Collins, David A. "Absentee soldier voting in Civil War law and politics." Thesis, Wayne State University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3643244.
Full textDuring the Civil War, twenty northern states changed their laws to permit absent soldiers to vote. Before enactment of these statutes, state laws had tethered balloting to the voter's community and required in-person participation by voters. Under the new laws, eligible voters – as long as they were soldiers – could cast ballots in distant military encampments, far from their neighbors and community leaders. This dissertation examines the legal conflicts that arose from this phenomenon and the political causes underlying it. Legally, the laws represented an abrupt change, contrary to earlier scholarship viewing them as culminating a gradual process of relaxing residency rules in the antebellum period. In fact, the laws left intact all prewar suffrage qualifications, including residency requirements. Their radicalism lay not in changing rules about who could vote, but in departing from the prewar legal blueprint of what elections were and how voters participated in them. The changes were constitutionally problematic, generating court challenges in some states and constitutional amendments in others. Ohio's experience offers a case study demonstrating the radicalism of the legal change and the constitutional tension it created. In political history, prior scholarship has largely overlooked the role the issue of soldier voting played in competition for civilian votes. The politics of 1863-1864 drew soldiers into partisan messaging, since servicemen spoke with authority on the themes the parties used to attack their opponents: the candidates' military incompetence, Lincoln's neglect of the troops, and McClellan's cowardice and disloyalty. Soldiers participated politically not only as voters, but also as spokesmen for these messages to civilian voters. In this setting, the soldier-voting issue became a battleground in partisan efforts to show kinship with soldiers. The issue's potency became evident nationally after the 1863 Pennsylvania gubernatorial race, presaging the 1864 presidential contest. The Republican incumbent ran as "the soldiers' friend" and attacked his Democratic rival as the enemy of soldiers for opposing that state's soldier-voting law. The issue was decisive in securing civilian votes for the victorious Republican. That experience launched a nationwide push by Republicans to enact soldier-voting laws in time for the 1864 elections.

Sylvester, Frederick James. "At risk youth: the experiences of adolescent boys with absent fathers." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/4121.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The single-parent, female-headed household is a global phenomenon. In a patriarchal society such as South Africa, the absence of a father figure in the family place mothers in the unenviable position of having to play a double role, namely that of mother as well as the head of the family. The role of absent fathers in the at-riskness of adolescent boys is under researched in South Africa. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the perceptions and experiences of ten adolescent boys who are growing up in father absent homes. The participants were from a low socio-economic area of the Western Cape, and high school pupils who were purposively selected from Grades 8, 9 and 10. A qualitative research methodology was used and data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews, a focus group discussion and the construction of collages. The findings showed that adolescent boys face many challenges in their development when they grow up without a strong male role model. These ten adolescents seemed to struggle with discipline issues at school as well as at home. They are at a vulnerable age, and at risk of making decisions that would be devastating to their futures.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die enkelouer, vrou-as-hoof huishouding is ‟n globale fenomeen.

Full textThe improvement of living standards is the main objective of individual migration, but its results can be opposite. This dissertation studies the implications of migration in two distinct and important literatures. The Fiscal Federalism tradition suggests that migration can lead to severing regional and social disparities. In many cases, the individually rational decision is collectively irrational, resulting in a worse living standard for the immigrant. The New Economic Geography suggests that migration do work for the migrating people, but still can result in an increase in regional disparities. After some critiques to assumptions and hypotheses of those two theories, it is presented a model in which the migration increases inequality in the attractive community because of the land ownership.

Full textAll teachers will inevitably be confronted with issues related to students’ absence. This study sets out to investigate how language teachers’ daily work is affected when students are absent.Four language teachers at an upper secondary school were interviewed about their experiences of and their views on students’ non-attendance. They were also asked to describe how they handle absence as a part of their daily routines. All the informants thought that absence is a serious problem. Form teachers’ workload is especially affected if their class has many students with high absence. Their strategies for handling absence were based on their aim to keep their workload down and to obtain fairness and equivalence.

