The physics associated with transmitting and receiving a telemetry signal at a frequency greater than an octave above the current operating band is such that an end-to-end evaluation of the complete data link system (both the transmit and receive side) is required. In 2012, Airborne Instrumentation Systems Division (AISD), Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) was sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) to develop a couple of short-range air-to-air missile platforms that use a specially-designed warhead-replaceable telemetry section incorporating three data links: (1) an S-band link to transmit Time- Space-Position Information (TSPI), (2) an C-band link, and (3) an additional S-band link where the latter two are transmitting the same pseudo-random bit sequence at the same effective radiated power level. Flight testing will consist of a series of captive tests conducted over land and water. The tests will be performed under a variety of conditions to induce potential issues caused by multipath, atmospheric ducting, fast-slewing of the tracking antenna, and large propagation losses. Flight testing will culminate with the live-fire of a missile over a military land range. This paper describes the continuing efforts of this test program from these series of flight tests, thus quantifying the performance of C-band telemetry data transmission as compared to the S-band.

During the era 2000-2002, the U.S. Air Force C-17 Follow-on Flight Test Program (FOFTP) transitioned to total bulk data collection employing the Veridian OMEGA™ Intelligent Multiplexer (IMUX) and associated Series 3000 Telemetry Processor. Advanced planning for the data management was deficient; engineers and analysts were overwhelmed by the actual quantity of instrumentation data collected, at a rate of 2- to 3-gigabytes per flight test hour. In fiscal year (FY) 2003, the Test Director initiated comprehensive planning for management of the C-17 data elements. Including the bulk instrumentation data collected, this plan also addressed the management of programmatic information and correlation from the test definition program phase through the archiving of test reporting Information. The envisioned end-state of the C-17 test data archive effort, also referred to as the C-17 Enterprise Test Data Management System (ETDMS), seeks to provide the C-17 Test Team with cradle-to-grave data management at a level unprecedented in the flight test community and is described herein. Once funding was received, the C-17 Integrated Product Team (IPT) has aggressively moved into deploying the C-17 ETDMS at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) located at Edwards Air Force Base, California. Five modest objectives were set for the effort at initiation; these were: 􀂉 Objective 1: Establish C-17 Technical Library; Complete Deployment of LiveLink Distribution System 􀂉 Objective 2: Improve Data Analysis (Telemetry) Toolset and Products; Train Users 􀂉 Objective 3: Modernize Legacy Databases/Applications (Measurands, Calibrations, Generation of the Test Parameter Requirements [TPR] Document) 􀂉 Objective 4: Fix the Test Planning and Test Point Tracking User Interface 􀂉 Objective 5: Implement the Approved ETDMS Framework The C-17 ETDMS will link the many geographically separated users of C-17 test results in near real-time. Thus, providing the program decision-makers with the information required to support the current worldwide combat operations tempo by joint force elements as exhibited during the recent deployments and sustainment of operations in the Southwest Asian AOR. Collaterally, the C-17 ETDMS will support the efforts of our co-located NASA-Dryden colleagues seeking to improve the abilities of our National Airspace System (NAS) to support industry initiatives such as aircraft health monitoring and “call-ahead” maintenance planning. Currently ahead of schedule and within projected costs boundaries, the C-17 ETDMS will provide government off-the-shelf (GOTS)/commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions to the C- 17 test community during FY 2005.

Airbus is authorized to use S-band for Telemetry transmission until 2015. In October 2011, the decision was taken to move to C-band in 2013, to cope with Airbus development aircraft planning. The objective was a real challenge for 2 main reasons: C-band channel was not characterized in Airbus transmission environment and it was necessary to validate the propagation performance for Flight Tests uses. The selected solution is based on Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (COFDM) modulation. There was no existing solution so it has led the Airbus Test Centre to drive the development of its own C Band solution. C-band telemetry at Airbus has been tested and evaluated in flight from April 2012. The first goal was to check the coverage and the impact of the bad weather condition. Besides, it was necessary to characterize the channel to choose the optimised parameters for the waveform in the Toulouse Blagnac environment. This selection of parameters allows the high quality and increased data rate required for Airbus Telemetry to be reached. The test results consolidated the choice of a COFDM modulation, when given the high sensitivity to multipath of usual Frequency Modulation in the airport environment full of buildings and aircrafts. Moreover, it has been possible to reach a similar quality to the S-band telemetry systems, thanks to a fine tuning of the waveform parameters, and tracking system. Deployment of the system by modifying 8 reception antennas and 12 development aircrafts was done over a span of 4 weeks in January 2014. No impact on Airbus A350 certification campaign occurred due to close collaboration with Flight Test Operations. The new Telemetry system enables an increase of telemetry capabilities in the future, especially the data throughput, simplified remote control and monitoring. This experience is an opportunity to set up a new standard.

