Axholt, Magnus, and Stephen Peterson. "Modelling Traffic Scenarios for Realistic Air Traffic Control Environment Testing." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Science and Technology, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-2672.

Full text
Abstract:

As air traffic is forecasted to increase, air traffic control software subsequently needs to be more sophisticated. To efficiently push development forward, testing is important in order to determine usability. The tests need to be adapted to fit a particular purpose and carried out with methods that preserve the validity of the results.

This thesis describes an implementation project carried out at the EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre, Bretigny-sur-Orge, France. The purpose of the project is to create an application that enables a user to create datasets of air traffic to be used for these tests. The application allows for manual work or bulk imports from external data sources. Furthermore it compiles scenarios as output datasets intended for prototype air traffic control software developed at Linköping University.

The application design rationale and development process is described. Some time is spent on demonstrating the flexibility of the application and how its usage fits in a bigger picture.

Abstract:
This research presents an approach to transition from manual to automated testing of hardware specific firmware. The manual approach for firmware testing can be repetitive and time consuming. A significant proportion of the time is spent on cleaning and re-installing operating systems so that old firmware does not interfere with the newer firmware that is being tested. The approach in this research utilizes virtual machines and presents an automation framework. One component of the automation framework is an application to imitate connected peripheral devices to bypass hardware dependencies of firmware installers. The framework also consists of automation and pipeline scripts with the objective to execute firmware installers and detect errors and abnormalities in the installation and updating processes. The framework can run on locally hosted virtual machines, but is most applicable using cloud hosted virtual machines, where it is part of a continuous integration that builds, downloads, installs, updates and tests new firmware versions, in a completely automated manner. The framework is evaluated by measuring and comparing execution times with manually conducted installation and updating tests, and the result shows that the framework complete tests much faster than the manual approach. Another evaluation in terms of scalability is made where speedup is measured. It is however concluded that scalability does not necessarily depend on the performance and resource allocation of systems, but rather how well it can be expanded and used for future devices and functionalities.

Nystedt, Gustav. "Scenario Creation for Stress Testing Using Copula Transformation." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för fysik, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-160352.

Abstract:
Due to turbulence in the financial market throughout history, stress testing has become a growing part of the risk analysis performed by clearing houses. Events connected to previous crises have increased the demand for prudent risk exposure, and in this thesis we investigate regulators view on how CCPs should construct risk scenarios to meet best practice for stress testing their members’ composite portfolios. A method based on multivariate t-distributions and copula-transformations applied to historical time series data, is proposed for constructing an independent scenario generator which should be used as a compliment to other, more knowledge-based methods. The method was implemented in Matlab to test the theory in practice, and experiments were setup for pure stock portfolios as well as for derivative based portfolios. Backtests were then carried out to validate the underlying theory on historical data spanning 25 years in total. Results show that the method proposed in this thesis indeed has the potential to be a useful approach for creating stress scenarios. Its ability to render specific levels of plausibility seems to show a sufficient level of consistency with real life data, and further research is thereby justified.

Nitsche, Philippe. "Safety-critical scenarios and virtual testing procedures for automated cars at road intersections." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2018. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/34433.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of road intersection safety with regard to a mixed population of automated vehicles and non-automated road users. The work derives and evaluates safety-critical scenarios at road junctions, which can pose a particular safety problem involving automated cars. A simulation and evaluation framework for car-to-car accidents is presented and demonstrated, which allows examining the safety performance of automated driving systems within those scenarios. Given the recent advancements in automated driving functions, one of the main challenges is safe and efficient operation in complex traffic situations such as road junctions. There is a need for comprehensive testing, either in virtual testing environments or on real-world test tracks. Since it is unrealistic to cover all possible combinations of traffic situations and environment conditions, the challenge is to find the key driving situations to be evaluated at junctions. Against this background, a novel method to derive critical pre-crash scenarios from historical car accident data is presented. It employs k-medoids to cluster historical junction crash data into distinct partitions and then applies the association rules algorithm to each cluster to specify the driving scenarios in more detail. The dataset used consists of 1,056 junction crashes in the UK, which were exported from the in-depth On-the-Spot database. The study resulted in thirteen crash clusters for T-junctions, and six crash clusters for crossroads. Association rules revealed common crash characteristics, which were the basis for the scenario descriptions. As a follow-up to the scenario generation, the thesis further presents a novel, modular framework to transfer the derived collision scenarios to a sub-microscopic traffic simulation environment. The software CarMaker is used with MATLAB/Simulink to simulate realistic models of vehicles, sensors and road environments and is combined with an advanced Monte Carlo method to obtain a representative set of parameter combinations. The analysis of different safety performance indicators computed from the simulation outputs reveals collision and near-miss probabilities for selected scenarios. The usefulness and applicability of the simulation and evaluation framework is demonstrated for a selected junction scenario, where the safety performance of different in-vehicle collision avoidance systems is studied. The results show that the number of collisions and conflicts were reduced to a tenth when adding a crossing and turning assistant to a basic forward collision avoidance system. Due to its modular architecture, the presented framework can be adapted to the individual needs of future users and may be enhanced with customised simulation models. Ultimately, the thesis leads to more efficient workflows when virtually testing automated driving at intersections, as a complement to field operational tests on public roads.

