Abstract:
The article presents the results of a study of Latin inscriptions on paintings and engravings of the Vanitas genre. The sources of borrowing citations, their functional-semantic and linguistic load are analysed. The research proves that texts in Latin are an integral part of paintings and engravings of the Vanitas genre, and their use is conditioned by the specifics of the origin and historical development of the genre. The analysis of Latin inscriptions helps form a generalised vision and perception of the world's vanity, the transience of life, and the inevitability of death, which is laid down by artists in their works. The contemplation of such works is designed to inspire viewers with the idea that everything that surrounds and accompanies a person in this life is vanity. Also, there is a significant difference between the death of a person who lives righteously and the death of a sinner. The artists used Latin quotes from various sources to enhance their influence on the audience (the quotes from the Bible and works of ancient authors). Quotes from the works of contemporaries are used less frequently. Artists were relatively free with the quoted phrases: they shortened, supplemented, and combined expressions.

Abstract:
Abstract When a newsmaker (i.e., a newsworthy subject) is speaking or being spoken about in a foreign language, quoting requires translation. In such “translingual quoting” (Haapanen, 2017), it is not only the content of the speech but also its translatability that determines newsworthiness. While news media in some countries prefer indirect quotation, Japanese media favor direct quotes (Matsushita, 2019). This practice yields relatively clear source text (ST)-target text (TT) relationships in translingual quoting, especially when a political speech is directly quoted by newspapers, offering abundant data for news translation research (Matsushita, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019). However, this research approach has been challenged by the rise of a public figure known for making headlines with his extemporaneous remarks: US President Donald J. Trump. Translingual quoting of Trump in the non-English media has proven at times a “nearly impossible quest” (Lichfield, 2016) because of the unique features of his utterances, such as unorthodox word choices, run-on sentences and disjointed syntax (Viennot, 2016). This difficulty is heightened for Japanese newspapers, which uphold a longstanding journalistic standard of reporting speech as faithfully as possible, even in the case of translingual quoting (Matsushita, 2019). Against this backdrop, this article examines the often-conflicting relationship between “quotability” and “translatability” by analyzing how Japanese newspaper articles have quoted Donald Trump and his predecessor, Barack Obama, through comparison of original speeches and news texts produced by Japanese newspapers. The comparison shows that institutional conventions of Japanese newspaper companies regarding direct quotes are frequently neglected by the journalists trans-quoting Trump (e.g., changed to indirect quotes or reproduced less faithfully), leading to marked differences in the textual portrayals of the newsmakers in terms of eloquence and assertiveness.

Abstract:
Credit default swaps (CDS) on a reference entity may be traded in multiple currencies, in that, protection upon default may be offered either in the currency where the entity resides, or in a more liquid and global foreign currency. In this situation, currency fluctuations clearly introduce a source of risk on CDS spreads. For emerging markets, but in some cases even in well-developed markets, the risk of dramatic foreign exchange (FX)-rate devaluation in conjunction with default events is relevant. We address this issue by proposing and implementing a model that considers the risk of foreign currency devaluation that is synchronous with default of the reference entity. As a fundamental case, we consider the sovereign CDSs on Italy, quoted both in EUR and USD. Preliminary results indicate that perceived risks of devaluation can induce a significant basis across domestic and foreign CDS quotes. For the Republic of Italy, a USD CDS spread quote of 440 bps can translate into an EUR quote of 350[Formula: see text]bps in the middle of the Euro-debt crisis in the first week of May 2012. More recently, from June 2013, the basis spreads between the EUR quotes and the USD quotes are in the range around 40[Formula: see text]bps. We explain in detail the sources for such discrepancies. Our modeling approach is based on the reduced form framework for credit risk, where the default time is modeled in a Cox process setting with explicit diffusion dynamics for default intensity/hazard rate and exponential jump to default. For the FX part, we include an explicit default-driven jump in the FX dynamics. As our results show, such a mechanism provides a further and more effective way to model credit/FX dependency than the instantaneous correlation that can be imposed among the driving Brownian motions of default intensity and FX rates, as it is not possible to explain the observed basis spreads during the Euro-debt crisis by using the latter mechanism alone.

