Abstract:
Students’ critical reading skill is being decreasing, especially in learning history. In the other hand, students’ reading skill during learning history is important and has its significance to be developed. The indications can be seen from the ability on finding and comparing reading sources, analyzing readings, making notes from reading results, and sharing information from reading analysis results. Due to the significance of this research, author formulates some problems taken, those are: first, how to develop history learning using methods Search, solve, create, and share (SSCS). Second, how to implement the search, solve, create, and share methods (SSCS). Third, how to increase learning using the search, solve, create, and share methods (SSCS). Fourth, the efforts to overcome the obstacles arisen in the application of search, solve, create, and share (SSCS) method. This study aims to improve critical reading skills of student's history textbook during learning history. This study uses a classroom action research model with Kemmis and Taggart design consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. This study aspects of the textbook's Critical reading skills are selecting information from the historical textbook that corresponds to the discussion, finding information from the history textbooks, analyzing the content of the reading in the history textbooks, asking questions to the teacher or friends about the learning materials in the history textbooks, making notes based on the readings from the history textbook, sharing the work based on the reading results. Based on the results, this search, solve, create, and share (SSCS) may improve Students’ critical reading skill in history learning . This is indicated by the increase in the critical reading skill on textbook of the learning process in each cycle.

Abstract:
The research aimed to assess the readability of reading material in two different English textbooks published by different publishers. Many pieces of research have been conducted to examine the reading materials in English textbooks, and it had been discovered that the reading materials were insufficiently adequate for the levels of students. The research applied a descriptive content analysis method to analyze, interpret, and describe the data. The Flesch Reading Ease formula was as an instrument. The research’s data were derived from the English textbook “Pathway to English” by Erlangga grade X and the English textbook “Bahasa Inggris” by The Ministry of Education and Culture grade X. Based on the findings of the research, five reading texts out of 15 match with students’ level (fairly difficult level) of grade X in the first textbook, while three texts out of 13 equal with students’ level (fairly difficult level) of grade X in the second textbook. Furthermore, the first textbook’s average readability score indicates that the texts are ‘standard’, whereas the second textbook indicates that the texts are ‘fairly difficult’. Based on the study findings, some recommendations for teachers are to use the readability formulas to provide appropriate reading material for students, as well as for other researchers to conduct a larger context about readability.

Abstract:
This study investigated differences in university students’ academic reading comprehension performance, reading strategy use, and perception of the effects of two textbook mediums. Eighty-one students participated in this study. Two textbook formats, hard copies and soft copies of the same textbook were used. A mixed-method research design was used for data collection with paired sample t tests adopted to compare the reading comprehension of two textbooks versions in immediate learning and summative learning on the same group of students, and a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were employed to probe students’ perceptions. The results indicated that the participants performed no differently on the summative reading comprehension tests, but performed significantly better on immediate tests using the e-textbook. The questionnaire and the interviews showed that half of the respondents still preferred to use print compared to e-textbooks. This study concluded that e-textbooks were not yet positioned to replace print textbooks for university students in Taiwan. Nonetheless, pedagogically, since e-textbooks provide more interactive features than print, they should be considered an integral part of reading instruction.

Abstract:
Reading textbooks written in second or foreign language is considered more challenging than written in reader’s mother tongue. If the textbooks are written considering the level of the students, they read and comprehend the texts without extra effort. With this in mind, the study tries to explore the challenges faced by the bachelor level second year students while reading the textbook ‘Readings for the New Horizons’. The participants of this descriptive phenomenological study consisted of 15 students studying specialization English in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) second year. I employed purposive sampling to select the participants and unstructured interview to collect the data. The collected data was transcribed and thematized and findings of the study were presented and analyzed employing descriptive techniques of qualitative data analysis. The findings revealed that students consider unfamiliar words as the major challenge followed by length of the reading texts, less proficient in English, sentence structure, content included in the textbook, number of lessons or reading texts incorporated in the textbook and lack of reading habits. The teachers need to involve students in intensive reading to overcome the challenges and to develop the habit of reading texts written in second language.