Abstract:
This degree project, conducted at Volvo Cars, investigates a method about how to build a test database for an Autonomous Driving (AD) function on a virtual platform and how to extract critical scenarios from the test database to finish test cases reduction through optimization. The virtual platform under study is the model-in-the-loop (MIL) based Simulation Platform Active Safety (SPAS) environment and the optimization tool being used is modeFrontier. The analyzing process, in which three levels of abstraction for scenarios are proposed in order to fulfill all requirements for an AD function, is followed in the project to build the test database. Application is carried out to transform requirements from a specific Operational Design Domain (ODD) and linguistic representation into a test suite which contains concrete scenarios and test cases. A meta-model is built to help analyze system structure and parameter requirements in the level of logical scenarios. The practicability of a scenario-based approach for the design of AD function test cases generation is demonstrated with the example of building Traffic Congestion Support (TCS) test database. Obtaining the test database and the successful analysis of parameters for the TCS function on the MIL platform lead to the main goal of the thesis project, which is finding edge cases in the test database by optimizing objective functions. By defining the objective functions and building the workflow in modeFrontier after trying with different methods, the optimization process is implemented with two different algorithms separately. pilOPT is evaluated as a better solution for AD function than Multi-Objective Simulated Annealing (MOSA) in terms of computational time and edge cases finding. In addition, a noise model is added to ideal sensor model in SPAS to study the influence of noise in real test track. The result shows a big difference in Time-toCollision value, which is a defined objective function in the project. This indicates more test cases are deteriorated to critical scenario if noise is taken into consideration, which shows the influence of noise cannot be neglected during testing.

Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Finance from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
This study focuses on the development of a macroeconomic credit risk model for the prediction of corporate default rates, conditional on the observed economic environment. Data relative to the Portuguese economy was utilized for the development of the model, regarding the period from 2002 to 2012. The results suggest a clear link between macroeconomic factors, such as GDP, interest rates, unemployment and corporate indebtness, to the default rates observed. Furthermore, the introduction of a Merton-based analysis of the loss distributions permitted the analysis of expected and unexpected losses, alongside Basel II capital requirement evolutions.

Abstract:
Debugging errors during real-world testing of remote platforms can be time consuming and expensive when the remote environment is inaccessible and hazardous such as deep-sea. Pre-real world testing facilities, such as Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL), are often not available due to the time and expense necessary to create them. Testing facilities tend to be monolithic in structure and thus inflexible making complete redesign necessary for slightly different uses. Redesign is simpler in the short term than creating the required architecture for a generic facility. This leads to expensive facilities, due to reinvention of the wheel, or worse, no testing facilities. Without adequate pre-real world testing, integration errors can go undetected until real world testing where they are more costly to diagnose and rectify, e.g. especially when developing Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs). This thesis introduces a novel framework, the Augmented Reality Framework (ARF), for rapid construction of virtual environments for Augmented Reality tasks such as Pure Simulation, HIL, Hybrid Simulation and real world testing. ARF’s architecture is based on JavaBeans and is therefore inherently generic, flexible and extendable. The aim is to increase the performance of constructing, reconfiguring and extending virtual environments, and consequently enable more mature and stable systems to be developed in less time due to previously undetectable faults being diagnosed earlier in the pre-real-world testing phase. This is only achievable if test harnesses can be created quickly and easily, which in turn allows the developer to visualise more system feedback making faults easier to spot. Early fault detection and less wasted real world testing leads to a more mature, stable and less expensive system. ARF provides guidance on how to connect and configure user made components, allowing for rapid prototyping and complex virtual environments to be created quickly and easily. In essence, ARF tries to provide intuitive construction guidance which is similar in nature to LEGOR pieces which can be so easily connected to form useful configurations. ARF is demonstrated through case studies which show the flexibility and applicability of ARF to testing techniques such as HIL for UUVs. In addition, an informal study was carried out to asses the performance increases attributable to ARF’s core concepts. In comparison to classical programming methods ARF’s average performance increase was close to 200%. The study showed that ARF was incredibly intuitive since the test subjects were novices in ARF but experts in programming. ARF provides key contributions in the field of HIL testing of remote systems by providing more accessible facilities that allow new or modified testing scenarios to be created where it might not have been feasible to do so before. In turn this leads to early detection of faults which in some cases would not have ever been detected before.

