Full text
Abstract:
Fool’s Gold is a collection of handmade books that illustrate selected Grimms’ fairy tales and offer an unexpected interpretation of the actions of the heroes. Each book displays a unique cover decoration, inspired by medieval European treasure bindings. Treasure bindings incorporate dimensional decorative elements such as gems, gold or other metalwork and often depict Christ's suffering. In a similar way, Fool's Gold beautifies the suffering of the protagonists using gold leaf, glass beads and lush illustrations. A traditional hidden fore-edge painting technique is used to reveal more scenes from each story. When the pages are fanned opened, the fore-edge paintings display the gruesome revenge the perceived heroes take upon the villains.

Abstract:
The things we have an intimate connection to, handle, collect, and move around with us, are treasures that we need to hold on to. They are important in coping with the balance of movement and stability in a fast-changing world. This project is an investigation of the relationship between people and objects through the making and handling of stones. I explore why and how we connect intimately with physical objects, how they become treasures to us and what it means. Through digging into the stones, connecting to their story of endurance, change and solidity, and eventually letting them go, I explore the role of touching and paying attention, in making and relating to objects and transformation. The stone objects are made from pieces of rock I have collected while travelling. All of them have been transformed by human hands before I picked them out, and many have been given out and then returned to me. Through this ongoing process of transformation and physical encounters, it is becoming clear to me that connection is not only about solidity and stillness, but also about being part of the transformation. Stone as a material is both solid and changing. I aim to make objects of stone that attract and encourage people to engage with them – to experience the pleasure and groundedness that slowing down, zooming in and getting in touch can offer.

Abstract:
Museums around the world possess hundreds of thousands of priceless objects, which have stories to tell about human history. While students and scholars study them, even the general public is interested in these stories. If there is a way to automate the information delivery system about these objects it will be of immense value, e.g. it will support students to study these objects and speed up research. Adaptive blended learning options are conceivable, which can perfectly merge digital analysis and onsite viewing. Thus, the preparation and post-processing of studied objects is just as conceivable as the adequate acquisition of information for on-site studies. Examples of such solutions would be mobile apps and computer software that can be used for history and archaeology education as well. However, it is important to identify these objects correctly in order to build such solutions. Computer vision technologies in artificial intelligence (AI) can be used for this. Therefore, this paper will show how AI-algorithms can be used for digital humanities in novel ways, such as for detecting museum treasures.

This dissertation establishes a regressive course from the recent controver-sies about the supposed censorship of the Caçadas de Pedrinho by the National Council of Education even the first children’s stories written by the author in the 1920’s. A first part of the trajectory sketch’s the tensions and conflicts about the post morten image of Monteiro Lobato and the value (positive or negative) on the second half of the 20th century. Going back, the narrative surpasses the death of the author (1948), focus the relationship with the readers and his project for a Bra-zilian infantile literature in a contrast with contemporary writers as Adelina Lopes Vieira and Júlia Lopes de Almeida, Olavo Bilac, Coelho Neto and Manuel Bonfim, Viriato Corrêa and João do Rio. Finally, analyses in detail some of the main reformulations in the assembled stories of Reinações de Narizinho. Along the way it is noticed the absence of a consolidated literary statute for children’s books, the indistinction between school’s and children’s books, and the conflict between two different concepts of infancy: one that values the imagination and fantasy and another that conceals these aspects given the imperative of coloniza-tion of the children’s souls by civic and moral values of the adult world. At the same time, all the work subordinates a central discussion about the ways children books constitutes in instruments of social negotiations of infancy, and not only representations of the same thing.

Abstract:

The relationship to food, whether on an individual or societal basis, carries with it potential for nourishment on multiple levels. A mindful, healthy connection to the sourcing, preparation, serving, and enjoyment of food can become a catalyst for inner transformation, psychologically and physiologically. Utilizing hermeneutic methodology, this thesis explores food in relation to the soul by examining historical and cultural practices and beliefs about food. Various works of literature and the writings of culinary aficionados are discussed, giving examples of savoring food and receiving deep nourishment. In addition, a heuristic approach is undertaken to demonstrate the influence food has had on this researcher by recording personal reflections on her life and on literature that include memorable stories about the healing power of food. Depth psychological practices and theory may be positively impacted by the results of this research, due to the far-reaching implications for both mind and body.

