Abstract:
The textbook is a practical learning tool for improving student writing skills; however, not all students learn from a textbook. For this reason, a lecturer must be able to design a textbook according to the needs of students. This paper describes developing and validating academic writing textbooks with a process genre approach in tertiary institutions. This research is part of the research development process, which consists of three phases: need assessment, design, and validation. Five experts were appointed to validate this academic writing textbook. Content Validity Index (CVI) is used to calculate the validity of textbooks quantitatively, with a score above 0.79 considered to meet the criteria. The validity test results state that the CVI of an academic writing textbook is 0.9, with a few revisions based on expert input and suggestions. These findings indicate that this textbook has good validity and reliability and can be used to write in college.

Abstract:
Textbook plays important role in teaching English. Yet, not all textbook is appropriately meet to the students’ needs and knowledge level. The material for EFL is totally different to Native speaker of English. One of the ways matching students’ needs and textbook is by doing textbook evaluation. This research is aimed at discussing textbooks that are used by the teacher in English Foreign Language (EFL). The textbooks that have been chosen are English for Everyday English for Hospitality Professionals by Lawrence, J. Zwier and Nigel Caplan (2007) and English for Work (2003) by Ian Badger. Both of them are ESP textbooks where they are taught in a foreign language class. The purpose of this research is to know how much Everyday English for Hospitality Professionals and English for Work textbook used in college meets the criteria of good EFL textbook. The research design is a descriptive-evaluative. The procedure of analyzing the data starts by analyzing the data based on EFL evaluation criteria, then finding out how much each items meet the criteria of good EFL textbook and concluding the result. The research result revealed that most parts of the textbooks are appropriately met to the students’ needs. Most of the material stated inside of the textbooks covered students’ knowledge level and relevant for the field of study. Keywords: evaluation, foreign learner class, textbooks

Abstract:
As open textbook initiatives are on the rise, a burgeoning literature has begun exploring student perceptions of openly licensed textbooks used in higher education. Most of this research has lacked consideration of potential differences in the perceptions of online and on-campus students and has failed to include a control group of students using traditional textbooks. Therefore, the authors employed a 2 x 2 design to directly compare perceptions of online students with on-campus students assigned either open or traditional textbooks. Students (N = 925) enrolled in multiple sections of psychology courses at a midsized R1 institution completed a survey on their perceptions of their particular book’s format and features, as well as strategies they typically employ to offset the cost of expensive course materials. The results revealed that online and on-campus students report disparate strategies for offsetting the high costs of textbooks, different preferences in textbook formats (print versus digital versus both) when cost is not a factor, and differences in their ratings of the importance of various textbook features. Moreover, the results indicate that the use of open textbooks may increase preference for free digital textbooks over paid printed textbooks. Based on these results, the authors suggest that campuses might consider providing customized support to different student populations as open textbook initiatives gain in popularity on university campuses. Additionally, they suggest that prior exposure to open textbooks may increase students’ willingness to use openly licensed materials in future courses. They recommend future research on this question, using a longitudinal within-subjects designs.

Abstract:
Textbooks used in schools affect the quality of mathematics learning in the country. Indonesian Ministry of Education (Kemendikbud) already lauched students’ and teachers’ textbook that are distributed nationally on 2013; however improvements are needed to revise the textbooks since there are concerns such as the difficulty level of problems contained in the textbooks. The main objective of this study is to compare non-routine problems contained in mathematics textbooks used in Indonesia and Singapore. This is a qualitative research with content analysis design. Researchers compare Singaporean and Indonesian mathematics textbook since Singapore got higher rank in mathematics based on PISA result in 2018. The topic in this study is limited to Pythagorean Theorem. The result of the research shows that Indonesia and Singapore has consecutively 22,1% and 11,3% non-routine problem. Another finding of this study was Singaporean mathematics textbook focused more on developing students’ fluency of solving problems, meanwhile Indonesian mathematics textbook focused more on students’ reasoning ability. The results and findings in this paper are expected to provide input in developing future mathematics textbooks.

