Abstract:
Textbooks occurring in diverse social settings points to the need to make textbook evaluation in its social context. Many researchers have highlighted the significance of evaluating textbooks in local practices. The present study aims at exploring the suitability of a listening textbook--- A Listening Course(I) published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press in terms of content analysis. The analysis of the textbook finds that the general organization of the book, text types, listening tasks and activities are mostly suitable for first-grade English majors, but it still needs improvement on theme interests, authenticity, task options and assessment. Although ALC is a localized textbook, it still mirrors the macrocosm of English language teaching. The findings of this study will shed light on developing listening materials for textbook developers in order to avoid some pitfalls, and enlighten teachers on selecting suitable listening textbooks.

Abstract This article presents the results of analysis of Czech and Russian textbooks intended for organic chemistry teaching at upper secondary schools. In principle, the estimation of textbook didactic capacity is based on decomposition of the textbook content into a set of different objects and their subsequent frequency analysis. In this study, three Czech textbooks and three Russian textbooks were characterized by particular and total didactic capacity coefficients. The indifference of the calculated didactic capacities was tested by chi-square statistics at a level of significance α = 0.05. The results show that the selected Czech and Russian textbooks are not significantly different.

Abstract:
Textbook materials continue to play an important role in foreign language teaching and learning classroom. Textbooks are significant because these materials are considered elements in the field of foreign language learning. Teachers are often engaged in the application of textbooks for common teaching goals. Although the significance of the application of textbooks is accepted, ideas on whether textbooks could assist or hinder the teaching–learning process seem polarizing. This study employed a Likert scale survey to collect data on the evaluation of Japanese for busy people I: Romanized version (3rd Edition), a Japanese language textbook for new learners. The survey checklist yielded a highly unusual result, that is, all the participants advocated the use of the textbook. This study was conducted in the Greater Boston region in Massachusetts, MA, USA. Upon investigation, over 30 language learning centers, nearly 20 postsecondary institutions, and above 20 secondary schools were determined to be offering Japanese language courses. A total of 49 participants responded to the survey. None of the participants provided negative comments about the textbook. In addition, over 90% of the participants believed that the textbook materials and exercises were organized, contemporary, and applicable.

Teaching and learning process can not be separated from textbooks that play an important role as a reference for teachers and students. A good textbook must be representative of the curriculum that applies both the material and teaching methods so that learning objectives are achieved. Arabic textbooks in the 2013 curriculum use a scientific approach, but grammar material has not been explained in detail so that it affects students' competence to improve language skills. So the researcher developed a book for grammar material based on a scientific approach to improve writing skills. This study aims to develop books based on a scientific approach and determine the effectiveness of the books developed. The results obtained from this study are that the books developed have scored between 80-100% which means very good and can be used in learning without any improvement. Abstract:
The significance of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) has led many educational stakeholders to include the skill in educational curriculum and more specifically in the subjects that students learn. In the context of learning English, HOTS should be instilled in four language skills, especially reading skill. This skill is vital since students are demanded to be critical of what they read. Therefore, this research aimed at investigating how the reading comprehension questions in English textbooks for three different grades (X, XI, and XII) published by the Ministry of Education and Culture facilitate HOTS. By employing cognitive level of Bloom’s revised taxonomy (2001) and critical thinking task type of Numrich’s sequence (Beaumont, 2010), the questions are analyzed qualitatively. The results reveal that HOTS are realized adequately in the textbook for grade XI. In the textbooks for grade X and XII, HOTS are found in small quantity. Besides, based on Numrich’s sequence, the majority of the questions focus on the text which means that critical thinking-based questions are found in small number. Thus, it is expected that this result assists teachers, textbook writers, and future researchers to engage more on the implementation of HOTS.

Abstract:
Research shows that the textbook plays an important role in science education. However, textbooks has been criticized because of the poor descriptions of the interaction between the human circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems. This study shows how the relationship between the circulatory system, respiratory and digestive system is described in primary school science textbooks in both texts and images. Five teachers have been interviewed to examine how they use the texts and the images from the textbooks in the classroom. Analyzes of the textbooks show that the interaction between the circulatory system and the digestive system is clearly described in texts though there is a lack of illustrative images. The interaction between the circulatory system and the respiration is clear in both images and text. The interviews showed that the use of science textbooks is scarce in primary school year 4-6.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to examine how secondary teachers in the subject of history are using the textbook in their teaching. Four questions are being dealt with in this thesis. What importance is being placed on the use of history textbooks by the secondary teachers? What priorities do the secondary teachers have? How do they deal with student interests? And what is the importance of the secondary teachers’ work experience?

I have interviewed four secondary teachers with different work experience to complete this thesis. A Dictaphone has been used in all the interviews.

