Abstract:
In order to analyse whether or not the characteristic of scientific inquiry activities of textbooks in China satisfy the requirements of China’s new curriculum reforms, content analysis method was adopted to analyze scientific inquiry activities in junior middle school physical textbooks (grade 8) of five editions authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The results show that the inquiry activities in the five versions of textbooks in China cannot meet the requirements of authentic scientific inquiry regardless of the degree of openness or operationality of cognitive processes and are not conducive to develop students’ scientific inquiry skills and scientific reasoning skills. The authors of science textbooks should take note of the latest insights from the world of academia and develop some new authentic scientific inquiry tasks to update textbooks in a prompt manner in order to improve the students’ abilities of scientific inquiry. For the textbook reviewers, the present research not only provides them with specific findings, but also provides them with a method to evaluate textbooks. Abstract:
It is obvious that the textbooks play a key role in enhancing the quality of teaching and learning. The good quality textbooks must meet the criteria or standard as a textbook. This paper aims to describe the accuracy of materials provided in the Bahasa Indonesia textbook for the first grade of Senior High School curriculum of 2013. This study adopted the content analysis method to analyze the data. The findings deriving from this study reveal that the accuracy of learning material provided in Bahasa Indonesia textbook for the first grade of Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas) curriculum of 2013 published by Erlangga has adequately met the standard requirements of Board of National Education Standards (Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan, BSNP) for the accuracy of learning material of a textbook. However, this study found some weaknesses in the textbook as follows: (1) The textbook has not provided a ‘Competency Map’ containing principles used by students to achieve their learning goals and understand the learning materials provided in each chapter in order that the materials delivered can be well-structured. (2) The examples provided in the textbook are less relevant to the characteristics of diverse backgrounds and social statuses; contain the issues of ethnicity, religion, race, intergroup relations; and do not suit the needs. Abstract:
Summary Since textbooks are one of the integral components of the learning process, their evaluation is important to improve their correspondence to the learners’ needs and goals. Particularly, in societies in which English is used as a foreign language, ESP textbooks play a crucial role in developing students’ skills of English in job-related situations. The present paper discusses the quality of ESP textbooks by performing a case study of an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) textbook “English for the students of Visual Arts (Painting, Graphics, & Sculpture)” developed and published by SAMT as the pioneer in developing ESP textbooks in Iranian academic setting. The study tries to investigate the overall suitability and pedagogical value of the ESP textbook and the features which make it distinguishable among its global counterparts. The study was carried out by drawing on a model proposed by McDonough and Shaw (2003), with an intention to evaluate the present quality of the Visual Arts ESP textbook critically. Both visual and content-based aspects of the book were thoroughly evaluated to identify their general pedagogical value by using the method of qualitative descriptive analysis. In that way, the Visual Arts textbook was analysed on the basis of the framework and guidelines suggested in the available checklist. In addition, semi structured interviews with graduate students, English instructors, subjectspecific instructors, and experts in Visual Arts Courses such as Painting were performed to clarify their opinions about the need for ESP and to analyze their perceptions of English language in general and English for special purposes in particular. The findings of the present study have revealed that there is a fundamental necessity for revision and development of future ESP textbooks in Iranian context. Moreover, the findings imply that traditional materials and frameworks are not responsive to students’ needs and genre knowledge in majors of the Visual Arts.

