Abstract:
'Subversions: the Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett' focuses on six of Terry Pratchett's twenty-one Discworld novels, which are representative of two different subject areas of the series: witches and the city of Ankh-Morpork's Watch. While taking a closely analytical approach to Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Guards! Guards!, Men At Arms, Feet of Clay and Maskerade, it also makes some assessments of the Discworld novels as a whole. The field of criticism specifically to do with Terry Pratchett is currently a very limited one, but a range of secondary material is brought to bear on the subjects of fantasy, fairy tale, postmodernist fiction and fiction in general. There is particular reference made to the thought of Mikhail Bakhtin and to various critical interpretations. The main concern is to develop a reading of Terry Pratchett that is informed by some of Bakhtin's wide-ranging ideas. At its initial level, the argument combines Bakhtin's emphasis on dialogue with Pratchett's personal terminology, in claiming that the Discworld novels 'dialogise the diodic'. The author of the Discworld novels coined the word 'diodic' as a child, to describe electrical connections which required a diode. Such connections were implicitly one-way; they only worked through the diode. In writing the Discworld novels he took relationships that would normally be thought of in terms which he considered to be diodic and made them work in two or more ways. This thesis contends that the Discworld novels subvert by way of the distorting lens of fantasy, parodically dialogising (or 'bringing another voice to') conventional viewpoints, in order to interrogate the idea that there can be a satisfactory unitary way of seeing.

In questo elaborato vengono presentate la traduzione di un estratto di un romanzo di Terry Pratchett, The fifth elephant, e l’analisi di questa traduzione, realizzata con l’aiuto di un corpus costruito ad hoc per questa ricerca. Nel corpus sono state inserite le traduzioni italiane di otto romanzi differenti, scritti dallo stesso autore, Terry Pratchett, e tradotti da tre traduttrici professioniste. Questo corpus è stato ideato appositamente per coadiuvare il processo di traduzione dell’estratto e per esemplificare un metodo di analisi del lavoro di traduttori professionisti. Questo tipo di analisi, nota come translational stylistics, ha lo scopo di identificare le differenze esistenti a livello stilistico tra i traduttori, cercando nello specifico quegli elementi che permettano di identificare e distinguere tra loro i lavori di un determinato traduttore da quelli di un altro, a prescindere dal testo di partenza. Questo elaborato si apre con la descrizione tecnica di un corpus, spiegandone gli utilizzi nel campo della ricerca e i metodi di costruzione. In seguito viene fornita una panoramica dell’autore e delle sue opere, e vengono fornite informazioni sulle traduzioni in italiano di questi romanzi e sulle traduttrici che le hanno elaborate. Viene quindi presentata la traduzione dell’estratto, seguita da un’analisi dei problemi traduttivi affrontati durante il processo di traduzione e di come il corpus abbia aiutato a risolvere e superare queste difficoltà. Infine viene presentato uno studio di caso sulla translational stylistics che mostra le differenze a livello di stile esistenti tra i lavori di traduttori diversi.

Dans cette thèse, nous abordons les liens entre la fantasie, genre aux contours encore fluctuants et le théâtre en nous intéressant aux adaptations des romans de Terry Pratchett au théâtre. Terry Pratchett est un auteur britannique contemporain, réputé pour sa longue série de romans de fantasie, The Discworld Novels, qui comporte à ce jour plus d'une quarantaine d'ouvrages. Ses œuvres ont été adaptées de nombreuses fois, sous diverses formes : pièces de théâtre pour la scène mais aussi pour la radio, films, comédies musicales, dessins animés et même jeux vidéo. Cette recherche se concentre sur les dramatisations, dont le grand nombre de mises en scène ainsi que leur fréquence incitent à s'intéresser à ce phénomène. Notre analyse s'ouvre sur un examen des caractéristiques de ce genre, ainsi que des traits distinctifs de ce corpus, son ton humoristique, sa forte intertextualité et sa dimension satirique. Dans le passage de ce genre au théâtre, il lui faudra se plier aux codes scéniques sans perdre sa spécificité. Le processus d'adaptation apparaît comme une lecture sélective, une interprétation des œuvres originelles mais aussi comme une recherche théâtrale, l'élaboration d'une esthétique atypique
In this these, we tackle the links between fantasy, a genre with still fluctuating limits, and theatre, taking an interest in the adaptations of Terry Pratchett's novels to the stage. Terry Pratchett is a contemporary British author, famous for his longue series of fantasy novels, The Discworld Novels, consisting nowadays of more than forty books. His works were adapted several times to different supports: plays - for theatre and for radio - films, musicals, animated series and even video games. This study relies on the dramatizations, whose numerous and frequent stagings encourage the researcher to look into this phenomenon. Our analysis begins with the examination of the characteristics of this genre and of this particular a body of works, known for their humour, their high intertextuality and their satirical aspect. During the transformation from novels to plays, these works will need to take into account theatre conventions without losing their particularity. The process of adaptation appears to be a selective reading, an interpretation of the original works, but also a theatrical research and the construction of a atypical aesthetics

