Abstract:
Purpose The cost of textbooks continues to rise for college students along with the cost of tuition. These costs can impact student success. In response to the rising costs, higher education institutions have started affordability initiatives. These initiatives are frequently housed in academic libraries. Joyner Library at East Carolina University (ECU) addresses affordability through three initiatives: Course-Adopted Textbook program, Alternative Textbook Mini-Grant program and Streaming Video licensing. Design/methodology/approach This paper will explore the above-mentioned three programs in-depth and perform a sustainability analysis on each program. Findings After reviewing the affordability initiatives discussed in the case study, the authors found that there were varying degrees of sustainability for the programs. Originality/value ECU is not alone in addressing affordability through multiple initiatives, and this case study paper will address long-term sustainability of these initiatives, especially during a time when libraries are experiencing shrinking budgets.

Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. for PALSave, an affordable education initiative that will combat rising textbook costs and their detrimental effects on student success and retention. The average cost of textbooks annually is about $1,300. Research from The Student Public Interest Research Groups and U.S. PIRG Education Fund shows that some students have to borrow more to pay for college, are likely not to buy required materials at some point, and might even drop a class because of text prices. PALNI offers the PALSave program in response to this need and to help provide a proactive solution to textbook affordability. The grant will enable PALNI to support course transformations using course materials which are free to students, focusing on Open Educational Resources worldwide.

Abstract:
This dissertation examined the relationship of student textbook purchasing practices to student success and satisfaction in selected general education undergraduate courses at a Florida public community college. The study utilized secondary data sources, specifically bookstore purchasing data, student records, and student satisfaction survey results. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA were used to determine relationships. Seven specific research questions were answered, and statistically significant results were identified as a result of the data analysis. The results indicated that there was a relationship between the type of textbook/course material purchased or rented and a student’s final grade in a course. There was also a relationship between digital media textbooks/course materials and lower course satisfaction. When reviewing when students elected not to purchase any textbook/course material for a course that required one, those students reflected lower course grades than students that had access to the textbook/course material in some capacity. When students were provided with an option for their textbook/course material media type, traditional textbooks (paperback or hardcover print) were the most frequently selected. Finally, the results indicated that there was a relationship between higher priced textbooks/course materials and lower grades, when compared to lower priced textbooks/course materials, and course satisfaction scores also reflected lower scores with higher priced textbooks/course materials.

Abstract:
Faculty have been identified as critical players in the implementation of textbook affordability efforts at community colleges. Furthermore, emerging lower-cost alternatives to traditional textbooks present a wide and growing range of options that may help further efforts. This study sought to examine more closely the role of faculty with respect to textbook cost-lowering initiatives. The researcher utilized in-depth interviews to gain a rich picture of the experiences, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of nine full-time community college faculty as they confronted textbook affordability efforts and textbook alternatives. The interview data were analyzed using a thematic analysis process. Five major themes and three minor themes were identified. The five major themes were: (a) campus administrators support, but do not mandate, efforts; (b) frequent edition revisions frustrate faculty; (c) departmental approaches to textbook selection vary; (d) content, then affordability, drive selection choices; and (e) faculty have mixed feelings about textbook alternatives. The three minor themes were: (a) faculty efforts to save students money are thwarted by campus bookstores and financial aid policies; (b) English faculty benefit from public domain readings; and (c) more faculty participating in textbook selection means more difficulty deciding on a text. Implications and recommendations were offered for community college leaders, campus bookstores, publishers, and future researchers.<br>Ed.D.<br>Doctorate<br>Educational and Human Sciences<br>Education and Human Performance<br>Educational Leadership; Higher Education Track

Nuhn, Peggy L., and Karen F. Kaufmann. Supporting Transfer Student Success. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216021544.