Wilson, Zachary David. "Flight Test Data System for Strain Measurement." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2019. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/2121.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the design and evaluation of two devices to be included in the next generation of the family of devices called the Boundary Layer Data System (BLDS). The first device, called the Quasi-Static Strain Data Acquisition System, is a continuation of the BLDS-M series of devices to be known as the Flight Test Data System (FTDS) that uses a modular approach to acquire non-flow, quasi-static mechanical strain measurements. Various breakout boards and development boards were used to synthesize the device, which were housed by a custom PCB board. The system is controlled by the SimbleeTM System on a Chip (SOC), and strain measurements are acquired using the HX711 analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and acceleration measurements are acquired with the ADXL345 accelerometer. The Arduino IDE was used to program and troubleshoot the device. The second device, called the Dynamic Strain Data Acquisition System, is a laboratory proof-of-concept device that evaluates various methods of acquiring dynamic strain measurements that may be used in future FTDS designs. A custom PCB board was designed that houses the microcontroller and the various passive components and ICs used to acquire and store strain measurements. The system is controlled by the Atxmega128A4U microcontroller, and measurements are acquired using the AD7708 external ADC and the on-board ADC of the microcontroller. Atmel StudioTM was used to program the microcontroller in C/C++ and to troubleshoot the device. Both devices were tested extensively under room temperature and low temperature conditions to prove the reliability and survivability of each device. The quasi-static data acquisition system was validated to acquire and store measurements to a microSD card at 10 Hz, with a peak operating current under 60 mA. The dynamic data acquisition system was proven to acquire a thousand measurements at 1 kHz and store the data to a microSD card, with a peak operating current under 60 mA.

Over the past few years, papers have been presented relating to the design and development of a telemetry section used to compare the performance between S-Band and C-Band telemetry links. In addition, the flight test plans to make this comparison have been discussed. Captive Carry Test Flights (on a F-18 fighter jet) over the NAVAIR Sea and Land Ranges at Point Mugu and China Lake were conducted during the April-July 2014 timeframe. In addition a Live Fire Test Flight over the Land Range of the specially outfitted missile was performed in July 2014 as well. This paper will discuss these series of flights tests and provide a performance assessment of the data quality between the C-Band and S-Band telemetry data links. In addition, lessons learned from the various test flights will be included as well. Due to publication deadlines, the results will be summarized at the actual conference.

This thesis generalises the results of Cornut and Vatsal on non-triviality of C. M. Points on quotients of Jacobians of Shimura curves in infinite towers of ring class fields. The proof uses methods of Cornut and Vatsal. The main new ingredient, which appears in the search of a new parametrization taking into account the Galois action, is the use of representation theory of GL2, in which the test vectors in the sense of Gross and Prasad play a prominent role

Changing from L/S-Band to C-Band requires not only new equipment. Even the characteristics of the new frequencies just as the new frequency environment are a challenge for the operations in this bands when changing from a well-known frequency environment to a unknown new one. This paper describes the way used at Airbus Defense and Space Flight Test Ground Station to get experience with new equipment and to learn more about the new environment. Repeatable and comparable tests allowed training for the operators and the optimization of the equipment and procedures with the new environment. Although many of the problems or features observed during the tests where expected in advance, but even unexpected results could be identified.

