Abstract:
Neurosurgery is a rapidly developing and technically demanding branch of surgery that requires a detailed knowledge of the basic sciences and a thorough clinical approach. The Oxford Textbook of Neurological Surgery is an up-to-date, objective, and readable text that covers the full scope of neurosurgical practice. Each section takes a dual approach with ‘generic surgical management’ chapters that focus on specific clinical problems facing the neurosurgeon (e.g. sellar/suprasellar tumour, intradural spina tumours, and others) and ‘pathology-specific’ chapters (e.g. glioma, meningeal tumours, scoliosis and spinal deformity, aneurysm, and others). Where appropriate, this division provides the reader with easily accessible information for both clinical problems which present in a regional fashion and specific pathologies. The generic chapters cover aspects such as operative approaches, neuroanatomy, and nuances.

May, Robert, and Angela R. McLean, eds. Theoretical Ecology. Oxford University Press, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199209989.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Robert May's seminal book has played a central role in the development of ecological science. Originally published in 1976, this influential text has overseen the transition of ecology from an observational and descriptive subject to one with a solid conceptual core. Indeed, it is a testament to its influence that a great deal of the novel material presented in the earlier editions has now been incorporated into standard undergraduate textbooks. It is now a quarter of a century since the publication of the second edition, and a thorough revision is timely. Theoretical Ecology provides a succinct, up-to-date overview of the field set in the context of applications, thereby bridging the traditional division of theory and practice. It describes the recent advances in our understanding of how interacting populations of plants and animals change over time and space, in response to natural or human-created disturbance. In an integrated way, initial chapters give an account of the basic principles governing the structure, function, and temporal and spatial dynamics of populations and communities of plants and animals. Later chapters outline applications of these ideas to practical issues including fisheries, infectious diseases, tomorrow's food supplies, climate change, and conservation biology. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on questions which as yet remain unanswered. The editors have invited the top scientists in the field to collaborate with the next generation of theoretical ecologists. The result is an accessible, advanced textbook suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate level students as well as researchers in the fields of ecology, mathematical biology, environmental and resources management. It will also be of interest to the general reader seeking a better understanding of a range of global environmental problems.

Abstract:
Volume Abstract: In 2004 as in 1970 the Oxford University Press occupied a leading position among national and international publishers. Despite this seeming constancy the Press underwent significant changes, prompted by technological, economic, educational, and political developments in Britain and elsewhere. Part I considers the Press as a whole, beginning by examining the response to the 1970 Waldock Report, the business history of the Press—its structure, leadership, and finances, and its relationship with the University of Oxford. Case studies explore in detail the removal of the London Business to Oxford, the relocation of distribution facilities to Corby, and the closure of the Printing House. Subsequent chapters trace broader developments including OUP’s approach to sales and marketing, changes in book design, the impact of technological change, and the Press’s relationship with its staff and with the built environment in Oxford and around the world. Part II looks at the Press through its publications. These seven chapters each consider a part of the OUP list: academic titles, textbooks, and monographs; trade titles, including children’s books; schoolbooks; dictionaries and reference titles; journals; music, hymnals, and bibles; and poetry. Part III assesses the global outreach of the Press, examining OUP’s English-language teaching division and detail the operations and publications of its international branches. The volume describes the evolution of OUP—sometimes gradual, sometimes controversial—into a more streamlined and financially minded organization that nevertheless remained dedicated to its scholarly mission to provide excellent academic and educational resources for readers of all ages, nationalities, and interests.

Zack, Naomi, ed. The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy and Race. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190236953.001.0001.

Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy and Race provides up-to-date explanation and analyses by leading scholars of contemporary issues in philosophy of race and African American philosophy. Ideas about race held by Locke, Hume, Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche are supplemented by suppressed thought from the African diaspora, early twentieth-century African American perspectives, and Native American, Asian American, and Latin American views. Philosophical analysis is brought to bear on the status of racial divisions as human categories in the biological sciences, as well as within the architectonic of contemporary criticism and conceptual analysis. The special applications of American philosophy and continental philosophy to ideas of race are presented as methodological alternatives to more analytic approaches. As a collection of analyses and assessments of “race” in the real world, there is trenchant and relevant attention paid to historical and contemporary racism and what it means to say that “race” and racial identities are socially constructed. Analyses of contemporary social issues include the importance of racial difference and identity in education, public health, medicine, IQ and other standardized tests, and sports. Societal limitations and structures provided by public policy and law are realistically considered. As a critical theory, the study of race is compared to feminism. Historical and contemporary, as well as academic and popular, racisms pertaining to male and female gender receive special consideration. Although this comprehensive collection may have the effect of a textbook, each of the original essays is a fresh and authentic development of important present thought.