Tidwell, Craig Leonard. "Testing the impact of training with simulated scenarios for information security awareness on virtual community of practice members." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5058.

Abstract:
Even though the null hypothesis, which stated that there would be no difference between the groups scores on the information security awareness tests, was not rejected, the groups that received the initial training with the simulated scenarios did perform slightly better from the pre-training test to the post-training test when compared with the control group that did not receive the initial training. More research is suggested to determine how information security awareness training with simulated scenarios and follow-up testing can be used to improve and sustain the security practices of members of virtual communities of practice. Specifically, additional research could include: comparing the effect of training with the simulated scenarios and with training that would not use the simulated security scenarios; the potential benefits of using adaptive and intelligent training to focus on the individual subjects' weaknesses and strengths; the length of the training with simulated scenarios events, the time between each training event, and the overall length of the training; the demographics of the groups used in the training, and how different user characteristics impact the efficacy of the training with simulated scenarios and testing; and lastly examining how increasing the fidelity of the simulated scenarios might impact the results of the follow-up tests.; Information security has become a major challenge for all private and public organizations. The protection of proprietary and secret data and the proper awareness of what is entailed in protecting this data are necessary in all organizations. This treatise examines how simulation and training would influence information security awareness over time in virtual communities of practice under a variety of security threats. The hypothesis of the study was that security-trained members of a virtual community of practice would respond significantly better to routine security processes and attempts to breach security or to violate the security policy of their organization or of their virtual community of practice. Deterrence theory was used as the grounded theory and integrated in the information security awareness training with simulated scenarios. The study provided training with simulated scenarios and then tested the users of a virtual community of practice over an approximately twelve-week period to see if the planned security awareness training with simulated security problem scenarios would be effective in improving their responses to the follow-up tests. The research subjects were divided into four groups, the experimental group and three control groups. The experimental group received all of the training and testing events throughout the twelve-week period. The three control groups received various portions of the training and testing. The data from all of the tests were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis ranked order test, and it was determined that there was no significant difference between the groups at the end of the data collection.

During the software development process the test activity contributes in terms of increased software quality, team productivity and cost reduction by application of techniques and test criteria. These mechanisms allow the defects detection, reducing the failures in the final product. In a robotic systems development context, VST techniques (Virtual Simulation Tools/Technology) are widely used. Although these approaches be efficient, in some cases they not allow great systematization of the test activity including code coverage analysis. This project explores this gap and proposes an approach for integration testing applied to robotic embedded systems, composed of functional and structural testing, looking for defects mainly related to the communication among processes of these systems. This study was initially conducted by mapping coverage criteria, defined for concurrent programs testing and exploring problems related to non-determinism, communication, and other undesired situations. During the project we defined an approach of integration testing and coverage criteria for mobile robotic systems. The exploratory case studies indicate that the proposed approach is applicable and can contributes to reveal defects not found using simulations or traditional testing of mobile robotic systems.

Abstract:
Software testing is the process of executing a program with the intention of finding errors in the code. It is the process of exercising or evaluating a system or system component by manual automatic means to verify that it satisfies specified requirements or to identify differences between expected and actual results [4]. Software Testing should not be a distinct phase in System development but should be applicable throughout the design development and maintenance phases. ‘Software Testing is often used in association with terms verification & validation ‘Software testing is the process of executing software in a controlled manner, in order to answer the question: Does the software behave as specified. One way to ensure system‘s responsibility is to extensively test the system. Since software is a system component it requires a testing process also.
Software can be tested either manually or automatically. The two approaches are complementary: automated testing can perform a huge number of tests in short time or period, whereas manual testing uses the knowledge of the testing engineer to target testing to the parts of the system that are assumed to be more error-prone. Despite this contemporary, tools for manual and automatic testing are usually different, leading to decreased productivity and reliability of the testing process. Auto Test is a testing tool that provides a “best of both worlds” strategy: it integrates developers’ test cases into an automated process of systematic contractdriven testing. This allows it to combine the benefits of both approaches while keeping a simple interface, and to treat the two types of tests in a unified fashion: evaluation of results is the same, coverage measures are added up, and both types of tests can be saved in the same format. The objective of this paper is to discuss the Importance of Automation tool with associate to software testing techniques in software engineering. In this paper we provide introduction of software testing and describe the CASE tools. The solution of this problem leads to the new approach of software development known as software testing in the IT world. Software Test Automation is the process of automating the steps of manual test cases using an automation tool or utility to shorten the testing life cycle with respect to time.