Moss, Zahra Marie. "The Golden Treasures of Monte Alban: Mexican Representation and Exhibition Controversy, 1933-1936." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/242379.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1932, Alfonso Caso, a rising professor of anthropology and employee of the Mexican National Museum of Anthropology and History made a huge archeological discovery; a centuries old tomb in the ancient citadel of Monte Alban located in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. In the months that followed the discovery the find was excavated, cleaned, cataloged and put on display. Altogether the cache consisted of hundreds of objects made of gold, precious stone, sea shells and human remains. Dubbed the Monte Alban Treasure by its discoverer, the find soon became a worldwide sensation. Public interest in a travelling exhibition exacerbated demands for the treasures public display in the United States. This dissertation traces the discovery, exhibition and consequences of the display of Monte Alban Treasures in the United States following the end of the armed phase of the Mexican Revolution. I argue that as the Revolution was in full swing, the existing new leadeship used archeology and art to dictate the cultural monikers that represented the country after the civil war. Defining the national character, establishing a cohesive cultural history and developing a visual narrative that coalesced with the governments aspirations informed the basis of the social changes fomented between 1921-1936. I argue that a series of popular art and archeological shows in Mexico and the United States in the late 1920's primed audiences for a revolutionary re-interpretation of Mexico's past that integrated indigenous populations into the history of the nation. This narrative minimized the impact and influence of European colonial powers and instead focused upon emphasizing the origins of Mexico's independent cultural identity. The display of Monte Alban Treasures in Mexico and the United States between 1922 and 1934 was part of this emergent revolutionary rhetoric. This research project explores the popular audience responses to the exhibit, but also charges alleging that the artifacts selected for display were fabricated. This twist demonstrates some of the major problems associated with using art and archeological evidence to represent broader political agendas. In this case, the Mexican government appropriated the Monte Alban Treasures, assigned them a narrative of indigenous appreciation and inclusivity and used their subsequent display to promote this abroad. This project will show how science and art were not contradicting fields of study, but fused to forge the public Revolutionary identity of Mexicans in the mid twentieth century.

Abstract:
There is a need for fast and resource effective algorithms that can find people in need. This can be achieved using bio-inspired autonomous agents. One problem that is similar to the one of a rescue mission is Ants Nearby Treasure Search (ANTS). In this problem, a number of ants work together towards a common goal on a grid, for example finding a treasure. To make the problem more similar to a rescue mission, it is expanded to include multiple treasures. We name this problem Ants Nearby Treasures Search (ANTSS). ANTSS is solved using Parallel Diamond Search algorithm. We propose an addition to this solution. By changing the search origin we see if our algorithm performs better, mostly in cases where treasures are grouped up. Results show how changing the origin has a significant advantage in cases were treasures are grouped up. However, there is also huge disadvantages in general test cases.

Abstract:
Alain De Botton writes in The Architecture of Happiness, that “any object of design will give off an impression of the psychological and moral attitudes it supports.” Interpreting design then is done by understanding the attitudes of the designer, which either will or will not resonate with the viewer. I may consider the formal and conceptual merits of an object of design, but ultimately my attitudes determine whether the object will have resonance with me. These “attitudes” are, anthropologically speaking, values: what a person finds most good, proper, or desirable in life. Values are the key to the creation of objects of design that resonate. The purpose of this study is to gain insight into my values and refine their manifestation in my work. By defining those values, I can examine how my work might resonate with others.

Catenazzi, Nadia. "A study into electronic book design and production : hyper-book and the hyper-book builder." Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 1993. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=21224.

Full text
Abstract:
This work is concerned with research in the field of electronic publishing and, more particularly, of electronic books. It concentrates on an analysis of the stages of development of an electronic book from the acquisition of the source material to the actual use of electronic books, with particular attention to the interface design issues. The main objective of this research is to demonstrate the appropriateness of adopting the paper book metaphor for representing electronic books, which are specifically designed to be parts of an electronic library. In addition, these electronic books are produced semi-automatically using a flexible publishing environment. A model for an electronic book (hyper-book) and an environment which supplies tools for generating electronic books (hyper-book builder) have been defined and successively developed. Hyper-books are produced by importing electronic texts (in SGML or ASCII format) into an empty template, and by applying a number of tools in order to provide appropriate layout and reader services. Hyper-books incorporate hypertext features (e.g. history facilities and links), paper book features, and some other computer facilities (e.g. search functions). Design principles for hyper-books have been partially deduced from paper publishing and from experiments with electronic books. An application in the environmental domain (in particular, in the area of Global Change) was developed and used in order to evaluate the hyper-book system. The objectives of the evaluation were mainly to assess system usability and utility. An evaluation conducted by assigning a number of tasks to two different groups of subjects (computer experts and computer non-experts) has demonstrated that both groups achieved a good performance; therefore, computer expertise does not represent a significant aid in order to perform better or execute tasks quickly. These results lead to the conclusion that the system is easy to learn and use by everyone, therefore it is appropriate to employ the book metaphor.