Abstract:
In educational systems without comprehensive systems for regulating textbooks, teachers can exert considerable influence on the use of textbooks. However, existing research has not yet identified the mechanisms of this use. Accordingly, the aim of this article is to examine and explain teachers’ strategic use of textbooks. I administered a questionnaire to 313 Swedish teachers of years four to twelve (for pupils of ten to eighteen years of age). The results demonstrate a pathway between reading practices and strategic textbook use, mediated by textbook satisfaction. Pupils’ reading needs had a negative impact on strategic textbook use. Finally, teachers’ experience had a positive impact on reading practices but no effect on strategic textbook use.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to reveal the representation of the 21st-century skills in the reading tasks of junior high school English textbooks for grade VIII and compare the results of data between the textbook published by Erlangga publishing and the textbook published by the The Ministry of Education and Culture. The integration of the 21st-century skills in English textbook is important for students to deal with globalization. Using the descriptive qualitative method and content analysis, this research analyzed the representation of the 21st-century skills in reading tasks of Junior High School English textbooks “Bright an English” published by Erlangga and the textbook “When English Rings a Bells” published by The Ministry of Education and Culture for grade VIII for Junior High School based on the categories of 12 competencies from the framework for 21st-century learning. As a result, the researcher found that there were slightly different results from two English textbooks. Textbook 1 refers to the “Bright an English” textbook presents 9 skills. Meanwhile, textbook 2 refers to “When English Rings a Bells” textbook presents 8 skills which had fewer than textbook 1. The textbooks use the 2013 English curriculum materials. It also has fulfilled the criteria of a good textbook. This research definitively answers the question regarding the representation of 21st-century skills in the reading task of Junior High School English textbooks.

Abstract:
English textbooks, particularly for senior high school students, should provide competent English reading activities to help students improve their English skills by simultaneously training them in reading and vocabulary knowledge. The researcher aims to investigate the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in essay reading exercises distributed in the English SMK/MAK textbook for grades X, XI, and XII. The researcher selected the English textbook published by Bumi Aksara. This study was carried out using the qualitative method.. The data analysis method was sequentially started from textbook observation, question selection, data reduction, and finally the HOTS data analysis. According to the results, there are 6 HOTS reading essay questions (C4: 2, C5: 4) in the English textbook for X grade, 7 HOTS reading essay questions (C4: 5, C5: 2) in the English textbook for XI grade, and 12 HOTS reading essay questions (C5: 12) in the English textbook for XII grade. It can be concluded from the findings that HOTS reading essay questions are distributed less than LOTS. These results may suggest to English teachers to be selective in utilizing English textbooks to improve student's critical thinking and for the further researcher to investigate HOTS effects on students’ achievement.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to develop a digital reading textbook for advanced Korean learners. While research on textbooks for Korean language learners is being carried out steadily, most of the textbooks were published for intermediate and advanced levels published are integrated textbooks mainly used by language education institutes, textbooks for academic learners, and test books for preparing for TOPIK(Test of Proficiency in Korean) etc. However, there is a shortage of advanced textbooks for general purpose learners who are constantly learning Korean with interest in the Korean language and Korean culture. In particular, development of digital textbooks for the digital generation who are familiar with digital devices has not achieved much in terms of research achievements compared to the necessity. Digital textbooks are equipped with various learning materials, which further arouse learners’ interest, enable them to learn self-directedly, and facilitate the supply and demand of textbooks overseas. In this study, the development of reading materials containing various topics was suggested to improve learners’ reading ability. In particular, considering the characteristics of learners of the digital generation, I intend to develop digital textbooks that are easy to access even abroad. The content was based on a travel destination that learners may be interested in, and a theme-based textbook was developed by connecting it with reading texts on unfamiliar topics. In addition, reading strategies are included in the textbook to improve the reading skills of learners by learning reading strategies. In this study, a digital textbook was developed using a reading strategy, and it is expected that the discussion on digital textbooks will become more active in the future.

Abstract:
Abstract. The reading comprehension question level in textbook is crucial because it provides teachers with a base on what to use in the teaching learning process. This study is concerned with evaluating and contrasting the distribution of question levels in reading comprehensions in two EFL textbooks used in Indonesian secondary schools: English for Nusantara for grade VI (hereinafter referred to textbook 1) and When English Rings A Bell for grade VI (hereinafter referred to textbook 2). Both were published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, although for different curriculums. This study focused on assessing Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in reading passages using the revised Bloom's taxonomy. This study was designed using the descriptive qualitative approach and data was collected using a checklist table. The data were collected and evaluated to determine the percentages and frequencies associated with each level of thinking skills for the questions. The results showed that in both textbooks, LOTS were more prevalent than HOTS. In textbook 1, the percentage of LOTS is 79%, and in textbook 2, the percentage is 84%, whereas the percentage of HOTS is 21% in textbook 1 and 16% in textbook 2. Furthermore, memorizing (C1) is the most common question in both textbooks, accounting for 62% in textbook 1 and 78% in textbook 2. The findings highlight the need for curriculum developers and educators to reevaluate the complexity and cognitive demands of reading comprehension questions in English textbooks. By fostering higher-order thinking skills through more challenging and diverse questions, students can better prepare for real-world language use and critical analysis. As results, this study underlines the importance of aligning educational materials with the goals of developing students' critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are essential for their academic and future professional success. Keywords: Thinking questions, coursebook evalaution, reading questions