Abstract:
AbstractIn his Quaestiones Convivales, a sympotic text recounting more than 75 purportedly historical banquets set in Rome and Greece, Plutarch represents intellectuals engaging with early lyric (melic, iambic, and elegiac poetry) as they express broader views about aesthetic taste. In contrast to Homeric poetry, which is commonly quoted by all characters in the symposium but proportionally more by lower-ranking participants, those who quote lyric appear to be exclusively individuals of higher status. The paper provides specific metrics that further illuminate this phenomenon, and it makes a number of suggestions regarding the relationship between literary taste and social status in Plutarch’s Quaestiones Convivales.

Abstract:
ObjectiveClinician narrative style in electronic health records (EHR) has rarely been investigated. Clinicians sometimes record brief quotations from patients, possibly more frequently when higher risk is perceived. We investigated whether the frequency of quoted phrases in an EHR was higher in time periods closer to a suicide attempt.DesignA case–crossover study was conducted in a large mental health records database. A natural language processing tool was developed using regular expression matching to identify text occurring within quotation marks in the EHR.SettingElectronic records from a large mental healthcare provider serving a geographic catchment of 1.3 million residents in South London were linked with hospitalisation data.Participants1503 individuals were identified as having a hospitalised suicide attempt from 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2017 with at least one document in both the case period (1–30 days prior to admission) and the control period (61–90 days prior to admission).Outcome measuresThe number of quoted phrases in the control as compared with the case period.ResultsBoth attended (OR 1.05, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.08) and non-attended (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.26) clinical appointments were independently higher in the case compared with control period, while there was no difference in mental healthcare hospitalisation (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.98 to 1.01). In addition, there was no difference in the levels of quoted text between the comparison time periods (OR 1.09, 95% CI 0.91 to 1.30).ConclusionsThis study successfully developed an algorithm to identify quoted speech in text fields from routine mental healthcare records. Contrary to the hypothesis, no association between this exposure and proximity to a suicide attempt was found; however, further evaluation is warranted on the way in which clinician-perceived risk might be feasibly characterised from clinical text.

Abstract:
We examine gender bias in media by tallying the number of men and women quoted in news text, using the Gender Gap Tracker, a software system we developed specifically for this purpose. The Gender Gap Tracker downloads and analyzes the online daily publication of seven English-language Canadian news outlets and enhances the data with multiple layers of linguistic information. We describe the Natural Language Processing technology behind this system, the curation of off-the-shelf tools and resources that we used to build it, and the parts that we developed. We evaluate the system in each language processing task and report errors using real-world examples. Finally, by applying the Tracker to the data, we provide valuable insights about the proportion of people mentioned and quoted, by gender, news organization, and author gender. Data collected between October 1, 2018 and September 30, 2020 shows that, in general, men are quoted about three times as frequently as women. While this proportion varies across news outlets and time intervals, the general pattern is consistent. We believe that, in a world with about 50% women, this should not be the case. Although journalists naturally need to quote newsmakers who are men, they also have a certain amount of control over who they approach as sources. The Gender Gap Tracker relies on the same principles as fitness or goal-setting trackers: By quantifying and measuring regular progress, we hope to motivate news organizations to provide a more diverse set of voices in their reporting.

Alshareef, Abdulrhman. "Design and Development of a Quote Validation Tool for Arabic Scripts." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23594.