Full text
Abstract:
This research-based book with practical applications teaches academic librarians to support their transfer students effectively at both universities and community colleges, even when transfer students' information literacy needs differ from those of other students. Colleges and universities across the United States serve a large and growing population of transfer students. Current estimates suggest that more than one third of college students transfer from one institution of higher education to another at least once. At some institutions, transfer students compose up to fifty to sixty percent of the new incoming class. Academic librarians' understanding of the demographics and potential needs of transfer students is essential to supporting their success and mitigating "transfer shock." Just as public libraries often bridge gaps between individuals and services, academic libraries can proactively support the often unique needs of transfer students by spearheading textbook affordability initiatives, developing innovative programming, and making appropriate referrals to non-library student services. In this practical guide to supporting transfer students, authors Peggy L. Nuhn and Karen F. Kaufmann teach academic librarians how to optimize information literacy instruction, support research, help reduce stress, and connect the library to virtual students. They emphasize the importance of establishing partnerships with feeder institutions and other campus departments to best support transfer student success.

Abstract:
Abstract About 50% of the world population has limited or no access to basic health services. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease, the largest death toll in the adult population, receive limited or no treatment in world regions with low socioeconomic status. High blood pressure, the leading risk factor for mortality, is five times better controlled in high-income groups than in the lowest ones. Obesity in the Americas involves near 30% of the population, affecting predominantly the lower socioeconomic groups with diabetes prevalence progressively increasing among them. Access to health care providers and drug therapy for these conditions is significantly compromised in those populations along with reduced drug availability in regional stocks and their affordability. Negative factors such as pollution, urbanization, and built environment interfere the access of low-income populations to healthier neighborhoods and food providers, contributing to disease and mortality. In contrast, current and future advancements in cardiovascular care, prevention, and healthier neighborhoods are or will be available to the higher income groups of our society. The authors collaborating in this textbook using their experience in technical and regional aspects of CVP in low socioeconomic status populations provide in their chapter’s suggestions of possible remedial actions.

Abstract:
The World Health Organization defines essential medicines as those which satisfy the primary healthcare needs of the population. In 2013, the World Health Organization introduced a new section on medicines for pain and palliative care in the 18th edition of the Model List of Essential Medicine including 15 medicines for the most common symptoms in life-limiting health conditions. More recently, the Lancet Commission on palliative care developed an essential package which also includes equipment and human resources in addition to the essential medicines. The Lancet Commission specified that in order to achieve universal health coverage, coverage of the essential package is recommended by dedicated, pro-poor, public or publicly mandated funding and for all relevant health conditions. However, in many regions of the world, all or some of the essential medicines are not available at all, or if they are available in the country, they are regularly out of stock in the local pharmacy, out-of-pocket costs are so high that patients cannot afford the medicines, or whole families become impoverished buying treatment for their loved one. Problems with accessibility, affordability, and availability are particularly evident with opioid analgesics such as morphine. However, accessibility, affordability, and availability of essential medicines is a pivotal prerequisite for the delivery of quality palliative care.

Abstract:
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a versatile and evolving technology for visualizing the structure, function, and metabolism of the living human brain. All kinds of MRI data can be acquired without exposing subjects to ionizing radiation or radioactive isotopes. Installing the hardware for MRI represents a major capital investment, of approximately £1.5 million. For these three reasons of versatility, safety, and (relative) affordability, MRI continues to be the dominant brain-imaging technique in psychiatric practice and research. In this chapter, we introduce the principles and practicalities of MRI and describe common methods of structural MRI data acquisition and analysis. Chapter 2.3.8 on functional MRI provides greater detail on statistical issues arising in image analysis.

Abstract:
The health, social, and economic effects of alcohol use are experienced by drinkers, families, communities, and society at large. Alcohol use is inextricably linked to a range of mental health problems. It may be the primary problem or part of the co-morbidities that accompany so much mental illness. Alcohol use is also associated with many other health conditions, including liver disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer, and is strongly linked to violence, accidents, self-harm, suicide, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. This chapter outlines both primary and secondary prevention approaches to reduce alcohol-related harm that are evidence-based. Primary prevention approaches include regulating alcohol affordability, availability, and promotion, and providing information and education. Secondary prevention approaches include early identification and brief advice.

