Abstract:
Higher education institutions need to create a relationship with their alumni; however, often this outreach is done without adequate data on which to base decisions. To gain a better understanding of what activities future alumni may regard as both important and enjoyable for their participation as alumni, a survey of current senior-status undergraduate students of a medium-sized public southern university was conducted. The research consisted of an exploratory questionnaire with 108 senior-level students who participated in the survey. The survey consisted of information collected regarding their attitudes towards what the priorities of the university’s alumni association should be and personal recommendation of the university to their friends and relatives. The survey’s findings help identify the needs and preferences of those who are soon to be alumni, and point to a number of areas that can be pursued further in an attempt to improve the relationship between the university and its alumni.

Abstract:
Most universities in the United States have little or no idea about how the public perceives the importance of research done at these institutions. Learning whether the public believes academic research is valuable, meaningful, and practical has implications for higher education, if the public believes that university research is of little worth. This project utilized naturalistic and qualitative methods to learn how alumni perceived the importance of research at a major public university with a heavy concentration in research (Texas A&M University). Long interviews using open-ended questions were conducted with 133 alumni at 33 locations in Texas. Interviews were transcribed, unitized, and coded using qualitative methods, and themes were identified. Findings provide insights into whether the public believes university research is important, how the public learns about research, whether public relations programs are effective, the importance of research and teaching, and the types of research the public wants universities to pursue. A framework is proposed to learn about how well the public understands science and to measure the effectiveness of media and education programs to raise both science awareness and understanding of science.

Abstract:
Abstract Forestry alumni of the School of Forest Resources at Mississippi State University were surveyed to elicit their views on curriculum improvements and employment success in their fields of study. The Forestry major consists of two options: Forest Management and Wildlife Management. Results indicated a need for curricular improvements in communications and personnel management in both options. Forest Management Option graduates suggested a more practical orientation to the curriculum, particularly in the area of timber procurement. About two thirds (68%) of Forest Management alumni worked in private forest industry. Interestingly, more Wildlife Management Option graduates were employed in a forestry-related (50%) enterprise than in a wildlife-related enterprise (about 38%). Almost one-third (31%) of the forestry jobs held by wildlife graduates were in timber procurement. South. J. Appl. For. 21(3):139-142.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTObjective To use an alumni-centered, practice-based research network to evaluate white spot lesions (WSLs) among treated orthodontic patients.Materials and Methods: An initial survey was conducted to ascertain whether orthodontic alumni from Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry were willing to participate. Twenty randomly selected alumni participated, providing 158 treated cases. Each alumnus (1) obtained internal review board consent; (2) submitted pre- and posttreatment photographs of 10 consecutively finished cases; (3) completed a treatment survey; and (4) had the patient/parent complete the American Dental Association (ADA) Caries Risk Assessment. Results: Almost 90% of the alumni surveyed were willing to participate in the practice-based research, primarily because a fellow alumnus asked them to. Approximately 28% of the patients developed WSLs. The average patient developed 2.4 white spots, affecting 12.7% of the teeth examined. WSLs were significantly (P < .001) more (2.3−3.2 times) likely for patients who were identified on the ADA Caries Risk Assessment. The risk of developing WSLs during treatment was also increased for those with fair (2.7 times) or poor (3.5 times) oral hygiene, poor gingival health (2.3 times), and extended treatment times (2.1 times). Conclusions: There is a substantial risk of developing WSLs among private practice patients, depending partially on the length of treatment. Patients at greatest risk can be identified prior to treatment based on the ADA Caries Risk Assessment, oral hygiene, and gingival health.

Abstract:
Under No Child Left Behind legislation of 2002, school principals shoulder the burden of school success determined by test scores of students. Challenges principals face demand school leaders possess greater knowledge and skills than administrators of the past. The need for well-trained, skilled school leaders makes it important to study the subject of school leadership training. This study examined a school leadership preparation partnership between the University of North Texas and Dallas Independent School District. Primary supporting references include work by Bottoms and O'Neill (2001) calling for the 16-member states of the Southern Regional Education Board to train a new breed of principal to meet the current demands for student achievement in public schools. This research adds to the body of knowledge of school leadership development programs, particularly those that involve cohort-based study groups and shared service partnerships between school districts and universities. Major questions investigated: 1) How did participation in the program change the involvement of administrative interns in campus-based decision-making? 2) How has participation in the program changed the ways participants perceive themselves? 3) What actions have members of the cohort group taken in their teacher-leader/administrative positions to affect student achievement? 4) What are the strengths and weaknesses of the UNT/DISD/SREB Leadership Development Program partnership? Information was gathered from 16 of the 26 program participants through questionnaires, interviews, and document study.