This thesis is a part of the Local Hawk student project where the overall goal is to develop a Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (AUAV). The project was initiated by Kongsberg Defence Systems (KDS) and is developed in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). In an AUAV it is necessary to have a guidance system in order to be autonomous. To be able to test guidance principles in practice without risking the Local Hawk airframe the need of a ground based test platform became apparent. This thesis is the development of the Local Bug Test Platform. The Local Bug is based on a R/C car and utilizes electronics used and developed in the Local Hawk project. In order to understand the system behaviour, vehicle modelling is discussed and two models are presented. One of them is used in a SIMULINK simulator design for the Local Bug. The simulator is used to ensure the correct controller behaviour before it is tested on the real system. Phoenix II is the backbone of the Local Bug electronics and is used to gather measurement data, log data to memory and execute controller algorithms. Custom made C-code is used as a framework providing all the functionality needed. A introduction to Real-Time Workshop is given, and a step-by-step guide on how to use RTW generated C-code on the Phoenix II for controller purposes.A heading controller is designed and used in combination to two different guidance algorithms. The Line of Sight algorithm aims for the next waypoint regardless where the vehicle is positioned relative other waypoints. A Cross-Track Error algorithm with look ahead distance functionality focuses on minimizing the vehicles distance from a desired path. Both algorithms successfully guides the vehicle trough the test route visiting all the waypoints. The Local Bug is now usable as a test platform for controller algorithms. Measurements are logged to memory making it possible to analyse the performance after a test has been conducted. The overall functionality is found to be satisfactory and the Local Hawk project now has its desired controller/guidance test platform.

Abstract:
Test coverage criteria introduces metrics to measure the adequacy of a test suite as well as defined rules for performing software testing. This makes it possibly to formally define requirements for testing in various industries where software quality is essential, such as in aviation. This bachelor thesis aims to study the effectiveness of 11 different coverage criteria in two ways. Firstly how effective they are at finding faults and secondly their cost effectiveness. Test cases were created for each individual criteria for three different programs. The effectiveness of these test cases was then measured using mutation analysis. The results revealed that the scale of the experiment was too small to truly draw any conclusions regarding effectiveness. It was however shown that due to the “test noise” effect, the effectiveness of the test criteria can differ notably. It was also shown that test coverage criteria alone may not be sufficient in order to perform efficient testing.

Abstract:
C/C composites are widely used as structural parts in oxiding environment. Yet, they become very sensitive to air oxidation for temperature higher than 400°C. This work proposed two methods to improve their oxidation resistance :(i) the fiber/matrix bond is increased by modifying the properties of the carbon fiber surface, and (ii) a fraction of the carbon matrix is substitued by an oxide phase.Introduction of new constituants leads to the creation of new material interfaces. Thus, the influence of the interfaces on the macroscopic properties of the composite is evaluated by physico-chemical and macroscopic characterizations

The procedure of testing the implemented software is important and should be an essential and integrated part of the development process. In order for the testing to be meaningful it is important that the testing procedure ensures that the developed software meet certain requirements. The testing procure is often controlled by some sort of test specification. For many companies it is desirable to automate this procure. The focus of this thesis has been to automate a small subpart of the manual tests today performed related to SAAB:s air traffic management system. The automation has been achieved by studying the existing test specification which involves a lot of manual operations and to write software that mimics a few of these test cases. The thesis has resulted in a test framework which automates a small subset of the manual tests performed today. The framework has been designed to be scalable and to easily allow more test cases to be added by the personnel when time permits. The test framework has also been integrated with SAAB:s existing CI/CD workflow.

The Department of Defense (DoD) anticipated the eventual sell off of a portion of the Aeronautical Mobile Telemetry (AMT) frequency spectrum (from 1755-1780 and 2155-2180 MHz), prompting the telemetry (TM) community to start designing and testing systems capable of operating in a portion of the C-Band spectrum (4400-4940 MHz and 5091-5150 MHz) several years ago. On December 17, 2014 the NAVY targets office at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) launched the first in a series of C-band and S-band instrumented Orion vehicles to provide RF transmitted data products for ground system collection and in-depth analysis. This paper presents the first C-band Transmitter Experimental (CTrEX) high-dynamic, spinning vehicle test at WSMR and summarizes the initial findings along with a path forward for future CTrEX rocket tests.

Abstract:
Primary sensory neurons are heterogeneous by myriad of molecular criteria. However, the functional significance of this remarkable heterogeneity is just emerging. Here we used our recently generated ginip mouse model to selectively ablate the cutaneous free nerve endings MRGPRD+ neurons and the C-Low threshold mechanoreceptors (C-LTMRs). Ablation of GINIP-expressing neurons led to a significant decrease of formalin-evoked first pain and a complete absence of the second phase pain response, without affecting thermal or mechanical sensitivity. Knowing that MRGPRD+ neurons are dispensable for formalin-evoked pain and that these neurons play a critical role in acute and injury-induced mechanical pain, our data demonstrate that formalin-induced pain hypersensitivity is primarily transduced via C-LTMRs, and suggest that C-LTMRs and MRGPRD+ neurons play antagonistic roles in transduction of acute and injury-induced mechanical pain. Therefore, our results suggest that C-LTMRs act as strong modulators of chemical and mechanical pain signals

