Vaz, Sónia Melania Oliveira. "How efficient is the Portuguese Stock Market?" Master's thesis, Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/10329.

Abstract:
This dissertation reports the results of tests on the weak-form market efficiency applied to six European market indexes (France, Germany, UK, Greece, Portugal and Spain) from January 2007 to January 2012. For this matter we use a serial correlation test, a runs test, an augmented Dickey-Fuller test and the multiple variance ratio test. In addition we also analyze if it would be possible to forecast the PSI-20 returns resorting data mining, more specifically using k-NN and Neural Network. Our findings show that from January 1997 to September 2008 France, Germany and Spain meet most of the criteria for the weak-form market efficiency hypothesis, a situation that occurs afterwards for all six European market indexes from September 2008 to January 2012. Regarding the forecast of PSI-20 returns we designed a strategy based on the forecast of k-NN and Neural Network and concluded that by implementing it we would obtain relevant higher returns than the ones achieved by a buy-and-hold strategy, which compromises the weak-form market efficiency.

Dahlman, Rikard, and Ebba Johansson. "A comparative study regarding weakly stationarity assumptions and time dependency : Signal processing of vibrational loading and its influence on fatigue life." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för maskinteknik (MT), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-77740.

Abstract:
Simplifications regarding calculations of fatigue life due to vibrational loading is based on weakly stationarity assumptions which is a time independent method. The hypothesis was based on the uncertainty of these assumptions. The aim of this study was to examine whether the analysed data fulfilled the assumptions of weakly stationarity. It was determined that the assumption was not valid for most signals and a comparison of time dependent methods should be performed to evaluate the difference compared with the time independent method. Two time dependent methods were constructed and implemented on the signals based on the results of performed stationarity tests. The result determined that a decrease in fatigue life of an investigated weld might occur for the two time dependent methods compared with the time independent method. The method which was considered to produce the most accurate results was also the most constrained as to the amount of data that fulfilled its requirements. A conclusion was drawn that signals containing more data was necessary to achieve conclusive results of the fatigue life. The hypothesis was proven to be mostly true since most of the analysed signals were found to be piecewise weakly stationary.

The goal of my thesis is to verify the weak form of the efficiency of the exchange market. The paper results from the presumptions for efficient price movements on the financial markets. They are applied to the time series of exchange rates of five currency pairs. After definitions of testing methodology, the given exchange rates series are analysed with the help of correlation and autocorrelation test, runs test and a test based on technical analysis. The conclusion of the thesis anwers the question if the exchange rates movements are suitable with the efficient market hypothesis.

Abstract:
Background: Several field-based team sports contain repeated, maximal effort sprints with varying rest lengths in between. This puts high demands on athletes’ metabolic and neuromuscular systems. Testing the anaerobic capacity of athletes is essential to improve and evaluate the progression. One test being utilised for assessing anaerobic capacity is the 300-yard shuttle run test. The test is field-based with stopwatches as the sole equipment. However, the test has not been properly tested for reliability.   Aim: The aim of this bachelor thesis was therefore to investigate the reliability of the 300-yard shuttle run test. Methods: The study was performed with a test-retest method and included a familiarisation meeting, test session and retest session.  Test subjects performed the 300-yard shuttle run test at two different occasions with seven or fourteen days in between. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and 95% confidence interval (CI) was utilised to quantify the reliability. An ICC>0.8 was considered acceptable. Results: 17 American football players participated in the study (median age 20, min. =18, max. =38 y; median weight 83, min. =67, max. =133 kg; median height 184, min. =169, max. =194 cm). The ICC for the test-retest was 0.97 (95% CI  0.91-0.99). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study 300-yard shuttle test is proposed as a test providing reliable results.

Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the study of the electromagnetic calorimeter performances and to the clarification of its role in the selection of mu-e elastic scattering events for the MUonE experiment.Together with the tracking system, the calorimeter constitutes the prototype detector for 2021 the Test Run(TR).One of the main proposals of this thesis is the development of the fast simulation for the calorimeter response, in the working condition expected in the TR.Given a generated set of NLO events, consisting in high energy muons scattering on electrons at rest with prefixed kinematical conditions, it has been developed the procedure which generalizes kinematical scattering conditions considering the kinematical properties of the beam:its angular divergence and its spatial profile (beam spot).NLO events include the case of one real photon radiation. It has been simulated the propagation of particles across light targets and tracking stations, considering the deflection given by MCS, until particles have reached the calorimeter face. Its response has been simulated by means of a fast simulation that has been developed relying on an existing parametrization(GFLASH) also used by CMS.The simulation code has been validated successfully, comparing the results with the expected ones, published by the authors of the model. Thus, it has been studied the distribution of the energy released by particles in the calorimeter cells. The two simulation codes (for the propagation and for the calorimeter response) were unified in a single algorithm, through which a complete study of the events topology expected in the TR was carried out. This tool enabled to identify selection criteria for elastic events within the full NLO set.Three different criteria were proposed which seem to identify efficiently the interesting events. Selections are mainly based on calorimetric information. The thesis clarifies, at least in part, the precious role that this detector may have in the final experiment.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the Czech stock market. Work is focused on the application of the theory of efficient markets, which is one of the theories explaining the evolution of prices of securities, the stock market in the Czech Republic from 2000 to 2008. Efficient market theory represents a random walk, which is used as a tool to describe the phenomenon where the future price changes are random divergence from past prices. The thesis is divided into several parts. The first part presents an actual stock market in the Czech Republic. Because most of the work deals with the analysis yields the PX stock index was that in the next section in detail described and analyzed. Furthermore, the Czech stock market has been analyzed in terms of structure and trading volume. The next section has described the theory of efficient markets. Was described briefly the history of this theory. Another part of this work can be described as a purely practical. First, the work focuses on the market in the one year time series of returns. In second part were analyzed medium-long term consisting of three year time series of returns. The last analyzed period was long term, consisting of eight-year time series of returns from 2000 to 2008.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 27-30, 1997 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
This paper analyzes the bit error rates (BER) using data recorded during an F-16 test at Edwards Air Force Base in September, 1996. The effects of multipath fading on BER are presented. It is shown that significant increases in BER can occur when the received signal power remains at an acceptable level. Recordings of the received power spectrum during the test show that these BER increases are caused by frequency selective fades due to multipath interference. This paper illustrates that in these cases, significant data degradation can occur without drops in the received signal power.

Abstract:

Regression testing plays an important role during the software development life-cycle,especially during maintenance, it provides confidence that the modified parts of softwarebehave as intended and the unchanged parts have no affect by the modification. Regressiontest selection is used to select test cases from the test suites which have been used to test theprevious version of the software. In this thesis, we extend the traditional definition of a testcase with a log file, containing information of which events that occurred when the test casewas last executed. Based on the contents of this log file, we propose a method of regressiontest selection for multi-tasking real-time systems, able to determine which parts of softwarethat have not been affected by the modification. Therefore, the test cases designed for theunchanged parts do not need to be re-tested.

Silveira, Bruna Denardin da. "ALEATORIEDADE E TAMANHO DE AMOSTRA EM MUDAS DE Pinus spp. EM VIVEIRO FLORESTAL." Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, 2007. http://repositorio.ufsm.br/handle/1/8762.