Abstract:
Over the past decade, there has been a tremendous development in e-publishing tools. The Arab world tendency towards electronic publishing has facilitated the prosperity of Arabic e-publishing over the Internet. Likewise, it has enabled the ordinary user to deploy documents, letters, opinions, and ideas with freedom and ease of use. Although freedom of expression should be guaranteed to everyone, it may be used to disseminate false or distorted information. This may lead to the loss of ordinary user's confidence in e-content. However, the user's confidence in e-content will increase if the credibility of the content is emphasized. There are many factors that challenge this task including not only the rapidly growth of Arabic digital publishing, the absent from control over electronic content, and the lack of e-publishing regulations and laws, but also how to develop an efficient framework to confirm the digital content authenticity. Therefore, the need to monitor the credibility of Internet content while maintaining freedom of expression to its users has become an urgent matter of debate. A flexible framework needs to be developed that will overcome these issues and allow for a comprehensible and comfortable content validation environment that would satisfy the end users' desires. This thesis proposes a framework that serves to confirm fundamental text authenticity in Arabic scripts on the Internet. This framework will demonstrate the design and the development of new quotes verification algorithm and the necessary components of framework design, development and implementation based on Service Oriented architecture.

In this thesis work we aim at examining dialogs that form what is the young researcher sayings (the young researcher here is a master student) when he writes his scientific articles. We search to see how those dialogs take part in authorial-voice-construction and how that writing helps in the constitution of a researcher subject of the master course student. The dialogical analysis/theory of discourse guide the work as central orientation of theoretical-methodology nature, in dialogs with Maingueneau and Authier-Revuz contributions about quoted discourse, reported discourse and discourse representation of others. We also take into account scholars from scientific writing in rhetoric, enunciation and discursive perspectives, among them we stick out Swales (1990), Boch (2013), Boch and Grossmann (2002), Hyland (2001, 2005, 2011), Pollet and Piette (2002), Petrić (2007, 2012) and finally Rinck and Mansour (2013). Our work examines ten scientific essays of master course students of Arts (Letters and Linguistics), these works were published at ABRALIN (A national meeting of Linguistics) and we gave focus a kind of qualitative and interpretative nature to the analysis. The analyzed corpora point out that in writing a scientific essay the young researcher constructs his "sayings" using different strategies to establish dialog with others' words, some of those strategies reveal a kind of creative complex work, and it is productive in appropriate and assimilate of saying from scholars quoted, while others strategies show problems related to inappropriate manipulation of others' saying and resources quoted. Our conclusions reinforce the complex activity in quote when writing, during scientific production. We also show the difficulties young researcher has in the process of familiarization with conventions in scientific academic environment and disciplinary discourse.<br>CNPq: 141408/2012-0

Skarström, Hinojosa Kamilla. "A synchronic approach to the Serek ha-Yahad (1QS) : from text to social and cultural context."

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the social and cultural contexts of 1QS (Serek ha-Yahad) by means of a textual study. The analysis of the text is performed in a synchronic perspective. This means that lexical choices, grammatical forms, references, topics, themes, and intertextuality are analyzed text-internally. By doing so, this study sheds new light on old questions of textual cohesion and coherence, questions that until now have been dealt with mostly from a diachronic perspective. The text analysis entails investigation in view of three interrelated dimensions of language function: ideational, interpersonal, and textual. These imply language as transmitting information, creating and sustaining relations, and functioning to organize itself into cohesive units. Although applying some of the terminology from the field of text linguistics (SFL), the focus in this study is on what a text means rather than why. This means that the semantic-pragmatic aspects of language are of foremost interest here. The analysis is performed from bottom and up, then from top down again. Words, phrases, and sentences are investigated up to the broadest linguistic level, namely, to the semantic discourse itself. With an understanding of the larger discourse at hand thanks to this analysis of textual cohesion and coherence, textual details are once again revisited and interpreted anew. In this work, 1QS is analyzed from beginning to end—chronologically, so to say. Then, at the end of each major section, the discourse is analyzed overall. Following the text analysis, conclusions of the investigations are presented. The conclusions argue that the hierarchal structure of the community and its stringent regulations are to be understood as a corrective in response to corrupt society. It is also argued that language in 1QS has a performative function. Rather than describing the way things are, it aspires to evoke the ideal society. Instead of understanding 1QS and the community mirrored in it as a deviant group with little or no contact with the surrounding world, it is then understood as a potent contribution to late Second Temple Jewish discourse concerning how to create a just society and a sanctifying cultic practice. In the final chapter, the insights gained from textual analysis of 1QS are brought into encounter with the theoretical framework posited by French historian and philosopher René Girard (1923–2015). In light of Girard’s philosophy, the hierarchal organization of the community (the Yahad) as well as its regulations can be interpreted as an effort to prevent a mimetic crisis. The function of the scapegoat in 1QS is discussed in light of Girard’s grand theory of the mechanisms of scapegoating in all societies. The study closes with the tentative hypothesis that the community in 1QS deconstructs the scapegoating mechanism by taking the role of the scapegoat upon itself.