Abstract:
Today, interoperability is the major challenge for e-Business and e-Government domains. The fundamental solution is the standardization in different levels of business-to-business interactions. However publishing standards alone are not enough to assure interoperability between products of different vendors. In this respect, testing and certification activities are very important to promote standard adoption, validate conformance and interoperability of the products and maintain correct information exchange. In e-Business collaborations, standards need to address different layers of interoperability stack
communication layer, business document layer and business process layer. Although there have been conformance and interoperability testing tools and initiatives for each one of these categories, there is currently no support for testing an integration of the above within a test scenario which is similar to real life use cases. Together with the integration of different layers of testing, testing process should be automated so that test case execution can be done at low cost, and repeated if required. In this theses, a highly adaptable and flexible Test Execution Model and a complementary XML based Test Description Language consisting of high level test constructs which can handle or simulate different parts or layers of the interoperability stack is designed. The computer interpretable test description language allow dynamic set up of test cases and provides flexibility to design, modify, maintain and extend the test functionality in contrast to a priori designed and hard coded test cases. Fung, T. C. "Local scale models of coral reef ecosystems for scenario testing and decision support." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2009. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/18998/.

Full text
Abstract:
The world’s coral reefs have been severely degraded over the past four decades and better management is urgently required to reverse this trend. Mathematical models are important tools for hypothesis and scenario testing, and are thus essential for better management. In this thesis, models of a coral reef ecosystem are constructed that aim to identify the key ecological processes responsible for reef degradation. The models operate at a ‘local’ intra-reef scale and they are dynamic, deterministic and non-spatial. A modelling strategy is used which adds complexity in a step-wise fashion, and this aids in the interpretation of results. The models are analyzed using mathematical equilibrium theory and are then parameterised using empirical data from reefs worldwide. Afterwards, the potential of reefs to undergo phase shifts from coral- to algaldominance under the effects of three anthropogenic stressors – fishing, nutrification and sedimentation – are investigated. This involves the application of a novel type of genetic algorithm, systematic sweeps of the parameter ranges and two types of sensitivity analysis. A key result is that the presence of macroalgae can give rise to multiple equilibria and hence discontinuous phase shifts under each of the three stressors investigated, by strengthening positive feedback to an algal-dominated state. Another key result is that reef benthic covers show a high degree of non-linearity under the three stressors. Overall, the results show that reefs are inherently prone to phase shifts under anthropogenic stress. These results suggest that in order to maximise resilience to reef degradation, there is an urgent need to effectively manage different anthropogenic stressors simultaneously. The models in this thesis can be parameterised for local reef areas at specific locations and then used for scenario testing, and they also serve as a solid foundation on which to add and investigate more complexity.

This paper aims to propose a methodology of calculation of stress to meet the regulatory requirements of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and the Banking Supervision Commission. The methodology uses the macroeconomic variables to determine the behavior of the default of a specific portfolio of credit from a financial institution. Therefore, it was divided into two stages: the first model responds as would be the default with the macroeconomic variables; the second model balances and correlates proportionally macroeconomic variables with each other and their responses to an economic shock. With both models can simulate aligned positive and negative scenarios and know the points of maximum delinquency. Thus, financial institutions can better determine their policies for managing risk and return.

Bannour, Boutheina. "Symbolic analysis of scenario based timed models for component based systems : Compositionality results for testing." Phd thesis, Ecole Centrale Paris, 2012. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00997776.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, we describe how to use UML sequence diagrams with MARTE timing constraints to specify entirely the behavior of component-based systems while abstracting as much as possible the functional roles of components composing it. We have shown how to conduct compositional analysis of such specifications. For this, we have defined operational semantics to sequence diagrams by translating them into TIOSTS which are symbolic automata with timing constraints. We have used symbolic execution techniques to compute possible executions of the system in the form of a symbolic tree. We have defined projection mechanisms to extract the execution tree associated with any distinguished component. The resulting projected tree characterizes the possible behaviors of the component with respect to the context of the whole system specification. As such, it represents a constraint to be satisfied by the component and it can be used as a correctness reference to validate the system in a compositional manner. For that purpose, we have grounded our validation framework on testing techniques. We have presented compositional results relating the correctness of a system to the correctness of components. Based on these results, we have defined an incremental approach for testing from sequence diagrams.