Abstract:
The forest species have been used since the beginning of the times for the most several ends. However, the unrestricted and inadequate use, especially of native examples of great economical value, it is causing great environmental problems. The form, commonly adopted, to reduce the pressure on the native forests it is the use of exotic species. For the importance that those species reached, it exists at the country a vast area planted with homogeneous stands, prevailing the Pinus and Eucalyptus. That demand generates a demand every time larger for more productive forests and of quality, contemplating, this way, in the production of seedlings. However, there is still a lot to be improved in that section, especially in the scientific field. The statistics, if well explored, it can contribute to that. Therefore, this work had as objectives, to verify the distribution of the variables diameter and height of the seedlings of Pinus spp. and to characterize similar behaviors of the variables, in seedlings production trays, as well as, to estimate the sample size for seedlings of Pinus spp. in forest nursery. For the present study data were collected from seedlings of Pinus spp., produced in the Technological Center of Forestry of Santa Maria's Federal University. The data used for the development of the works were coming of experiments with Pinus taeda, accomplished in the first semester of the year of 2005 and other with Pinus elliottii var. elliottii, accomplished in the second semester of the year of 2005. The seedlings were willing in three trays (B1, B2 and B3). The observed variables were diameter and height of the seedling, appraised of 15 in 15 days (B1 and B2) and of 25 in 25 days (B3), where the first evaluation was accomplished to the 50 (B1 and B2) and 25 (B3) days after the emergency of the seedlings and the last to the 140 (B1 and B2) and 175 (B3) days. The statistical analyses were accomplished through application of the Run Test and sample size. The growth in seedlings of Pinus taeda was heterogeneous, being verified the non randomness in the distribution of the observations of the variables height and diameter. Already, for Pinus elliottii var. elliottii the growth of the seedlings was aleatory. The sample size varies in function of the age and randomness of the seedlings for both studied variables, where the number of sample units, for a semi-width of 10%, for Pinus taeda, went from 25 to height and twelve seedlings for the diameter and for Pinus elliottii var. elliottii went of nine seedlings to height and ten for the diameter, when considered the non randomness.

Abstract:
This paper deals with CUSUM tests based on grouped or classified observations. The computation of average run length is reduced to that of solving of a system of simultaneous linear equations. Moreover a corresponding approximation based on the Wald approximations for characteristics of sequential likelihood ratio tests is presented. The effect of grouping is investigated with a CUSUM test for the mean of a normal distribution based on F-optimal grouping schemes. The considered example demonstrates that hight efficient CUSUM tests can be obtained for F-optimal grouping schemes already with a small number of groups.

This paper deals with CUSUM tests for monitoring of intensity parameter of a Poisson process if this process can be observed in a restricted manner only at pregiven equidistant time points. In this case the process can be monitored by means of a CUSUM test for the parameter of a corresponding Poisson distribution. For rational reference parameter values the computation of average run length is reduced to that of solving of a system of simultaneous linear equations. The performance of obtained CUSUM tests is discussed by means of corresponding examples.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to investigate for elite orienteers the results in and the correlation between a so called 5-minutes-pyramid test (5MPT) and a specific maximum oxygen uptake test (VO2max) on a treadmill. The questions we asked ourselves were: Which correlation exists between 5MPT and a specific VO2max on the treadmill for elite orienteers? How would a comparison look like between measured and estimated VO2max? What is the reliability for the 5MPT? How would an equation look like that describe the correlation above? Method In the validity the study 16 elite orienteers (6 women and 10 men) aged 17 to 37 years participated. The two tests that have been carried out were the 5MPT and determined VO2max during running on a treadmill. The 5MPT is a 5-minute-shuttle test, in which the participant moves back and forth in a short interval (5.5 m) over boxes (highest height: 0.62) formed like a pyramid. Power in the pyramid test (5MPTPOWER) was calculated as the product of numbers of laps, body weight, gravity and highest box level divided by time. To determine VO2max the method running on a treadmill was performed. During the first minute the running speed was 8km/h (women)/10 km/h (men) without elevation. Each minute the velocity increased with 1 km/h. The elevation increased with 1 degree after the first minute and thereafter with 0,5 degrees/minute.  The test was finished when the participant had reached her VO2max. Every 15 second the participants heart rate, VO2 (l/min), VCO2 (l/min), VO2 (ml/kg/min) and RER, was registered by means of an online system. Results The correlation between the developed power of the 5MPT and measured VO2max (l/min) was high (r = 0.89, p<0,0001) and also between the number of laps in the 5MPT and measured VO2max (l/min) (r = 0.89, p < 0,0001). The following formulas can be used to predict VO2max after completed 5MPT: VO2max  (l/min) = (5MPTPOWER – 50,914) / 25,795 VO2max (l/min) = (5MPTLAPS – 74,447) / 9,7668 Conclusions 5MPT show a strong correlation with VO2max determined in terms of power and/or the number of completed laps. Calculated formulas for prediction of VO2max have been possible to describe. See results section for other results and relationships between 5MPT and VO2max.