Abstract:
With podcasts being a fast growing audio-only form of media, an effective way of promoting different podcast shows becomes more and more vital to all the stakeholders concerned, including the podcast creators, the podcast streaming platforms, and the podcast listeners. This thesis investigates the relatively little studied topic of automatic podcast trailer generation, with the purpose of en- hancing the overall visibility and publicity of different podcast contents and gen- erating more user engagement in podcast listening. This thesis takes a hotspot- based approach, by specifically defining the vague concept of “hotspot” and designing different appropriate methods for hotspot detection. Different meth- ods are analyzed and compared, and the best methods are selected. The selected methods are then used to construct an automatic podcast trailer generation sys- tem, which consists of four major components and one schema to coordinate the components. The system can take a random podcast episode audio as input and generate an around 1 minute long trailer for it. This thesis also proposes two human-based podcast trailer evaluation approaches, and the evaluation results show that the proposed system outperforms the baseline with a large margin and achieves promising results in terms of both aesthetics and functionality.

Abstract:
This paper examines the written national test in courses Swedish 1 and Swedish 3. The study aims to find out how students handle sources to learn how they are equipped for further studies and/or a life in today's information society. In total, 40 essays have been searched for copying, patchwriting, quotes and source references. The results show that many students reuse language from their sources by copying or by making minor changes to the source language. This tendency occurs at all grades in both Swedish 1 and Swedish 3, although patchwriting and the number of words in copied strings generally decrease in the higher grades. In cases where students use quotes, almost half are incorrect, mainly because of proofreading errors. In both Swedish 1 and Swedish 3, the source references are often incomplete. This is especially true for the lower grades, whereas all essays that received A’s in both courses contain complete source references. Nevertheless, it is not always clear to the reader when information from the source is presented, as some students do not differentiate between their own and others' thoughts. Unclear source usage occurs only at grades F and E in Swedish 3, but in Swedish 1 it also occurs at grades C and A.

Abstract:

Wu, Zizhen, and 吳梓禎. "A Study on the Chinese Translations of the Scripture Quotations from the King James Version Quoted in John Bunyan''s The Pilgrim''s Progress: from the Text-type Perspective of Katharina Reiss." Thesis, 2013. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/81387932917844966489.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立高雄第一科技大學<br>應用英語系口筆譯碩士班<br>101<br>John Bunyan directly and indirectly quoted a lot of sentences or phrases from the King James Version (KJV) in his allegorical novel, The Pilgrim’s Progress, which is highly acclaimed as the most widely-read English work barring the Bible. The Chinese translations of the Scriptures quoted in The Pilgrim’s Progress are the foci of this thesis. In this thesis, the attitude of product-oriented DTS (descriptive translation studies) is adopted to analyze and compare the two Chinese translations of the first part of The Pilgrim’s Progress by Xihai and by Chen Jianmin, respectively, and their Chinese translations of the Scripture quotations are checked to see whether they have the same wording with the Hehe ben, the most popular Chinese Bible in the Chinese-speaking world. The Hehe ben is given the first priority to consult for appropriateness in the translations of the Scripture quotations in my thesis. Moreover, if the corresponding words in the Hehe ben are not considered appropriate enough for translating some Scripture quotations from the KJV then, if suitable corresponding words are found in the Huifu ben or the Zhongwen yinghuang qinding ben, they will be used as the secondary references for translating those Scripture quotations in my discussions. Besides this, a specific method used to categorize the examples in the discussions is Katharina Reiss’ text type theory, which belongs to the category of theoretical translation studies, and the three text types of Reiss applied to the discussions in the thesis are the informative, the expressive, and the operative text types. “Descriptive translation studies” and “theoretical translation studies” are the two branches of the “pure translation studies.” As a result, adopting the words already existing in the Chinese Bible, especially the Hehe ben, to translate the Scripture quotations from the KJV in The Pilgrim’s Progress can have the following main advantages: firstly, for the Scripture quotations of the informative text type, it allows Chinese readers to strongly resonate with the biblical information and feel that the theological information being transmitted through the Chinese translations is convincing; secondly, for the Scripture quotations of the expressive text type, it retains the metaphors and aesthetic elements from the Chinese Bible, especially the Hehe ben, and makes the thoughts expressed through the Chinese translations easily accepted by Christian Chinese readers; thirdly, for the Scripture quotations of the operative text type, it is possible to successfully persuade the Chinese readers to act in the way that John Bunyan wishes.