Abstract:
The current study aimed at analyzing an English textbook titled English Alive used by English teachers from some senior high schools in Curup, Bengkulu, Indonesia. The textbook analysis was oriented towards two domains, namely genres and lexical density, by applying a content analysis method. This study revealed that the English Alive textbook had five genres: reading materials in the narrative, report, analytical exposition, spoof, and hortatory exposition. Those genres were embedded in sixteen passages distributed to the entire textbook, and those passages were mapped into ten units. Lexical density measurement indicated that most of the passages were categorized as easy to be comprehended, and a few passages were categorized as too easy to be comprehended. However, text genres in this textbook did not sufficiently conform to the distribution of English reading materials as suggested by the K-13 curriculum. Some reading passages did not seem contributive to students’ English acquisition according to comprehensible input theory and other related findings. Hence, the English Alive textbook could be used in today’s context and needs as supplementary material, but the primary reading materials should be resting upon K-13-driven English textbooks. Strength and weaknesses were also identified from the English Alive textbook. The former could be noted that this textbook adopted the constructivism theory and genre-based approach properly. However, the latter indicated that the provision of genre materials did not entirely conform to essential competencies formulated in the current K-13 curriculum of English education. Further studies could analyze more textbooks to help teachers choose appropriate English textbooks.

Abstract:
In this study, we intend to find out what the progression looks like when it comes to representations of women in childrens history text books from the 1960´s to year 2007. We have focused on the most frequently marginalized working women for the benefit of the political active women as queens and other politicians. Here it is, instead, peasant wives, the woman home workers, seamstresses, burghers, craftsmen and other working women in these groups who´s being studied and whether they have a larger place today compared to the 1960's. We also want to find out how they are constructed and produced. Are they active and operates forward or a appendage of the political history? We have seen in our analyze that the progression is good, but there’s still much work to do.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to compare selected sixth, seventh and eighth grades mathematics textbooks from Turkey, Singapore and the United States of America and explore their implications for presenting same opportunity to learn to the students at the same grade level. In this study, the selected books were analyzed in terms of whether they included perimeter, area and volume topics, how they presented the topics on the basis of the selected features and the complexity of to-be-solved mathematical problems related to the topics. Some similarities and differences were observed among the textbooks. It was found that the Turkish textbooks are inclusive in terms of subtopics related to perimeter, area and volume. However, the number of pages dedicated to present the topics is the highest in the Singaporean textbooks. That is, in comparison to the Turkish textbooks, the Singaporean textbooks include fewer number of subtopics related to perimeter, area and volume, but the subtopics are presented in a more detail manner. These books are also rich in terms of mathematically relevant illustrations that make the topics more understandable for students. While the U.S textbooks benefit heavily from technology to present the topics, especially by using three-dimensional shapes
the Turkish and Singaporean textbooks do not make use of technology. The textbooks do not show a difference in terms of complexity of to-be-solved problems. Since all of them mostly include the problems with moderate complexity. Despite there is not any difference among the textbooks in terms of the complexity of to-be-solved problems, there is a difference in terms of the number of to-be-solved problems in the textbooks. The Singaporean textbooks encompass more to-be-solved problems compared to others. The study was concluded by providing some useful suggestions to cover the perimeter, area and volume topics in a way that makes students&rsquo
learning easier and to present same opportunity to learn to the students.

Abstract:
The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to analyze if there are differences in the way of explainingthe causes of The Great Emigration from Sweden to America in the late 1800s/beginningof the 1900s. Due to the researcher’s education the thesis has a didactic, and comparativeperspective between how history textbooks aimed for Middle School and High School andhow the exhibition Drömmen om Amerika (= The Dream of America), in Vaxjo, Sweden, explains this phenomena. A special analysis scheme is applied to the sources in a way to makeit clear to the reader how informative they are and how much effort they put in the explaining. The outcome of the analysis shows that the exhibition gives the visitor a wider, deeper, and more informative depiction of The Great Emigration, compared to the textbooks’ moresummarized extracts. However, many teachers and pupils consider it difficult to applymuseums’ productions into the every-day-history-education in the classroom. In order tofollow the policy documents made for the school, teachers often use the adapted-for-school-curriculum-textbooks as a central part of the education, instead of museums. Comparing thetextbooks against each other, the analysis shows that the Middle-School-textbooks give morecauses to The Great Emigration but the High-School-textbooks explain the causes in a muchmore informative way.