Abstract:
This study explores formal and thematic representations of ruins in twentieth century literary texts, including James Joyce’s Ulysses, T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children, and Adrienne Rich’s “Diving into the Wreck.” Analyzing these texts and concepts of ruins in the theoretical work of Jacques Derrida, Walter Benjamin, and Julia Kristeva, I argue that ruins underscore the arbitrariness—and, thus, the fragility—of symbolic systems of signification. Ruins, by virtue of their fragmentation, invite nostalgic projections of totality only to betray totality as an illusion. Thus, the imagination of wholeness that the ruin incites allows—only to disallow—meaning. Modernity and language also initiate an allegorical process by which representation is made possible and impossible. Proclaiming an alliance (based on a contrast) between the past and the present, signifiers and signifieds, modernity and language likewise betray that representation, by invoking a radical alterity, is ruined from inception.

Abstract:
Abstract Background/problem definition: Mental illness, such as anxiety, is a health problem affecting about 10-20% of adolescents worldwide. Studies have found a person’s physical fitness to be associated with their mental health, but most studies have been done in the western world and few have investigated sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. It has also been found that SSA countries’ guidelines regarding physical activity are few and incomplete, although the importance of it is well known.   Aim: To investigate to what extent physical fitness: grip strength (GS), 20 meter shuttle run test (20MSRT), body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) correlate to self-assessed anxiety in South African students at the UWC.   Methods: The study had a quantitative, cross-sectional and correlational research design with a non-randomized convenience sampling. The physical fitness data were collected through a hydraulic grip strength dynamometer, 20MSRT and by measuring anthropometric measurements in order to calculate BMI and WC. An electronic version of the GAD-7 form was used for self-assessed anxiety.   Results: The results showed a significant positive correlation between BMI and levels of anxiety in women, but not in men. The correlation of anxiety related to WC, GS and 20MSRT showed no significance for the whole sample or related to gender, respectively. Conclusion: No significant correlation could be determined between physical fitness and anxiety. Severe anxiety affected 25% of the population, supporting previous research indicating that students are a group prone to anxiety.

Abstract:
This study investigates translation choices and challenges in the translation of two training guides focused on running. It tests the validity of Reiss’s text-type theory in the translation of cultural aspects. Furthermore, the study discusses to what extent equivalence can be reached when translating an aesthetic language and finally, it comments on some characteristics of typical runners’ language. The results show that Reiss’s text type theory is not sufficient to guide the translation of cultural differences in the SL and TL but an analysis on phrasal and lexical level is also needed, where Koller’s equivalence relations and Newmark’s communicative translation are applicable. The results also show that figurative language is indeed possible to translate in these kinds of texts, where among others compensation proves a useful strategy. Equivalence on all levels of the text, however, is not always possible to reach. Finally, the findings of a special runners’ language were rather limited, although some examples indicating a presence of a runners’ jargon were found.

Lang, Justin. "Exploring the Utility of Cardiorespiratory Fitness as a Population Health Surveillance Indicator for Children and Youth: An International Analysis of Results from the 20 M Shuttle Run Test." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/36668.

Full text
Abstract:
Emerging evidence has demonstrated the strong link between cardiorespiratory fitness and multiple aspects of health (i.e., physiological, physical, psychosocial, cognitive), independent of physical activity, among school-aged children and youth. Cardiorespiratory fitness is a trait that does not vary substantially from day-to-day, and provides an indication of recent physical activity levels, making it an important possible indicator of population health. Thus, the objective of this dissertation was to investigate the utility of cardiorespiratory fitness, measured using the 20 m shuttle run test, as a broad, holistic health indicator for population health surveillance among children and youth. To achieve this objective we completed seven manuscripts, all prepared for submission to peer-reviewed, scientific journals: 1. Systematic review of the relationship between 20 m shuttle run performance and health indicators among children and youth. 2. Review of criterion-referenced standards for cardiorespiratory fitness: What percentage of 1 142 026 international children and youth are apparently healthy? 3. Cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with physical literacy among Canadian children aged 8 to 12 years. 4. International variability in 20 m shuttle run performance in children and youth: Who are the fittest from a 50-country comparion? A systematic review with pooling of aggregate results. 5. Making a case for cardiorespiratory fitness surveillance among children and youth. 6. International normative 20 m shuttle run values from 1 142 026 children and youth representing 50 countries. 7. Temporal trends in the cardiorespiratory fitness of 965 264 children and youth representing 19 countries since 1981. Combined, this dissertation provides support for the importance of cardiorespiratory fitness for health surveillance among school-aged children and youth. Results from the international analysis highlighted the variability across countries, with countries in North-Central Europe and Africa having the highest cardiorespiratory fitness, and countries in South America having the lowest cardiorespiratory fitness. The results indicated that declines in cardiorespirtory fitness may have stabilized in recent years in some high- and middle-income countries. This dissertation also identified two methods (criterion- and normative-referenced standards) to interpret cardiorespirtory fitness levels among children and youth, methods that could be used to inform future consensus, surveillance, and cardiorespiratory fitness guidelines.

