Abstract:
In United States v. DiCristina, the Eastern District of New York ruled that Texas Hold ‘Em poker is game of skill, and thus, not illegal under the federal Illegal Gambling Business Act. In the decision, the court found that the statute’s text and legislative history did not indicate that Congress intended to include Texas Hold ‘Em poker amongst other illegal gambling activities. But most importantly, the Eastern District found that the analytical and psychological elements of the game allow a skilled player to perform better than another. This, the court reasoned, differentiated Texas Hold ‘Em

Abstract:
Recent years have seen a large increase in the popularity of Texas hold ’em poker. It is now the most commonly played variant of the game, both in casinos and through online platforms. In this paper, we present a simulation study for games of Texas hold ’em with between two and 23 players. From these simulations, we estimate the probabilities of each player having been dealt the winning hand. These probabilities are calculated conditional on both partial information (that is, the player only having knowledge of his/her cards) and also on fuller information (that is, the true probabilities of e

Abstract:
Poker has been considered a challenging problem in both artificial intelligence and game theory because poker is characterized by imperfect information and uncertainty, which are similar to many realistic problems like auctioning, pricing, cyber security, and operations. However, it is not clear that playing an equilibrium policy in multi-player games would be wise so far, and it is infeasible to theoretically validate whether a policy is optimal. Therefore, designing an effective optimal policy learning method has more realistic significance. This paper proposes an optimal policy learning met

<p>Recent years have witnessed the big success deep reinforcement learning achieved in the domain of card and board games, such as Go, chess and Texas Hold’em poker. However, Dou Di Zhu, a traditional Chinese card game, is still a challenging task for deep reinforcement learning methods due to the enormous action space and the sparse and delayed reward of each action from the environment. Basic reinforcement learning algorithms are more effective in the simple environments which have small action spaces and valuable and concrete reward functions, and unfortunately, are shown no

Abstract:
Due to the computation time and resources required, there is no known optimal strategy for the game of Gin Rummy. Previous work in extensive games, such as Texas Hold ’em Poker, has found that hand fitness and information sets about the state of the game can be used to determine an improved strategy. These information sets, combined with algorithms for Counterfactual Regret Minimization, can arrive at a Nash Equilibrium strategy for smaller abstractions of extensive games. This paper builds on previous research by extending the premise of hand fitness to card fitness in the discard decision po

Abstract:
In our pilot study investigating Texas Hold ‘em poker, we found that players bluffing (with a losing hand) elicits a similar physiological arousal response (as measured by skin conductance levels) to those in a position of strength and poised to win. Since arousal has been suggested to be a reinforcing factor in problematic gambling behaviour, we sought to replicate the findings of our pilot study in the current investigation. We aimed to extend our previous findings further by: isolating truthful betting (strong betting) to disambiguate deception when players are in positions of strength (i.e
