Abstract:
Purpose Teachers, students, librarians, scholars and domain experts often spend a lot of time and effort to select good and suitable textbooks. This study aims to propose and construct a computer-aided bibliometric system to rate textbooks. Through the software system designed here, the quality of every textbook can be easily and quickly known. This system will benefit both scholars and librarians. Design/methodology/approach Four methods were used to evaluate textbooks in this study, including: questionnaire recommendation analysis, dissertation citation analysis, library circulation analysis and bibliography analysis. The system architecture includes three subsystems: the textbook indexing and searching subsystem, the statistics added-value analysis subsystem and the citation report inquiry subsystem. An example demonstrates the usability and validity of the proposed method and system. The example uses surveying textbooks. The following percentages were used in the correlation calculation: textbook citation percentage (TCP), textbook library circulation percentage (TLP) and textbook recommend percentage (TRP). Findings There are three textbook assessment methods applied in this study, including: dissertation citation, library circulation and questionnaire recommendation. Dissertation citations for textbooks have a high correlation value with library circulation. The frequency correlation calculation was 0.7, while the TCP, TLP and TRP correlation calculation was 0.84. Therefore, the dissertation citation method can be accepted to evaluate textbooks effectively. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first work related to evaluating surveying textbooks using a computer-aided bibliometrics system that can deal with large amounts of data and generate results quickly. This can be applied to other fields as well.

Abstract:
Architectural texts involve a great deal of CSIs that reflect the culture of a country. Translating these CSIs from Persian into English seems one of the key issues in the translation of architectural texts. This source-oriented descriptive study tried to investigate CSIs of the Persian architecture in order to examine the extent to which the translators/writers have succeeded in rendering CSIs, while translating them from Persian architecture into English or writing on the Persian Architecture in English. In addition, it tried to investigate the most frequently used strategies by writers/translators according to Van Doorslaer’s (2007) model. To serve research purposes, two textbooks on Iranian architecture (i.e., Introducing Persian Architecture by Pope and Abbasid Guest House by Ouliaienia) were sampled. The findings indicated that the translator (Ouliaienia) and the writer (Pope) were successful in finding appropriate equivalents for SL architectural terms. The comparison of Pope’s textbook and Ouliaienia’s translation demonstrated that they had made use of four of the strategies (i.e., Direct Transfer, Word for Word Translation, Interpretation, and Domestication). Accordingly, in pope’s book, Interpretation was the most frequently used strategy, while Direct Transfer was the most frequently utilized one in Ouliaienia. On the other hand, Word for Word Translation was the least frequently used strategy in Pope’s work, whereas Domestication was the least frequently utilized one in Ouliaienia’s work. The findings of the present study may have some significant implications for translation theory and practice. Keywords: Translation, CSIs, Persian Architecture, Terminology

Abstract:
Knowledge is a network of interconnected concepts. Yet, precisely how the topological structure of knowledge constrains its acquisition remains unknown, hampering the development of learning enhancement strategies. Here, we study the topological structure of semantic networks reflecting mathematical concepts and their relations in college-level linear algebra texts. We hypothesize that these networks will exhibit structural order, reflecting the logical sequence of topics that ensures accessibility. We find that the networks exhibit strong core–periphery architecture, where a dense core of concepts presented early is complemented with a sparse periphery presented evenly throughout the exposition; the latter is composed of many small modules each reflecting more narrow domains. Using tools from applied topology, we find that the expositional evolution of the semantic networks produces and subsequently fills knowledge gaps, and that the density of these gaps tracks negatively with community ratings of each textbook. Broadly, our study lays the groundwork for future efforts developing optimal design principles for textbook exposition and teaching in a classroom setting.

Abstract:
In this work, we extend Achi Brandt's notion of textbook multigrid efficiency (TME) to massively parallel algorithms. Using a finite element based geometric multigrid implementation, we recall the classical view on TME with experiments for scalar linear equations with constant and varying coefficients as well as linear systems with saddle-point structure. To extend the idea of TME to the parallel setting, we give a new characterization of a work unit (WU) in an architecture-aware fashion by taking into account performance modeling techniques. We illustrate our newly introduced parallel TME measure by large-scale computations, solving problems with up to 200 billion unknowns on a TOP-10 supercomputer.