Abstract:
The increase of international exchange in education triggers strong demand for learning English language skills in various academic disciplines among Chinese students, which brings up a wide implementation of EAP (English for academic purposes) learning in universities in China. However, the teaching and learning result do not seem to be as satisfactory. A key factor to the disappointing situation is the lack of suitable textbooks. Currently, most of the few domestically designed EAP textbooks only focus on the reading and writing and cannot meet the learners’ needs of overall (listening, speaking, reading and writing) development. The adoption of textbooks designed abroad was found unable to cater to the needs and language proficiency of the learners in China. There is an urgent need of constructing localized textbook for EAP learning in Chinese context. Previous frameworks on textbook design are mainly based on linguistic theories, which though offer theoretical support of language study from the perspective of learning subjects did not pay attention to the interconnection of factors within the learning environment. This paper proposes the application of eco-education theory to the design of a localized EAP textbook. It stresses the importance of the interrelations between textbook, editor, researcher, teacher and student during the process of designing a localized textbook so as to promote a healthy and sustainable development of EAP learning in Chinese context.

Abstract:
The bulk of previous research on students' perceptions of open educational resources have lacked a control group of students rating traditional textbooks. Moreover, few studies have examined differences in the perceptions of online students and those taking classes in the classroom. A 2 × 2 cross-sectional design was used in which 925 students, assigned either a traditional textbook or an open textbook in either an online or classroom environment, were recruited to complete an online survey. Students assigned open textbooks were almost twice as likely to report using their textbooks, they used them more frequently, and for more time per week overall. Students assigned open textbooks also perceived a greater degree of overlap between the textbook, lecture, and quiz material than did students assigned traditional textbooks. Finally, ratings of the open textbooks were significantly higher than ratings of the traditional textbooks overall and on 11 of 15 different dimensions. Few differences in the online and classroom students were detected, suggesting both groups experienced similar benefits of the open textbooks. These findings demonstrate that replacing traditional textbooks with open textbooks may help to offset some of the financial hardships students face while improving students' engagement and satisfaction with their assigned textbook.

Abstract:
Textbook evaluation is the process for ensuring that the right textbook is selected for use in the teaching and learning scenario. During educational reforms, such as the adoption of the Common European Framework of Reference for the ELT scenario, textbook evaluation should be a crucial part of the textbook selection process. In Malaysia, with the adoption of CEFR, new books such as the Super Minds and Get Smart, which are imported textbooks, have replaced locally produced books. The Year 6 KSSR (SK) English textbook is currently still in use but would be phased out in the near future as part of the CEFR reform. Since the introduction of the ‘global’ textbooks, there have been mixed concerns amongst teachers and researchers about the suitability of the imported textbooks. This study investigated the effectiveness and suitability of the currently-in-use KSSR Year 6 English (SK) textbook, which was locally produced. It looked at the perceptions of teachers on the general attributes of the textbook, such as syllabus and curriculum, the methodology, the book’s suitability to learners, as well as the learning-teaching content such as skills, grammar, vocabulary, exercises, and pronunciation, etc. Adopting a mixed method design, Nimehchisalem & Mukundan’s (2015) revised textbook evaluation checklist was used as the instrument for the quantitiative part, where twenty, Year 6 English teachers, from three primary schools in the Kulai district (in Johor) evaluated the textbook. For the qualitative part, five teachers were involved in semi-structured interviews. The findings showed that the teachers perceived the Year 6 KSSR English SK Textbook that is currently used in primary (SK) schools, as highly useful for the learners, in terms of both the general attributes as well as learning-teaching content. Our findings highlight that locally produced textbooks are better suited for our learners, and if imported ‘global’ textbooks replace the local ones, they should first be customized (custom textbooks) that would be infused with local cultures, etc, to be better suited to local learner needs.

