozymic characters. The present investigation has shown that there are inter-populational differences in chromosome structure. The differences fall within the range found previously in several widespread populations in the British Isles, No

Abstract:
Investigations were made examining the relationships between gastropod species richness and abundance across 20 phosphate and 20 natural lakes in Central Florida. In additional to lake category, age of phosphate lakes was used to determine if phosphate lakes ever approximate natural lakes. Additional physical, chemical, and biological parameters, including chlorophyll a, Ca, secchi, phosphorous, conductance, fish predation, and recreational lake use were investigated in order to determine if they affected gastropods with lake age. Comparisons were also made between gastropod species richness a

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the genetical and morphological diversity of plaited door snail (Cochlodina laminata). While small distribution ranges are typical for most species belonging to genus Cochlodina, the distribution range of C. laminata covers most of the European continent, except for its coolest and warmest parts. It has been previously suggested that this species might in fact be a complex of several species and large genetical as well as morphological diversity has been mentioned - however, yet undescribed - in previous studies. Abstract:
Reconstruction studies of seasonal rainfall utilizing stable isotope based proxy approach suffer from the limitations of time resolutions. Conventional methods and archives limit the achievable resolution to annual scales. However, high resolution reconstruction (seasonal to sub-weekly scale) can be achieved in proxy records where growth rates are high enough to leave spatial signatures in an organically or inorganically deposited layer such as growth bands. In this study, aragonitic skeleton of the gastropod Lissachatina fulica (Bowdich, Giant African Land Snails) is investigated with an aim