Abstract:
This chapter offers a close reading of a single oratorical fragment, a passage ascribed to the second-century BC orator C. Titius quoted by Macrobius (Sat. 3.16.15‒16). The chapter explores the range of contexts we can use as readers to try to make sense of the passage, suggesting that quotation practices can illuminate aspects of the quoted text we miss if we concentrate simply on the testimonia to Titius’ activity as an orator as traditionally understood. In this particular case, attention to Macrobius’ concern with luxury and consumption, and the emblematic wolf-fish, also points towards a more general understanding of the use of fragments in antiquity as material for the quoting author to digest and transform.

Abstract:
William Shakespeare’s thirty-nine plays contain numerous biblical references. Of the 151 English Psalms, for example, twenty-nine only receive no mention, while a total of about 350 phrases are quoted by Shakespeare from the remaining Psalms. The frequent mention of the Bible by a playwright such as Shakespeare was the outcome of four overlapping processes, explained in the chapter. First, there was the consolidation of the English biblical codex, largely in the context of the Reformation. Second, the Bible was propagated through church reading, widely prevalent catechisms and prayer books, as well as private and domestic reading—all of which rendered it widely familiar. Third, it is important to note the unprecedented scale of the dissemination, owing to mass print production. Finally, the chapter explains the processes of ‘Englishing’, whereby the biblical translations of the Tudor and early Stuart period rendered the ancient text in familiar terms, assisting its assimilation.

AbstractThis final chapter, containing the full-length profiles of each of the 36 companies representing the base of this research project, plays an integral role in Masterpieces of Swiss Entrepreneurship. Although the various profiles have been quoted extensively as part of the analysis in the previous chapters, those excerpts were used to illustrate a particular concept, finding or practice. A reader, going through the previous chapters, cannot possibly gain a comprehensive understanding of the history and trajectory of a given company in the main book text; this section allows for a more in-depth reading, one company at a time. The company profiles are organized in the order of when each of the enterprises was founded.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1974, a well-known research problem in Statistical Mechanics entitled “To determine and define the probability function P.sub.2 of a particle hitting a predetermined area, given all its parameters of generation and ejection.” was openly solicited for its solution from research and development organizations in U.S.A. One of many proposed solutions of the problem, initiated at that time, is by means of the TRAJECTORY SOLID ANGLE (TSA). TSA is defined as the integral of the dot product of the unit tangent of the particle’s trajectory to the vector area divided by the square of the position vector connecting between the point of ejection and that of the surface to be hit. The invention provides: (1) The precise and the unique solution of a previously unsolved P.sub.2 problem: (2) Impacts to the governmental NRC safety standards and DOD weapon systems and many activities in the Department of Energy; (3) Impacts to update the contents of text books of physics and mathematics of all levels; (4) Impacts to the scientific instruments with applications in high technologies. The importance of TRAJECTORY SOLID ANGLE can be quoted from a letter by the late Institute Professor P. M. Morse of MIT who reviewed the DOE proposal P7900450 (reference No. 7) in 1979 and addressed to the inventor. “If the TRAJECTORY SOLID ANGLE is correct it will provide a revolutionary concept in physics.”

