This thesis is concerned with the project which J.N. Findlay has called absolute-theory (see his book <i>Ascent to the Absolute</i> London: George Allen and Unwin 1970, and his article 'Bradley's contribution to Absolute-theory' in <i>The Philosophy of F.H.Bradley</i> edited by Guy Stock and Anthony Manser, Oxford: Clarendon 1984). In absolute-theory one is concerned with (1) determining the abstract or formal characteristics, the form as it were, of the fundamental existent or existents on which all things depend, and (ii) evaluating the candidates that might be said to fit the abstract form.

One possible way of achieving absolute asymmetric synthesis is by "freezing" the chirality of a molecule by crystaUisation. This work is a study of the synthesis of :ertain imides which have potential for axial chirality and are likely to undergo spontaneous resolution on crystallisation. The synthesis starts from achiral compounds and therefore, if it does yield chiral crystals by spontaneous resolution, it can be classified as absolute asymmetric synthesis.

The relative configuration of the four stereocenters of spiropyrazolones 1, epi-1 and 2 was determined by NMR-NOE analysis. It turned out that while compound 1 has the 1R*, 2S*, 3R*, 4S* relative configuration, epi-1 is the diastereoisomer at the C-4 (1R*, 2S*, 3R*, 4R* relative configuration). This thesis investigates the connections between henselian valuations and absolute Galois groups. There are fundamental links between these: On one hand, the absolute Galois group of a field often encodes information about (henselian) valuations on that field. On the other, in many cases a henselian valuation imposes a certain structure on an absolute Galois group which makes it easier to study. We are particularly interested in the question of when a field admits a non-trivial parameter-free definable henselian valuation.
