This qualitative case study provided a narrative portrait of 12 students in the 11th grade in one north Texas district who failed the initial administration of the Texas Educational Assessment of Minimum Skills (TEAMS) exit-level test. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between movement competency and health related quality of life (HRQOL) in adults aged 55 to 75 years. Seventy-eight, male (40) and female (38), subjects completed the study. Their mean (SD) age, height, and mass were 64.9 (5.8) years and 63.6 (4.9) years, 1.8 (.08) m and 1.7 (.07) m, 82.6 (11.8) kg and 70.3 (17.9) kg, for male and female, respectively. The text-based approach is prescribed alongside the communicative approach in the CAPS. This study explores the implementation of the text-based approach and its contribution to English FAL for the development of communicative competence in Grade 4 in public schools in South Africa. Grade 4 is the entry level into the Intermediate Phase of primary schooling, subsequent to a three or four year period of schooling in the Foundation Phase. A number of educational reports have shown that in many schools learners across all phases fall short of the requisite language and literacy skills in English.
