Full textTextile reinforcement represents an excellent alternative to existing techniques for strengthening of concrete structures, combining the benefits of lightweight fiber reinforced polymer strengthening with those of shotcrete with reinforcement. The theoretical and experimental studies in this thesis provide essential insights into the common load bearing behaviour of reinforcing steel and textile reinforcements as well as on the impact of the different bond characteristics of both types of rein-forcement. With the theoretical investigations, the combined load bearing behaviour and the influence of the different bond characteristics on distribution of the forces could be shown and qualified. The inter-action of both reinforcement types, taking into account the different bond characteristics, can be represented by bond coefficients analogous to the approach to mixed steel and pre-stressing-steel reinforcements. So as to derive the appropriate parameters, several options were discussed. Moreover, a simplified approach to design a TRC-strengthening-layer was proposed. Overall, the results are an essential step towards the practical application of textile reinforced con-crete for the strengthening of concrete structures and should already be encouraging the prudent use while considering the necessary safety aspects. Remaining issues and necessary clarifications should stimulate curiosity and in-depth research projects and allow further experimental studies

Full textThe stress-oriented arrangement of fibre materials, such as glass or carbon, which have an excellent load-bearing capacity, leads to technical textiles that may be incorporated into a concrete matrix. So a new, innovative composite material is produced, which can be used for the production of new concrete members and also for the restoration and strengthening of existing structures. As the materials used are noncorrosive compared to steel and as they show great strength at the same time, textile-reinforced concrete can be used for strengthening tasks of small dimensions. With regard to timber structures, textile reinforcement can compensate the strength and stiffness differences caused by anisotropy and can increase durability. If textile structures are used instead of steel gussets this may lead to a considerable increase in the ultimate strength and the ductility of joints. The five fields of the project are designed that theoretical and experimental investigations are carried out to provide the fundamentals of the materials. Additionally information will be obtained about the mechanical description, the detailing and the dimensioning, the techniques of applying, the realisation on the site and the long-term behaviour. All leading to a safety concept and also a service life concept for the use of textile reinforcements for restoration and strengthening

Full textThis thesis is mainly based on results of experimental methods. Uniaxial tension tests on strain specimens provide a basis for a description of the load bearing behaviour in the form of stress-strain-curves. It is well known, that the accomplishment of tension tests causes several problems. Therefore the test set-up is described in detail. Deficiencies and their impact on test results are discussed extensively. For the assessment of bond properties the perimeter of the contact area between fibres and matrix is a crucial parameter. A new procedure has been developed for estimating this and other geometrical properties of the reinforcement. Digital images of traditional thin section petrography are analysed with digital image analysis software. The consideration of a multitude of influences enables a reproducible determination of the perimeter of the contact area between fibres and matrix as well as the cross sectional area of the fibre bundles for the first time without subjective influences. The load bearing behaviour of unidirectional fabric reinforcement made from AR-glass filament yarns is examined with experimental methods. Stress-strain-curves from uniaxial tension tests on strain specimen provide a basis. Reinforcements of unidirectional multi filament yarns show already phenomenon?s that are not known from reinforcements with compact homogeneous cross sections (bars or wires). Multi filament yarns could be indicated as an composite material itself whose properties vary in a wide range. During fabric production with textile technologies the (bond-)properties are subject to crucial changes. The adding of extra layers of yarns and needle thread required for connecting these layers are of vital importance. Textile processing changes shape and packing density of the multi filament yarns. The interaction of all these influences and the possible range of combining all parameters lead to pronounced changes in the mechanical properties of textile reinforced concrete also compared to unidirectional fibre reinforcement. Using simple to handle models this work attempts to explain characteristics of the mechanical behaviour. However, for textile reinforced concrete there is often not a clear connection visible. Although numerous typical characteristics of textile reinforced concrete and their causes has been identified. Finally some considerations for optimising fabric reinforcements are given, which has been derived from observed phenomenons and their causes