Abstract:
The financial crisis of 2007-2008 was a severe global crisis causing a worldwide recession. One of the main contributing factors of the crisis was the excessive risk appetite of banks and financial institutions. Since then, regulatory authorities and financial institutions have directed focus towards risk management with the main objective to avert a similar crisis from occurring in the future. The aim of this thesis is to investigate how an adverse macroeconomic scenario would affect the migrations between risk classes of an SME portfolio, referred to as stress test. This thesis utilises two frameworks, one by Belkin and Suchower and one by Carlehed and Petrov, for creating a single systematic indicator describing the credit class migrations of the portfolio. Four different regression model setups (Ordinary Least Squares, Additive Model, XGBoost and SVM) are then used to describe the relationship between macroeconomic indicators and this systematic indicator. The four models are evaluated in terms of interpretability and ability to predict in order to find the main drivers for the systematic indicator. Their corresponding prediction errors are compared to find the best model. The portfolio is stress tested by using the regression models to predict the corresponding systematic indicator given an adverse macroeconomic scenario. The probability of default, estimated from the indicator using each of the frameworks, are then compared and analysed with regards to the systematic indicator. The results show that unemployment is the main driver of the risk class migrations for an SME portfolio, both from a statistical and economical perspective. The most appropriate regression model is the additive model because of its performance and interpretability and is therefore advised to use for this problem. From the PD estimations, it is concluded that the framework by Belkin and Suchower gives a more volatile estimate than that of Carlehed and Petrov.

Abstract:

Software is gradually replacing paper based administration systems. The migration to electronic systems is supposed to make life easier for the users. If this is to be the case then these software systems must be created in such a way that the end users are able to use them effectively. To achieve usable systems, software testing must be utilized. There are many ways to test a program, with or without involving real users. Scenario testing is a somewhat poorly documented discipline in software testing, with ambiguous definitions. It does however seem to be well suited in combination with users to test external parts of a software system in a late state of development. This project is based on the work done in the software engineering depth study [12]. There we conducted empirical work and internal testing of the software system KAS, and laid the foundation for this Master’s thesis. In this report we have continued the work with this software and concentrated on its external characteristics and user testing. We have analyzed scenario testing further through a software test of this system involving its future users. The users have been given tasks to complete through stories that explain what to do but not how to do it. We have observed the test subjects closely throughout the tests, and collected important data. The results have been evaluated in order to assess their usefulness, which further points to the quality of scenario testing as a testing method. The results have also spawned functional requirements which have been implemented into the KAS. Through this project we have gained experience that can be useful to others conducting scenario tests or doing research in software testing in the future.

Abstract:
This thesis has set a comprehensive framework to assess the relevance of financial stress tests, identifying their main drawbacks. Three robust and flexible model frameworks have been proposed to improve current practices in each of the tests’ stages. This is achieved through: (i) a semi-parametric EVT–Pair-copulas model for financial risk factors, with a specific focus on extreme values, (ii) a valuation model to assess the impact of risk factors on a financial system, through direct and indirect effects, contagion channels, and considering private and public response functions, and (iii) a Bayesian-based approach to run a systematic selection of stress scenarios for nonlinear portfolios. The presented risk model has proven to outperform commonly used specifications, hence increasing the test’s credibility. Estimated for the French banking system, the valuation model revealed the related risk profile and the main vulnerabilities. Public responses turned to be of vital interest. Finally, the Bayesian approach allows replacing the traditional subjective scenarios and including the tests’ results in quantitative risk management alongside with other conventional tools

