Polímeros heterocíclicos abrangem uma grande variedade de materiais, desde simples polímeros lineares sintetizados a partir de monômeros do tipo heterocíclicos vinílicos até polímeros altamente funcionalizados e reticulados. Neste trabalho realizou-se a modificação química da poliacrilonitrila com a incorporação de grupos tetrazol em diferentes teores (1%, 2,5%, 5% e 10%). Abstract:
Since their discovery in the 1930s, polymeric foams have been widely used in the industry for a variety of applications such as acoustical and thermal insulation, filters, absorbents etc. The reason for this ascending trend can be attributed to factors such as cost, ease of processing and a high strength to weight ratio compared to non-foamed polymers. The purpose of this project was to develop an “indestructible” material made of polycarbonate (PC) for industrial applications. Due to the high price of polycarbonate, two foaming methods were investigated to reduce the amount of material used.

In this research, three series of polymeric materials containing tetrazole functionalities were synthesised by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerisation and, following post-polymerisation modification, employed as macromolecular ligands for the complexation of luminescent metals. The photophysical properties of the luminescent materials containing Re(I) triscarbonyl diimine metal complexes or cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes were investigated. The ability of the materials to act as probes in the staining of rodent brain tissues was evaluated.

Syntheses of the bis-, tris- and tetra-tetrazolato calix[4]arene ligands were performed from their corresponding nitrile derivatives. Mono-nuclear lanthanoid complexes were characterised in the presence of triethylamine, while addition of aqueous ammonium acetate resulted in the formation of an unprecedented discrete linear nineteen lanthanoid hydroxo cluster (Ln19). It was found the length of the cluster could be altered to an Ln12 structure, while retaining an identical cluster motif, by simply replacing ammonium acetate with ammonium benzoate.

Luminescent inorganic compounds have received a great deal of attention due to the ability to modulate their properties and obtain highly emissive compounds for applications in light emitting devices and cellular labelling. This study targets the formation of emissive, multinuclear, tetrazolato complexes of Re(I), and utilises these complexes as sensitisers for lanthanide luminescence. The results increase the understanding of energy transfer mechanisms in d-f metal complexes, and highlight an interesting area for potential investigation.

In this research, a series of iridium(III) tetrazolato complexes were synthesised and their photophysical and biological properties investigated. Both the cyclometalated and the ancillary ligands were systematically modified by substitution of functional groups or by increasing the extension of the  conjugation. This approach allowed a more systematic rationalisation of the structure-activity relationship, highlighting how variations in the chemical structure and charge might influence the biological behaviour of these complexes.

A series of tetrazoles-containing molecules were investigated for their impact on calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystallisation for the first time. COM is the main constituent of kidney stones, a common pathological mineral in humans. The tetrazole series was found to inhibit the morphology, crystal growth and nucleation of COM directly through selective adsorption or by a complexation mechanism, to varying degrees. Structural trends and which of the tetrazole molecules as crystal growth modifiers were confirmed.

Fundamental investigation into a series of Re(I) tetrazolato complexes as optical imaging agents provided insight into how structural modifications influence their chemical, photophysical and biological properties. Modulation of the complexes through protonation and methylation of the tetrazolato ligand led to improved photophysical performance. Functionalisation at the diimine ligand revealed photophysical output is not appreciably altered. Live cell imaging with the Re(I) complexes showed HeLa cell uptake with perinuclear localisation.

Metal nanoparticles were generated by the Laser Ablation Synthesis in Solution approach, encapsulated and stabilised by a variety of ligands in solution. The encapsulation ligands were designed and synthesised to allow the attachment of phosphorescent transition metal complexes on their outer shell. This should facilitate energy transfer between the complex-centre excited state and the surface plasmon resonance of the core. This exploitation of the electronic structure of the nanoparticle surface has insinuations for a variety of photovoltaic applications.
