Abstract:
Electrically evoked otoacoustic emissions are sounds emitted from the inner ear when alternating current is injected into the cochlea. Their temporal structure consists of short- and long-delay components and they have been attributed to the motile responses of the sensory-motor outer hair cells of the cochlea. The nature of these motile responses is unresolved and may depend on either somatic motility, hair bundle motility, or both. The short-delay component persists after almost complete elimination of outer hair cells. Outer hair cells are thus not the sole generators of electrically evoked otoacoustic emissions. We used prestin knockout mice, in which the motor protein prestin is absent from the lateral walls of outer hair cells, and Tecta ΔENT/ΔENT mice, in which the tectorial membrane, a structure with which the hair bundles of outer hair cells normally interact, is vestigial and completely detached from the organ of Corti. The amplitudes and delay spectra of electrically evoked otoacoustic emissions from Tecta ΔENT/ΔENT and Tecta +/+ mice are very similar. In comparison with prestin +/+ mice, however, the short-delay component of the emission in prestin −/− mice is dramatically reduced and the long-delay component is completely absent. Emissions are completely suppressed in wild-type and Tecta ΔENT/ΔENT mice at low stimulus levels, when prestin-based motility is blocked by salicylate. We conclude that near threshold, the emissions are generated by prestin-based somatic motility.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This instructional case offers students the opportunity to explore the fraud risk assessment process and participate in a simulated fraud brainstorming session as required by AS 2401 (formerly SAS 99) for financial statement audits. Drawing on publicly available information about Tesla, Inc. (formerly Tesla Motors), the revolutionary company behind the popular Model S all-electric vehicle, the case materials guide students through multiple learning objectives. These objectives include learning how to: (1) recognize the factors that contribute to financial statement fraud risk; (2) identify and evaluate the likelihood and severity of fraud risks; (3) analyze the ways that fraud risks can lead to material misstatements in the financial statements; (4) understand the purpose of and how to conduct a fraud brainstorming session; and (5) develop audit procedures that respond to assessed fraud risks. In a post-case learning assessment, students reported significant improvement in their knowledge, comprehension, and application of these learning objectives. Students also indicated that they enjoyed learning about these concepts in the context of this popular company. This case has both an individual and a group component, and it is designed for use in an auditing or forensic accounting course at either the undergraduate or the graduate level.

Abstract:
The paper presents the development of the theory of asynchronous motors since Tesla?s discovery until the present day. The theory of steady state, as we know it today, was completed already during the first dozen of years. That was followed by a period of stagnation during a number of decades, when the theory of asynchronous motors was developed only in the framework of the general theory of electric machines, which was stimulated by the problems of the development of synchronous generators and big electric networks. It is only in our time that this simple motor, which was used for a long time just to perform crude tasks, became again the inspiration for the researchers and engineers who enabled it, with the help of power electronics and semi-conductor technology, to be used in the finest drives.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the so-called "war of currents", which unfolded in the United States in the late 19th-early 20th century. The winner of this "war" was a talented Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla. He professed the ideas of alternating current. He was opposed by the famous American businessman and scientist T. Edison. Enterprises of the latter produced machines running on direct current. It made a big profit. After a number of conflicts, Tesla, who worked for Edison, left his company and organized a business of his own jointly with an industrialist D. Westinghouse. Tesla's ideas and projects won a landslide victory. The development of direct current systems ended in the late 1920s, despite the efforts of T. Edison. N. Tesla was at the origins of alternating current systems, the appearance of electric motors, robotics, wireless charging devices and much more. Today, the ideas of the great Serbian inventor, even the most fantastic ones, are experiencing a rebirth.

Abstract:
This essay offers a psychoanalytic reading of Nikola Tesla’s remarkable text My Inventions, a series of articles published in 1919 for the Electrical Experimenter magazine, edited by Hugo Gernsback (Tesla, 2011). The paper argues that the famous ‘elementary phenomena’ described in these articles operate as proto-linguistic elements or enigmatic ‘signifiers’ that form the basis of his subsequent scientific inquiry. These articles demonstrate that unusually for a scientist, Tesla did not give up on the object cause of his knowledge nor on his own position as the subject of his inventions – indeed I argue that his inventions were the means by which Tesla created and realized himself as a subject. I discuss in particular two of Tesla’s inventions: the Rotating Magnetic Field, that is the basis for the AC induction motor, and the Magnifying Transmitter in the context of Tesla’s own accounts of their ‘psychological’ genesis. I will suggest that it was through these electrical inventions in particular that Tesla managed to design a form of subjectivation that enabled him to stabilize his schizophrenic symptoms and disclose the coherence and efficacy of knowledge and delusion. In so doing Tesla’s inventions perhaps point the way towards the delivery of science as ‘a successful paranoia’, in the terms of Jacques Lacan.