Research has shown that textbooks now have a central role in teaching and the lack of alternative materials and reduction of teaching hours has made it difficult to replace.

The main conclusions of the thesis are that the history textbook has a dual role depending on the teacher you ask, and that the history book is used differently by the teachers. The priorities vary depending on the students that are currently enrolled and their interests are. Teachers with less work experience have a rather negative attitude to the textbook and believe that it can be rigid, while teachers with more experience see it as a tool for engaging the weaker students. However, the history textbook is required, and even the teachers who are not using the history textbook can all confirm that: because even a teacher who is not using it has the history textbook for the students to have something to refer to if needed.

Grade 1-9’s implementation of “Arts and Humanities” learning domain curriculum, though conforms to the modern art education tendency and responded to the demand of changing era, but under hasty impetus, is there adequate time to compile with the verification the teaching material? Do compilation and verification personnel share same point of view with regard to the understanding of design education and the content of design teaching material? Does design education have the quality and depth to blend into the heart of visual art curriculum. Therefore, based upon grade 1-9’s “Arts and Humanities” textbook, the proportion and significance of design education content accounted for by “Visual-Art”, this research attempts to understand the extent of realization of design education. The first stage carries on grade 1-9’s curriculum implementation up until today’s collection and analysis of “Arts and Humanities” textbooks. The second stage, with focus on “Design” and “Pure-Art”, proposes operational definition and further classification. The third stage statistically analyses the proportion that design education accounts for and the significance it represents, as well as a comparison with past fine arts curriculum. This research finding shows that although the existence of design curriculum is not represented by “Visual-Art” curricular titles, but based upon inspection of the content, the content of design education curriculum does exist. Through statistical analysis it was unexpectedly discovered that design teaching material did not increase following educational reform, rather it is inferior to the arts curriculum before grade 1-9’s implementation. This provokes people to question, under such degree of realization inferior to former situation, whether we are truly facing up to the design education’s value of existence.

Ushiro, Shin, Antonio Ragusa, and Riccardo Tartaglia. "Lessons Learned from the Japan Obstetric Compensation System for Cerebral Palsy: A Novel System of Data Aggregation, Investigation, Amelioration, and No-Fault Compensation." In Textbook of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management. Springer International Publishing, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-59403-9_33.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractCerebral palsy is a pathological condition whose prevention and treatment have been immensely studied by experts in perinatal medicine and pediatric neurology. Despite this, it is still one of the main concerns nowadays in many countries, not only for scientific reasons but for legal ones also. For instance, in Japan, an increase in lawsuits relating to cerebral palsy was observed more than a decade ago, after healthcare resources in perinatal medicine had increasingly shrunk and had become fragile under the growing burden for physicians and midwives to provide advanced treatment, emergent care, high-risk treatment, and so on. Young physicians did not specialize in obstetrics because of the increased burden, which gave rise to a vicious cycle of shrinking resources in perinatal medicine. To address this issue, the Japan Obstetric Compensation System for Cerebral Palsy (JOCS-CP) was urgently introduced in 2009 to investigate, develop preventive measures, and award monetary compensation on a no-fault basis, with the Japan Council for Quality Health Care (JQ) as its operating organization (Fig. 33.1). It has so far produced annual reports on the prevention of cerebral palsy for nine consecutive years including numerical data and specific themes relating to the occurrence and prevention of cerebral palsy. The success of the system is a good reference for responding to adverse events which may happen in and have a vast impact on perinatal care. Therefore, this chapter focuses on cerebral palsy with primary reference to materials published by the JOCS-CP in the field of perinatal medicine. The aim of this chapter is to learn about the issues mentioned above and to discuss the significance and impact of introducing a nationwide system like the JOCS-CP. It describes knowledge and idea to questions of “Why cerebral palsy is highlighted among adverse event in obstetrics?”, “How the no-fault compensation/investigation/prevention system could be introduced?”, “What has been achieved by the system?”, and “How cerebral palsy is prevented?”.

AbstractPrevious studies have shown that diagram use is effective in mathematical word problem solving. However, they have also revealed that students manifest many problems in using diagrams for such purposes. A possible reason is an inadequacy in students’ understanding of variations in types of problems and the corresponding kinds of diagrams appropriate to use. In the present study, a preliminary investigation was undertaken of how such correspondences between problem types and kinds of diagrams are represented in textbooks. One government-approved textbook series for elementary school level in Japan was examined for the types of mathematical word problems, and the kinds of diagrams presented with those problems. The analyses revealed significant differences in association between kinds of diagrams and types of problems. More concrete diagrams were included with problems involving change, combination, variation, and visualization of quantities; while number lines were more often used with comparison and variation problems. Tables and graphs corresponded to problems requiring organization of quantities; and more concrete diagrams and graphs to problems involving quantity visualization. These findings are considered in relation to the crucial role of textbooks and other teaching materials in facilitating strategy knowledge acquisition in students.

