Abstract:
Authors read and they use their readings within their writing process. Scrutinizing authors’ readings provides information on their tastes, working subjects at a given period, methodology, and scholarly milieu. It also brings a lot to intellectual history, highlighting the texts and manuscripts circulating in a certain context. Eight contributions investigating the readings of as many authors, from different points of view, are gathered here. The studied authors are mainly from pre-modern Islam – al-Qādī al-Fāḍil, Ibn Taymiyya, al-Ṣafadī, al-Subkī, al-Maqrīzī – with three exceptions: an incurs

Abstract:
This book deals with the problem of human reason and thinking from a somewhat unexpected angle. Its main idea is that both are the product of evolution, and therefore they bear the imprint of their history, and they are mostly reduced to them, although they are not entirely limited to them. This means that they are by no means universal, on the contrary, they are conditioned by their very formation and the circumstances within which they developed and which literally created them as we know them. In practical terms, this suggests that they are aimed at solving the problems and the type that fa

Abstract:
The new Oxford World’s Classics edition of Oliver Twist is based on the authoritative Clarendon edition, which uses Dickens’s revised text of 1846. It includes his preface of 1841 in which he defended himself against hostile criticism, and includes all 24 original illustrations by George Cruikshank. Stephen Gill’s groundbreaking Introduction gives a fascinating new account of the novel. He also provides appendices on Dickens and Cruikshank, on Dickens’s Preface and the Newgate Novel Controversy, on Oliver Twist and the New Poor Law and on thieves’ slang.

This chapter was originally published as a preface to a collection of Italian translations of texts by and interviews with Carl Schmitt. It shows how each text offers an image of Schmitt that can best be seen in light of what Walter Benjamin called the "now of knowability": in a constellation formed by the decisive political problems of Schmitt’s time. The challenge these texts thus propose is akin to that of finding figures hidden in a landscape painting. The chapter argues that the hidden figures in Schmitt’s works designate those points at which their contemporary relevance is greatest. Onl

This introductory chapter presents the literary writings of Simone de Beauvoir (1908–86), the renowned French existentialist author of The Second Sex. Such insight into her own thought is often provided by Beauvoir's prefaces to works by other authors. For instance, Beauvoir's 1964 “Preface” to La Bâtarde has been described as more reflective of her philosophy than of author Violet Leduc's life. Beauvoir's confrontation with her critics is another source of drama in this study. A criticism that spans the decades of these texts is the charge that an existential novel, with its focus on action a

This chapter examines a set of verse argumenta, or plot summaries, of Virgil’s Aeneid, as well as a pseudepigraphic verse preface to the argumenta in which the author adopts the role of Ovid. These texts are documents of reception: the preface shows how its author is responding to Ovid’s and Virgil’s poetry and how he is constructing his version of literary history, while the argumenta recast Virgil’s poem by miniaturizing it and reuse his language often in a manner akin to imitation. The texts also demonstrate how Virgil’s major poetry begets minor poetry and is remade as it and by it.

It begins with “love” and ends with “AIDS,” but, in between, Simone de Beauvoir’s last piece of writing, her preface to Mihloud, is only a brief summary of the book. By agreeing to place her name on the cover of this memoir, whose author’s name is conspicuously absent, Beauvoir called attention to two related issues that were still considered virtually unmentionable in 1980s France: same-sex relations between men and the disease that was decimating the gay community. (For example, the cause of Michel Foucault’s death in 1984 was initially listed as septicemia and only later revealed as AIDS.)

How did the earliest readers of the text we now call the Gospel according to Mark treat it? Chapter 5 analyzes the evidence of the earliest readers and argues that they regarded it not as a book published by an author but as unfinished notes (hypomnēmata). The Gospel according to Mark was regarded as textualized but not as a published book. The chapter looks at the preface to the Gospel according of Luke, as well as comments by Papias, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, and Eusebius.
