Abstract:
Texas Instruments asked the team to design a marketing product that would attract more customers to the company’s booth at a trade show and showcase the performance of its devices. SensorBall uses components from the TI Analog Portfolio, including an analog-todigital converter, digital-to-analog converter, operational amplifier, voltage regulator, and microcontrollers. An accelerometer, vibration motor, heart rate monitor, light sensor, and temperature sensor complement the TI products and show what an integrated system might look like. Users interact via a graphical user interface with games and demonstration modes incorporated into the ball, which is made of clear plastic with an internal polycarbonate structure to house all the components. The ball communicates with a personal computer via Bluetooth Low Energy, and a user interface displays sensor output and enables mode changes.

These statically loaded libraries are fixed to the location in memory where they can be executed. Therefore these inflexible libraries are difficult to use in multitasking environments, are not portable between different DSP architectures and are an inefficient use of RAM. A Dynamic Run- Time Loader for libraries adds an abstraction layer between the DSP kernel and the library. Abstract:
The energy consumption of large-scale high-performance computer (HPC) systems has become one of the foremost concerns of both data-center operators and computer manufacturers. This has renewed interest in alternative computer architectures that could offer substantially better energy-efficiency.Yet, the for the evaluation of the potential of these architectures necessary well-optimized implementations of typical HPC benchmarks are often not available for these for the HPC industry novel architectures. The in this work presented LU factorization benchmark implementation aims to provide such a high-quality tool for the HPC industry standard high-performance LINPACK benchmark (HPL) for the eight-core Texas Instruments TMS320C6678 digitalsignal processor (DSP). The presented implementation could perform the LU factorization at up to 30.9 GF/s at 1.25 GHz core clock frequency by using all the eight DSP cores of the System-on-Chip (SoC). This is 77% of the attainable peak double-precision floating-point performance of the DSP, a level of efficiency that is comparable to the efficiency expected on traditional x86-based processor architectures. A presented detailed performance analysis shows that this is largely due to the optimized implementation of the embedded generalized matrix-matrix multiplication (GEMM). For this operation, the on-chip direct memory access (DMA) engines were used to transfer the necessary data from the external DDR3 memory to the core-private and shared scratchpad memory. This allowed to overlap the data transfer with computations on the DSP cores. The computations were in turn optimized by using software pipeline techniques and were partly implemented in assembly language. With these optimization the performance of the matrix multiplication reached up to 95% of attainable peak performance. A detailed description of these two key optimization techniques and their application to the LU factorization is included. Using a specially instrumented Advantech TMDXEVM6678L evaluation module, described in detail in related work, allowed to measure the SoC’s energy efficiency of up to 2.92 GF/J while executing the presented benchmark. Results from the verification of the benchmark execution using standard HPL correctness checks and an uncertainty analysis of the experimentally gathered data are also presented.<br>Energiförbrukningen av storskaliga högpresterande datorsystem (HPC) har blivit ett av de främsta problemen för såväl ägare av dessa system som datortillverkare.

