Abstract:
This article is a condensed translation from Chinese of the original PhD thesis by Dr Mo Jingqi and illustrates how international accreditation was introduced in China during a time of rapid government structural change. The article is valuable from three perspectives: first, it provides a rare insight into the means for introducing change in the education system in China; secondly, it describes the evolution of the role of the National Center for Curriculum and Textbook Development, a non-governmental organization, and how it became authorized by the Ministry of Education to implement education policy in China; and thirdly, the idea of transplanting into China a joint accreditation system for international schools is by itself a major historical change, the model of which may one day expand to other types of schools in China. It should be noted that the titles of Chinese references have not been translated as they can be found only in Chinese language. In addition, during those years of rapid change, the titles and roles of many government organizations also changed, including that of the National Center for School Curriculum and Textbook Development (NCCT). It is important to appreciate the challenges of language translation as many of the concepts have different meanings in Chinese and have changed during that time period. This includes the meanings of ‘international school’ and ‘accreditation’.

Abstract:
This survey examines how mechanical engineers are being prepared to be responsible stewards of the environment by offering a multi-channeled look at a diverse collection of twelve US colleges and universities, with connections to the larger global context. This study enumerates the external influences of professional organizations, those responsible for program accreditation (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)), professional conduct (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), and licensure (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, National Society of Professional Engineers). At the curricular level, this study presents current mechanical engineering curricula via core courses (required at most institutions) and non-core courses (required at a minority of institutions or elective courses). The curriculum study identifies fifteen core courses and uses the Open Syllabus Project and online bookstores to identify a representative textbook and classify the environmental content therein. Immediate results show the environment receiving sparse treatment in core course textbooks, institutions having zero environment-focused degree requirements, and a tendency towards offering electives that are narrowly focused on green technologies. Elective offerings mirror ABET’s recent move away from emphasizing the “broad education necessary to understand the impact” of engineering solutions to instead “consider the impact of” engineering solutions in an environmental context. Overall, the environmental education mechanical engineers are receiving is insufficient in amount and lacking in scientific and ethical foundation. Ideally, every mechanical engineering program should include coordinated environmental content throughout the curriculum and require at least one course that teaches both environmental design principles and the importance of environmental stewardship. A novel approach eschews the typical artes mechanicae course structure to teach environmental stewardship in the artes liberales educational tradition, emphasizing multi-dimensional thinking by employing great books style discussions of seminal scientific, ethical, and technological works.

Abstract:
Deficiencies in medical school nutrition education have been noted since the 1960s. Nutrition-related non-communicable diseases, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and obesity, are now the most common, costly, and preventable health problems in the US. Training medical students to assess diet and nutritional status and advise patients about a healthy diet, exercise, body weight, smoking, and alcohol consumption are critical to reducing chronic disease risk. Barriers to improving medical school nutrition content include lack of faculty preparation, limited curricular time, and the absence of funding. Several new LCME standards provide important impetus for incorporating nutrition into existing medical school curriculum as self-directed material. Fortunately, with advances in technology, electronic learning platforms, and web-based modules, nutrition can be integrated and assessed across all four years of medical school at minimal costs to medical schools. Medical educators have access to a self-study nutrition textbook, Medical Nutrition and Disease, Nutrition in Medicine© online modules, and the NHLBI Nutrition Curriculum Guide for Training Physicians. This paper outlines how learner-directed nutrition content can be used to meet several US and Canadian LCME accreditation standards. The health of the nation depends upon future physicians’ ability to help their patients make diet and lifestyle changes.

Abstract:
Health Care services is considered as an amalgamation between the doctor undergoing the examination and laboratory personnel behind the proper diagnosis of the patient. It has evolved to a large extent from a simple process of examination to handling the prescription to the patient. During this evolution, there has been a remarkable development in the field of laboratory diagnosis. A good laboratory is abided by the rule of quality services including quality control; both internal and external. External quality assessment program contributes to the long term accuracy of the analytical method used by the laboratory. It determines the number of quality element of the practicing laboratory and helps in the upliftment of the status of the laboratory to laboratory accreditation and certification. This review article is intended to review the importance of the external quality assessment program over internal quality control, its need in the laboratory and the current practices in external quality assessment. Medline search was done for the articles published in English language from 1945 to 2018. Keywords employed to search the articles were external quality assessment, EQA programs, quality assurance, and quality control in clinical biochemistry, respectively. We searched for any articles with the details of external quality assessment tools that were original articles, review, editorial and the official website of the EQAS program. The unavailable articles were searched through research gate and the authors were requested for full text. A total of 5 full text original research article were found and rest of the articles like review article, editorial, national policy were studied in detail. Standard textbooks for clinical chemistry and chapters for EQA under quality assurance was reread in detail. Studies and policy makers have depicted that External Quality Assessment scheme (EQAS) as an integral component for the efficient and high quality laboratory operation. The western countries haizve their own laboratory accreditation body which conducts the EQAS program and offers participation to other clinical laboratories. Countries in South East Asia have shown to be burgeoning in the field of EQA program with establishment of their own laboratory accreditation bodies and incorporating the non-accredited laboratories in EQA programs.