Abstract:
Reorganization efforts within colleges and universities are increasingly considered as institutions look for ways to streamline operations for financial cost savings or competitive advantage. The purpose of this study was to assess a particular change effort in a university library which took place between August, 1996 and July, 1997. A team was formed to manage the change effort, and an outside consultant was hired to facilitate the process and guide the team. Stufflebeam's evaluation model was used as a conceptual framework to evaluate the entire process which included a particular change management model brought in by the consultant. The entire change effort was described by the author as a participating member of the team and assessed by gathering feedback from team members, library staff members affected by the effort, and members of the library administration.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 examines how Weatherford moved from the provincial worldview of a small Texas town to become a southern liberal on matters of race and religion. This was brought on by his move to Nashville, Tenn., his academic studies at Vanderbilt University (undergraduate and graduate), his questioning of religious faith, his urban living, and his interaction with African Americans. Indeed, Weatherford’s movement toward liberalism was heavily influenced by his strong Protestant religious focus, a point he held in common with almost all white southern liberals of this era.

Abstract:
With increasing visibility for all educators to meet technology standards, teacher educators must prepare their teacher candidates for the increasing demand for education technology integration in preK-12 and higher education classrooms. Many university faculty, who are responsible for this preparation of teachers, feel unprepared for this challenge, which often pushes them out of their comfort zone. As teacher educators in a small university in Southern Texas, the authors explored specific engagements that serve as preparation of faculty for collaborative, online learning shared experiences and instructional strategy modeling that can enhance teacher candidates' self-regulation skills to integrate technology as they prepare to enter classrooms. As they develop and implement multiple engagements for use within their teacher preparation program, the authors maintain a growth mindset to help improve the quality of their technology interactions and continuously renew their efforts to promote the integration of technology.

Abstract:
Abstract.—Hurricane Katrina (landfall 29 August 2005) and Hurricane Rita (landfall 24 September 2005) devastated large portions of Louisiana and Mississippi and caused significant impacts to Alabama, Florida, and Texas. Immediately following these storms, the American Fisheries Society (AFS) established the AFS Hurricane Relief Task Force (HRTF). The HRTF was composed of AFS chapter officers from Louisiana and Mississippi as well as state and government agency personnel and university faculty and staff from the impacted region. Because essential members of the HRTF were dealing with personal, professional, and agency needs in the months immediately following these storms, a meeting of the HRTF could not be scheduled until 13 January 2006. This 1-d meeting, held on the campus of Louisiana State University, resulted in the drafting of the AFS Hurricane Relief Initiative Action Plan. During January–February 2006, the HRTF worked primarily through the organizational structure and leadership of the Louisiana and Mississippi chapters and coordinated these activities with the southern division of AFS (SDAFS), and the parent society’s officers, governing board, and executive director. The AFS Hurricane Relief Initiative Action Plan was approved and renamed the AFS Disaster Relief Program by the governing board during its midyear meeting in March 2006. In accordance with the approved program, administration and programmatic responsibility for the initiative were transferred from the HRTF to the SDAFS in June 2006, and funds to support the program were made available to the chapters through the SDAFS.

Abstract:
The U.S. Department of Labor awarded a $2.3 million grant to the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) in 2006 in response to the need for well-trained Radiation Protection Technicians (RPTs). The RPT curriculum initiative resulted from significant collaborations facilitated by MU with community colleges, nuclear power plants, professional organizations, and other nuclear industry stakeholders. The objective of the DOL project is to help increase the pool of well-qualified RPTs to enter the nuclear workforce. Our work is designed to address the nuclear industry’s well-documented, increasingly significant need for RPTs. In response to this need, MU and AmerenUE’s Callaway Nuclear Power Plant first partnered with Linn State Technical College’s Advanced Technology Center (LSTC/ATC) to initiate a two-year RPT degree program. The success of this program (enrollments have been increasing over the past four years to a Fall 2007 enrollment of 23) enabled the successful proposal to the DOL to expand this program nationwide. DOL participants include the following partners: Linn State Technical College with AmerenUE – Callaway; Central Virginia Community College with AREVA; Estrella Mountain Community College with Arizona Public Service – Palo Verde; MiraCosta Community College with Southern California Edison – San Onofre; and Hill College with Texas Utilities – Comanche Peak. The new DOL grant has allowed redevelopment of the LSTC/ATC curriculum using a web-based, scenario driven format, benchmarked against industry training standards. This curriculum will be disseminated to all partners. Integral in this curriculum is a paid, three to four month internship at a nuclear facility. Two of the six new RPT courses have been developed as of the end of 2007. Four of five partner schools are accepting students into this new program starting in the winter 2008 term. We expect that these institutions will graduate 100 new RPTs per year to help alleviate the personnel shortage in this critical area of need.