Abstract:
In this paper three commonly used school textbooks for religion studies are analyzed using post-colonial theory in search for colonial power discourses. Passages where Hindu religion is described as “our” opposite are highlighted. Also occurrences of ethnocentrism in general and eurocentrism in particular as well as exoticism are brought to the light and discussed. In an effort to connect the theoretical with the practical an interview study is made with active teachers. The main goal is to see how big the risk, with using “tainted” textbooks, is. In the interview study questions about how large role textbooks plays in their classrooms and lesson planning and how often they bought new textbooks were asked. The results of the studies are mildly positive. Even though traces of old colonial thoughts were found in the school textbooks it seems as though the colonial discourse within the the textbooks sphere is weakened, since the newest of the textbooks analyzed did not have many colonial traces compared to the oldest one which had plenty. Another positive result of the studies is that teachers' attitudes towards textbook usage seems to have changed. This means that even though your textbook might have a colonial discourse there is no guarantee that it will stick on your students. Since textbooks now is seen as merely another source of information compared to its earlier status as The Source of Information.

The aim of this study is to analyze how two different education books produce christianity and islam. The analyzed books is from 2003 and 2008 and the books are adapted for the last years of primary school. The meaning and translation of words is often a problem and can get the reader wrong understaning of the religion. The analyze include the perspective of this meaning and how the sacred things are described in each religion. The textanalyze is made with different criterias; the context, the pre- understanding and if the text is objectiv is some of the most important. The language is important too. Both books are produced in the occidental context which can be a problem when to describe islam. The religion is not the same here and preconcenptions can occure. When to put islam in an occidential context and describe it will not get an objecive describtion. Both books are focused on information and will get the reader as much data as posible.

The development of plurilingual competence has been increasingly seen as an important aspect of foreign language teaching. Since textbooks usually play a central role in language classrooms, they are supposed to contribute to the development of plurilingual teaching. This paper focuses on three textbooks for German as a foreign language used in the Swedish upper-secondary school with the purpose of finding out the extent to which they include components that encourage the pupils' development of both language awareness and language learning awareness in order to enhance the acquisition of German as a third language in accordance with the concept of plurilingualism didactics. The analysis of the results shows that the basic guidelines of the didactics of plurilingualism are taken into consideration only to a very limited extent in the Swedish textbooks.

AbstractSince the end of the nineteenth century, fat grafting has become one of the most promising treatments for posttraumatic deformities and more in general for scars. Its easy application and collection have made it as the ideal therapy to restore volume and pliability, and contour and to prevent symptoms as pain. In these years the application method, the indications and the guidelines have been changed many times. In this chapter, we analyze why fat grafting is becoming so popular in the twentieth century and what is the scientific rational to use autologous adipose tissue. We will also discuss the current guidelines and the possible applications. At the end, we will also present some new fields such as the application of autologous fat grafting in the treatment of the hypertrophic scars and how we can try to improve its engraftment using external mechanical forces (the external negative pressure therapy) and/or the plasma-rich platelet (PRP).

Abstract:
AbstractIt is critical to understand, analyze and improve the work system of medical residents in order to support the care processes in which they are involved, as well as their educational processes. The discipline of human factors (or ergonomics) (HFE) provides systems concepts and methods to improve the multi-faceted work system of medical residents and, therefore, care processes and educational processes, and outcomes for both patients and residents. In this chapter, we apply the SEIPS (Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety) model to the work system of residents, and use it to explain how the outcomes of patient safety and medical resident well-being are related. Various challenges need to be addressed in order to improve residents’ work system. In particular, it is critical to adopt a systems approach that can optimize multiple outcomes for a range of stakeholders. In line with the participatory ergonomics approach, we contend that residents have a critical role to play in improving their work system; we describe various ways that this can be accomplished.