Abstract:
The goal of the following thesis is to transfer radar basic theory in a practical work using Texas Instrument’s mmWave radar series. The range of practical applications for FMCW radars has increased, for example in automotive sector. Understanding the basics of radar mathematics in a simplified way, as well as the transfer from theory to practical work is important for any engineer working on radar projects. Even if the theory is known, the way from a theory to a running system can be hard, facing several problems, because the reality is limited. In two experiments, data from the radar is collected while cars are crossing the observation area of the radar. The data is then used to count the number of vehicles passing the observation area and to estimate the movement of the objects in the field of view.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the wireless embedded Internet implemented with a standardized set of protocols called 6LoWPAN (IPv6 over Low-power Wireless Personal Area Networks). 6LoWPAN enables efficient and adaptable use of IP in networks with low power and low bandwidth. Such a network is set up consisting of an Edge Router and two nodes called CC1180DB from Texas Instruments. A program called NanoHost Example was downloaded and run on the boards making them send data packages with amongst else the current RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) value. With a PC connected to the network, a program called NodeView was used to receive the data. NodeView is a product from Sensinode based on tabs that gives the user possibility to add and program a new tab. A new tab was created in NodeView, showing the received RSSI data in a graph as function of time. The program worked well and the data was reasonable compared to two indicator LED’s on the board. The conclusion is that 6LoWPAN and the associated software and libraries provide a relatively easy way to build long-lasting low power wireless networks. The technology has an endless number of possible applications for industry and individuals to use.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University<br>The purpose of this study was to examine the life of Phyllis Young (b. 1925) and her contributions to string education. The researcher explored her ancestry, childhood, education, personal life, and career as a cellist and string pedagogue. The study is divided into a prologue, five chapters, and an epilogue, and ends with her retirement from the University of Texas String Project in 1993. Phyllis Young, a faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin from 1953- 2007, was Professor of Cello from 1974-2007 and the Parker C. Fielder Regents Professor in Music from 1991-2007. She authored two books, Playing the String Game (1978) and The String Play (1986), and served as national president of the American String Teachers Association. She received that organization's Distinguished Service Award (1984) and the Paul Rolland Lifetime Achievement Award (2002). In 2006, the American String Teachers Association established an award in her name, The Phyllis Young Outstanding Studio Teacher Award. For forty years (1953-1993) Young was associated with the University of Texas String Project, a teacher training program that continues to serve as a model for numerous string programs nation-wide. She was director of the project from 1965-93. Young has given lecture-demonstrations, master classes, and workshops for string teachers in thirtythree countries on six continents and in forty-four of the American states. Her success as a pedagogue is substantiated through her numerous students, many of whom occupy significant musical positions in universities and orchestras, and as leaders in the string education field. Phyllis Young is a dedicated, passionate teacher whose legacy rests not only on her professional accomplishments, but also on her influence on those who have been associated with her. The success of her students, her influence on other string teachers and programs, and her two books, all lasting testaments to her commitment to excellence, can be considered the most significant components of her legacy.

Bowles, Roger A. "Hiring preferences of employers of entry-level biomedical equipment technicians in Texas." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2006. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5478/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the signaling strength, or marketing power, of the most common qualifications of entry-level biomedical equipment technicians (BMETs) in Texas, based on stated hiring preferences of BMET managers, using order ranking of fictitious resumes. This study also sought to determine whether certification status, education background, military training background as a BMET, or type of employer [hospital or ISO] of the hiring manager had an effect on hiring preference for applicant qualifications of associate degree, military training as a BMET, or certified biomedical equipment technician (CBET) certification candidacy. Participants were asked to rank 16 fictitious resumes representing the most common qualifications of entry-level BMETs and to fill out a background questionnaire regarding their education, military, certification, and employer. The number of times each resume ranked in first place was tabulated and inter-rater reliability was calculated. Resumes with qualifications of associate degree versus military training as a BMET were compared at three levels of work experience. A chi-square test for independence was conducted for the comparisons to determine whether work experience influenced preference. Chi-square tests were also conducted for comparisons of associate degree with candidacy for CBET certification versus associate degree and military training with CBET candidacy versus military training. No statistically significant results were found for the chi-square tests, indicating that work experience did not significantly influence participant preferences for the compared qualifications. BMET hiring managers indicated a preference for combinations of qualifications rather than any single qualification. Correlations in hiring managers' educational background, certification status, military training as a BMET, type of employer, and preference for applicant qualifications were examined. Statistically significant correlations were found between participants' preference for associate degree or military training and level of education, military training background, and type of employer. Statistically significant correlations were also found between participants' preference of military training with CBET candidacy over military training alone and military training as a BMET background as well as certification background.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to develop proposals and models for a modular electronics construction to a future D250S Dual battery charger. The aim also includes investigation of possibilities to use some of Texas Instruments C2000 microprocessors. The reason for this is that CTEK SWEDEN AB wants to renew the present D250S Dual battery charger and lower the manufacturing costs. The thesis work has involved gathering theoretical facts for the development of a design on the modular electronic construction, the choice on which microprocessor to use, the choice of electronic components and facts about peripheral equipment to the D250S Dual. With the theoretical there has been developed different solutions to the proposed hardware and software solutions with comparisons in aspects of positive and negative. The thesis work is only a feasibility study to a future D250S Dual. The development of a future D250S Dual needs more work to make it possible to do a proof of concept.

