Abstract:
It is unlikely that any country in Asia in recent years has undergone such internal policy shifts in so short a time as Myanmar. Until recently, the former British colony had one of the most secretive, corrupt, and repressive regimes on the planet, a country where Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi was held in continual house arrest and human rights were denied to nearly all. Yet events in Myanmar since the elections of November 2010 have profoundly altered the internal mood of the society, and have surprised even Burmese and seasoned foreign observers of the Myanmar scene. This chapter focuses on correspondents who came to Burma in December 1941, just as the Japanese started bombing Rangoon and their land assault in southern Burma was getting underway. Two of the strongest critics of the Governor were Leland Stowe and O’Dowd Gallagher. There is a marked contrast between the supportive approach they took in their newspaper dispatches and the much more critical approach taken in their later memoirs. The issues raised are the war in the air over Rangoon, the sheltering and evacuation of civilians from the cities, the failure to bring in contingents of the Chinese a

Abstract:
The second half of the twentieth century was marked by the phenomenon of state-sponsored violence against secessionist rebellions. That was certainly true in Asia in newly independent states, including India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Burma, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, which all sought to quell one or more armed movements for autonomy or independence by resorting to violence. This article examines, from a comparative perspective, four instances of such violence. Focusing on East Pakistan, the Karen areas of Burma, West Papua in Indonesia, and East Timor, it begins with an empirical ac

This chapter looks at the much-criticized role of the Governor of Burma, Sir Reginald Dorman-Smith, who took over in May 1941. Although the correspondents were restrained in their criticisms of the governor while the campaign was progressing, some of them did not hold back in their later books, which were subject to much less censorship. The focus of criticism was on civil defense arrangements in Rangoon, on Dorman-Smith’s supposed influence on military strategy, on his failure to implement martial law in the city, and to recognize the extent of Burmese “fifth column” activity. Abstract:
This chapter gives a brief outline of the historiography of the Burma campaign; military histories predominate, but there has been an increasing interest in the civilian experience, and also in the wider impact on the growth of Burmese nationalism, leading to independence in 1948. The historical debate on the role of war correspondents is also discussed. It has been argued that journalists misled the public about the reality of the war and military setbacks. This book examines the work of some twenty-six international correspondents who reported on the retreat from Burma, nearly half of whom a

This chapter looks at the reporting of the story of the largest group of victims of the British defeat in Burma, the civilian refugees. The majority of the refugees were Indian, and tens of thousands of them died in the long trek into India. The journalists’ coverage of this issue was not their finest reporting. They were slow to recognize the enormity of the problems raised by tens of thousands of refugees trying to reach India by land, sea and air, and the potential for a repetition of the racial discrimination that had been shown in the Malaya evacuation.