Abstract:
AbstractPrevious studies have shown that diagram use is effective in mathematical word problem solving. However, they have also revealed that students manifest many problems in using diagrams for such purposes. A possible reason is an inadequacy in students’ understanding of variations in types of problems and the corresponding kinds of diagrams appropriate to use. In the present study, a preliminary investigation was undertaken of how such correspondences between problem types and kinds of diagrams are represented in textbooks. One government-approved textbook series for elementary school level in Japan was examined for the types of mathematical word problems, and the kinds of diagrams presented with those problems. The analyses revealed significant differences in association between kinds of diagrams and types of problems. More concrete diagrams were included with problems involving change, combination, variation, and visualization of quantities; while number lines were more often used with comparison and variation problems. Tables and graphs corresponded to problems requiring organization of quantities; and more concrete diagrams and graphs to problems involving quantity visualization. These findings are considered in relation to the crucial role of textbooks and other teaching materials in facilitating strategy knowledge acquisition in students.

Abstract:
AbstractIt is generally considered beneficial for learners to construct and use appropriate diagrams when solving mathematical word problems. However, previous research has indicated that learners tend not to use diagrams spontaneously. In the present study, we analyzed textbooks in Japan and Canada, focusing on the possibility that such inadequacy in diagram use may be affected by the presence (or absence) of diagrams in textbooks, the kinds of diagrams that are included, and whether problems requiring the construction of diagrams are provided in those textbooks. One set each of Japanese and Canadian elementary school textbooks were analyzed, focusing on the chapters dealing with division. Results revealed that the Japanese textbooks contain worked examples and exercise problems accompanied by diagrams more than the Canadian textbooks. Furthermore, the Japanese textbooks often use line diagrams and tables that abstractly represent quantitative relationships and they include more problems that require students to use diagrams. However, to encourage students to use diagrams spontaneously, it may be necessary to include problems that scaffold the use of diagrams in a step-by-step manner in both the Canadian and the Japanese textbooks.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper describes an innovative assessment method that provides formative feedback on the effectiveness of an engineering textbook. We describe the development of the Text Learning Capture Method and the prior art that it is drawn from. We then go on to interpret and analyze the protocols captured with the method and describe the preliminary results generated with its application. Concrete examples of how the feedback enables us to identify the text’s readability, comprehensibility, and usability are given. From the analysis a list of questions was generated about how students learn from engineering textbooks. The textbook assessment work presented here was motivated by a desire on the part of the author of the textbook (hereafter the text-author in contrast to the authors of this paper) to understand more fully the role of this textbook in supporting student learning. We began with questions such as: “Do students relate to the real-world examples given?”; “How do students work through the equations?”; “How are figures utilized?”; “Are students excited by a textbook that uses a familiar multi-faceted artifact to demonstrate engineering principles?”. In our attempts to carefully answer these questions we generated questions such as: “Can learning from a text book be thought of as passive?”; “What constitutes effective learning from texts?”; “What are best reading practices?”; and “How much control does an author have over this?”.