This essay is a creative study of how characters are depicted in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, based on three novels of Pratchett, translated to Swedish: Häxor i Faggorna (1994), Svinvinternatt (2005), and Levande musik (2001). The creative part will be a short story written by me, where I put the well-known character Näcken from Swedish folklore into Pratchett’s imaginary world Discworld. I will use two academic texts about Näcken, Näcken (2008) by Jochum Stattin and Erotiska väsen(2010) by Ebbe Schön, as a base for my creative writing. To study how Pratchett writes and uses allusions in his works, White Knowledge and the Cauldron of story: The Use of Allusion in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld by William T. Abbott and The intertextual use of the Fairy Tale in Postmodern Fiction by Kevin P. Smith will guide me. The purpose of this essay is to study how Pratchett changed folklore characters to fit into his world.

Abstract:

Terry Pratchett, writer of humorous, satirical fantasy, is very popular in Britain. His Discworld series, which encompasses over 30 novels, has witches as protagonists in one of the major sub-series, currently covering eight novels. His first “witch” novel, Equal Rites, in which he pits organised, misogynist wizards against disorganised witches, led him to being accused of feminist writing. This work investigates this claim by first outlining the development of the historical witch stereotype or discourse and how that relates to the modern, feminist views of witches. Then Pratchett’s treatment of his major witch characters is examined and analysed in terms of feminist and poststructuralist literary theory. It appears that, while giving the impression of supporting feminism and the feminist views of witches,

Pratchett’s witches actually reinforce the patriarchal view of women.

La première consiste d’un roman de fantaisie satirique, Incompetent Gods (écrit en anglais) et la deuxième d’un essai à propos de ce genre. Incompetent Gods - Dans une dimension parallèle, créée par les dieux écœurés de l’athéisme régnant dans la nôtre, immortels et mortels vivent ensemble en cacophonie. Leurs relations sont étroitement surveillées par la compagnie Dieux Inc. qui emploie et contrôle la plupart des divinités. Son PDG, la reine Louhi Pohjola, court un grave danger car Goblin et son souverain-fifre Japhet essaient de se débarrasser d’elle afin de conquérir le monde. Ce récit satirique, en utilisant la transvalorisation de mythes anciens, la parodie de lieux communs présents en fantaisie, la transposition de dieux dans un contexte corporatif et des jeux de langage, se veut une critique de notre société, de nos valeurs et de nos utopies. This thesis is made up of two parts. The first one, Incompetent Gods, is a short satirical fantasy novel written in English. The second part consists of an essay about the genre. Incompetent Gods - In a parallel world, created by the gods sickened with the atheism in our dimension, mortals and immortals live together in cacophony. Their relations are monitored by Gods Inc., a huge multinational that employs and controls most divinities. Its CEO, Queen Louhi Pohjola, is in grave danger, for in order to conquer the world, Goblin and his side-king Japhet are doing all they can to get rid of her. By devaluing old myths, parodying the clichés of fantasy, transposing gods into a corporate context and playing with language, this satirical fable aims to critique our society, our values and our utopias. De la satire en fantaisie - This essay (in French) presents a literary study of the works of Terry Pratchett, one of the most famed authors of contemporary satirical fantasy, and a reflection on the creative process that answers two questions: how to ridicule one thing while evoking another? In the last twenty years, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series has become very popular. Pratchett's success hinges in part on his use of allusion, in what Tolkien called the "Cauldron of Story," and what Pratchett refers to as "white knowledge." This paper explores the Discworld novels and illustrates Pratchett's use and success of storytelling through a few key directions: folk tales, fantasy literature, movies, and rock music. Pratchett has received limited critical review, mostly of a negative nature, while producing a strong literary series, one crafted with both obvious and subtle recognition of his genre's sources. While standing on the shoulders of giants, Pratchett both respects and scrutinizes the myths and stories that construct our reality. Critically, Pratchett's fiction deserves more respect and closer study; this paper attempts to give him his due.

