This article positions Lik-wai’s 2008 Sino-Brazilian film Plastic City as a precursor of BRICS cinema and, through a close textual analysis demonstrates how it critically engages Sino-Brazilian relations, flows of capital, commodities, immigration and culture, as well as environmental issues in a matrix of globalization from an emerging economy perspective. Plastic City is intertextually linked to Chinese, Brazilian and world cinema, illuminating its connections to past and present film movements and how it mobilizes their poetics and politics.

Publications of the Bakhtin Circle in the mid-twenties showed major interest in psychoanalysis. Voloshinov, the central figure of this interest, published book-length critical analyses and detailed presentations of this contemporary psychology in 1927. It seems, however, that other and later works of the Bakhtin Circle show no direct connection with psychoanalysis. In this paper we seek to draw attention to some striking and heretofore unnoticed textual connections between Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments and David Hume's A Treatise of Human Nature. We find significant textual parallels between the parable of the poor man's son of TMS 4.1 (TMS 4.1.8-4.1.10) and the famous conclusion to Book 1 of Hume's Treatise. This chapter explores how the sacrificium relates to offertory chants in other liturgical traditions, yielding insight into its prehistory and the influences that shaped its development. The textual, exegetical, and musical connections explored in this chapter establish that the sacrificium was part of a larger, pan-European tradition, whose practice extended into southern Gaul, northern Italy, North Africa, and Rome. The Old Hispanic repertory was nonetheless exceptional in its concentration of these particular kinds of chants, perhaps because they were so well suited to the educational and devotional milieu of Visigothic Iberia. After exploring these other repertories, the chapter turns to musical questions, illustrating certain commonalities in style between the Old Hispanic and Gregorian offertories and posing questions for further research.

This chapter discusses Arabic and Malay texts which prove the existence of an intellectual Islamic connection between Aceh and the Ottomans. The central figure in this connection is Ibrahim al-Kurani (1616–90), a Kurdish scholar who was born in Shahrazur, a town in present-day Iraqi Kurdistan. In this context Shahrazur deserves special mention since it produced numerous scholars who would have an impact on the development of Islam in Southeast Asia, including Aceh. In terms of Ottoman–Aceh intellectual connections, al-Kurani's role was particularly significant. He wrote an Arabic Sufi work entitled Itḥāf al-dhakī, which was transmitted by his Malay pupil, ῾Abd al-Ra᾿uf (1615–93), in both Arabic and Malay versions. This study also brought to light two khuṭbah manuscripts from Aceh, which illustrate clearly the involvement of Aceh in the khuṭbah networks of the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century.

PN: There’s a related interest here in breaking with conventional forms of narrative. In one of your later stories, Madame Realism writes in her notebook: ‘Beware of premature closure’ (MR, 147), and this distrust of narratives which are driven by a need for endings is already there in Haunted Houses. LT: Yes, that’s right. PN: And a lot of this depends on how you think about memory. Haunted Houses offers at least two different views: Jane, for example, thinks that ‘there was just as much invention in versions of the past as in what’s written about the future’ (H, 100), while Jimmy wonders whether ‘remembering things keeps you from thinking new thoughts’ (H, 103). LT: I don’t think you have a choice between these two. Memory is in fact very active. A sociologist who read Motion Sickness in manuscript said he was disgusted by it because the narrator was so passive. And I said what do you mean ‘passive’? She thinks all the time. PN: ‘Grace thought her time in bars would lead to something but Lisa said she shouldn’t expect anything to lead to anything’ (H, 146). In Motion Sickness you describe a fight as ‘much less conclusive’ than a prizefight or a baseball game—‘It’s much more like fiction’ (M, 21). How does this inconclusiveness relate to the narrative desire to connect one thing with another? LT: They’re in bed together. You wouldn’t have that desire to connect one thing with another unless there was all this inconclusiveness. Again, it’s the absence of an ability to make a conclusion that draws you to want to make connections. PN: That recalls Gertrude Stein’s comment about any assemblage of heterogeneous things already containing implicit narrative links. LT: I’m sure she was influenced by the Kuleshov experiment in film, that when you edit, you can put images together and no matter what, the viewer makes connections. This chapter considers the physical and emotional intimacies of both epistolary practice and the rope belay of mountaineering as affective “binding lines,” examples of the body’s “webbed relations”. These two activities are brought together in the figures of Virginia Woolf and the mountaineer and letter-writer George Mallory, as both climbing and epistolary practice are figured as forms of textual and somatic contact in which brain, body, and world are intertwined. The chapter explores the connection between these two tactile and reciprocal acts – and the connections produced between a letter-writing woman and the climbers she observes – in Woolf’s late, Alpine story ‘The Symbol’.
