Zartaloudis, Thanos. The Birth of Nomos. Edinburgh University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474442008.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Birth of Nomos delves into the history of the fundamental ancient Greek word nomos (and its family and other related words) to extensively examine the varied co-existent uses of the terms from the archaic to the early classical period, before and beyond its later meaning of 'law' or 'law-making'. The Birth of Nomos draws on the literary evidence in the works of the poets, philosophers and tragedians including Homer, Hesiod, Alcman, Pindar, Archilochos, Theognis, Heraclitus, Plato, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. In doing so it critically reflects on how nomos and its complex genealogy have been used by contemporary philosophers, including Agamben, Foucault, Heidegger, Schmitt, Nancy, Deleuze and Axelos.

Abstract:
The central role played in Henry VII’s government by low-born lawyers, financial officials, and household men was recognized by contemporaries and has been stressed by historians. Yet, with a few exceptions, their careers have not been examined in detail. This chapter introduces those of Henry’s ‘new men’ already well known from the work of other scholars—Sir Reynold Bray, Edmund Dudley, and Sir Richard Empson—and others who demand further investigation. These include financial officers and household administrators such as Sir Thomas Lovell, Sir Henry Wyatt, Sir Andrew Windsor, Sir John Hussey, and Sir Robert Southwell; courtiers, military commanders, and diplomats like Sir Edward Poynings and Sir Thomas Brandon; and servants of Prince Henry like Sir Henry Marney.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter reviews the existing literature on the use of hormonal contraception (HC) and sexual functioning. In the cases where HC has been shown to lead to a decrease in sexual functioning, the chapter presents several hypotheses for the mechanisms that could be responsible for those changes, such as micronutrient depletion and elevations in sex hormone binding globulin with consequent reductions in free testosterone. Throughout this chapter, the authors make a case for clinicians to take care to inform patients of the potential sexual side effects of hormonal contraceptives, bearing in mind that it may be advisable for women who use them to supplement with certain vitamins and minerals. This may be an especially important consideration for women with genetic polymorphisms in methylation. The chapter concludes with a clinical case study.

Chang, Eugene. Neuroprotection for Premature Birth and Neonatal Brain Injury. Edited by David L. Reich, Stephan Mayer, and Suzan Uysal. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190280253.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
Preterm birth is associated with increased risk of perinatal brain injury. Although there has been little headway made in reducing preterm birth rates, survival of infants born prematurely has improved greatly. Because of this, the neurodevelopmental consequences related to prematurity have become significant issues, especially in those infants born at less than 32 weeks gestation. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy commonly leads to neonatal brain injury both before and after delivery. While perinatal birth asphyxia accounts for a proportion of neonatal brain injury in neonates younger than 37 weeks, preterm birth is the more significant risk factor. This chapter explores the neurodevelopmental consequences associated with preterm birth, the pathophysiology of perinatal brain injury, and the imaging modalities used to assess the newborn brain. Finally, various neuroprotective interventions in clinical use and in development will be described.

Abstract:
The principles of high-risk labour and the midwifery management are discussed in this chapter. The care of women encountering difficult births is a theme throughout. Issues, such as induction of labour, vaginal birth after a Caesarean section, and instrumental birth, are discussed step by step. New and updated evidence has been used to inform the reader’s practice.

Solinger, Rickie. Reproduction, Birth Control, and Motherhood in the United States. Edited by Ellen Hartigan-O'Connor and Lisa G. Materson. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190222628.013.20.

Full text
Abstract:
The history of reproductive politics in the United States incorporates several centuries of struggle and resistance and virtually no periods of quiescence. The state and other institutions have frequently clashed within and against each other and with girls and women, over who has primary power to govern female sexuality, fertility, and maternity: institutions, or women themselves. These struggles have always been racialized. From the eighteenth century forward, authorities have promulgated laws and public policies embedding population-control aims, investing some groups with greater reproductive value than others. In the modern era, “choice” emerged as the mark of reproductive freedom, chiefly defined as the right to limit and terminate pregnancy. More recently, “reproductive justice” contends that all people have the human right to be a parent; to forgo parenting; and to access the resources required to exercise the first two rights with dignity and safety.

Present and Future of Birth Defects Surveillance in the Americas. Organización Panamericana de la Salud, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275121924.

Full text
Abstract:
Birth defects contribute substantially to the burden of morbidity and mortality in the Region of the Americas. Numerous efforts exist to raise awareness of this problem and to implement surveillance in health and government sectors. However, there is still a long way to go. In this regard, for several years, countries have been taking actions to coordinate efforts, while strengthening and establishing strategic alliances to achieve significant results. The extensive history of efforts aimed at responding to the situation of birth defects in the Region includes actions in health care, epidemiology, legislation, and investigation, with participation from the scientific and technical community, government, and civil society. After taking into account all these aspects, the Pan American Health Organization/Latin American Center for Perinatology, Women, and Reproductive Health (PAHO/CLAP/WR), together with the World Bank, decided to create a document summarizing the regional situation of birth defects from an epidemiological and programmatic perspective, to analyze the challenges and offer countries guidance to address birth defects, their determinants, and consequences, with the ultimate goal of helping to “leave no one behind.” This publication was made possible by financial support from the United States Agency for International Development—USAID.