Full text
Abstract:
To advance the state of the art of engineering design, we introduce a new concept on the “robustness” of a structure by measuring its ability to sustain a sudden loss of a part without causing an immediate collapse. The concept is based on the premise that most structures have built-in redundancy such that when the loss of a single part leads to a load redistribution, the “crippled” structure tends to seek a new stability configuration without immediate collapse. This property of a “robust” structure, when coupled with a continuous or periodic inspection program using nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, is useful in failure prevention, because such structure is expected to display “measurable” signs of “weakening” long before the onset of catastrophic failure. To quantify this “robustness” concept, we use a large number of simulations to develop a metric to be named the “Robustness Index (RBI).” To illustrate its application, we present two examples: (1) the design of a simple square grillage in support of a water tank, and (2) a classroom model of a 3-span double-Pratt-truss bridge. The first example is a “toy” problem, which turned out to be a good vehicle to test the feasibility of the RBI concept. The second example is taken from a textbook in bridge design (Tall, L., Structural Steel Bridge, 2nd ed., page 99, Fig. 4.3(b), Ronald Press, New York NY, 1974). It is not a case study for failure analysis, but a useful classroom exercise in an engineering design course. Significance and limitations of this new approach to catastrophic failure avoidance through “robust” design, are discussed.

Abstract:
This research deals with students’ abilities to read chemistry textbook images about dispersed systems. Secondary school students were included as the research participants, and their abilities to propose the titles of the realistic, conventional, and hybrid textbook images about dispersed systems, were analyzed. Additionally, their written interpretations about images contents were also analyzed. The collected data provided information about students’ misunderstandings about dispersed systems. These misunderstandings, some of which are the original outcome of this research, provided the significant results. In addition, it was found that students had the most difficulties with reading realistic textbook images. Namely, they relied on what they literally saw on the realistic image (i.e. photography) without providing proper connection with chemical contents about dispersed systems. Keywords: visual representations, reading images, images types, general chemistry.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of an experimental study to investigate and evaluate the effectiveness of utilizing computer-assisted instruction (CAI) as a stand-alone educational tool to teach computer-aided drafting (CAD) in engineering and technology programs. While the literature is rich with research in the field of evaluating CAI as a supplementary educational tool [11], a very limited number of publications dealt with evaluating CAI as a stand-alone system [7, 16, 9]. Also, none of the published studies focused on engineering or engineering technology education utilizing CAD systems. In this way, the present study serves as benchmark in devising a system to evaluate the effectiveness of CAI modules as a stand-alone instructional tool in engineering and technology education. In the present study, the students’ cognitive performance was measured in an entry-level CAD course. The participating students were divided into two groups: 1) the Primary Experimental group, which received only the CAI module as their sole source of instruction. This group was strictly involved in self-learning, self-paced instruction with minimum interaction with the instructors or lab assistants during the length of the study. 2) The Control group, which received only conventional instruction (lectures, handouts, textbook, and lab workbook) with all the necessary support from the instructors and lab assistants. A pilot study was conducted to pre-test the measuring instrument and the grading procedures as well as the methodology of assigning the students into groups. It was concluded one semester prior to the start of the main experiment. The main study was conducted over a period of three regular semesters with a new set of two groups of students selected for each semester. At the end of each experiment, the students were given a test (the measuring instrument) that was identical for both groups. The test results were tabulated and analyzed statistically. Statistical analysis of the data collected indicated that the group of students who received conventional instruction performed better than those receiving only computer-assisted instruction (CAI). Since several factors could have contributed to these findings, a major significance of the current study is that it demonstrates the necessity to conduct similar studies at different institutions in order to evaluate the effectiveness of CAI technology as it becomes more prevalent in engineering education programs [13].