This work aims at analyzing the dialogic relationship between literature and its illustration in order to show the creation of imaginary formed on the black ? mixed people, the traditions, the mystique surrounding the "City of Bahia " with its syncretism religious, faith and popular festivals. This discursive intersection gives rise to other forms of reading, interpreting, serving for the understanding of the unique aspects about the varied universe mythical- religious and cultural place. We take as an example the illustrated edition of Bahia de Todos os Santos: street guides and mysteries, Jorge Amado, 1977 edition, featuring the designs of Carlos Bastos. The approach is interdisciplinary because the intent of the writer was to build an artistic, historical- cultural and human panel of Bahian metropolis, so many sources of knowledge, artistic forms were used in order to understand an imaginary, gestated in reality and invention. The city is widely known as the writer proposes to show it to an imaginary tourist, that it may come to know it in its concreteness. For these reasons, the text seems to set up a tour guide, however its operatic quality, interspersed with the mystery, let?s find its fictional quality. Moreover, the work is a cultural-historical testimony, to discuss issues of the past and who are pressing for the decade in which the guide has been updated since the city of Salvador urbanized throughout the twentieth century and grew up with her problems social and economic character.

Abstract:
This dissertation consists of two essays. First essay investigates the implications of researcher data requirement on the risk-adjusted returns of firms. Using the monthly CRSP data from 1925 to 2013, we present evidence that firms which survive longer have higher average returns and lower standard deviation of annualized returns than the firms which do not. I further demonstrate that there is a positive relation between firms’ survival and average performance. In order to account for the positive correlation between survival and average performance, I model the relation of survival and pricing errors using a Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern joint distribution function and fit resulting the moment conditions to the data. Our results show that even a low correlation between firm survival time and pricing errors can lead to a much higher correlation between the survival time and average pricing errors. Failure to adjust for this data selection biases can result in over/under estimates of abnormal returns by 5.73 % in studies that require at least five years of returns data. Second essay examines diversification benefits of commodity futures portfolios in the light of the rapid increase in investor participation in commodity futures market since 2000. Many actively managed portfolios outperform traditional buy and hold portfolios for the sample period from January, 1986 to October, 2013. The evidence documented through traditional intersection test and stochastic discount factor based spanning test indicates that financializaiton has reduced segmentation of commodity market with equity and bond market and has increased the riskiness of investing in commodity futures markets. However, diversifying property of commodity portfolios have not disappeared despite the increased correlation between commodity portfolios returns and equity index returns.

Abstract:
This dissertation questions through a design approach the ways and means allowing the construction of stories related to the urban imaginary. The latter constitute possibilities of telling something through the sound dimensions of historical events, and both individual and collective experiences. The “designer of urban sounds” then builds their own urban scenophony, a method allowing the telling of the sound space — between the spaces of time and the times of space. Such a position allows to account for the socio-cultural weight of sound in the waythe world is told. This research is about detecting and then questioning what is at stakes in a changing society, using field recordings and “territory sound creations,” i.e. narratives built from the raw material of those field recordings. Two dimensions are involved in this work: a theoretical study of an artistic corpus (Tome I) and an action research born outof a city of Strasburg Cifre contract for the state-sponsored and controled Shadok, fabrique du numérique, in collaboration with a transdisciplinary association, Horizome, and the ACCRA team of the University of Strasburg (Tome II)