A flexible, modular method is needed to connect test range data systems to central real-time computer networks. This is achieved by the development of a real-time, networked, VME-based range interface system. Flexibility is achieved by a modular hardware and software design. The modular hardware consists of standard network interfaces, COTS VME interfaces, and a VME single board computer (with an onboard PCI bus). The modular software is implemented in C++ using the VxWorks real-time operating system. This paper describes the conceptual design and development of the Modular Range Interface (ModRI).

The ability to dynamically configure our ground stations to support a wide array of fighter/attack aircraft programs has lead McDonnell Douglas Aerospace (MDA) to seek alternatives to commercially available ground stations. Cost effectiveness and fast response time to these widely varying needs is paramount to staying competitive in today's current defense environment. VME (Versa Modular European) architecture has provided a platform that fulfills these requirements while requiring a minimum of in house designs which can be expensive and time consuming to implement. MDA is now in its third generation of VME based ground systems. These systems are highly extensible due to their reliance on software and programmable hardware systems and are inexpensive due to their use of commercial grade VME cards. This paper describes the current generation TM/Quicklook Ground Station and the Data Editor (Preprocessor) Station and it also provides a perspective of how the designers solved some common problems associated with VME architecture. These stations are now in use at MDA test sights in St. Louis, Patuxent River NAWC, Edwards AFB, and Eglin AFB.

Abstract:
We discuss the design and analysis of a code generator for C++, implemented in the Umple model-oriented programming technology. Umple adds UML constructs and patterns to various base programming languages such as Java and PhP. Umple code generators create code for those constructs, which can include UML associations and state machines, as well as patterns such as immutable and singleton. Base language methods are passed through unchanged along with the generated code. Creating a C++ code generator for Umple posed many challenges, all of which are discussed in this thesis: We had to focus on the appropriate C++ idioms and stylistic conventions to follow. We followed a test-driven development process to ensure that the resulting code was correct. To evaluate the work, we compared our C++ generator with those in other tools such as ArgoUML and IBM Rational Software Architect. We conclude that our C++ generator is superior in many ways to these widely used tools because it is more complete and generates better quality code.

Introduction: Children?s own perceptions and accounts of their asthma diagnosis have proved to be reliable and relevant to disease control. Objective: The aim is to validate the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Childhood Asthma Control Test (c-ACT) in children aged between 4 and 11 years. Methods: The investigation was divided into two stages: The first stage comprised the translation and linguistic adaptation of the instrument, while the second consisted of testing the psychometric properties of validity and reliability. Results: A total of 105 participants were included, aged between 4 and 11 years. Validity: all correlations between the total score and items on the questionnaire were significant and obtained values of r = > 0.3. There was no correlation between the total score of the questionnaire and lung function. The controlled asthma group showed significantly higher c-ACT scores than those of the uncontrolled asthma group (controlled 22?2.9 VS uncontrolled 16.3?5.3 p <0.001). Reliability: The Alfa de Cronbach coefficient for the total c-ACT score was 0.677 (CI95% 0.573-0763). In the assessment of sensitivity to change, the effect size was 0.8 and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.598. No floor or ceiling effects were observed in the sample studied. Completed: The Brazilian version of the Childhood Asthma Control Test proved to be valid and reliable.

Telemetry data from flight tests are normally plotted using MatLab™ or other third party software. For most of the trajectory and flight parameters, a static 2D or 3D line graph does not provide the proper data visualization that can be accomplished with 3D software. Commercial 3D software can be expensive and difficult to customize, and writing custom software using Direct3D or OpenGL can be complex and time consuming. These problems were overcome using C# and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) to quickly and easily create a 3D Telemetry Theater and Trajectory Visualization Tool to dynamically display actual and simulated flight tests.

