Abstract This paper attempts to establish some basis for the combination of discourse markers in conversations. The analysis presented here will be based on Spanish spontaneous conversations and will make use of the Val.Es.Co model of discourse units developed in the last ten years (Briz et al. 2003; Grupo Val.Es.Co 2014) and a corpus of spontaneous conversations. As a result, patterns of combination of DMs will be established; some types of combinations will be described, and a distinction will be drawn between lexicalization of DMs, adjacency of DMs in two neighboring discourse units, and co

Visual Information Retrieval poses a challenge to intelligent information search systems. This is due to the semantic gap, the difference between human perception (information needs) and the machine representation of multimedia objects. Most existing image retrieval systems are monomodal, as they utilize only visual or only textual information about images. The semantic gap can be reduced by improving existing visual representations, making them suitable for a large-scale generic image retrieval. Abstract Space is a central element in human communication. In this chapter, the authors compare representations of landscapes in different media types, including texts, maps, and virtual reality to show how they express spatial conceptions. Such a comparison is necessary to understand the mechanisms behind combinations and transformations among different media; hence, it forms a useful basis for analysing media interacting with spaces more generally. Taking a step back, the authors then discuss how the materiality and concreteness of space interact with the abstract conceptual level of models. This makes it possible to study traditional two-dimensional maps and texts as well as three-dimensional modelling and virtual reality systems. Finally, the authors introduce virtual reality as a new media form in the light of empirical experiments conducted at the University of Cologne.

Abstract:
Glaucoma is a significant cause of blindness in the world. Doctors use computerized images to detect these diseases. Early detection of the disease increases the chances of treatment, reducing the adverse effects. This work proposes an evaluation of texture maps combinations as input to Convolutional Neural Networks for glaucoma classification in retinal images. In our experiments, we used three textures maps, three CNN architectures, and three classifiers. We achieve a Kappa =0.708±0.054 and a Accuracy = 0.859±0.021. We conclude that using the combination of texture maps can improve the autom

Cooling uniformity is of crucial importance for the cooling structure design of turbine vane and rotor blade. However, there exist no veritable quantification of the uniformity. This paper, for the first time, reveals the correlation between temperature distribution uniformities of the temperature image and its textural features, and five texture measures are employed to characterize these features and quantify the temperature distribution uniformity from different angles. Finally, their linear weighted combinations are proposed to obtain a comprehensive evaluation, and thus a systematic and q

Abstract:
Fake news (FN) have affected people’s lives in unimaginable ways. The automatic classification of FN is a vital tool to prevent their dissemination and support fact-checking. Related work has shown that FN spread faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth on social media. Besides, deep learning has produced state-of-the-art solutions in this field, mainly based on textual attributes. In this paper, we propose initial experiments to combine compact representations of the textual news properties generated using DistilBERT, with topological metrics extracted from the social propagation netwo

Abstract:
This study was conducted to inventory, classify, and map soils and vegetation within the ecosystems of Katmai National Park and Preserve (KATM) using an ecological land survey (ELS) approach. The ecosystem classes identified in the ELS effort were mapped across the park, using an archive of Geo-graphic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) datasets pertaining to land cover, topography, surficial geology, and glacial history. The description and mapping of the landform-vegetation-soil relationships identified in the ELS work provides tools to support the design and implementation of