Abstract:
Electronic textbooks have a potential to combine the teaching values of digital technology with didactic-methodological requirements that a textbook should meet and thus become a means of teaching capable of meeting the needs of today’s students and achieving modern educational goals. In order for an electronic textbook to have its expected effect, it is necessary that its concept takes into account certain theoretical and practical knowledge synthesized in the so-called quality standards. Although the theoretical and empirical research of electronic textbooks is at its very beginning and there is not even closely a rich body of knowledge as in the case of printed textbooks, certain postulates do exist and they need to be taken into account when creating and evaluating electronic textbooks. This paper uses the content analysis technique to examine the extent to which the electronic textbook On Language, published by Klett, meets the specific requirements of electronic textbooks. The results show that the analysed electronic textbook is between low and medium level of interactivity, contains a small number of multimedia elements and does not use the possibility of hyper textual links, but relies exclusively on a linear structure in the content presentation.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional fluid mechanics textbooks are generally written with problem sets comprised of closed, analytical solutions. However, it is recognized that complex flow fields are not easily represented in terms of a closed solution. A tool that allows the student to visualize complex flow phenomena in a virtual environment can significantly enhance the learning experience. Such a visualization tool allows the student to perform open-ended analyses and explore cause-effect relationships. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) brings these benefits into the learning environment for fluid mechanics. With these benefits in mind, FlowLab was introduced by Fluent Inc. in 2002. FlowLab may be described as a virtual fluids laboratory - a computer-based analysis and visualization package. Using this software, students solve predefined CFD exercises, either as homework or in a supervised laboratory or practicum setting. Predefined exercises facilitate the teaching of fluid mechanics and provide students with hands-on CFD experience, while avoiding many of the difficulties associated with learning a generalized CFD package. A new fluid mechanics textbook is scheduled for release in early 2005. This book includes FlowLab as a textbook companion, where student-friendly CFD exercises are employed to convey important concepts to the student. Because of the unique design of end-of-chapter homework problems in this book and the intimate coupling between these problems and the CFD software, students are introduced to engineering problems and concepts, as well as to CFD, via a structured learning process. The CFD exercises are not meant to stand alone; rather, they are designed to support and emphasize the theory and concepts taught in the textbook, which is the primary learning vehicle. Each homework problem has a specific fluid mechanics learning objective. Through use of the software, a second learning objective is also achieved, namely a CFD objective. The scope, content, and presentation of these CFD exercises are discussed in this paper. Additionally, one of the exercises is explained in detail to show the value of using CFD to teach introductory fluid mechanics to undergraduate engineers.

Abstract:
A number of scholars have studied gender representation in textbooks, but only a few studies focus on application of multimodal discourse analysis in exploring gender representation. The present study aims to analyze gender representation in two series of four L2 Mandarin textbooks written for Malaysian learners. The ratio of female and male characters as well as the representation of genders in visual and verbal resources are examined in this study. This study applies quantitative and qualitative method by calculating the frequency and occurrence and analyzing the representation of female and male. A multimodal discourse analysis is carried out, including linguistic and visual analysis, to figure out whether there is gender stereotype by investigating verbal and non-verbal (visual) resources of sampled textbooks. Both the ratio and the depiction of female and male characters are analyzed by using ATLAS.ti software. The findings have revealed that the ratio of female and male characters is generally unbalanced in sampled textbooks. Gender stereotypes exist dominantly in depiction of female and male characters, especially in social settings and domestic settings. The implications of this study are discussed in the context of second language teaching and learning to highlight the awareness of gender representation in L2 Mandarin textbooks.

Abstract:
This research deals with students’ abilities to read chemistry textbook images about dispersed systems. Secondary school students were included as the research participants, and their abilities to propose the titles of the realistic, conventional, and hybrid textbook images about dispersed systems, were analyzed. Additionally, their written interpretations about images contents were also analyzed. The collected data provided information about students’ misunderstandings about dispersed systems. These misunderstandings, some of which are the original outcome of this research, provided the significant results. In addition, it was found that students had the most difficulties with reading realistic textbook images. Namely, they relied on what they literally saw on the realistic image (i.e. photography) without providing proper connection with chemical contents about dispersed systems. Keywords: visual representations, reading images, images types, general chemistry.

Abstract:
The poster shows the results obtained in the project “Digital Music Analysis with the Techniques of the Music Encoding Initiative (MEI) using Anton Bruckner’s compositional studies as an example” (2017 to 2019). On the one hand, the project had the goal of presenting a digital edition of Anton Bruckner’s study book, which he produced during his lessons with Otto Kitzler from 1861 to 1863. An edition of the music in the textbook encoded with MEI and displayed using Verovio and the facsimile can be displayed simultaneously. On the other hand, an automated harmonic analysis of this music was to be designed. For this purpose, keys are recognized using the Krumhansl-Schmuckler algorithm that is based on a resource of pitch classes which are compared with reference values and thus their similarity is calculated. Based on this, chord recognitions are carried out, which are then linked to the keys in the last step and converted to a roman numeral analysis.