Hebbard, Aaron Brent. "Reading Daniel as a theological hermeneutics textbook." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2005. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1538/.

Full text
Abstract:
Reading Daniel as a Theological Hermeneutics Textbook is a thesis that sets out to read the book of Daniel as a narrative textbook in the field of theological hermeneutics. Employing such disciplines as historical criticism, literary criticism, narrative theology and hermeneutics, this thesis seeks to maintain an interdisciplinary critical outlook on the book of Daniel. Two particular perspectives come to light in this reading of Daniel, both of which are inherently linked to one another. Firstly, is the perception that the character of Daniel is the paradigm of the good theological hermeneut; theology and hermeneutics are inseparable and converge in the character of Daniel. The reader must recognize in Daniel certain qualities, attitudes, abilities and convictions well worth emulating. Essentially, the reader must aspire to become a ‘Daniel’. Secondly, is the standpoint that the book of Daniel on the whole should be read as a hermeneutics textbook. The reader is led through a series of theories and exercises that are meant to be instilled into his/her theological, intellectual and practical life. Attention to the reader is a constant endeavor throughout this thesis. The concern is primarily with the contemporary reader and his/her community, yet with sensible consideration given to the historical readerly community with which the contemporary reader finds continuity. Greater attention on what the book of Daniel means for the contemporary reader is given than on what the book of Daniel meant in its historical setting. Yet, we must be sensitive to the ‘historical’ reasons (theirs and ours) that demand the acquisition of finely tuned hermeneutic skill. In the end the reader is left with difficult challenges, a sobering awareness of the volatility of the business of hermeneutics, and serious implications for the reader to implement both theologically and hermeneutically.

Abdella, Ali Suleman. "An analysis of the Eritrean grade 9 biology textbook." University of the Western Cape, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6594.

Abstract:
Magister Philosophiae - MPhil<br>Teachers, during various seminars, workshops and departmental meetings, continuously complained about the inadequacy of the grade 9 biology textbook used in the Eritrean secondary schools. Among others, the teachers concerns has provided a necessary stimulus for embarking on this research which sought to determine the role, quality readability and relevance of the Eritrean grade 9 biology textbook, based on the teachers' and students' perceptions. Interviews, questionnaires, Cloze test and Word Difficulty Index were used to collect the data. The interview and questionnaires provided information on how the textbook was being used by both teachers and students. In addition they provided information about quality of the textbook and its relevance to the daily life experiences of the students. Moreover, Cloze test and Word Difficulty Index provided information on the readability of the textbook. The finding of this study reveals that both teachers and students use the textbook as the major source of information. Also, the factors that determine quality of the textbook were found to be poor except the physical features and organisation. With respect to relevance, very limited attempts were made to link biology to the daily life experiences of the students. The Cloze test and Word Difficulty Index show that the students clearly experience difficulty in understanding what they have read. In conclusion, this study makes some recommendation to writers on how to improve the quality of the textbook. The results obtained in this study are by no means exhaustive. Finally, areas warranting further investigation are suggested.

