Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop an illuminated polymeric optical fibre (POF) garment – the LUMI jacket – with accessibility and wearability improvements. This paper demonstrates how wearable technology can be seamlessly integrated into daily life. Design/methodology/approach An interdisciplinary approach involving design and technological techniques was adopted. Both garment design approaches and textile technologies were used to optimise the performance of a POF jacket. As concerns over textile waste and its environmental consequences grow, efficient garment recycling practices are becoming increasingly vital. One challenge in recycling is distinguishing between eco-friendly and chemical inks used in garment labels. This study proposes a practical solution by printing a simple eco-ink symbol directly onto the neck label of garments. The neck label is chosen for its durability and high visibility, ensuring the eco-ink symbol remains intact throughout the garment’s life cycle. This labeling method enables recyclers to easily identify and segregate garments prin

Textiles used in clothing pose a large environmental burden from their initial manufacturing, maintenance and end of life. Garment production is a major problem whose environmental impacts can be easily quantified since it is a defined production process. To implement sustainable processes, it is necessary to evaluate the entire life cycle of a garment, including its maintenance and end-of-life. In this study, the maintenance phase of the garment is investigated. The garment maintenance is divided into real applied steps, and these individual steps are analysed in terms of raw material especia

The textile industry faces challenges due to the increasing global population, growing wealth and consumerism in emerging markets, and fast consumption in developed countries. Meeting consumer demand significantly strains natural resources, and solutions are needed to handle the large amounts of waste generated. Currently, textile waste that cannot be reused is either dumped in landfills, incinerated for energy recovery, or sold for down-cycling. These options are costly and do not address the issue of natural resource depletion since they do not displace virgin fiber textiles. Down-cycling an