Abstract:
The history of translation has been built on the notions that the translator either leaves the writer alone and moves towards the reader (domesticating the text), or leaves the reader alone and moves towards the writer (foreignising the text). These strategies have been called many names, but the translator has always been faced with the choice between domesticating or foreignising the target text. This study considers the options available to a translator when translating the proper nouns and neologisms in a fantasy novel. The translator should not move towards and stand next to the reader to create a target text that is unrecognisable compared to the source text. At the same time, the translator cannot remain next to the writer and thus not change the proper nouns and neologisms to ensure that the target-text readers can understand all – or most of – the potential meanings. If the translator does not move closer to the readers, they cannot have the same experience as source-text readers. This study looks at the translation theories, strategies and procedures that can be applied when translating proper nouns and neologisms used in Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods. It is limited to the study of the neologisms that act as proper nouns, and does not look at other neologisms in the novel. The study identifies translation procedures that retain the meaning potential of the proper nouns and neologisms in the source text in the process of translating them into an Afrikaans target text. It compares the procedures that may have been used by the Dutch translator, by Venugopalan Ittekot, of the novel, Kleingoderij, into Dutch with the procedures that are identified to be used by a translator of the text into Afrikaans. This study identifies the procedures most appropriate to a possible translation of proper nouns and neologisms in Small Gods to Afrikaans in order to retain the meaning potential. The translation procedures that has been identified are addition, cultural adaptation, internationalisation, literal translation, neutralisation, substitution, transference, transliteration and transposition. These procedures can be used to attain equivalence at word level and in such a way that the meaning-potential is retained.

This study entails a case study of the translation of the novel The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett to Afrikaans. The purpose of the study is to determine which translation strategy and procedures can be used to successfully transfer the unique identity of a certain group of characters to the target text. A study is made of literature written on the subject of dialect translation as well as the translation of names to identify the strategy and possible procedures that can be applied to this translation. Identity forming elements from the source text is categorised and examples from each category is identified for analysis. By applying the identified strategy and procedures on the identity forming elements, certain sub-procedures that are used predominantly to portray the identity of the characters in the target text, are identified.

Abstract. This thesis is a close reading of Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods in the framework of postmodern literary theory. Small Gods is a fantasy novel, which has the history of a made-up religion called Omnianism as its central narrative. The motivation for this thesis came from the feeling that Pratchett’s parodical approach could be a front to a deeper message, which could be uncovered in a close reading. In addition to searching for the postmodern themes in Small Gods I tried to look for the reasons for these themes surfacing in the novel. My close reading found numerous postmodern themes throughout the novel, and the parody Pratchett makes of Christianity was the most prominent postmodern theme present. Another theme that appeared a lot in the novel was the idea that while the Omnianism is a parody, it also holds a mirror to Christianity, highlighting the flaws that can be found in both religions. I found out that the parody and celebration of fragmentation of faith and authority of ages past seem to be rooted in Pratchett’s apparent atheism. The thesis suggests that Pratchett’s other fictional religious institutions could be worth studying, as well as his political parody, using this thesis as a frame of reference.Tiivistelmä. Tämä tutkielma on lähiluku Terry Pratchettin kirjasta Pienet Jumalat postmodernistisen metodologian pohjalta. Pienet Jumalat on fantasiakirja, jonka keskiössä on kuvitteellisen uskonnon, Omnianismin, historia. Motivaatio tähän tutkimukseen syntyi ajatuksesta, että Pratchettin parodia kätkee taakseen syvemmän viestin, mikä voisi selkeytyä lähiluvun ansiosta. Postmodernististen teemojen etsinnän lisäksi pyrin löytämään Pienistä Jumalista syitä näiden teemojen esiintymiselle. Lähilukuni paljasti monia postmodernistisia teemoja läpi koko teoksen ja Pratchettin parodia kristinuskosta oli teoksen kantava teema. Toinen yleinen teema teoksessa oli ajatus siitä, että Omnianismi ei ole pelkästään kristinuskon parodia, vaan heijastaa kristinuskon huonoimpia piirteitä, tuoden ne esille. Tutkimus paljasti, että teoksessa esiintyvä parodia ja menneisyyden uskon ja auktoriteetin hajoaminen vaikuttavat juontavan juurensa Pratchettin ilmeiseen ateismiin. Tutkimuksen perusteella Pratchettin muut kuvitteelliset uskonnot voisivat olla houkuttelevia tutkimuksen kohteita tämän tutkimuksen pohjalta, kuten myös hänen poliittinen parodiansa.