ElMesmary, Hebatallah Mohammed. "Modelling container logistics processes in container terminals : a case study in Alexandria." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3656.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to optimize the logistics processes of container terminals. Potentially powerful pipe-flow models of container terminal logistics processes have been neglected to date and modelling of terminals is rare. Because research which adopts a pipe flow and dynamic operational perspective is rare, a case application in Alexandria, Egypt collated empirical container and information flows using interviews and company records to describe its logistics processes and model container and information flows. The methodology used includes qualitative and quantitative methods and a descriptive methodology proceeds sequentially. Primary and secondary data were presented as a pipe flow model to show interrelations between the company’s resources and to identify bottlenecks. Simulation modelling used Simul8 software. Operational level modelling of both import and export flows simulated the actual inbound and outbound flows of containers from entry to exit. The import logistics process includes activities such as unloading vessels by quay cranes, moving containers by tractors to yard cranes to go for storage where customs procedures take place before exiting the terminal by customer’s truck. The export logistics process includes the activities associated with customers’ trucks, lifters, storage yards, tractors and quay cranes. The model takes into account the uncertainties in each activity. This study focuses on operational aspects rather than cost issues, and considers container flows rather than vessel flows. Although the simulated model was not generalized, implementation elsewhere is possible. Following successful validation of a base simulation model which reproduces the case company’s historical scenario, scenario testing empowered the case company to pro-actively design and test the impact of operational changes on the entire logistics process. The study evaluates a typical container terminal logistics system including both import and export containers in the presence of multiple uncertainties in terminal operations (e.g. quay crane operations, tractor operations, yard crane operations). Sensitivity testing and scenario analysis can empower terminal managers to make decisions to improve performance, and to guide terminal planners, managers, and operators in testing future investment scenarios before implementation.

Dernbach, Rafael Karl. "Anticipatory realism : constructions of futures and regimes of prediction in contemporary post-cinematic art." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/289021.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines strategies of anticipation in contemporary post-cinematic art. In the Introduction and the first chapter, I make the case for anticipation as a cultural technique for the construction of and adjustment to future scenarios. This framing allows analysis of constructions of futures as culturally and media-historically specific operations. Via anticipation, constructions of futures become addressable as embedded in specific performative and material economies: as regimes of prediction. The hypothesis is that cultural techniques of anticipation do not only serve to construct particular future scenarios, but also futurity, the very condition for the construction of futures. Drawing upon the philosophical works of, in particular, Vilem Flusser, Jacques Derrida and Elena Esposito, and the theory of cultural techniques, I conceptualize anticipation through the analysis of post-cinematic strategies. I argue that post-cinematic art is particularly apt for the conceptualization of anticipation. The self-reflexive multi-media interventions of post-cinematic art can expose the realisms that govern regimes of prediction. Three cultural techniques of anticipation and their use as artistic strategies in post-cinematic art are theorized: enactment, soft montage and rendering. Each of these techniques is examined in its construction of futures through performative and material operations in art gallery spaces. The second chapter examines strategies of enactment in post-cinematic installations by Neïl Beloufa. My readings of Kempinski (2007), The Analyst, the Researcher, the Screenwriter, the CGI tech and the Lawyer (2011), World Domination (2012) and Data for Desire (2014) propose that enactment allows for an engagement with futures beyond extrapolation. With Karen Barad's theory of agential realism, the construction of futures becomes graspable as a political process in opposition to a mere prolonging of the present into the future. The third chapter focuses on the strategy of soft montage in works by Harun Farocki. I interpret Farocki's application of soft montage in the exhibition Serious Games I-IV (2009-2010) as a critical engagement with anticipatory forms of organizing power and distributing precarity. His work series Parallel I-IV (2012-2014) is then analyzed as a speculation on the future of image production technologies and their role in constructing futures. The final chapter analyses the self-referential use of computer-generated renderings in works by Hito Steyerl. The installations How Not To Be Seen (2013), Liquidity Inc. (2014), The Tower (2015) and ExtraSpaceCraft (2016) are read as interventions in the performative economies of contemporary image production. I argue that these works allow us to grasp the reality-producing and futurity-producing effects of rendering as anticipatory cultural technique. My thesis aims to contribute to the discussions on a 'turn towards the future' in contemporary philosophy and cultural criticism. My research thus focuses on the following set of questions. What can we learn about the operations of future construction through encounters with post-cinematic art? How are futures and future construction framed in such art? What realisms do future constructions rely on? And how can anticipation as a cultural technique be politicized and democratized?