Abstract:
In the aviation industry, the use of software development tools is not as easily adopted as in other industries. Due to the catastrophic consequences of software errors in airborne systems, software development processes has rigorous requirements. One of these requirements is that a code standard must be followed. Code standards are used to exclude code constructions which could result in unwanted behaviours. The process of manually ensuring a specific code standard can be costly. This process could be automated by a tool for static code analysis, however, this requires a formal qualification. This thesis evaluates the process of qualifying a tool for static code analysis in accordance with the requirements of the major aviation authorities EASA and FAA. To describe the qualification process, a literature study was conducted. To further explain how an existing tool could be put through the qualification process, a case study of the existing tool Parasoft C/C++ test was conducted. The results of the literature study show what processes must be completed in order to qualify a static code analysis tool. Importantly, the study shows that no requirements are put on the development process of the tool. This was an important takeaway as it meant that an existing tool could be qualified without any additional data from the developer of the tool. The case study of Parasoft C/C++ test showed how the tool could be configured and verified to analyze code in accordance with a small set of code rules. Furthermore, three documents including qualification data were produced showing how the qualification process should be documented in order to communicate the process to an authority. The results of the thesis do not provide the full picture of how a tool could be qualified as the software, in which the tool is used, is considerations the are specific to the software the tool is used to develop still need to be taken into consideration. The thesis does, however, provide guidance on the majority of the applicable requirements. Future research could be done to provide the complete picture of the qualification process, as well as how the process would look like for other types of tools.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Laboratory biomarkers are important adjuncts to clinical data in diagnosing neonatal sepsis. Available diagnostic tests often provide results 6 to 48 hours later. A bedside C-reactive protein (CRP) test may be able to exclude or diagnose sepsis within minutes. Objectives: The objectives were to validate the Alere AfinionTM point of care test (POCT) CRP in a tertiary neonatal unit against the gold standard CRP assay in use by the National Health Laboratory service and to determine the difference in time to obtaining a result between the two systems. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted between February 2015 and June 2015. Neonates who were clinically indicated to undergo CRP testing were simultaneously tested using the POCT and laboratory assays. The sensitivities, specificities and predictive values for the POCT, with the laboratory test as the reference test were determined. The time to results between the two tests was compared. Results: There were 139 measured CRP sample pairs from patients with suspected or proven neonatal sepsis. Using 10 mg/L as the cutoff value for both CRP tests, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 97.4%, 99%, 97.4% and 99% respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.99 (p<0.001). The time to point of care result was 4 minutes. Laboratory results were registered at a mean of 4.7 hours but only checked after a mean of 6.8 hours. Conclusions: The POCT CRP and laboratory CRP test have excellent correlation in neonates and may be a useful, quick, reliable method to rationalise antibiotic usage, reduce costs and allow for earlier patient discharge.

Abstract:
The GE Healthcare Life sciences organization develop and manufacture bioreactors, mixers, filtration skids and chromatography systems used together in a biomanufacturing platform. The platform is monitored and controlled by a distributed control system through a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). The automation software controlling the platform is today tested and verified together with the physical units. The software use PROFIBUS, an industry standard for industrial automation, for communication and control of the units. Limited access to the physical units is usually a bottleneck and it's difficult to test abnormal situations to make sure the correct alarms are triggered. To reduce the hardware dependency and to provide support during test and verification, a virtual environment is developed to simulate the behavior of a bioreactor during execution. A .NET application has been developed together with a mathematical framework to simulate a cell culture and to return relevant process parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature and weight. The results show that it's possible to simulate a bioreactor and to communicate with the control system. The software can be a valuable tool when developing and testing automation software but should not be used for process optimization or tuning of control parameters.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In 2005 Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) started a breeding program of military working dogs. The dogs leave SAF’s kennel at an age of 8 weeks and live with puppy raisers. To evaluate the suitability of dogs for military work the dogs conduct a behavioural test at an age of 15-18 months. An “Index value” is extracted from this behavioural test. The puppy raisers answered a modified version of Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) when the dogs were approximately 12 months old. Answered questionnaires and results from the behavioural test were obtained for 59 dogs. Dogs that had passed the behavioural test had tendency for higher scores for “Trainability” (p = 0.078) and “If lived with other animals” (p = 0.066). Failing dogs had significantly higher score for “Stranger Directed Fear” (p = 0.006), ”Non-Social Fear” (p = 0.005), “Dog Directed Fear” (p = 0.021), “Hours of daily activation” (p = 0.001), “Mounting objects” (p = 0.012), and a tendency for higher risk of “Urinating when home alone” (p = 0.058). In a regressions between the “Index value” and the values of the questions from C-BARQ, the “Index value” was negatively correlated to “Stranger Directed Fear” (p = 0.002), “Non-social Fear” (p = 0.003), and “Dog Directed Fear” (p = 0.006). The “Index value” was positively correlated to “Trainability” (p = 0.013), “Hours left home alone” (p=0.043), “Hyperactive” (p = 0.018), “Chases shadows/light spots” (p = 0.043), and a positive tendency for “Chewing on inappropriate objects” (p = 0.075). From a PCA at the categories in C-BARQ, 3 components were extracted. All three components had a correlation to the “Index value”. The results show that the use of C-BARQ can indicate whether the dog will pass the behavioural test or not.

