Abstract. An attempt is made to examine the role of Anatolian and Caucasus mountain ranges in the precipitation distribution over the Black Sea region and to clarify the dynamical and physical mechanisms responsible for precipitation distribution over the region. Existence of a complex topography in the southern and eastern part of the Black Sea region makes it an important region for cyclogenesis. In this study the effect of Anatolian and Caucasus Mountains on the precipitating synoptic systems forming over the Black Sea are investigated. To this end, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF

Using global NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data set on 1000 hPa geopotential height (1948–2006), cyclones in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions were detected and their main characteristics (frequency, depth, integrated area) were calculated. Analysis of their interannual-multidecadal variability in January-March associated with global processes in the ocean-atmosphere system was done. It was shown that North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) manifests in the Black Sea region mainly in the variability of frequency of cyclones while in the Mediterranean – in the interannual anomalies of cyclones'

Biological invasions pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems, and the spread of uncontrolled non-indigenous species can have detrimental effects on biodiversity, ecosystem processes, and economic activities. The Chesapeake blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, native to the western Atlantic Ocean, is non-indigenous in the Black Sea region. This study presents novel findings on its presence and breeding in the Black Sea, particularly in North-Western part within the territorial confines of Ukraine. Aim. The Black Sea region is one of the centers of diversity of bats in the Palearctic. In this regard, the main aim of the work was determined ‐ to study the species composition of the bat fauna of the Black Sea region and the distribution of bat species there. The aim becomes especially relevant if we consider that significant changes have occurred in the composition of the region’s fauna in recent years and that the distribution of chiropterans in the Black Sea region as a whole has never been the object of special research. Discussion. The article contains point maps of the distribution of

EU enlargement to the East in 2007 changed the views of the Black Sea region as a key strategic point, including the attitude of the Union itself. The accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the EU gave the Black Sea a status of «European sea», making it the eastern border of the Union. This change underlined the importance of the region in the context of European policy and security.