Abstract:
This research is included in the investigation about efficaciousness schools. It uses longitudinal survey data from the GERES Project: School Generation Research 2005. The part of the sub-sample studied corresponds to 3454 students from the first year of the primary education (or its equivalent) and its respective teachers of 176 classes, from 68 private, municipal or federal schools in Rio de Janeiro. Moving through quantitative and qualitative approaches, the added value in reading by the teachers to the classes is measured, described and interpreted, specially related to the use of Portuguese textbooks. Through in depth study of this theme, the conceptions about Brazil alphabetization that have appeared in previous decades and have considered the characteristics of the Textbooks National Program (PNLD) and the appropriation of these politics by the teachers are articulated. The literacy referred to the scholar efficaciousness and the research into this specific theme are the basis for the data analysis and its conclusions. In the qualitative approach a proficiency scale was built and, when it is interpreted, results in a description of seven learning levels, proving its inherent significance of the scale to teaching. The reading results reached by the students are presented, considering the administrative dependences that they are linked to. The students mobility is presented within the learning levels according to whether they used or didn´t use textbooks. In the quantitative approach, a linear regression model was implanted, which investigated the effect of the use of textbooks, how much experience the teacher had with that book and what PNLD says about the same book. The study verified that there was a significant increase in the learning average of the students that participated in the research. This contradicted a recurrent hipothesis in the educational area that suggested that the failure in the beginning levels of the primary education has origin in the alphabetization process. Among the results, stands out that there was more added value by the students that used the textbook and much more benefits to the students whose teachers had more than two years experience with the same book. In terms of public politics, this dissertation suggests that the textbook evaluation - and, in a more general form, the educational programs - considers the effect on the learning too.

In this investigation the science textbook was read orally through 12 weeks of our 7th grade science curriculum. Formative assessments were given throughout this period after each section of a chapter was read. Pre and post tests were given before and after each chapter. The next 12 weeks followed the same pattern except for the fact that the students read the textbook silently. Students' surveys were given at the beginning of the school year, after the 12 weeks of reading orally, and again after the 12 weeks of reading silently. Silent reading showed better results in both the formative and summative assessments. The survey showed that students don't particularly enjoy reading orally, but they feel it improves their learning.

Abstract:
In the light of Swedish pupils' declining understanding of non-fiction, as well as the abolition of textbook examination, the idea for this study was born. The purpose was to explore two reading comprehension textbooks in the subject of Swedish and compare them to PIRLS reading test from 2011. Furthermore, the overall aim has been to analyze the coherence between them (alignment). The study was focused on highlighting the similarities and differences among the texts and tasks provided in the materials. With particular focus on the text's prose, genre and format, as well as on the reading comprehension strategies that were practiced and tested in the tasks. Through text analysis, theories of alignment (Biggs, 2003) and reading comprehension strategies (Andreassen 2008; Reichenberg 2014; Westlund 2015) the following questions were answered: Which similarities and differences regarding the text's prose form, genre and design can be discerned in the two textbooks compared to PIRLS reading test?  Which similarities and differences exist between the reading comprehension strategies that are practiced in the textbooks' tasks compared to those tested in PIRLS reading test?  Which preconditions are given the pupils to perform at PIRLS through the work of these two reading comprehension textbooks? The results showed both similarities and differences among all of the materials. The distribution of the text's prose form differed. In one textbook the most common form was fictional prose, whereas in the other book non-fiction occurred more. However the distribution was even in PIRLS reading test. Results also revealed that the extent of the texts was significantly longer in the reading test than in either one of the textbooks. Additionally the results indicated that the tasks, in PIRLS and in the textbooks, require a use of different reading comprehension strategies. In the textbooks multiple strategies were needed to solve the tasks, in contrast to PIRLS, where there were no use of several of them. These findings suggest a lack of alignment between the analyzed materials.

Abstract:
Abstract. In order to help people better understand the culture of the Republic of China (ROC), experience the cultural connotation of ROC, and facilitate the research by researchers and the inheritance of ROC culture, this article proposes a ROC textbook retrieval system. The system is mainly divided into four modules: login and registration, book retrieval, online reading, and document downloading. We summarized and classified existing ROC textbooks, and converted them into electronic materials by scanning to build a database of ROC textbooks. According to the characteristics of textbooks, a fast retrieval algorithm is proposed to provide users with book search, online reading and other functions on the client interface, enabling users to search and read ROC textbooks online at all times and places through electronic devices, accumulating cultural literacy. Users can also download books and documents according to their own needs.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper describes an innovative assessment method that provides formative feedback on the effectiveness of an engineering textbook. We describe the development of the Text Learning Capture Method and the prior art that it is drawn from. We then go on to interpret and analyze the protocols captured with the method and describe the preliminary results generated with its application. Concrete examples of how the feedback enables us to identify the text’s readability, comprehensibility, and usability are given. From the analysis a list of questions was generated about how students learn from engineering textbooks. The textbook assessment work presented here was motivated by a desire on the part of the author of the textbook (hereafter the text-author in contrast to the authors of this paper) to understand more fully the role of this textbook in supporting student learning. We began with questions such as: “Do students relate to the real-world examples given?”; “How do students work through the equations?”; “How are figures utilized?”; “Are students excited by a textbook that uses a familiar multi-faceted artifact to demonstrate engineering principles?”. In our attempts to carefully answer these questions we generated questions such as: “Can learning from a text book be thought of as passive?”; “What constitutes effective learning from texts?”; “What are best reading practices?”; and “How much control does an author have over this?”.