Abstract:
The aims of this thesis were to look at and analyse three of Terry Pratchett’s novels — The Light Fantastic, Interesting Times, and The Last Hero — from the point of view of established literary theories, specifically those pertaining to humour and parody, and see how well the texts in question can be said to follow those theories. The three works were chosen because they comprise the story-arc of a particular set of characters. Of primary importance in this thesis are the concepts of incongruity, superiority and defamiliarisation, of which the first two have been widely considered to be the basic mechanisms of humour, the third being a notion that is descriptive (as well as prescriptive) of literary texts in general and parody in particular. The three ideas combined create the concept of familiarisation, which is new as far as the name goes, although as a literary formulation it is not entirely without precedent. As far as the background literature that was used goes, the primary sources for theories of humour were Laughter by Henri Bergson, Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious by Sigmund Freud and Linguistic Theories of Humor by Salvatore Attardo. Of great help were also Jeroen Vandaele’s articles Humor Mechanisms in Film Comedy and Narrative Humor, although they ultimately did not get much space in the finished thesis. Other important sources regarding literary theory were Viktor Shklovsky’s article Art as Technique, and Parody by Simon Dentith. Based on a reading of the previously mentioned works, it can be said that Pratchett’s approach to humour does indeed fit together passably well with the canonical notions of comedy in western literary history. Furthermore it may be noted that the humour in question is largely of a positive nature — as opposed to a destructive one — in the way it deals with the material it parodies. It should, however, be pointed out that the analysis in this thesis focuses exclusively on so-called referential humour, and that its conclusions cannot necessarily be extended beyond those limits
Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena oli tarkastella kolmea Terry Pratchettin romaania — The Light Fantastic, Interesting Times ja The Last Hero — yleisesti hyväksyttyjen kirjallista huumoria käsittelevien teorioiden näkökulmasta, ja selvittää missä määrin kyseiset teokset noudattavat aiheeseen liittyvien teorioiden antamia sääntöjä ja viitekehyksiä. Tärkeitä käsitteitä tutkielmassa ovat inkongruiteetti eli yhteensopimattomuus, superioriteetti eli ylemmyys, ja defamiliarisaatio, joista kahta ensimmäistä pidetään yleisesti huumorin perusmekanismeina; kolmas on kirjallisuutta ja parodiaa laajemmin kuvaava idea. Nämä kolme teoreettista käsitettä yhdistettynä muodostavat familiarisaation, joka on uusi ainakin nimensä puolesta — hieman epämääräisen idean muodossa se on kyllä löydettävissä joistakin aihepiiriä käsittelevistä aiemmista teksteistä. Lähdekirjallisuudesta tärkeimmät teokset olivat huumorin saralla Henri Bergsonin Laughter, Sigmund Freudin Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious sekä Salvatore Attardon Linguistic Theories of Humor. Abstract:
This project sits within the field of popular culture, exploring the ways in which people read Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. The primary research objective was to ascertain whether political values encoded within the comedic text would be understood by its readers. An iterative mixed methods approach was used to gauge audience engagement. Of the potential audiences, there was an audience segment who rejected the text on generic (fantasy) grounds. Of those with a greater investment of time, in dramatic production, this led to resentment and a refusal to impute any significance to the text. Audiences of the productions who invested less time rejected the fantasy genre but accepted the significance of the text as they experienced it. Subsequent on-line research on the more engaged fan audience showed different levels of engagement. Among fans, there was a minority who enjoyed the text but rejected any real world significance. More often the fans described their Discworld favourites in terms that reflected a connection with their own lived experience. Specific themes emerged which were discussed in relation to the text: The accessibility of the comic protagonists is discussed in relation to models of masculinity in late modernity. Vimes was admired by all demographic groups, often as an aspirational figure, with 64% nominating him as a favourite. Transtextual relationships with the gothic articulate a female voice within the Discworld and shows how fans relate their own mortality to the Discworld character Death. The theme of personal social responsibility recurs in the Discworld and is discussed in relation to the macro level politics of terrorism and conflict. Discworld fans tended to be socially and politically active, the majority of the fan respondents felt that key socio-political themes were evident in the Discworld diegesis.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation was to critically analyse Terry Pratchett’s Johnny Maxwell trilogy in terms of three areas, namely Pratchett’s use of various fantasy techniques; how comedy and satire function as distancing mechanisms; and how fantasy and comedy function in accordance with Erikson’s and Bettelheim’s theories concerning identity formation in adolescent and child readers. The primary aim of this dissertation was therefore to provide a literary reading of Pratchett’s trilogy, Only You Can Save Mankind (1992), Johnny and the Dead (1993) and Johnny and the Bomb (1996). However, it also acknowledges the possible didactic and developmental benefits of the books. The trilogy is entertaining, exciting, witty and child-friendly (Baldry cited in Butler, James and Mendlesohn, 2004:41), but it is also clear that Pratchett endeavours to challenge his child readers by presenting everyday situations from foreign and unusual perspectives. This dissertation argues that, as Baldry states, Pratchett ‘expands the thinking of his young readers with new ideas or unconventional ways of looking at familiar ideas’ which will ultimately help them consider their own lives in alternative and perhaps even more meaningful ways (quoted in Butler, James and Mendlesohn, 2004:41). The idea of ‘distancing techniques’ is vital for this study, because it proposes that readers can be transported from their Primary Realities (in which they live and function on a daily basis) into Secondary Realities or worlds which are unlike the Primary Reality in form and composition, but not unlike them in the way they function. Once this removal has taken place, bibliotherapists argue that readers are able to look back upon their primary world with new insight into their sense of industry and identity and also into the way their primary reality functions and the way they function within it. J.R.R. Tolkien (1985:35) explains that ‘…fact becomes that which is manipulated by the fantasy writer to produce a keener perception of the primary world and a greater ability to survive in it’. Owing to Pratchett’s specific comic brand of fantasy, a discussion of his comic and satiric techniques is also presented. Part of this discussion again concentrates on the ability of comedy to act as a distancing mechanism, while another discusses how Pratchett uses comedy to satirise certain aspects of society. As Bergson (1911:17) states in his book, Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic, laughter is a way of ‘correcting men’s manners’. Pratchett thus makes use of various comic techniques to mock and ridicule certain features of society, such as its obsession with television, its materialism, or its obsession with computer games. This research is important as the fantasy genre is often considered to be mere popular fiction, to which parents and school teachers are frequently averse. However, with the increase in sales of fantasy works over the past decade, especially in adolescent and children’s fantasy, study of the genre and its possible influence on readers is becoming increasingly necessary. This dissertation undertakes to show that fantasy works can be both complex and satisfying literary works while they also have a positive influence on child readers.

