Non-linear vibration of a spinning tether is studied in this thesis. The tether is thought to be a part of a spinning tethered satellite system in the station-keeping phase so that the tether has a constant nominal length and is forced to spin at a constant rate about its nominal axis. Using the extended Hamilton's principle the governing equations of motion are derived retaining non-linear terms up to the third order that originate from geometric non-linearity. We present optimal solutions for a point-mass electrodynamic tether (EDT) performing phasing and orbit-raising maneuvers. An EDT is a conductive tether on the order of 20 km in length and uses a Lorentz force to provide propellantless thrust. We develop the optimal equations of motion using Pontryagin's Minimum Principle. We find numerical solutions using a global, stochastic optimization method called Adaptive Simulated Annealing. The route selected employed a planar group (aromatic ring or a double bond) in the tether to facilitate the key step, an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction. In this dissertation the linearized dynamics and stability of a two-craft Coulomb tether formation are investigated. With a Coulomb tether the relative distance between two satellites is controlled using electrostatic Coulomb forces. A charge feedback law is introduced to stabilize the relative distance between the satellites to a constant value. Habitat and dietary preferences and ranging behaviour were assessed from January 1989 to May 1991 in the nearly treeless Pennine uplands at Allenheads, using radio-telemetry, transect walks and faecal analysis. Male home range size was smaller than female (maximum 455 hectares). The population density of 0.07 birds/hectare was average for Black Grouse. Mortality was mainly due to predation. In this thesis I scavenge the history of philosophy for answers to the question ‘How are claims to knowledge justified?’.