Abstract:
This research deals with students’ abilities to read chemistry textbook images about dispersed systems. Secondary school students were included as the research participants, and their abilities to propose the titles of the realistic, conventional, and hybrid textbook images about dispersed systems, were analyzed. Additionally, their written interpretations about images contents were also analyzed. The collected data provided information about students’ misunderstandings about dispersed systems. These misunderstandings, some of which are the original outcome of this research, provided the significant results. In addition, it was found that students had the most difficulties with reading realistic textbook images. Namely, they relied on what they literally saw on the realistic image (i.e. photography) without providing proper connection with chemical contents about dispersed systems. Keywords: visual representations, reading images, images types, general chemistry.

Abstract:
Visual representation is one of the key structural elements of a textbook. A historical map is a graphic representation of the geographical area where historical events took place at a certain time. The subject of this research is the analysis of the use of a historical map in the Science and Social Studies textbooks for the fourth grade of primary school. In this paper, we have analyzed whether these textbooks contain historical maps, their number, whether they are titled, whether there are additional explanations or legends, and to what extent a historical map is referred to by the accounts in the text of the textbooks, on the basis of which students should, by independently interpreting, analyzing and reading the map, come to certain conclusions and knowledge. The method used is the content analysis method. The analysis indicates that all five textbooks contain historical maps, although they are not explicitly mentioned as a term in teaching and learning programs. Historical maps should enable students to acquire more permanent knowledge through independent work and map reading as well as develop new concepts with regard to historical content. Studying the use of historical maps in the Science and Social Studies textbooks is important for improving the teaching process.

Oza, Shardul, and Jacobus Cilliers. What Did Children Do During School Closures? Insights from a Parent Survey in Tanzania. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-ri_2021/027.

Full text
Abstract:
In this Insight Note, we report results of a phone survey that the RISE Tanzania Research team conducted with 2,240 parents (or alternate primary care-givers) of primary school children following the school closures in Tanzania. After the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Tanzania on 16 March 2020, the government ordered all primary schools closed the following day. Schools remained closed until 29 June 2020. Policymakers and other education stakeholders were concerned that the closures would lead to significant learning loss if children did not receive educational support or engagement at home. To help stem learning loss, the government promoted radio, TV, and internet-based learning content to parents of school-age children. The primary aims of the survey were to understand how children and families responded to the school closures, the education related activities they engaged in, and their strategies to send children back to school. The survey also measures households’ engagement with remote learning content over the period of school closures. We supplement the findings of the parent survey with insights from interviews with Ward Education Officers about their activities during the school closures. The survey sample is comprised of primary care-givers (in most cases, parents) of students enrolled in Grades 3 and 4 during the 2020 school year. The survey builds on an existing panel of students assessed in 2019 and 2020 in a nationally representative sample of schools.4 The parent surveys were conducted using Computer Assisted Telephonic Interviewing (CATI) over a two-week period in early September 2020, roughly two months after the re-opening of primary schools. We report the following key findings from this survey: *Almost all (more than 99 percent) of children in our sample were back in school two months after schools re-opened. The vast majority of parents believed it was either safe or extremely safe for their children to return to school. *Only 6 percent of households reported that their children listened to radio lessons during the school closures; and a similar fraction (5.5 percent) tuned into TV lessons over the same period. Less than 1 percent of those surveyed accessed educational programmes on the internet. Households with access to radio or TV reported higher usage. *Approximately 1 in 3 (36 percent) children worked on the family farm during the closures, with most children working either 2 or 3 days a week. Male children were 6.2 percentage points likelier to work on the family farm than female children. *Households have limited access to education materials for their child. While more than 9 out of 10 households have an exercise book, far fewer had access to textbooks (35 percent) or own reading books (31 percent). *One in four parents (24 percent) read a book to their child in the last week.