Abstract:
There are a limited number of puzzles accessible to visually impaired people (including the blind population) and also limited 3D map-puzzles available in the market. In order to explore the interest of potential users in 3D map-puzzles and identify their preferences, needs and demands, a participatory design approach was adopted. The project took place in Crete and all participants came from the local population. Because of the non-standard population included in this research project (visually impaired people) accessible methods and means of communication had to be selected. Therefore an extensive background research was performed, including interviews with experts and a thorough study of existing knowledge and previous research in related fields.  Aiming to facilitate understanding of the concept and to provide a common point of reference for all participants, functional prototypes of a 3D map-puzzle of the island of Crete were developed and manufactured. Prototypes were made of wood, either Pine or MDF. Subsequently, focus group and interview sessions were organized. Visually impaired and sighted, adults and children, participated in these sessions which included usability testing of the prototypes, scenario creation and a questionnaire (for the sighted participants). Data collected in the conducted sessions were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. The results revealed usability problems of the prototypes and provided signs of potential problems, most of them related to the use of similar products by visually impaired individuals. Additionally, preferences and needs of the participants about the theme, the size, the material, the type of connection and other elements of the puzzle, were identified. According to the findings, the most severe problem, occurring when visually impaired participants tried to assemble the puzzle, was the uncertainty or “lack of confirmation” whether pieces were assembled in the right way or not. The most popular connection types among visually impaired participants were “fit in a frame” and “magnet”. Additionally, the majority of visually impaired participants were in favor of adding colors on the puzzle and marks for the different cities. Regarding buying interest, six out of eight visually impaired participants stated that they would buy a puzzle like the one they tested. Out of the twenty-two sighted participants, nine answered that it is “possible” and eleven answered that it is “highly possible” to buy a 3D map-puzzle. More than half of the sighted participants selected colors as an additional element on the puzzle while the two most popular connection types were “loose contact” and “fit in a frame”. Regarding the material of the puzzle, wood was well accepted by both sighted and visually impaired participants. However, only prototypes made from wood were available to the participants.  Additionally, participants made various suggestions regarding the theme, the size and additional elements of a 3D puzzle. As a result, many ideas were produced during the sessions. Eventually, outcomes, problems and limitations related to the methods used during the study were discussed and recommendations for future work were made.

Abstract:
When a group of developers work on the same code base, conflicts may arise regarding the implementation of modules or subsystems that developers individually work on. These conflicts have to be resolved quickly in order for the project to advance at a steady pace. Developers who do not communicate changes or other necessary deviations may find themselves in a situation where new or modified modules or subsystems are impossible or very difficult to integrate into the mainline code-base. This often leads to so called “integration hell” where it could take huge amounts of time to adapt new code into the current state of the code-base. One strategy, which can be deployed to counteract this trend is called “continuous integration”. This practice offers a wide range of advantages when a group of developers collaborates on writing clean and stable code. Continuous integration can be put into practice without the use of any tools as it is a “way to do things” rather than an actual tool. With that said, it is possible to support the practice with a tangible tool called a CI-system.This study aims to give insight into the makings of a CI-system and what it fundamentally consists of and has to be able to do. A study of contemporary research reports regarding the subject and a survey was performed in order to substantiate claims and conclusions. Core characteristics of CI-systems are grouped into “functional requirements” and “non-functional requirements (quality attributes)”. By doing this, it is possible to quantify and categorize various core components and functionalities of a typical CI-system. This study also contains an attachment which provides instructions of how to get started with implementing your own CI-server using the CI-system software ”TeamCity”. The conclusion of this study is that a CI-system is an important tool that enables a more efficient software development process. By making use of CI-systems developers can refine the development process by preventing integration problems, automating some parts of the work process (build, test, feedback, deployment) and quickly finding and solving integration issues.

Abstract:
Stress testing is a useful and increasingly popular method of analysing the resilience of financial systems to adverse events. It has been introduced recently to the pensions sector, in some countries, as well. This dissertation aim is to present results from a stress testing based on three different scenarios, two of them with adverse financial market scenarios and the last one related with longevity. The main goals of this test are to observe the impact of the shocks applied to the prime financial assets available in the financial market and to understand their significance in the pension fund portfolio.

Brown, Anne-Marie. "Testing the reliability and accuracy of urgency ratings determined by triage nurses for mental health scenarios, using the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale." 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/4493.

Full text
Abstract:
Over-crowded emergency departments (EDs) are commonplace necessitating triage systems. Although several triage scales exist, the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) is used across EDs nationally. Interestingly, few mental health scenarios have been included in studies testing the reliability and accuracy of the CTAS. Moreover, EDs are increasingly used by individuals in a mental health crisis. The purpose of this study was to test the inter-rater reliability and accuracy of triage nurses’ assignment of urgency ratings for mental health patient scenarios utilizing current CTAS guidelines. The overall Fleiss kappa for this sample of triage nurses (n=18) was 0.31180 representing only fair agreement while the Kendall’s coefficient was 0.67964 or moderate agreement. Both calculations were statistically significant (p<.0001). Several limitations exist nevertheless, observations from this study specifically, focus on the use of second order modifiers in education of triage nurses, may improve the inter-rater agreement for mental health presentations.