Abstract:
This paper is an assessment of the topical coverage of current Managing Information Systems (MIS) textbooks. The MIS course is normally required of all undergraduate and graduate business majors , and therefore is their primary education in the use of IS/IT in the modern technology-oriented organization. However, the MIS textbooks researched do not attempt IS/IT management fluency. They do not even fully answer the questions normally asked by management and users during the justification and implementation of modern technology-oriented enterprise applications. The primary author has been teaching IS/IT courses for IS professionals and for users and managers for almost fifty tears. What has changed since that time? Not as much as should have happened in the education of line and staff personnel who work in organizations with critically important IS/IT enterprise applications. Early courses for users and managers were remarkably similar to our current MIS courses. This paper, therefore, suggests a significant change in content of MIS texts from primarily encompassing technology sections covering personal productivity applications, systems development methods, and infrastructure to presenting much more detail on user and management topics including modern enterprise level applications (e.g. transaction processing systems), privacy and security, feasibility studies, and the justification of IS/IT systems.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents a partial decoupling method for the well-known matrix method commonly in use for the linear inverse dynamics problem of planar mechanisms. Any mechanism with a dyad of binary links can benefit from the proposed method, which involves extracting submatrices by looking for sufficient columns of zeros such that a reduced problem may first be solved with an equal number of scalar equations and unknowns. Then some equal-and-opposite internal joint forces are transferred to the remaining FBDs and the solution proceeds until the input link is solved in a decoupled manner. The method leads to significant reductions in computational cost for common planar mechanisms. The kinematics & dynamics textbooks have overlooked this partial decoupling in their presentations of the matrix method for inverse dynamics.

Abstract:
In recent years many publishing companies have provided optional computer software for engineering textbooks. Some of these software packages are tools for enhancing classroom instruction and others are capable of engineering analysis. Several software are currently available as an option with most engineering thermodynamics. They can be used for thermodynamic property evaluations and are extremely useful tools in analysis and design in introductory courses. They are also useful in teaching fundamental thermodynamic concepts. The most significant advantage of these software programs is that no prior knowledge of programming language is necessary in their applications. This paper will discuss the benefits associated with the use of computer software in introductory thermodynamics courses. Available software tools are compared and, in each case, their strengths and limitations are highlighted. The paper describes how one software tool has been integrated into our introductory thermodynamics course to teach the fundamental concepts. Several examples are provided.

In ASME 2016 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
The importance of physiotherapy is becoming more significant with the increasing number of countries with aging populations. Thus, the education of physiotherapists is a crucial concern in many countries. Information and communications technologies, such as motion capture systems, have been introduced to sophisticate the training methods used in physiotherapy. However, the methods employed in most training schools for physiotherapists and occupational therapists remain dependent on more conventional materials. These materials include conventional textbooks with samples of traditional gait motion photographs and video archives of patients’ walking motion. Actual on-site clinical training is also utilized in current physiotherapy education programs. The present paper addresses an application of previously developed digital human model called kinematic digital human (KDH) to physiotherapy education with a focus on improving students’ understanding of the gait motion of disabled patients. KDH models for use in physiotherapy were constructed based on Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center terminology, which is considered the preferred standard among clinicians. The developed KDH models were employed to allow the three-dimensional visualization of the gait motion of a hemiplegic patient.

Oza, Shardul, and Jacobus Cilliers. What Did Children Do During School Closures? Insights from a Parent Survey in Tanzania. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-ri_2021/027.

Full text
Abstract:
In this Insight Note, we report results of a phone survey that the RISE Tanzania Research team conducted with 2,240 parents (or alternate primary care-givers) of primary school children following the school closures in Tanzania. After the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Tanzania on 16 March 2020, the government ordered all primary schools closed the following day. Schools remained closed until 29 June 2020. Policymakers and other education stakeholders were concerned that the closures would lead to significant learning loss if children did not receive educational support or engagement at home. To help stem learning loss, the government promoted radio, TV, and internet-based learning content to parents of school-age children. The primary aims of the survey were to understand how children and families responded to the school closures, the education related activities they engaged in, and their strategies to send children back to school. The survey also measures households’ engagement with remote learning content over the period of school closures. We supplement the findings of the parent survey with insights from interviews with Ward Education Officers about their activities during the school closures. The survey sample is comprised of primary care-givers (in most cases, parents) of students enrolled in Grades 3 and 4 during the 2020 school year. The survey builds on an existing panel of students assessed in 2019 and 2020 in a nationally representative sample of schools.4 The parent surveys were conducted using Computer Assisted Telephonic Interviewing (CATI) over a two-week period in early September 2020, roughly two months after the re-opening of primary schools. We report the following key findings from this survey: *Almost all (more than 99 percent) of children in our sample were back in school two months after schools re-opened. The vast majority of parents believed it was either safe or extremely safe for their children to return to school. *Only 6 percent of households reported that their children listened to radio lessons during the school closures; and a similar fraction (5.5 percent) tuned into TV lessons over the same period. Less than 1 percent of those surveyed accessed educational programmes on the internet. Households with access to radio or TV reported higher usage. *Approximately 1 in 3 (36 percent) children worked on the family farm during the closures, with most children working either 2 or 3 days a week. Male children were 6.2 percentage points likelier to work on the family farm than female children. *Households have limited access to education materials for their child. While more than 9 out of 10 households have an exercise book, far fewer had access to textbooks (35 percent) or own reading books (31 percent). *One in four parents (24 percent) read a book to their child in the last week.