Abstract:
Online treatment programmes extend the reach and effectiveness of psychological interventions for suicide prevention. Such programmes could teach individuals relevant self-management techniques, including emotion regulation or other techniques used in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). Advantages such as privacy, low-threshold accessibility, scalability, flexibility, affordability, and standardization increase the appeal of online treatment programmes, but limitations and risks must be considered, including data security breaches, insufficient integration with other care services, lacking efficacy, and potential harm. Many online treatment programmes are broadly CBT-based, but evidence suggests that they might be improved by addressing suicide-specific issues in a more targeted manner. Because online programmes differ in content, interactivity, and other aspects, the safety and efficacy of each programme must be examined separately, but methodologically adequate trials are still rare. Research suggests that safe and effective online treatment programmes for suicide prevention should be developed, and must prove their merit in adequately designed studies.

Abstract:
In the future, data will connect everything and everybody. Open data is related to transparency, affordability, and participative education. The open pedagogy will be concerned with a specific feature of fragmented content. This chapter provides an informal introduction to micro-learning and nano-learning, especially as it may be applied to open textbook use and development. What is fragmented content? What is nano-curriculum? What is nano-learning? In which ways are they similar, and what distinguishes one from another? The principal characteristics of each are described. An assumption, made explicit from the start, is that fragmented content should not just be used as content, but as a strong correlation between the content, context, and learning process. This innovation is described involving a metacognitive collaborative activity “student as a partner.” Based on the outcomes of this project, a further methodological idea was undertaken. This chapter suggests that fragmented content is an excellent means for enhancing the self-regulation competence of university student.

Abstract:
This chapter highlights the specific features of open education from the perspective of dynamic (social) equilibrium. It is an attempt to bring the current lines of frontier research in pedagogy with the emergence of open textbooks for the global audience. To broaden the opportunities of open textbooks for self-regulated learning, this chapter analyzes the affordability of open education and the feasibility of open textbooks versus non-open textbooks. On the first line, the open education represents a transition from closed to the open system where co-exist a bio-digital fusion of various objects, processes, and environments. On the second line, the open education is an attempt to explore the complexity of global issues related to the emergence of open textbooks. The objectives of this chapter are to discuss (1) the added value of industrialization and digitalization on instructional design of textbooks, (2) the issues of open data, open knowledge, and open pedagogy, and (3) the terminology and the specific features of open textbooks.

Abstract:
Many institutions focus textbook affordability efforts through open educational resources, but that isn’t the only option available to provide students with affordable course materials. This paper outlines how the University of Central Florida Libraries successfully leveraged its e-book collections to support textbook affordability efforts. A description of the initiative is provided from three perspectives; an associate director, the textbook affordability librarian, and an acquisitions librarian. Included will be the genesis of the program, methodology used, and how data collected from the initiative were used to gain a new position at the university, a Textbook Affordability Librarian. As part of this initiative, various avenues were developed for faculty outreach and collaboration. Instead of a solo effort, there was a strong emphasis on collaboration with internal and external library partners. The final part of the paper is a discussion of considerations for purchasing materials for use as a course text.

Abstract:
Abstract: Food security is a major concern in today’s context which encompasses availability, affordability, and nutritional quality of food for the population. In Sri Lanka, around 55 traditional and indigenous yams and tuber crop species were identified, and they grow in almost everywhere in the country. Tubers are in a wider range of cultivars, and it is characterized by increased adoptability to different agroecological zones. Convenience propagation methods, wider adoptability, rich in carbohydrates, and less vulnerability to pests and diseases are vital features in promoting tuber crops to supplement main courses in human diet. This research attempt to review of nutritional and agricultural value of five selected tuber crop species as follows: Elephant foot yam (Amorphophallus paenoiifolius), three Rajala species (Dioscorea alata, Dioscorea bulbifera, Dioscorea sativa), and Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea). Data was gathered from relevant textbooks and electronic databases include PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Journals following the PRISMA model. Traditional root and tuber crops are identified as a rich source of carbohydrates, energy, minerals, vitamins, pharmacological properties, bioactive compounds, and with relatively convenient in cultivation in a wider spectrum of agroecological zones. It is easy to cultivate, and they can grow even in unfavorable harsh climate conditions. It is required relatively less agricultural input and can gain more income and output. Inclusiveness of the selected crops into main meals would increase the diversity of the food intake and helps food security. Make aware of those yams among public is also beneficial as they have good amount of carbohydrate, fibers and many pharmacological properties which relieves diseases as well.
