Full text
Abstract:
Exception handling is required for the development of robust and efficient numerical software, a principal application of Fortran. Indeed, the existence of such a facility makes it possible to develop more efficient software than would otherwise be possible. Most computers nowadays have hardware based on the IEEE standard for binary floating-point arithmetic, which later became an ISO standard. Therefore, the Fortran exception handling features are based on the ability to test and set the five flags for floating-point exceptions that the IEEE standard specifies.

Abstract:
The biochemical genetics laboratory has seen rapid technological growth and progress in the past 25 years, which has greatly aided in the detection of inborn errors of metabolism. Result reporting and accuracy are influenced by preanalytic sample handling, sample type, and methodology. Differentiating normal from abnormal is the key to disease diagnosis, and the interpretation of results often depends upon the pattern of analytes and knowledge about the patient’s clinical picture. The biochemical genetics laboratory is a setting that benefits from the addition of genetic counselors on staff. Technologies may evolve, but the role of the laboratory genetic counselor will remain essential.

Abstract:
The need for any doctor to comprehend, assimilate, analyse, and form an opinion on data cannot be overestimated. This chapter examines the presentation and handling of such data and its subsequent statistical analysis. It covers the organization and description of data, measures of central tendency such as mean, median, and mode, measures of dispersion (standard deviation), and the problems of missing data. Theoretical distributions, such as the Gaussian distribution, are examined and the possibility of data transformation discussed. Inferential statistics are used as a means of comparing groups, and the rationale and use of parametric and non-parametric tests and confidence intervals is outlined. The analysis of categorical variables using the chi-squared test and assessing the value of diagnostic tests using sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and a likelihood ratio are discussed. Measures of association are covered, namely linear regression, as is time-to-event analysis using the Kaplan–Meier method. Finally, the chapter discusses the statistical analysis used when comparing clinical measurements—the Bland and Altman method. Illustrative examples, relevant to the practice of anaesthesia, are used throughout and it is hoped that this will provide the reader with an outline of the methodologies employed and encourage further reading where necessary.

Peverill, KI, LA Sparrow, and DJ Reuter, eds. Soil Analysis: An Interpretation Manual. CSIRO Publishing, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643101357.

Full text
Abstract:
Soil Analysis: An Interpretation Manual is a practical guide to soil tests. It considers what soil tests are, when they can be used reliably and consistently, and discusses what limits their application. It is the first nationally accepted publication that is appropriate for Australian soils and conditions. The first three chapters review the general principles and concepts of soil testing, factors affecting soil test interpretation and soil sampling and handling procedures. The next two chapters describe morphological indicators of soil and include colour plates of major Australian agricultural soils. These are followed by a series of chapters which present soil test calibration data for individual elements or a related group of tests such as the range of soil tests used to interpret soil acidity. Each of these chapters also summarises the reactions of the particular element or parameter in the soil and describes the tests commonly used in Australia. The final chapter presents a structured approach to nutrient management and making fertiliser recommendations using soil test data. The manual will be of particular interest to soil and environmental scientists, farm advisers, consultants and primary producers who will find the manual an essential reference to understanding and interpreting soil test data. Many of the soil tests evaluated in the book are used throughout the world. Soil Analysis: An Interpretation Manual was commissioned and developed by the Australian Soil and Plant Analysis Council (ASPAC). It comprises the work of 37 experts, which has been extensively peer reviewed.

Davis, Cole. SPSS for Applied Sciences. CSIRO Publishing, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643107113.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers a quick and basic guide to using SPSS and provides a general approach to solving problems using statistical tests. It is both comprehensive in terms of the tests covered and the applied settings it refers to, and yet is short and easy to understand. Whether you are a beginner or an intermediate level test user, this book will help you to analyse different types of data in applied settings. It will also give you the confidence to use other statistical software and to extend your expertise to more specific scientific settings as required. The author does not use mathematical formulae and leaves out arcane statistical concepts. Instead, he provides a very practical, easy and speedy introduction to data analysis, offering examples from a range of scenarios from applied science, handling both continuous and rough-hewn data sets. Examples are given from agriculture, arboriculture, biology, computer science, ecology, engineering, farming and farm management, hydrology, medicine, ophthalmology, pharmacology, physiotherapy, spectroscopy, sports science, audiology and epidemiology.

Peters, S. T., ed. Composite Filament Winding. ASM International, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.31399/asm.tb.cfw.9781627083386.

Full text
Abstract:
Composite Filament Winding describes the engineering involved in the design and construction of filament-wound products and the processes and equipment by which they are made. It covers everything from the geometry, physics, and math of winding theory to best practices for handling fibers and resins. It explains how constituent materials and winding patterns influence production quality and costs, how to estimate variables such as laminate thickness and roving dimensions, and how to express fiber trajectories on curved surfaces using vector calculus and intuitive observations. It discusses the design and operation of filament winding systems, the origin of various processes, and test methods and procedures. It presents examples demonstrating accepted design practices and the consideration of factors such as stiffness, discontinuities, stress ratio, mandrel geometry, and process control. It also includes a glossary of related terms. For information on the print version, ISBN 978-1-61503-722-3, follow this link.

Williams, Tully. Working Sheep Dogs. CSIRO Publishing, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643094628.

Full text
Abstract:
Working Sheep Dogs examines and illuminates every aspect of the high-quality working dog. It provides a detailed discussion of the principles behind the training of working dogs, and reveals little-known methods for training and handling sheep dogs in the most effortless manner. The text is divided into six major sections covering the instincts of the working dog, breeding, principles of training, methods of training, handling livestock and sheep dog trials. Photographs and line drawings help to illustrate best techniques when training dogs, such as how to teach dogs to cast, muster and drive. Containing the first comprehensive breakdown and analysis of the instincts of the working dog, and discussing the various principles and methods of their breeding, this book is a practical reference for farmers and stockmen, hobby and lifestyle farmers, sheep dog trial competitors and breeders of working dogs.

Berman, Joshua A. The Abuses of Negation, Bisection, and Suppression in the Dating of Biblical Texts: The Rescue of Moses (Exodus 2:1–10). Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190658809.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter continues and deepens the critique of current historical-critical biblical scholarship put forth in earlier chapters as well. It maintains that the scholarly aim of clearly delineating layers in a text, and then dating them definitively, unwittingly leads to three malpractices of historical-critical method. In handling complex evidence in a reductive fashion, scholars routinely engage in these three erroneous scholarly practices, which are here called the undue negation of evidence, the suppression of evidence, and the forced bisection of a text. These fallacies are illustrated by examples from scholarship on the account of the rescue of Moses, which reveals affinities with a wide array of cognate sources.