Abstract:

Abstract:
With self-driving vehicles no longer a pipe-dream of science fiction comes the growing pains of the new technology. Tesla Motors is the industry leader in implementing new self-driving technologies. Tesla has used new technology in many ways to improve the human factors of their cars, but there are also design flaws that represent threats to efficiency and safety. This paper details the good, the bad, and the ugly of Tesla’s designs, not as a way to negatively impact Tesla’s reputation, but to point out the potential human factors issues that relate to the rise of self-driving cars in general. While the future for autonomous cars has never seemed so promising, it is abundantly clear that we are nowhere near a reality in which the human does not need to be considered.

Abstract:
To the continuous development of technology, more and more opportunities are opened in issues related to the mobility of people with disabilities. One of the problems among these drivers is the relatively fast fatigue caused by driving. The basic solution is of course the optimization of adaptive devices in terms of ergonomics. At the same time, a new technological trend is emerging in the form of autonomous cars. There is therefore the possibility of partially relieving drivers with physical disabilities. People susceptible to fast fatigue at the wheel, they will be able to rest periodically, thanks to the support of driving the car by autonomous driving. This article focuses on combining the types of motor dysfunctions with the available autonomous driving capabilities. Applications are based on tests carried out at the Motor Transport Institute in cooperation with Tesla Warszawa. The autonomous functions will be described on the basis of the possibilities offered on Tesla cars, with the autopilot of the 2nd generation, with software version 9.0. It seems that at the current level one can talk about significant help in driving a car that improves the mobility conditions of people with motor dysfunctions. In the light of this observation, also the estimation regarding the usefulness of future solutions seems to be unequivocally decided to support the legitimacy of the development of autonomous driving technology.

Abstract:
Background The pathology of Parkinson’s disease leads to morphological changes in brain structure. Currently, the progressive changes in gray matter volume that occur with time and are specific to patients with Parkinson’s disease, compared to healthy controls, remain unclear. High-tesla magnetic resonance imaging might be useful in differentiating neurological disorders by brain cortical changes. Purpose We aimed to investigate patterns in gray matter changes in patients with Parkinson’s disease by using an automated segmentation method with 7-tesla magnetic resonance imaging. Material and Methods High-resolution T1-weighted 7 tesla magnetic resonance imaging volumes of 24 hemispheres were acquired from 12 Parkinson’s disease patients and 12 age- and sex-matched healthy controls with median ages of 64.5 (range, 41–82) years and 60.5 (range, 25–74) years, respectively. Subgroup analysis was performed according to whether axial motor symptoms were present in the Parkinson’s disease patients. Cortical volume, cortical thickness, and subcortical volume were measured using a high-resolution image processing technique based on the Desikan-Killiany-Tourville atlas and an automated segmentation method (FreeSurfer version 6.0). Results After cortical reconstruction, in 7 tesla magnetic resonance imaging volume segmental analysis, compared with the healthy controls, the Parkinson’s disease patients showed global cortical atrophy, mostly in the prefrontal area (rostral middle frontal, superior frontal, inferior parietal lobule, medial orbitofrontal, rostral anterior cingulate area), and subcortical volume atrophy in limbic/paralimbic areas (fusiform, hippocampus, amygdala). Conclusion We first demonstrated that 7 tesla magnetic resonance imaging detects structural abnormalities in Parkinson’s disease patients compared to healthy controls using an automated segmentation method. Compared with the healthy controls, the Parkinson’s disease patients showed global prefrontal cortical atrophy and hippocampal area atrophy.