Abstract:
The search for practical large-scale, fast, clean and energy saving chemical processes are highly regarded in the frame of a sustainable development, particularly for the most problematic oxidation reactions. Apart from chemical engineering solutions, improving the process using heterogeneous catalysis is one of the most adapted solution. Vanadium being considered the best metal for such kind of reactions, one had to tackle the problem of its high dispersion on a support to minimize its high propensity for leaching and to optimize its stability for practicable, safe and clean uses. In the present thesis, vanadium is supported inside the nanopores of a mesoporous silica of MCM-41 type where the high dispersion is assisted by the presence of anchoring ions such as Al(III), Ti(IV), Zr(IV) and Ce(IV) ions. A large set of V-(Al/Ti/Zr/Ce)-MCM-41 catalysts was prepared according to three different methods of preparation: i) ultra-fast one-pot synthesis protocol using the assistance of microwave, ii) post-synthesis modification using molecular stencil patterning (MSP) technique and iii) partial thermal treatment (PTT) of the organo-silylated support. The catalysts were characterized thoroughly using a panel of physical techniques and, particularly, the blue shift of the optical gap measured from the vanadium charge transfer band known to correlated with the dispersion of the metal. In complement, the stability was tested from metal leaching using methanol as a corrosive solvent while their catalytic reactivity was estimated in the aerobic oxidation of 1,2-diphenyl-2-methoxyethanol. This is a model reaction that simulates the oxidative C-C bond cleavage in lignin, the most difficult and crucial step in the degradation of this biopolymer, then producing in a clean way valuable methoxylated phenoxy propanol units useful for biomass fuels or bio-sourced precursors for fine chemistry. A high throughput screening approach was applied to test this aerobic oxidation reaction running over 96 reactors in parallel at the same temperature and sorting out the best catalysts with the most suitable anchoring ions and metal loading for the highest catalytic efficiency

Abstract:
As our long-term companions, dogs’ communication with us is perhaps the most developed of all human- animal ones. This study was aimed to investigate breed differences of German Shepherds and Labradors in dog-human communication. This was obtained through two tests: a problem-solving task and a pointing test. These two tests target both directions of communication: how much dogs understand and respond to the pointing and how they communicate with humans when facing a problem. Additionally, hair cortisol was measured in the dogs and dog owners filled a behavioural questionnaire (C-BARQ). The main breed difference I found was that Labradors performed better in both tests. I also found that the latency of the dogs’ choices in the pointing test correlated with many factors, e.g. they chose quicker when: choosing correctly, when they had many physical contacts with the experimenter in the problem-solving task, when they were more intense, energetic dogs, when they had higher hair cortisol levels and when they had a confident body posture. This indicates that the latency of choice could depend on the confidence of the dog and on the trust in the experimenter as well as on energy level and focus ability. Overall, this study revealed a limited amount of breed differences, compared to a parallel study on Labrador types (hunting and show dogs), showing that intra-breed differences can be more important than inter-breed ones on a behavioural level.

The present study had the participation of twenty dogs from the city of Rio de Janeiro being divided in two groups. The group 1 was formed by ten dogs with behaviors disorders anxiety disorders and aggressiveness and group 2 was formed by ten dogs clinically healthful. Owners of all dogs were interviewed guided by a data form containing opened and closed questions organized in four blocks: general aspects, behavior historical, stereotypic or ritualistic behavior and aggressiveness historical. After being classified as able to participate of the study they were submitted to the high dose dexamethasone suppression test to verify if there was a difference in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis among the tested groups. No difference on the basal cortisol could be observed (p<0.05) among the two groups. All the individuals were considered suppressors. Therefore the high dose dexamethasone suppression test did not function as a diagnostic tool to confirm the behavioral problem dogs.

Full text
