This work is devoted to the analysis of Russian wedding incantations that contain shapeshifting motifs. They are a part of the dialogues pronounced by the representatives of the groom’s family (best man, the groom’s godfather, etc.) and the bride’s family (brother, father of the bride, a special “elder,” etc.) near the closed doors of the bride’s house. The shapeshifting motifs in wedding incantations is related to wedding lamentations and fairy tales in its verbal manifestation and style. This study focuses on the remise staged in 1745 on a disputed island, the Isle of Pheasants, for the marriage of Princess Maria Teresa Rafaela of Spain to the French dauphin Louis-Ferdina

In Texas, bridge bearings supporting concrete and steel superstructure types are typically steel-laminated elastomeric bearings that are tapered or have a constant thickness. In marriage, some conventional fiqh literature stipulates that the authority to determine the marriage of the prospective bride is more dominant to the male side than the female party. For example, this is the opinion of Imam Syafi'i who allows the marriage of girls even though the girls are adults without the consent of the girls. In the Indonesian context, marriage must be based on the consent of the two prospective brides, which is one of the administrative requirements so that the marriage can take place.

Hundreds of (semi-)religious women, so-called kloppen and Beguines, lived in early modern Amsterdam, many of them in a community at the Begijnhof in the city centre. This case study analyses, via an emblematically painted devotional print with a calligraphed poem on the verso, how they collectively visualised and experienced their communion with the bridegroom Christ. A significant proportion of the Dutch population remained Catholic throughout the seventeenth century. As monasteries were forbidden, many Catholic women turned to a religious life ‘in the world’, an act which was tolerated by th

Abstract This article contributes to the discussion of retranslation in Translation Studies through a case study on the retranslation of romance novels in Taiwan. Although retranslation has received some attention from translation researchers, most of the existing studies are based on examples of classic literature. In contrast, popular fiction like the romance novel remains relatively under-researched. In this article, paratextual analysis is applied to the publishing environment and marketing strategies for romance novels in order to explain why works of this genre – which are usually regard

In this work, a list of the house nominations, stylistic and poetic means and techniques used to describe the groom’s and bride’s houses are considered based on published and archival materials of the 19th — early 21st centuries. The description of the newlyweds’ houses is formed by depicting three macrolocuses: the adjacent territory, or courtyard; the zone connecting the courtyard with the interior of the dwelling (porch, door, threshold) and the interior of the house, the image of which is formed by sequentially naming the loci that are most significant from the ritual viewpoint (place of h

Burkhanism refers to a belief system that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century as a “reformed” version of shamanism. In Soviet times, forbidden Burkhanism preserved in the intra-ethnic ritual culture, and in the post-Soviet period it began to revive. The purpose of the article is to identify Burkhanist con-cepts in the cultural and semiotic wedding codes. Abstract This paper explores the theme of the horse- and camel-riding lute player appearing in Chinese art and texts as early as the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE). Such works reflect the expansion of trade with Central Asian peoples in late Han, when texts first mention the introduction of lutes by steppe peoples who themselves played them on horseback. Many subsequent texts, poems, and works of art, particularly during the Tang dynasty (618-907), expand on this idea, highlighting not only the instrument’s steppe origins and association with non-Han men but also elite Han women, particularly th

Abstract Among the eight forms of marriage described by the Dharmaśāstric texts, two are strictly interrelated with each other, i.e., Ārṣa and Āsura, both linked to a metaphorical (by giving one or two pairs of oxen to the maiden’s father) or actual purchase of the bride (by exchanging wealth) and respectively considered legitimate (Ārṣa) and illegitimate (Āsura). This paper analyses the formation process of these two marriage forms, which derive from a previous – single and legitimate – marriage by bride price (śulka). The Dharmaśāstric theorisation of marriage rites represents a frame that d

This essay proposes a model of film adaptation as arrangement using three films based on Cornell Woolrich texts, The Window (1949), Rear Window (1954), and The Bride Wore Black (1968). Using Roland Barthes and other theorists, the essay considers the text as a plurality that traverses multiple works. Not only are versions in dialogue with the source material and with each other, but individual texts – the so-called originals – are themselves intertextual and thus plural. In thinking through the ‘stereographic plurality’ of texts and all the intertexts and influences that comprise both source a

Abstract:
The article considers the context created by two of Anton Chekhov’s works – the story “The Bride” and the comedy “The Cherry Orchard”. The basis for contextualization are the resonances between the texts (both: purely textual and at the level of artistic techniques), which contribute to the explication of the author’s worldview. Analysis shows that the contexts formed by Chekhov’s separate texts, the parallels between which can be seen over different parameters, give depth to meanings that in the texts taken separately are not always perceptible