Abstract:
Background: Exercise performed in natural environments produces health-promoting effects and increases well-being, in comparison with exercises performed in indoors-environments. Individuals who exercise outdoors has higher velocity, heartrate and blood lactate concentration compared to individuals who exercise indoors, which affects the physical performance.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate measurable differences in physical performance indoors and outdoors through a maximum heartrate test.Method: The study was conducted with a randomized controlled cross over design where five women and eight men, physical active, in the middle age of 26 ± 3.67 years, performed a shuttle run test at two times. The test was repeated by the same individual one time indoors and one time outdoors. The analysis was made by estimated VO2 max using a protocol from the performed shuttle run test, and controlled objective measurements of pulse levels, directly before the test started and directly after finished test. Results: Significant differences were found between indoors and outdoors, where VO2 max (O2ml/lbs/min) (p= 0.047) was higher indoors than outdoors (46.08 ± 8.76 and 44.73 ± 8.84). Pulse levels (beats/min) was higher indoors than outdoors (192.36 ± 10.13 and 190.45 ± 9.11) after finished test, but significant differences were not found (p=0.11). Significant differences were not found in pulse levels before the test (p=0.898), between the different environments (107.16 ± 18.78 and 107. 75 ± 18.49).Conclusion: The results in this study show that there are differences in physical performance between different environments. VO2 max was significantly higher in the indoor environment compared to the outdoor environment. The average maximum pulse tended to have a higher average indoors compared to outdoors.

Abstract:
Wooden objects have been widely used in the history of humanity and play an important role in our cultural heritage. The preservation of such objects is of great importance and can be a challenging task. This thesis investigates the static and time-dependent mechanical behaviour of archaeological oak wood from the Vasa warship. Characterisation of mechanical properties is necessary for the formulation of a numerical model to design an improved support structure. The ship was impregnated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) for dimensional stabilisation. All elastic engineering constants of the Vasa oak have been identified and compared with those of recent oak by means of the static and dynamic testing. The experiments were done on samples with cubic geometry, which allowed obtaining all elastic constants from a single sample. The usage of cubic samples with orthotropic mechanical properties during compressive experiments was validated with finite-element simulations. The Young's moduli of the Vasa oak in all orthotropic directions were smaller than those for the recent oak. The shear moduli of Vasa oak was determined and verified with the resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. The time-dependent mechanical behaviour of the Vasa oak has been studied. Creep studies were performed in uniaxial compression on the cubic samples in all orthotropic directions. The samples loaded in the longitudinal direction were subjected to different stress levels. A stress level below 15% of the yield stress in the longitudinal direction did not result in non-linear creep with increasing creep rates within the time frame of the tests. The results of the studies in radial and tangential directions showed that creep was dominated by the effect of annual fluctuations in relative humidity and temperature. The weight changes based on annual fluctuations of relative humidity were measured for Vasa oak and recent oak. The Vasa oak showed higher variations due to an increased hygroscopicity which is the result of the impregnation with PEG. In conceiving a full-scale finite-element model of Vasa ship, not only the stress-strain relations of the material but also those of the structural joints are needed. Since the in-situ measurement of joints is not an option, a replica of a section of the ship hull was built and tested mechanically. The load-induced displacements were measured using 3D laser scanning which proved to have advantages to conventional point displacement measurements. The mechanical characteristics of the Vasa oak and joint information presented in this work can be used as input for a finite-element model of the Vasa ship for simulation of static and time-dependent behaviour on a larger scale.