Abstract:

We used conventional gradient echo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at high field strength (4 Tesla) to functionally image the right motor cortex in six normal human subjects during the performance of a sequence of self-paced thumb to digit oppositions with the left hand (contralateral task), the right hand (ipsilateral task), and both hands (bilateral task). 2. A localized increase in activity in the lateral motor cortex was observed in all subjects during the task. The area of activation was similar in the contralateral and bilateral tasks but 20 times smaller in the ipsilateral task. The intensity of activation was 2.3 times greater in the contralateral than the ipsilateral task.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) impairs signal transmission along cortico-cortical and cortico-subcortical connections, affecting functional integration within the motor network. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during motor tasks has revealed altered functional connectivity in MS, but it is unclear how much motor disability contributed to these abnormal functional interaction patterns. Objective: To avoid any influence of impaired task performance, we examined disease-related changes in functional motor connectivity in MS at rest. Methods: A total of 42 patients with MS and 30 matched controls underwent a 20-minute resting-state fMRI session at 3 Tesla. Independent component analysis was applied to the fMRI data to identify disease-related changes in motor resting-state connectivity. Results: Patients with MS showed a spatial expansion of motor resting-state connectivity in deep subcortical nuclei but not at the cortical level. The anterior and middle parts of the putamen, adjacent globus pallidus, anterior and posterior thalamus and the subthalamic region showed stronger functional connectivity with the motor network in the MS group compared with controls. Conclusion: MS is characterised by more widespread motor connectivity in the basal ganglia while cortical motor resting-state connectivity is preserved. The expansion of subcortical motor resting-state connectivity in MS indicates less efficient funnelling of neural processing in the executive motor cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical loops.

Abstract:
Baló’s concentric sclerosis (BCS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease related to multiple sclerosis; its underlying pathology remains unclear. At 7 T MRI in a 19-year-old female BCS patient, microhaemorrhages and ectatic veins were found in T2 hyperintense regions, features which have not been previously reported in conjunction with BCS, and these findings may support the view that vascular pathology plays a role in BCS. MRS data suggest that neuron loss and lipid turnover still took place months after a remission. Plasma exchange was effective in treating a relapse with severe motor deficits, and the off-label use of natalizumab was successful in maintaining remission in this patient.

Abstract:
✓ Functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was performed using a 1.5-tesla MR system to localize sensorimotor cortex. Six neurologically normal subjects were studied by means of axial gradient-echo images with a motor task and one or more sensory tasks: 1) electrical stimulation of the median nerve; 2) continuous brushing over the thenar region; and 3) pulsed flow of compressed air over the palm and digits. An increased MR signal was observed in or near the central sulcus, consistent with the location of primary sensory and motor cortex. Four patients were studied using echo planar imaging sequences and motor and sensory tasks. Three patients had focal refractory seizures secondary to a lesion impinging on sensorimotor cortex. Activation seen on functional MR imaging was coextensive with the location of the sensorimotor area determined by evoked potentials and electrical stimulation. Functional MR imaging provides a useful noninvasive method of localization and functional assessment of sensorimotor cortex.

Abstract:
BackgroundWhen children have marked problems with motor coordination, they often have problems with attention and impulse control. Here, we map the neuroanatomic substrate of motor coordination in childhood and ask whether this substrate differs in the presence of concurrent symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).MethodParticipants were 226 children. All completed Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5)-based assessment of ADHD symptoms and standardized tests of motor coordination skills assessing aiming/catching, manual dexterity and balance. Symptoms of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) were determined using parental questionnaires. Using 3 Tesla magnetic resonance data, four latent neuroanatomic variables (for the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, basal ganglia and thalamus) were extracted and mapped onto each motor coordination skill using partial least squares pathway modeling.ResultsThe motor coordination skill of aiming/catching was significantly linked to latent variables for both the cerebral cortex (t = 4.31, p < 0.0001) and the cerebellum (t = 2.31, p = 0.02). This effect was driven by the premotor/motor cortical regions and the superior cerebellar lobules. These links were not moderated by the severity of symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. In categorical analyses, the DCD group showed atypical reduction in the volumes of these regions. However, the group with DCD alone did not differ significantly from those with DCD and co-morbid ADHD.ConclusionsThe superior cerebellar lobules and the premotor/motor cortex emerged as pivotal neural substrates of motor coordination in children. The dimensions of these motor coordination regions did not differ significantly between those who had DCD, with or without co-morbid ADHD.