Abstract:
This mixed-methods study evaluated quality, usage, and perceptions of open educational resources compared to traditionally published textbooks. Because textbooks and other related materials make up a significant portion of educational costs, open educational resources have been explored for potential cost savings at all levels of education. These resources use public domain or open-licensed materials as the content component of free eTextbooks or low-cost printed textbooks. This evaluation explores how teachers and students use textbook resources both in and out of the classroom and the degree to which the content and design of open textbooks compares in quality and value to traditional textbooks. Data came through evaluating the print media design and content quality of the books in a Utah pilot program, analyzing the actual textbook artifacts from students, and conducting teacher surveys and interviews. The data points to clear differences in quality and use between the two types of books. Although the open textbooks are generally a lower quality product than traditional publisher produced textbooks, they were used in unique ways. Teachers who participated in the open textbook development tended to value the book as a resource, leading us to conclude that the ability to customize open resources may be an important determinant of textbook use. However, it is also likely that textbooks have only a minor affect on academic outcomes compared to other more problematic pedagogical and educational policy issues. This evaluation points to the need for additional study on the impact these differences have on learning outcomes.

Weiss, Rachel. "Multimodal textbook design : analyzing the construction of the discourses of pharmacology." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/19034.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.
The aim of the research is to contribute to a pedagogy of Multiliteracies in the context of Health Sciences. A Multiliteracies approach sees text in terms of a process of 'redesigning' meaning from a range of available resources. These include multimodal semiotic resources such as visual and verbal modes, as well as particular discursive and social practices that the text draws upon. The study originates from a disagreement over which Pharmacology textbook fourth year medical students should use. The founding argument is that a Pharmacology textbook can be seen as constructing the discourses of the 'prescribing physician' As such, it simultaneously constructs and bears imprints of particular ideologies, discursive formations and social relations which are relevant in the field of medicine and science, as well as those from private and public life-worlds. As a teacher, I am interested in how the textbooks' ideologies contribute to or contest that of the new problem-based medical curriculum. I also analyze the respective designs in terms of their accessibility and suitability specifically for undergraduate medical students. The theoretical framework is provided by Fairclough's notion of 'orders of discourse' together with Halliday's metafunctional view of text, and is operationalized through a social semiotic analysis of sections of two textbooks. The textbooks analyzed are 'Pharmacology' by Rang et al ('Rang'), and 'the Oxford Textbook of Clinical Pharmacology and Drug therapy' ('Oxford'). I focus on the grammatical system of transitivity to construct the respective textbooks' views of social reality, and I use an analysis of modality in the texts to construct the social relations between writers, readers and the subject of Pharmacology. The analytical 'toolkit' includes verbal as well as visual semiotic resources within a framework of textual coherence. The study concludes that while Rang constructs social relations and identities that resonate with a contemporary society, its interest in Pharmacology is scientific rather than clinical. Furthermore, its design features may limit access specifically for undergraduate medical students. Oxford, on the other hand, is dominated by the discourses of clinical medicine and medical education. It constructs the subject of Pharmacology in terms of therapy or 'process', rather than in terms of drugs or 'products', and in this sense may be more suitable as a 'tutor'. However, it does not prepare the student for critical engagement with the changing social realities and relations of power in a post-Fordist society. The value of the study is two-fold. Firstly, it reiterates the importance of critical reflection on the various aspects of a curriculum. This includes reflection on alignment between the ideologies of textbooks and that of the new curriculum, and between curricular objectives, activities and assessment practices. Secondly, it has led to the operationalizing of a metalanguage of design, specifically in a Health Sciences context. This metalanguage may be used not l ' only for improving the communicative value of students' assignments, but also to expand their cultural perspectives through critical engagement with aspects of social identities and relations.