Full textThe safe introduction and transmission of forces is a requirement for the workability as well as the possibility to make full use of the load bearing capacities of components and strengthening layers made of textile reinforced concrete. Accordingly, an unfavourable configuration and arrangement of the composite material’s individual components can lead to various modes of bond failure. These can result from the formation of bond damaging delamination cracks and longitudinal matrix splitting, local spalling of the concrete layer in the outer reinforcement layers or early yarn pull-out from the concrete. In this context, the areas of end anchorage and lap joints of the textile reinforcement, which cannot be avoided when using textile reinforced concrete, are particularly prone to failure. However, no comprehensive and coherent investigations regarding the safe configuration and dimensioning of these essential details are available yet. Consequently, systematic research into textile reinforced concrete’s load-bearing behaviour in the areas of end anchorage and lap joints and the subsequent description was the main goal of this dissertation. A working and damage-free transmission of bond force is the basis for a faultless load transmission and introduction. As a result, extensive tests concerning the characterization of the mechanisms and forces acting between reinforcing textile and fine grained concrete matrix were carried out as the first part of the investigations. After an appropriate test setup had been developed, a great variety of parameters was applied to experimentally examine the bond behaviour specific to the textile. The determination of the influencing factors resulting from various parameters in the textile reinforcement’s processing was a focus in the research. Based on a specifically developed modelling technique, the test results could be used to calculate the corresponding bond stress-slip-relation. The bond parameters, which were determined like this, served as the basis for the following calculations. The second part of the investigations was concerned with the load-bearing behaviour in end anchorage areas. In this case, the limit state of a yarn pull-out from the concrete matrix, which is usually essential for the dimensioning, was at the centre of attention. The investigations encompassed experimental and theoretical tests regarding the description of the force transmission. Based on the determined compound parameters, an independent analytic evaluation algorithm, which served to describe the load carrying behaviour of the bond in the end anchorage area, was presented. Through this algorithm, the detailed calculation of the required end anchorage lengths of textile reinforced concrete depending on the specific reinforcement textile was possible. The third research focus was on tests regarding the load-bearing behaviour of lap joints in textile reinforced concrete components. With the help of comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses of variously configured and reinforced textile reinforced concretes, the decisive failure mechanisms were examined. Furthermore, fundamental demands for the dimensioning and execution of the lap joint areas could be derived. The findings were confirmed through tests on large-sized building components with corresponding lap joints. At the end of the investigations, a simplified engineering model is presented. This model makes a universally valid and exact dimensioning of the examined details possible while also paying attention to the decisive limit states

Full textA safe introduction and transmission of the acting forces is crucial for the functioning of composite materials. Because of the very high yarn tensile strengths of textile reinforcements made of carbon, the manufacturing of very effective TRC strengthening layers is possible. In TRC members, overlap joints within the textile layers usually cannot be avoided. This contribution deals with the experimental and analytical determination of the lap lengths of textile fabrics within a textile reinforced concrete strengthening layer

Full textThis paper provides an overview on the results of textile concrete achieved in twelve years of research at the Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology (ITM) in the field of textile reinforcements for concrete based on the multiaxial stitch-bonding technology. During the early years the research focused on the development of the textile manufacturing process and the integration of additional functions in stitch-bonding machines. With the introduction of new fiber materials this was shifted towards the description of the material behavior of glass and carbon fibers under different load scenarios. Based on the results of this research, multiaxial multi-ply fabrics are available now as reinforcements for concrete, covering a broad range of applications. These fabrics can be produced with high quality and productivity and enable the practical usage of textile reinforced concrete

Full textThe load bearing and bond behaviour of textile reinforcements has been comprehensively studied experimental in recent years. The findings are based almost exclusively on uniaxial loading. Generally, from the comparison of tests on rovings and fabrics conclusions can be drawn about the influence of transverse and supporting threads and different binding patterns on the uniaxial load-bearing behaviour. However, it remains open, to what extend the found principles are applicable to multi-axial loading situations. This raises questions about the load bearing behaviour under multi-axial tension loading, which provide motivation for this work. For the experimental studies on 84 specimens a specially developed test setup for biaxial tensile loading was used. Two different types of textile reinforcements made from AR-glass and carbon fibres were examined. The results generally approve the findings on the structural behaviour of textile reinforcements exclusively derived from uniaxial tests. A relationship between first cracking stress level and biaxial stress ratio has been found. The characteristics of the cracking phases and during stabilized cracking, however, show no significant dependencies on the ratio of longitudinal and transverse tensile stresses. Furthermore, parallel cracks induced by transverse tensile stresses have no significant impact on the bond behaviour of longitudinal rovings. An essential result from biaxial tensile tests with carbon is the strong influence of waviness. It became clear that the reduction of waviness in coated textile reinforcement is highly load-dependent. In numerous experiments with carbon reinforcement delamination occurred during stabilized cracking – an effect, that has been observed in this large scale for the first time. The findings regarding the reduction of the waviness were subsequently applied to AR-glass and led to a revaluation of the known stiffness deficit in the phase IIb. Furthermore, the influence of reinforcement orientation has been studied on discoidal specimens under uni-axial loading. It was found that the load bearing capacity of carbon reinforcement is much more sensible to load orientation than AR-glass. A mathematical model was presented, which allows the separate description of geometric factors and as well as all other effects that reduce the fibre tensile strength