Full textDoes the tragic heroine play the same Aristotelian role as the hero? Six plays are examined: Euripides’ Andromache, Iphigeneia in Aulis and Hippolytos, and Racine’s Andromaque, Iphigénie and Phèdre et Hippolyte. The three pairs of heroines, considered in turn, have specific limits to their capacity for direct heroic action, compared to typical heroes. At the same time, their presence and actions, even constrained, open the question of women’s condition – which the Greeks were the first to conceptualise, and which the French XVIIth c. also foregrounded, at least for educated women. The fourth chapter looks at some further examples of heroines, illustrating aspects of their representation in tragedy.Fifthly is considered the impact, of the presence and absence of the tragic heroine, on tragedy as a form of cultural inscription which has contributed to the evolution of the imaginaire. Different aspects of the Aristotelian model of tragedy such as muthos, hamartia, hubris, anagnorisis, catharsis are explored in terms of how the tragic heroine represents these functions. The conclusions reflect on the cultural transmission of the heroine from myth to epic, cult, the tragedy of antiquity and of French classicism, to contemporary forms). A recent linguistics theory, the X-bar theory is mentioned as a possible cognitive model to conceptualise this continuity in discontinuity, through societies which have so differently validated the female, but may all have been affected by the performative heroine. The author’s own theory of structure and counterstructure is a possible model for observing the evolution of men-women relations, beyond polarising or binary-oppositional cognitive frames. Finally, “heroine studies” are a possible fruitful research area for literature and cultural studies

Full textThe purpose of this thesis has been to analyse seven major factors that tend to influence the rate of early retirement in Sweden. The scope of data was gathered for every municipality in Sweden. Economic theories of labour supply, Moral Hazard, Adverse Selection and the Insurance Model were used to analyse the empirical results. In the analysis, earlier studies of the rate of sickness absence were important and used as a framework in choosing the explanatory variables for the econometric model. The analysed variables were; average income, average sickness days, educational level, foreign born, public sector employment, unemployment and the share of women in the population. As a consequence of the rift that occurred in 2003, when the average sickness days decreased and disbursed early retirements simultaneously increased, the relationship between these two variables was given special attention. The empirical findings confirmed our conjectures and were consistent with earlier research. Average income and the level of education were negatively related to the rate of early retirement. Moreover foreign born, average sickness days and unemployment showed a positive relation to early retirement. The relationship between average sickness days and early retirement had statistically changed and decreased between the years. A possibility is that other factors, such as changed social norms and increased stress in society (which are difficult to measure in a statistical and economical sense) might have become more relevant in explaining the rate of early retirement.
Greenberg, Stuart Elliott. "Measuring absence cultures: an examination of absence perceptions of males and females." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44639.
Full textAbsenteeism was explored from a social psychological perspective. The purpose was to measure the absence cultures (Nicholson and Johns, l9S5) of male and female employees through the use of policy capturing (Hobson and Gibson, l9S3). Absence was split into three dimensions: Personal Health, Stress Relief, and Family Responsibility (Nicholson and Payne, l9S7). One hundred and two employees of a large southeastern university were used as subjects. They were asked to give their own opinion and their opinion of their organization's view about the inappropriateness/appropriateness of the absence behaviors in the 27 policy capturing vignettes. They were also asked to give their subjective weighting of how they used each dimension to make their overall rating.

Teacher quality is of critical importance in student achievement. In addition to previous training, experience and teaching methodologies, teacher assiduity plays a pivotal role in pupils' development. In this paper, we investigate how teacher absences are influenced by their colleagues at work. More specifically, we try to answer if there are peer effects behind teachers’ behavior. We resort to a model of instrumental variables to isolate the causal impact from potential identification problems arising from endogenous group formation and estimate a positive, significant peer effect of teacher absences on those of their colleagues. Additionally, we explore how teachers under different contract regimes are affected, and show peer effects are not linear – what suggests the existence of an optimal allocation of teachers that minimizes collective absences. Furthermore, we show teachers exert discretion on absences, and that this kind of absences are what mainly drives our results.