Full text
Abstract:
Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) microcontrollers can be useful for non-critical processing on spaceborne platforms. Many of these microprocessors are inexpensive and consume little power. However, the software running on these processors is vulnerable to radiation upsets, which can cause unpredictable program execution or corrupt data. Space missions cannot allow these errors to interrupt functionality or destroy gathered data. As a result, several techniques have been developed to reduce the effect of these upsets. Some proposed techniques involve altering the processor hardware, which is impossible for a COTS device. Alternately, the software running on the microcontroller can be modified to detect or correct data corruption. There have been several proposed approaches for software mitigation. Some take advantage of advanced architectural features, others modify software by hand, and still others focus their techniques on specific microarchitectures. However, these approaches do not consider the limited resources of microcontrollers and are difficult to use across multiple platforms. This thesis explores fully automated software-based mitigation to improve the reliability of microcontrollers and microcontroller software in a high radiation environment. Several difficulties associated with automating software protection in the compilation step are also discussed. Previous mitigation techniques are examined, resulting in the creation of COAST (COmpiler-Assisted Software fault Tolerance), a tool that automatically applies software protection techniques to user code. Hardened code has been verified by a fault injection campaign; the mean work to failure increased, on average, by 21.6x. When tested in a neutron beam, the neutron cross sections of programs decreased by an average of 23x, and the average mean work to failure increased by 5.7x.

Abstract:
This study investigates the inter-rater reliability of appraisers who award exceptional quality points on the Texas Teacher Appraisal Instrument. Inter-rater reliability was measured when appraisers scored exceptional quality points after viewing a videotaped lesson. Comparisons were made between appraisers when grouped according to elementary or secondary certification, sex, years of administrative experience, and type of training. A total of 707 subjects from 56 school districts participated in the study. Five research hypotheses were formulated with the .05 level of significance for acceptance. All hypotheses were tested by correlation of coefficients, multiple response procedures, frequencies, and percentages. The data measuring inter-rater reliability of the appraisers in training imply that there is very little reliability in the awarding of exceptional quality points on the Texas Teacher Appraisal Instrument. The findings of this study are that certification, sex, administrative experience, and type of training made no significant differences when scoring the instrument. Therefore, it is concluded that the scoring of exceptional quality points is a subjective, professional judgment made by each appraiser when observing a teacher. Since no significant reliability was found, the scoring of exceptional quality points cannot be supported as a reliable means of determining the quality of teaching in Texas schools. Generally, elementary certified appraisers awarded fewer exceptional quality points than secondary appraisers, males awarded slightly more points than females, appraisers indicated no noticeable trend because of years of administrative experience, and less experienced appraisers had the tendency to award more points than experienced appraisers. Therefore, inter-rater reliability in awarding exceptional quality points cannot be expected on a consistent basis. Each appraiser, regardless of certification, sex, years of administrative experience or training, will use his or her own professional judgment when scoring the instrument.

Hunt, Edmund. "'The difference between us' : using early medieval northern European texts in the creation of a work for instrumental ensemble, voices and electronics." Thesis, Birmingham City University, 2017. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.743085.