During the fourteenth century, with the rise of Dol po pa Shes rab rgyal mtshan (1292-1361), the gzhan stong philosophical tradition became a source of great controversy in Tibet. Dol po pa taught this new philosophical tradition for the first time to the wider Tibetan intellectual community. As Dol po pa's Jo nang teachings attracted an audience, many other philosophical giants of the day, such as Bu ston Rin chen grub (1290-1364), Red mda' ba Gzhon nu blo gros (1349-1412/13), and their students composed polemical works to refute Jo nang tradition. Lamp that Illuminates the Expanse of Reality was composed in the midst of this controversy to defend the Jo nang point of view. Abstract:
Data-flow (DF) testing was introduced more than thirty years ago aiming at verifying a program by extensively exploring its structure. It requires tests that traverse paths in which the assignment of a value to a variable (a definition) and its subsequent reference (a use) is verified. This relationship is called definition-use association (dua). While control-flow (CF) testing tools have being able to tackle systems composed of large and long running programs, DF testing tools have failed to do so. This situation is in part due to the costs associated with tracking duas at run-time. Recently, an algorithm, called Bitwise Algorithm (BA), which uses bit vectors and bitwise operations for tracking intra-procedural duas at run-time, was proposed. This research presents the implementation of BA for programs compiled into Java bytecodes. Previous DF approaches were able to deal with small to medium size programs with high penalties in terms of execution and memory. Our experimental results show that by using BA we are able to tackle large systems with more than 250 KLOCs and 300K required duas. Furthermore, for several programs the execution penalty was comparable with that imposed by a popular CF testing tool.

The present dissertation has a general objective to understand how health care professionals working at the primary health care and how the pregnant women users of this service evaluate the implementation of the rapid HIV and syphilis test in the Stork Network Stork Network (Brazilian Federal Health Project at the Primary Care System) in Porto Alegre, RS. This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research conducted in basic health units of the eight administration districts of Porto Alegre. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, in which13 health professionals and 16 pregnant women participated. The results were analysed through the thematic content analysis, using the Atlas ti software. The research unfolded in two empirical studies that constituted the body of this dissertation. The first study describes the evaluation that the primary health care professionals perform during the implementation of the rapid HIV and syphilis tests in the Stork Network, in the city of Porto Alegre, RS. In this study, the key results were lack of assumption in respect to the health system polices, lack of infrastructure of the health services, discontinuity of the capacitation and matrix support, the test demand, difficulty of the health care professionals to speak about sexuality and sexual practices, counselling as an essential instrument during the performance of the rapid test, the importance of the participation of the partners during the prenatal care, the rapid HIV testing, and the use of condom. The second study covers the perception of the pregnant women, who are users of the primary health care, about the rapid HIV and syphilis tests, and about the counselling received in the Stork Network, in the city Porto Alegre, RS. The main results of this study observed from the speeches of the pregnant women are the importance of the health professional in explaining the users of the service about the reliability of the test and the counselling. In addition, the analysis of the interviews showed that some pregnant women received counselling and provided positive value about it, while others did not receive the counselling. Furthermore, some women pointed out that the counselling seemed to be restricted only to the pre-test. Power mechanisms of the health professionals that compromise the autonomy of women could be observed from the speeches of the pregnant women. In relation to the use of condoms, confidence in the partner was another factor that appeared to be associated with the non-use of condoms. Condom use during the gestational period also appeared linked to an idea of greater care with the baby, over the care of the mother. In conclusion, the importance of dialogue between professionals and users and the participation of partners in prenatal care could be observed through the speeches of the pregnant women.

Runs test can be applied to one-sample and two-sample problems. In the two-sample, runs tests can be used to test whether the two samples come from the same distribution, and on the subject of one-sample problem, it is used to detect randomness of sample when alternative hypothesis is a trend. Quite a few authors presented different test statistics, among which are Mann ( 1945 ), Daniels ( 1950 ), Cox and Stuart ( 1955 ), and linear rank statistics. The purpose of the thesis is the modification of David's ( 1947 ) runs above and below median to improve power. In this paper, we propose a modification of the runs statistic by omitting some sample points around the median. Then, we show the probability density function of our modified test statistic under hypothesis of randomness. In the simulation ,we fixed significance level, and use runs and modified runs test statistics to find the critical region. During the simulation process, we also use randomized test to get the power. And by simulation, we find that the power of our modified test statistic is better than that of the runs test. Finally, we suggest the range of omitable number of sample points to get the better power.