The printed textbook is used daily in schools around the world even with the emergence of the electronic textbook. That they remain despite research that anticipated his death. The designer is present in making textbooks, working with other agents, especially in creating an interface between the author and the reader. The designer becomes therefore a mediator agent and a catalyst in the reading of the production of sense of the book. In Colombia, the Rural Education Project (PER) developed educational content for the education of rural children to the media printed and digital textbooks. This dissertation seeks to analyze the graphic design used in both digital format and in print produced for the primary education sector. This is on the assumption that the interrelationship between the imagistic content is incompatible, the graphic designs adopted disregard the competence and skills of the child population of existing rural and demanded by the education segment essential to establish parameters for the inclusion of pictorial elements and to the interrelationship between these elements and the verbal content. This is on the assumption also that teachers, who should act as mediators and catalysts agents of reading, have not developed in their training, skills and expertise to understand the design as an interface between the content and the child. It is understood that the problems occur in both media, which compromises the teaching-learning and increases the gap between education in rural and urban area of Colombia. The aim is to contribute to the reduction of discrimination and exclusion of communities and gender of the countryside, from the reflection about the places of the graphic design in the textbook aimed at specific communities.

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with the insertion of the design(er) in the editorial production of the textbook – an instrument which is widely used in education in Brazil and, generally, acts as a foundation outlining the teaching practices applied in the classroom –, with a focus on the use of the geography textbook in elementary education. Among other issues, the question that guides this work can be summarized into the following: what is the role of design(er) in the textbook editing process? The collective construction process which the work goes through suffers interference from many different sources, making it much more difficult to define beforehand the roles and the limits imposed on the designer. However, it is possible to confirm the importance of the role of the designer in the production chain, being reasonable to assume that the designer even has a social role in this process. From this conjecture it is possible to delineate the path that leads to the issues facing this question. It is therefore an investigation – through a case study which examines the editorial production process – considering the role and the involvement of the agents present in the production chain (especially the designer), highlighting their functions, limits, and possible contributions. Finally, this observation allows us to examine the real and the idealized functions of the main participants in this process – such as the designer, one of the mediating reading agents –, taking into account the particularities of the production chain of textbook publishing, which is guided by a policy with precise objectives and educational and pecuniary interests.

Alhumaidan, Haifa. "Co-design of Augmented Reality textbook for children's collaborative learning experience in primary schools." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2017. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/32810.