Abstract:
The aim of this investigation was to explore ways of using untranslated early medieval texts in contemporary musical composition, drawing on literature in Old English, medieval Irish, Old Norse and Middle Welsh. The ultimate goal of this research was to compose a chamber opera for three singers, ensemble and electronics. Despite focusing on the use of text, this is not a literary or linguistic research project. While a knowledge of languages, form and metre has been crucial to my work, the texts have been treated as an element of the creative compositional process. The music has not been written to exemplify text, but to explore and extrapolate the ideas that might arise from it. Moreover, although the texts under consideration were from early medieval northern Europe, the project did not address issues of historical performance practice. Neither was there any attempt to recreate a historical or imagined form of early music. Instead, the texts were used for the literary and sonic content that they provided. The musical language with which these ideas were expressed is my own, which owes its development both to contemporary music and to the legacy of the twentieth century. The first chapter introduces the background to the project, with reference to contemporary composers whose works have informed and influenced the development of my ideas. This is followed by a brief description of the major piece, a chamber opera for three singers, ensemble and electronics entitled The Difference Between Us. In order to hone and explore the various approaches that had the potential to be used in the chamber opera, it was necessary to compose a variety of supporting works. The first supporting work, We Are Apart; Our Song Together, is discussed in detail in Chapter Two, since the composition was included in its entirety as part of the final work. Additional supporting works are discussed in Chapter Three, with sections of this chapter devoted to the vocal, instrumental and electronic compositions of the portfolio. The ideas that were developed in these three compositional genres achieved synthesis in the final work, The Difference Between Us, which is discussed in Chapter Four. In writing The Difference Between Us, the supporting compositions provided invaluable preparatory research into the ways in which early medieval texts could shape the musical structure and content of the work at every level, from surface detail through to global structure. However, the use of untranslated texts in a chamber opera raised profound questions regarding communication and narrative. The form, structure and content of The Difference Between Us arose precisely as an attempt to answer these questions. Rather than limiting the scope of the chamber opera, the early medieval texts became the cornerstone of the musical structure and drama of the work. These conclusions are discussed and evaluated in Chapter Five.

Abstract:
This research addresses the issue of narrative texts in the teaching of Spanish. Narrative texts and literature in general can be instruments of great value teaching and learning a language when used appropriately. Therefore, it is interesting to know how teachers use this didactic tool and how narrative texts can motivate students. To answer these questions, data is collected through surveys answered by 17 students of Spanish as a mother tongue. In these surveys, students answer questions about their experiences with narrative texts in and out of class. There are also 5 interviews with two teachers and three students of Spanish as a mother tongue. The responses obtained are analyzed with quantitative methods (with the help of software such as Minitab and Excel) and qualitative methods. The analysis of the responses to the surveys suggests that students with greater curiosity for narrative texts have a greater increase in the vocabulary obtained. There are also positive relationships between interest in narrative texts, frequency of language use, and frequency of dictionary use. The responses of both teachers and students in the interviews show that the narrative texts provide different knowledge. These results support the idea that narrative texts are effective for mother tongue teaching and learning.

Abstract:
This strategy is equivalent to the name Light-asset strategy wherein this is a new business model for the IDM firms where they try to focus on their core competency in which it is believe that it give its firm a competitive advantage over others. Competitive advantage is defined as the ability of a firm to generate returns above its normal return, therefore higher competitive advantage the higher one firms profit is. Reports and news are stating that TI or abbreviation for Texas Instruments success in implementing its fab-lite strategy is influencing other IDM to follow their steps and thus it is a fact now due to numerous firm announces its pursue in this new business model. However, there is no measurement given by report and news telling how success is TI is on that chosen strategy. This paper tries to have in-depth analysis of TI asset-light strategy, using quantitative case analysis, S&;P Compustat database and numerous literatures to justify the success of the said firm. The quantitative case study provides several insights such as (a) How much in US$ is this light-asset strategy contributed to TI (b) If this strategy can give competitive advantage to one firm, this paper shows how big it is and its sustainability in long run. And (c) If one firms is pursuing this strategy, some pointers in the implementations.

Abstract:
Software engineers spend much of their time checking the correctness of software. Software testing is the most widely used technique for accomplishing this task. Most of the test cases used for checking software are manually created, and may not always cover all execution paths of the software. If key test cases are not executed, then the possibility of errors within the software still exists. By using tools that can automate the testing of software, software engineers can run exhaustive tests on their applications to provide verification and validation. Symbolic execution is a program analysis technique that can be utilized to achieve this. KLEE is an open-source dynamic test generation tool based on symbolic execution. In this report I present my results from evaluating KLEE on the Texas Instruments® Stellaris® Peripheral Driver Library. The Stellaris® Peripheral Driver Library consists of software drivers for controlling the peripherals on the Stellaris suite of ARM® Cortex-M based microcontrollers. In total 554 functions within the library were tested, and a total of 14763 test cases were generated. There were 32 bugs found in the software, which include assertion violations, memory errors, and arithmetic errors (division by zero, and shift errors).<br>text