Automated deployment and provision in IT operations have become increasingly important. It is partly due to repetitive manual steps, multi environments to be considered, and the individual and dynamic requirements. Previous works have proposed their method by elaborating configuration management tools, i.e. Ansible, but failed to meet the needs of provisioning the machines, lack of actual relationship lifecycle, and multiple commands configuration. This thesis provides application synthesizer as the automated deployment and provision, and testing scenario. This thesis focuses on developing the automated deployment and provision by proposing a top-down approach. This approach aims to minimize the manual effort in configuring virtual machines (VMs). We provide descriptor file at the top level, containing all the requirements for VMs inputted by users, which are fully compatible with kernel virtual machine. Another aim is to consider the real-life relationship lifecycle by providing flexibility for users to define the IP address from the top level and implementing the two communication types: socket-based and message queue-based. Lastly, we proposed dynamic testing scenarios for the anomaly event triggers, ensuring the success of the deployment, and give an overview of the application. Proven by Elastic module, our top-down approach produces the output in accordance with initial input in the descriptor file. We have proven to minimize the processing time in terms of provisioning machines and deploying the application.

Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) software is a recently well recognized approach in planning the operation schedules of jobs. The planning results of an effective APS software should be as close as to the actual results performed in a factory. However, in various production scenarios, the performance of an APS software might be different. This information is very helpful for a company in the decision making of choosing an APS software, but is rarely investigated. This research aims to develop a systematic procedure for evaluating the performance of APS software under different production scenarios. We systematically review literature and propose an appropriate characterization of production scenarios for testing the effectiveness of APS software in an IC foundry. A simulation program is used to emulate the operation of a factory and generate the actual results. An anonymous APS software is used to generate the planned results. Seven performance indices are concerned, and for each index the performance evaluation results are analyzed in various design factors of production scenarios.

With efforts of Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), the techniques of Workflow Management System (WfMS) widely adopted among enterprises are getting matured. With more and more e-software based on WfMS platforms, a methodology laying more focuses on developing workflow-based applications is necessary. This thesis presents a scenario-driven methodology for testing of workflow-based applications. Requirements of the customer would be told as user stories, be recorded as scenarios and be the sources of tests. The developer and the customer reach their agreement through performing scenarios called Scenario Quick Play. The information necessary for development of the application are extracted through analysis of the scenarios. The tester plans tests in terms of scenarios. Through testing with scenario execution, the differences of the application from requirements are tracked and the whole picture of the system is demonstrated. A testing environment supporting the methodology is prototyped. With the environment the scenarios can be constructed, analyzed and executed, and the execution of scenarios could be evaluated with execution reports. A Scenario Quick Player and Scenario Management tools are also integrated. At mean time, a sample workflow-based application is also built to show the feasibility of the methodology and the environment.

Because the demand of friendly user interface becomes greater and greater, many systems have been developed into GUI interface. The subject of how to implement the acceptance test for such kind of system has been studied by many people. In this thesis, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of proceeding acceptance test by white box and black box as well as refer to the theory and method of white box and the usage of black box in the market, and then we come to the conclusion. In white box test, the way of analyzing source code cannot be used in package software without source code, and it is not suitable for the system which had been revised by old system as well. In black box, most of tools record the action of users only, so that the coverage rate is low. The coverage rate is not acceptable even though Script Language has been used. As a result, this thesis tries to build up the relationship between each component by GUI Map, and then generate test cases automatically by visit each node in control flow diagram. After generation, the testing cases have to be reduced by Zero-One Method with 5 reduce rules, and a tool developed by recommended method has to be put into use so as to compare the result.

Web Services is emerging as a new distributed computing platform on top of the Internet and is attracting enormous research and development efforts from industry and academic. The main objective of Web Services is to allow building distributed systems using Web services developed by different teams, thus mechanisms for service composition and coordination are an important part of the Web service architecture. One main challenge for Web services based system development is to ensure the correctness and quality of the services developed by different parties. Currently, Web Services provides basic interface description and service registry standards (WSDL, UDDI), but leaves behavioral specification open. In this thesis we propose to supplement Web service description with scenario-based specification so that not only the semantics and intentions of individual services but also the interrelations between services can become easier to understand. Based on the proposed scenario-based specification language, we develop a Web service testing framework which is capable of generating testing stubs and drivers automatically. In addition, the framework can perform test execution involving multiple, distributed Web services in a coordinated environment. In the long run, we believe our approach not only can improve the consistency and quality of Web services developed in a decentralized manner, but also can speed up the overall development process due to its support for enhanced requirements elicitation and rapid prototyping activities.