Abstract:
Augmented Reality (AR) is a recent technology that allows a seamless composition between virtual objects and the real world. This practice-based research uses the affordances of AR to design an AR textbook for collaborative learning experience. It identifies the key concepts of children s AR textbooks for the designing and evaluation of collaborative learning experiences. These concepts were used to develop a conceptual framework for the AR textbook that considers collaborative experience, learning and usability. Informed by these concepts, the research also has identified the design features which are unique to AR affordances which can be integrated in the school textbooks to develop a collaborative AR textbook for primary school children. The research follows a participatory design approach to involve the users of the AR textbook in the design process. The researcher has conducted three co-design studies involving primary school children and adults using cooperative inquiry techniques. The first study uses low-tech prototyping to find the overall direction of designing the AR textbook. After the development of the first AR textbook prototype, two formative evaluations have been conducted using cooperative inquiry critiquing, and layered elaboration techniques. Throughout these studies, a conceptual framework has been developed namely, Experience, Learn and Use (ELU) for the designing and evaluation of children s AR textbooks for collaborative learning experience. This framework is based on the adaption of Janet Read s Play, Learn, Use (PLU) model that defines children s relationships with the interactive technologies. The research proposes the ELU framework as a useful classification framework in the evaluation process, which informs the design features of the AR textbook which are related to the concepts of collaborative experience, learning and usability. The practical component of the thesis proposes a sample of an AR textbook that is integrated in the regular school curriculum. It demonstrates the design features which can be implemented in other textbooks to support collaborative learning experiences for primary school children. The documentation of the co-design process provides a practical framework for co-designing an AR textbook with children, as well as an evidence of using the ELU framework in practice. 4 This research also contributes in bridging the gap between AR and Child-Computer Interaction (CCI) communities, through the use of common CCI methods in the AR development. This research has resulted in key design principles which contribute original knowledge to the literature of the AR for children s education considering the CCI perspective. These important principles are informed by the collaborative experiences, learning and usability aspects that establish a framework for the design and evaluation of collaborative AR textbook for children. The eight identified principles by this research are, Joint Textbooks, Personalised AR Experience, Interactive AR Book, Communication-Based Learning, Rewarding AR feedback, Audio AR Textbook, Intuitive AR Markers, and Mutual AR Display. The research introduces the definition for each of the concepts and a demonstration of the related design features in the outcome of the AR textbook prototype.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper describes an innovative assessment method that provides formative feedback on the effectiveness of an engineering textbook. We describe the development of the Text Learning Capture Method and the prior art that it is drawn from. We then go on to interpret and analyze the protocols captured with the method and describe the preliminary results generated with its application. Concrete examples of how the feedback enables us to identify the text’s readability, comprehensibility, and usability are given. From the analysis a list of questions was generated about how students learn from engineering textbooks. The textbook assessment work presented here was motivated by a desire on the part of the author of the textbook (hereafter the text-author in contrast to the authors of this paper) to understand more fully the role of this textbook in supporting student learning. We began with questions such as: “Do students relate to the real-world examples given?”; “How do students work through the equations?”; “How are figures utilized?”; “Are students excited by a textbook that uses a familiar multi-faceted artifact to demonstrate engineering principles?”. In our attempts to carefully answer these questions we generated questions such as: “Can learning from a text book be thought of as passive?”; “What constitutes effective learning from texts?”; “What are best reading practices?”; and “How much control does an author have over this?”.

Abstract:
Recent studies on textbook costs in the United States have indicated that there is a direct relationship between textbook costs and student success. With textbook costs increasing at a rate higher than the cost of living, many students have cited the textbook cost as an extremely important factor when obtaining (or not obtaining) a textbook. Open educational resources (OER) are tools that educators can use to supplement or build a course. OER are free for anyone to reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute and are a low-cost, tailored solution for faculty and students. There have been calls for research that demonstrates how OER are being put into practice. This case study examines the responses of users to a voluntary survey in a capstone business course that implemented OER in lieu of traditional textbooks. The study suggests that, for teachers and students, as well as self-directed learners, OER provide a valuable resource to eliminate the pay wall, improve learning design, and support the power of the community through sharing and collaboration.

Abstract:
Nowadays, we can observe that there is still not sufficient amount of textbooks in various areas of Education. One of these areas is also Environmental geography which is an important part of geography lessons at primary school. Therefore, our main intention in this contribution is to introduce design of the textbook for Environmental geography. Textbook that we have created introduces and solves environmental problems on global, regional and local level in a very detailed way. The aim of the textbook is to applicate all of the dimensions of environmental geography into each class at the second grade of primary schools in Slovakia. We have created didactic material which helps teachers during their teaching, as well as material interesting and engaging for students. The proposed textbook could be motivating because of many additional illustrations, various games and tasks using not only classical, but also modern didactic methods.

Abstract:
The 2015 Residential Energy Consumption Survey design called for stratification of primary sampling units to improve estimation. Two methods of defining strata from multiple stratification variables were proposed, leading to this investigation. All stratification methods use stratification variables available for the entire frame. We reviewed textbook guidance on the general principles and desirable properties of stratification variables and the assumptions on which the two methods were based. Using principal components combined with cluster analysis on the stratification variables to define strata focuses on relationships among stratification variables. Decision trees, regressions, and correlation approaches focus more on relationships between the stratification variables and prior outcome data, which may be available for just a sample of units. Using both principal components/cluster analysis and decision trees, we stratified primary sampling units for the 2009 Residential Energy Consumption Survey and compared the resulting strata.