Abstract:
Prague's main feature is that, out of many cultural treasures, it preserved its architectural culture and put it to practical use to present day. Particularly Prague has embraced a wealth of architectural styles from many ages. From the Romanesque, the Gothic culture of Czech's pinnacle age, Baroque, Neo Classicism, the Art Nouveau style buildings that concentrated in Prague at the end of 19th century and finally to modern structures. As we have studied, Prague is a textbook of historical styles: a Romanesque rotunda, a Gothic cathedral, a constellation of Baroque churches and palaces, a Renaissance summer palace, whole districts with histoicizing ‘neo-styles: neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance, neo-Baroque, neo-Classic,’ Art Nouveau cafes, unfunctional pebble-stone streets and as yet undigested, isolated postmodern structure such as ‘Dancing Building-Gunger and Fred Building’ by Frank O. Abstract:
This project outlines the design proposal for an alternative public high school in Toronto, Ontario. For this project the school is re-imagined as a Community Learning Centre. The goal of the Community Centre model is to foster life-long learning in young people which can occur when space emphasizes social interaction, citizenship, and life long learning. The design of the Community Learning Centre is an attempt to align educational priorities with design, to create learning environments that best suit the needs of the users. The focus of the project, is on places between the classrooms where there is opportunity for informal learning to take place. The term schoolscapes is use to describe these spaces. They include all of the places between classrooms and are a way of reimaging the corridors as active, lively and engaging spaces. To support and expand on the idea of schoolscapes, how the environment impacts people and learning, the shifting values in education, and how public space can be related to school interiors, have been investigated. The work of Prakash Nair, Annalise Gehling and Herman Hertzberger, on school design and its correlation to public space have been extremely influential for this project, as has the work of Jan Ghel on lively city spaces. Jan Ghel identifies key features of good public space that can provide the foundation for the design of informal learning spaces. The writing of Nair, Gehling and Hertzberger will be used to support how these characteristics can be applied to the learning environment. The design of the Community Learning Centre explores how the ideals imbedded in public space can be carried over to the interior of a learning environment.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the transformation of the society in the 19th and on the beginning of 20th century and its influence on changes of Prague architecture. Its goal is to find out, how this topic is covered in the Framework Educational Programme for Basic Education and how it is implemented in the history textbooks for Stage 1 of basic education (4th and 5th grades). Furthermore, this thesis examines the development of Prague and the transformation of the society during the period of interest with the intent to determine, how these changes manifested into civic buildings. First part of this work is devoted to a detailed analysis of the available educational documents. It follows, that this topic is not covered in the Stage 1 basic education history classes to the extent that would correspond to the importance of this period for the further development of the modern society. This part also summarizes the professional literature and information available on the transformation of the society and the changes in lives of the Prague citizens, regional development of the capital along with the overview of the architectural styles typical for this period. Second part of this thesis uses the gathered material as a foundation for the creation of the educational documents for the historical excursion...

Abstract:
AbstractLinear scar is a common problem in all fields of surgery as it leads to unpleasant appearance that is not socially acceptable. In particular, linear scars in the exposed areas such as face, neck, and upper extremities cause significant psychological disturbance to patients who need proper medical assistance to release their suffering. The author proposed tissue remodeling strategy on an existed linear scar using FMRT (fractional microplasma radiofrequency technology) to render gross view of a linear scar less visible or non-visible by changing the scar tissue architecture. Similar concept is also applied to the intervention of an early-stage wound to significantly alter the natural process of wound healing via FMRT-mediated change of the histological architecture of a wound, and thus to prevent the formation of a grossly visible linear scar. This chapter introduces the general background information, FMRT concept, and its application on linear scar treatment and prevention with the presentation of several typical cases.

AbstractThis chapter, Chaps. 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_3 and 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_4 present a self-contained introduction to the Standard Model of fundamental interactions, which describes in the unified framework of gauge quantum field theories all of the fundamental forces of nature but gravity: the strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions. This set of chapters thus provides both an introduction to the Standard Model, and to quantum field theory at an intermediate level. The union of the three chapters can be taken as a masters’ level course reference, and it requires as a prerequisite an elementary knowledge of quantum field theory, at the level of many introductory textbooks, such as Vol. 1 of Aitchison-Hey, or, at a somewhat more advanced level, Maggiore. The treatment is subdivided into three parts, each corresponding to an individual chapter, with more advanced field theory topics introduced along the way as needed. Specifically, this chapter presents the general structure of the Standard Model, its field content, and symmetry structure. This involves an introduction to non-abelian gauge theories both at the classical and quantum level. Also, it involves a discussion of spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Higgs mechanism, that play a crucial role in the architecture of the Standard Model, and their interplay with the quantization of gauge theories. Chapter 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_3 then presents the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. This requires introducing the concepts of CP violation and mixing, and of radiative corrections. Finally, Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-38207-0_4 presents the strong sector of the theory, which requires a more detailed treatment of renormalization and the renormalization group.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter briefly situates the rise of modern positive law as an affordance of a specific information and communication technology (ICT)—namely the printing press, which is better described as an information and communication infrastructure (ICI). One of the challenges that modern positive law faces is the transformation of the ICI from books and mass media to a digital and computational ICI. Cyberspace here refers to cyber (steering) and connects with cybernetics (remote control of one's environment by means of feedback loops). This highlights that the new ICI is fundamentally different from speech, writing, printing, and mass media. Cyberspace is not merely a digitized version of physical space, but refers to an architecture with two novel characteristics: its hyperconnectivity and its computational pre-emptions.

Augmented reality is a technology that has been growing every day, being used in various fields, such as architecture, games and medicine, and because of this growth, several applications of this resource arise. With this in mind, this project seeks to apply augmented reality in the classroom by the use of smartphones. Our intention is to show that a device that can hinder learning, can also helps a lot when applied in a favorable way to learning. Basically, with an easy-to-use mobile phone application, students will be able to see pictures from their textbook in three dimensions and animated, thus making learning more dynamic and playful. By not modifying the content of the textbook, the application can be used in several schools, requiring the application and the textbook for which it was developed.

Abstract:
This paper describes a modular 2-DOF serial robot manipulator and accompanying experiments that have been developed to introduce students to the fundamentals of robot control. The robot is designed to be safe and simple to use, and to have just enough complexity (in terms of nonlinear dynamics) that it can be used to showcase and compare the performance of a variety of textbook robot control techniques including computed torque feedforward control, inverse dynamics control, robust sliding-mode control, and adaptive control. These various motion control schemes can be easily implemented in joint space or operational space using a MATLAB/Simulink real-time interface. By adding a simple 2-DOF force sensor to the end-effector, the robot can also be used to showcase a variety of force control techniques including impedance control, admittance control, and hybrid force/position control. The 2-DOF robots can also be used in pairs to demonstrate control architectures for multi-arm coordination and master/slave teleoperation. This paper will describe the 2-DOF robot and control hardware/software, illustrate the spectrum of robot control methods that can be implemented, and show sample results from these experiments.