Penney, Matthew Tyler. ""Instruments of national purpose". World War II and Southern higher education: Four Texas universities as a case study." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/20690.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation considers the significance of the relationship between the federal government and U.S. higher education during World War II and the immediate postwar years, using four Texas universities (the University of Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor University, and the Rice Institute) as case studies. World War II and Cold War contexts of emergency and moral purpose were manifest in America's institutions of higher learning, which channeled their resources to assist a national agenda. Reciprocally, the federal government provided support to universities on unprecedented scales. This partnership was especially relevant to universities in the South, which had historically lagged behind their non-southern peers in research capability, had been more wary of outside influence, and had tended to stress regionalism over---if not at the expense of---nationalism. Yet despite the changes depicted in this study, a preexisting role of the southern university as serving one or more constituencies made the cooperation with the federal government less of a shift in the uses of the university than might otherwise be apparent. Among the topics that this study looks at in some depth are wartime financing of university research, curricular change, campus trainee programs, postwar veteran enrollments, the southern university as a trainer in so-called American values, and the impetus to assert these values. Of special note is the rise of defense-oriented research agendas and securing the revenues to sustain them. The partnership between the university and the federal government institutionalized a new a way of conducting university business that became so normative in just a few years after World War II as to seem irreversible. This dissertation shows the importance of this partnership at a group of universities outside the few high-profile institutions typically invoked as iconic or indicative of war-era federal cooperation. With its regional perspective that considers the southern university's role in advancing defense research, commerce, and technology, such investigation also highlights another basis on which to recognize World War II and the immediate postwar era as transformative in the history of the U.S. South.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>企業管理碩士學程<br>104<br>Christensen's innovation theories predict change in personal computer market in semiconductor industry. Semiconductor powers the personal computer market and The Moore’s law boosts innovation speed in microprocessors. Incumbents in the personal computer value chain used to enjoy decent market growth when consumers are demanding higher performance and more functionality. However, after years of technology evolution, firms overshot customers for performance and created room for new entrants to enter the market with disruptive innovation target at lower-tier market or non-consumer market. The overshooting signs include customers pay less premium for next generation computers; pure player gain traction in the industry as well as customers can’t use all the functionalities. What factors decide if incumbents would fight or fly when facing industry wide changes? This research applied the resources, processes and values theory and share empirical study about case company’s capability building blocks that enable them to make analog and embedded processing their technology domains and grow adjacent markets when personal electronics market shows signals of overshooting customer for performance. Another innovation theory applied is value chain evolution theory. It suggests that firms should integrate resources to improve what’s not good enough. It requires certain part of value chain to be optimized and interdependent. Modular and configurable pieces have to surround the interdependent and optimized pieces. In TI’s case, we are seeing value chain evolution applied not only in product manufacturing but also in product distribution stage to address market penetration in highly fragmented markets.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to 1) provide a detailed examination of the criteria for preevaluation utilized to measure quality in a distance education course for the Virtual College of Texas (VCT) and consortium members, 2) examine the process of each VCT consortium member in order to determine the criterion for the quality of distance education courses being provided by a host or provider college, and 3) develop and validate a pre-evaluation instrument to pre-determine quality in distance education courses for the Virtual College of Texas and consortium members. This was a qualitative research study that utilized document analysis, semi-structured interviews questions and incorporated a modified use of the research and development cycle. The data was gathered from the member colleges that are part of the Virtual College of Texas Consortium. The entire 43 member college?s websites were searched for documents containing the criteria that they used to evaluate the quality of on-line courses. These documents were also used to formulate the questions used in the semi-structured telephone interview questions. During the course of this study it became evident that an educational research and development strategy would be utilized due to the development of a pre-evaluation instrument to pre-determine quality in distance education courses for the Virtual College of Texas. There are 10 major steps in the educational research and design (R and D) process however in this study it was modified since not all of the major steps were applicable. It is clear that determining quality criteria is not easily accomplished due to the differences in and of the decision makers, however the participants in this agreed on the final development of a pre-evaluation instrument to pre-determine quality in a distance education course. The use of a pre-evaluation instrument to pre-determine quality in a distance education course may aid distance education in promotion of its foundational purpose of connecting the instructor with the student for learning and in promoting the value of connecting human beings in a meaningful way through the use of distance education for human resource development (Swanson and Holton, 2001).