A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Translation Johannesburg, 2016
The aim of this paper is to investigate how the different types of humour in Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens have been translated into French and German as De Bons Présages and Ein Gutes Omen, respectively. This study applies frame semantics to analyse how the translators recreated the humour of the ST in the instances that they were able to do so. This theory examines how context is created and what expectations arise from an individual’s knowledge of context i.e. their understanding of the context and what the reader or hearer associates with it. The novel involves several subplots, but the same humorous elements such as puns, parody and an invented archaic variety of English appear throughout the book and it is the aim of this study to determine how these elements were dealt with by the translators. I will compare the two translations and determine how, and if each translator was able to recreate the same frames that made the ST humorous.

Abstract:
Terry Pratchett, author of the best-selling Discworld series, and winner of multiple literary awards, writes satirical fantasy for adults and children. The academic community has been slow to accept Pratchett's work as worthy of notice. Factors that contribute to this reticence include writing fantasy, writing for children, a high volume of work, and popularity in general society. This thesis will provide a comparison between Pratchett's work and that of Evelyn Waugh by focusing on their academic satire, shedding new light on Pratchett's work from a literary perspective, thus lending greater value to his Discworld series as a collection of novels with measurable literary value to the academic community.

В данной магистерской диссертации исследуются окказионализмы, созданные Терри Пратчеттом, в сопоставлении с их русскими эквивалентами. Рассматриваются способы конструирования окказиональной лексики в оригинале и переводе романов «Мор, ученик Смерти» и «Мрачный жнец», определена частотность использованных способов перевода. В русле существующих теорий эквивалентности доказана зависимость используемого способа перевода от степени семантической нагруженности индивидуально-авторского онима или реалии, а равно от типологической принадлежности каждой окказиональной единицы.
This master's thesis studies the occasional words created by Terry Pratchett as compared to their Russian equivalents. The ways of constructing occasional words in English and Russian variants of the novels "Mort" and "Reaper Man" are considered, the frequency of the applied translation methods is defined. Within the existing theories of equivalence, the dependence of the applied method of translation on the degree of semantic meaningfulness of the individual author’s word is proved, as well as on the typological peculiarities of each occasional lexeme.