Abstract:
Resumen: En 1966 Robert Venturi publica Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture. Abstract: In 1966 Robert Venturi publishes Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture. This book represents one of the most serious allegations against the limitations of the modern architecture. Conceived as a visual essay, with a collection of examples from different times and places, the text of Venturi denotes a strong hostility against the functionalist positions of the orthodox Modern architecture. Paradoxically, in the book of Venturi, Le Corbusier appears as the most mentioned architect and the Villa Savoye -by surprise- as the most quoted work. In opposition of the classical view of Le Corbusier’s work, the analysis of Venturi represents a new fresh look and alternative view of his theoretical positions. Through his multiple strategies based on the phenomenology of complexity and contradiction, Venturi discovered the intense and vibrant architecture of Le Corbusier who, without ever renouncing his modern convictions, he didn’t succumb to them. In ASME 2013 Power Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/power2013-98099.

Full text
Abstract:
In assessing reduction of concrete strength under irradiated conditions, reference levels are introduced: 1×1020 n/cm2 for fast neutrons and 2×1010 rad (2×105 kGy) for gamma-rays. Concrete structures are regarded as sound as long as irradiance levels accumulated during long-term operation are less than the reference levels. Most experimental investigations of irradiation effects on concrete were performed in the 1960’s and 1970’s. However, there is no good explanation of how concrete deteriorates under neutron and gamma-ray irradiation. Hilsdorf put the primal irradiation test data together to investigate effects of irradiance levels on residual strength ratio of concrete [1]. The reference levels were obtained from his paper. However, the test conditions in which the data quoted by Hilsdorf were obtained are very different from the irradiation and heat conditions usually found in a Light Water Reactor (LWR). This paper summarizes the interactions between radiation and concrete components and presents the results of gamma-ray irradiation tests on cement paste in order to provide a better understanding of the deterioration mechanisms of concrete under irradiation and heat conditions in LWRs.

Abstract:
The background color of Russian literature and Russian painting art in the 19th century is gloomy and heavy, and there exists text intertextuality between them, which is different from single text and single painting. Literary words and painting invisible words quote, permeate, insinuate and rewrite each other. Literature is the writing of painting, and painting is the color of literature. The main line of literature development and the main line of painting development seem to be twisted together like a rope, presenting spiral development, closely linked, complementary and inseparable. The same value orientation and aesthetic purpose have intertextuality, mutual influence, mutual interaction and mutual transformation, no matter in creation method, theme, artistic style or creation background. Direct description or sharp pen, or by the protagonist of indirect irony, using realistic and critical realism creation method, revealing the tsarist autocracy savage, dissatisfaction with the reality in protest of rebellion, as well as being bullied and oppressed pain and struggle, at the same time reflects the immortality of the Russian national literature and art achievement.

Abstract:
In 2012 and 2013 Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) performed full installation testing (bend, roller, tensioner and friction clamp) on pipes with different types of coating ranging from three layer polypropylene to thick insulation coating. The material property data as supplied by the coaters and/or the material suppliers appeared to have insufficient details for HMC to develop a model for the coated pipes. In order to obtain the missing details, HMC undertook a program of material finger printing for all coating materials used in the recent full scale testing in order to establish our own baseline for material properties. The reasons for doing so were; i) the data sheets from different suppliers of similar products were based on different test procedures and the results were not directly comparable, ii) initial testing indicated that the results quoted on the data sheets could not always be achieved by HMC and iii) the data as provided by the suppliers appeared to be not sufficient to be used for material models for finite element analysis. The focus to date has been on polyurethane based insulation materials, both for line pipe coating and for field joint coating, although the plan is to continue with polypropylene based insulation materials. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the setup of the full scale level winder and bend tests, the measurements and observations from the tests, the preliminary finite element analyses of the coating and the findings from the finger printing testing to date.