Runs test is one of the popular tests among nonparametric methods. It has been used for testing randomness against trend or cycle, or whether two samples come from the same population. McWilliams (1990) proposed a simple test for testing symmetry abort a known center based on a run statistic. And Modarres and Gastwirth (1996) later gave a modified version of this test which improves the power. Both of these papers focused on the case of a known median. In this paper we explore the situation when the center of symmetry is unknown. The basic idea is to estimate the center of symmetry (the median) and construct a test statistic like that of Modarres and Gastwirth''s. A large-scale simulation was carried out to determine the critical points for the test. To find out how this test performs, we compare powers with that of Modarres and Gastwirth''s against alternatives from the generalized lambda family used in Modarres and Gastwirth (1996). And the power of our test is very competitive with that of Modarres and Gastwirth''s. We also propose a very easy test for testing symmetry when center of symmetry is known. The idea came from our observation that the sample points that are further away from the center carry a lot more information about whether the distribution is symmetric. Hence we decided to look at sample points whose absolute values are biggest among the sample. After exploring different possibilities, we found that a good choice is to only look at the six sample points that have the largest absolute value, whether the sample size is 20,30,50 or 100. We reject the null hypothesis of symmetry when all these six sample points have the same sign. This is a very simple test, yet it has bigger power than Modarres and Gastwirth''s, except when the sample size is 20. Hence this will be a good alternative for testing symmetry.

Williams, Basil. "Revealing Asset Quality: Liquidity Signaling and Optimal Stress Tests." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10161/10494.

Full text
Abstract:

In my first chapter, I present a model in which sellers can signal the quality of an asset both by retaining a fraction of the asset and by choosing the liquidity of the market in which they search for buyers. Although these signals may seem interchangeable, I present two settings which show they are not. In the first setting, sellers have private information regarding only asset quality, and I show that liquidity dominates retention as a signal in equilibrium. In the second setting, both asset quality and seller impatience are privately known, and I show that both retention and liquidity operate simultaneously to fully separate the two dimensions of private information. Contrary to received theory, the fully separating equilibrium of the second setting may contain regions where market liquidity is increasing in asset quality. Finally, I show that if sellers design an asset-backed security before receiving private information regarding its quality, then the optimality of standard debt is robust to the paper's various settings.

In my second chapter, I explore the question of how informative bank stress tests should be. I use Bayesian persuasion to formalize stress tests and show that regulators can reduce the likelihood of a bank run by performing tests which are only partially informative. Optimal stress tests give just enough failing grades to keep passing grades credible enough to avoid runs. The worse the state of the banking system, the more stringent stress tests must be to prevent runs. I find that optimal stress tests, by reducing the probability of runs, reduce the optimal level of banks' capital cushions. I also examine the impact of anticipated stress tests on banks' ex ante incentive to invest in risky versus safe assets.

Njuguna, Josephine M. "An investigation of the market efficiency of the Nairobi Securities Exchange." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/20295.

Full text
Abstract:
This study tests for the market efficiency of the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) after the year 2000 to determine the effect of technological advancements on market efficiency. Data that is used is the NSE 20 share index over the period 2001 to 2015; and the NSE All Share Index (NSE ASI) from its initiation during 2008 to 2015. We cannot accept the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) for the NSE using the serial correlation test, the unit root tests and the runs test. However, we can accept the EMH for the more robust variance ratio test. Overall, the results of the market efficiency are mixed. The most significant finding is that the efficiency of the NSE has increased since the year 2000 which suggests that advancements in technology have contributed to the increase in the market efficiency of the NSE.

The purposes of this study were to investigate the relationship between maximum oxygen uptake and 1.5 mile run/walk, 1600 meter run/walk and 12-minute run/walk. Regression equations were obtained from the relationship between oxygen uptake and run/walk test. Fifty-four male university students (age 20.15 ± 0.76 yrs; body height 173.02 ± 4.60 cm; body weight 63.99 ± 6.89 kgw) were recruited in this study. The results showed that 12-minute run/walk was significantly correlated with maximum oxygen uptake, compared with 1.5 mile run/walk, and 1600 meter run/walk (correlation coefficient r=0.897). This study provided new best regression equations to predict maximum oxygen uptake from the run/walk tests. These findings will provide the guidelines of training program design for the coaches and the reference for the research.