Abstract:
AbstractLaboratory medicine in the healthcare system has recently been recognized as a fundamental service in the clinical decision-making process. Therefore, the notion of patient safety in laboratory medicine must be recognized as the assurance that harm to patients will be avoided, safe care outcomes will be enhanced through error prevention, and the total testing process (TTP) will be continuously improved.Although the goal for patient safety is zero errors, and although laboratory professionals have made numerous efforts to reduce errors in the last few decades, current research into laboratory-related diagnostic errors highlights that: (a) errors occur at every step of the TTP, mainly affecting phases at clinical interfaces; (b) despite the improvement strategies adopted, analytical quality remains a challenge; (c) errors are linked not only to clinical chemistry tests, but also to new, increasingly complex diagnostic testing.Medical laboratories must therefore implement effective quality assurance tools to identify and prevent errors in order to guarantee the reliability of laboratory information. Accreditation in compliance with the International Standard ISO 15189 represents the first step, establishing processes with excellence requirements and greater expectations of staff competency. Another important step in preventing errors and ensuring patient safety is the development of specific educational and training programs addressed to all professionals involved in the process, in which both technical and administrative skills are integrated. A wide variety of information is provided by a robust quality management system and consensus-approved Quality Indicators (QI) that identify undesirable events, evaluate the risk to the patient, and call for corrective and preventive actions. However, the effectiveness of the system depends on the careful analysis of data collected and on staff awareness of the importance of laboratory medicine to the healthcare process. The main task of the new generation of laboratory professionals should be to gain experience in “clinical laboratory stewardship.” In order to safeguard patients, laboratory professionals must assist clinicians in selecting the right test for the right patient at the right time and facilitate the interpretation of laboratory information.

Abstract:
The development of smaller, mobile, sophisticated ultrasound machines has been central to echocardiography becoming an everyday tool in the intensive care setting. However, the parallel process of ensuring quality studies are obtained from these machines places a focus on training standards for the doctors operating them. In response, credentialing and certification programmes in advanced critical care echocardiography have come into existence around the world, and although they are not identical, the programmes share many of the same features whether it is run in France, Scotland, Australia, the United States, or elsewhere. The challenge of determining the optimum training programme is an ongoing process and will no doubt evolve further over time. Yet the development of the programmes to date demonstrate how far critical care physicians have come over the past two decades in achieving quality care in the use of echocardiography.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the historical evolution of neuropsychiatry in Brazil and Argentina, with a view to understanding what the future may hold for the field in South America. A brief historical context is given, before the limitations of neuropsychiatric services in Brazil are discussed, with reference to the lack of attention afforded in education and training and the absence of long-established links between the psychiatric and neurological communities. Meanwhile, although neuropsychiatry only gained official recognition and accreditation in Argentina in 2007, there is a precedent of neuropsychiatric study in the country dating back to Charcot’s theories in the nineteenth century, carried forward by expatriate psychiatrists such as Edmundo Fischer in the twentieth. The future development of neuropsychiatry in South America remains uncertain due to the unscientific distinction between psychiatry and neurology, leading to simplistic diagnoses such as classifying Parkinson’s disease as simply a ‘movement disorder’ or schizophrenia as purely ‘psychotic’.

Abstract:
Engineering practitioners often find themselves required to locate technical and non-technical information from a variety of sources. They may generate quotes, research equipment specifications, determine market shares, delineate a proposed manufacturing process, find company profiles, retrieve demographics data, certify compliance with international or national standards, or research any one of countless other pieces of information. This may involve books, CDs, periodicals, newspapers, corresponding via email, fax, letters or the worldwide web, across several languages. Few classroom projects address practitioner’s needs for broad information research skills. This paper details strategies for a unique student research project leading to useful experience applicable to engineering and engineering technology practitioners in any discipline, in any locality. The project could be instituted in virtually any class at any level and run in any language. It is readily adaptable to changing technology, any textbook, and has now been in use since 1982. As implemented at Purdue University, it has been cited by multiple ABET re-accreditation teams for innovation and as an excellent example of continuously improved instruction. Over the years it has grown to become one of the more noteworthy experiences cited in both student exit surveys and in graduate surveys.