Full text"Shards and absences. Ethnographic fictions” develops a survey around ethnographic representation, giving rise to a series of films in which anthropology and fiction intertwine: the "ethnographic fictions ".This sensitive and practical inquiry begins around the notion of exoticism, analyzing the construction of "the native" in the "New World". This initial research gives birth to films staging in vivo and in vitro jungles in Europe and America, which link botanical gardens and tropical greenhouses with the archives of colonization. These films also explore the moments of "first contact" between travellers and natives. Fiction appears as a narrative strategy to counteract a History mostly told from the point of view of the conquerors. The inquiry then establishes a dialogue with visual anthropology. A displacement is made in regard to Jean Rouch’s "ethnofiction", while including the practices preceding him, and those subsequent to him, with an intrinsic ambiguity between ethnographic immersion and fiction . A series of new films are developed between the laboratory of experimental ethnography Sensory Ethnography Lab of Harvard University, Colombia and Mexico. If this doctoral research takes its source in the analysis of the cinematographic representations of the "native", it evolves over time towards forms of auto-ethnography and autofiction, self-reflexive approaches to construct a place of singular enunciation. Thus, it is no longer a question of "talking about ..." a community (a specific approach of the television documentary), but rather of speaking "close to it" (following the words of the director Trinh T. Min-ha ) or to "speak with" it (echoing the formulation of the anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro). Fiction and its narrative uses are indispensable for the films created during this inquiry: it allows building a shared space, political laboratories to think of social emancipation, on an individual and collective level. Sol Negro (2016) and La Libertad (2017) are the key pieces of the latter series. The creation of these works also gave birth to a set of writings, published articulations, performances and a public exhibition at the end of this thesis, entitled "Disappearing operations" . This traveling exhibition, material and immaterial, took place between 30 November and 15 December 2016, at the Cinéma Le Méliès, Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers and the Beaux-Arts in Paris
Norberg, Magnus, and Mikael Jomer. "The Absence of Culture?" Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Business Studies, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-7866.
Full textThis thesis attempts to investigate if national culture still is a factor to consider for large multinational organizations when choosing a supplier, or if the global business environment due to globalization has become so standardized and homogenous that the influence of national culture differences has diminished. Existing academic literature is divided regarding this matter; some studies indicate that the influence of national culture on business relations is subtle while other argues that national culture differences may be a source for potential barriers and problems and therefore still an important factor to consider. The issue of globalization has also divided researchers, some argue that globalization has made it possible for a homogenous business culture to emerge while other argue that globalization is a myth and ‘global companies’ are in reality regional. Empirical information was collected through interviews at head offices from four large Swedish multinational companies and questions were asked to determine the importance of national culture when choosing a supplier, the influence national culture has on organizational culture and to what extent a homogenous business culture has emerged. The study’s findings identified little evidence to support the idea that cultural difference is a significant factor to consider when conducting business relations. None or very little consideration to national cultural differences was paid when choosing a supplier. However, consideration was sometimes taken to organizational culture, which findings indicate is partly influenced by national culture. The interviewed organizations were of the opinion that at high management level a ‘global culture’ has emerged, and therefore the ‘way of doing business’ has become more uniform. The conclusion, which turned into more of a tendency indication, made from this thesis were that although national cultural differences still exist and probably will do so for some time, the influence it has on ‘business-to-business’ relations between multinational organizations at high management levels has diminished due to the emergence of a more homogenous global business culture.

The emotive power of a memorial derives from its ability to engage the viewer in active remembrance. The project considers the limitations of a monumentality which embraces a distinct division between viewer and memorial. Collapsing the traditionally bifurcated relationship between the viewer and object, the memorial becomes inhabitable- unifying the experience of the viewer with the substance and physicality of the memorial. Once the notion of the archetypal memorial is dissolved, the spatial memorial is then open to interpretation with respect to architectural conditions. The thesis proposes a migratory World War II memorial which inhabits the Pacific Ocean. Bound between the unfathomable sectional depth of the Pacific and the reaches of the sky, the memorial drifts in international waters across the seemingly infinite plane of the ocean. Tracing a peripatetic path across the expanse, the memorial makes manifest the intangible ephemera of memory and silence through the studied manipulation of spatial experience.

Full textOver the course of a therapist’s career, absences from work are inevitable. Although therapist absences undoubtedly impact the therapy process, the topic has not received sufficient attention to produce helpful guidelines. Instead, clinicians looking to the literature for recommendations find less in peer-reviewed journals regarding therapist absences than they would if they were to turn to popular media geared toward a client audience (Barchat, 1988). This study sought to begin to remedy this research gap using a Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) research design focusing on anticipated therapist absences. Ten therapists with at least two years of experience post-licensure were asked about their general thoughts and approach to absences and the training they had received regarding therapist absences. They were also asked to discuss in depth a time that they were absent during therapy with an individual, adult client, focusing on the period before, during, and after the absence, as well as its overall impact. Participants reported generally receiving minimal or no formal supervision or training regarding therapist absences, and experiencing emotional distress when thinking about absences as a whole. When asked about specific absences, however, participants reported experiencing more positive than negative emotions, creating a plan with the client, and generally achieving positive outcomes. Implications are discussed, including recommendations for training, clinical work, and future research.