Abstract:
Stångåstaden is a mortgage company owned by Linköping municipality. They have over the years contributed to a number of outdoor artworks all around their home properties. Since they have a very poor documentation of these artworks a photo book will be developed to showcase these artworks. Our job is tocreate a concept for this photo book as well as doing research of the art In order to create good and viable guidelines for the photo book one must first find out more bout photo books and how differtent motivies are portryed in thebest way. so the main thesis of this report ti to research how different types of photo books portray their motives and visuales information, then translate that into guidelines for an intresting informative and visually attractive photo book för stångostaden. To be able to answer the thesis a genre analysis was chosen as a method because it helps with the understanding of a specific genre and its different elements, as well as provides inspiration which suits this report very well. Before doing the genre analysis a literature study was conducted with the focus on relevance for image composition and book design in specific. With the literature study as a foundation a model for analysis was create on which the genre analysis was made. The genre analysis was done on five very different books chosen from the Swedish photographers associations yearly photo book award. As  a  result of the literature study and the genre analysis five different concept--‐ spreads were create to illustrated the whole final concept. These are a map for overview and division, close--‐ups for details, many pictures to show different sides, full site with specific purposes and environmental images for relations. More general guidelines for the concept are that every artwork is going to have at least one spread alone. All the pictures will be in colour in order to be able to create more effective contrasts in favour of the artwork. Furthermore it is important to work with composition, perspective and format to create balance and hierarchy to enhance each artwork.

Abstract:
Strict comparative analyses of the morphology of arachnid book lungs (Arachnida Lamarck, 1801 - Arthropoda: Chelicerata) were carried out in the present doctoral thesis using modern methods, resulting in a new perspective on arachnid phylogeny. Comparisons with potential aquatic sistergroups (Xiphosura and/or Eurypterida) and fossil scorpions give rise to the hypothesis of the unique terrestrialization of ancestors, which is common for all arachnids. Data from 200 Recent + 2 extinct scorpions, 16 whip spiders (Amblypygi), 17 whip scorpions (Thely-phonida), 1 schizomid (Schizomida), 1 extinct trigonotarbid (Trigonotarbida) and 1 outgroup - horseshoe crab (Xiphosura) are assembled into an illustrated catalogue of arachnid book lungs. Following the observations of these gradually differing cuticular structures the vast variation of book-lung fine structure across Arachnida requires unequivocal definition of characters and character states. Five characters are defined, which are assigned to distinct homologous book-lung structures: (1) the surface structure of the respiratory lamellae, (2) structure of the distal edges of the lamellae, (3) the posterior edge of the spiracle, (4) the anterior edge of the spiracle and (5) the structure of the wall lining the atrial chamber. Especially the book-lung characters 1-3 contain unexpected information, which helps resolve relationships within Scorpiones to a high degree, and characters 4 and 5 are of considerable importance for Uropygi s. lat. One sixth character (sensilla/pores) is mentioned, but sporadically examined. However, cuticular book-lung fine structure is studied using SEM, the gross morphology is reassessed using histological sectioning and 3D-reconstructions based on µCT. For investigations on trigonotabid fossils a new method yielding 3D-reconstructions from stacks of subsequent focal layers was developed.

Electronic media have lagged behind their paper progenitors in the clear, usable display of large bodies of information. New visual languages have been created for information display which exploit the computer's unique ability to render dynamic and three-dimensional typography. These languages demonstrate that the use of three dimensional form, expressive movement, visual focus and layering, in harmony with human perceptual abilities, improve navigation and contextual understanding of complex written documents. This thesis shows that graphic displays can be combined with physical interfaces to create interactions with purely typographic information that are rich, tactile and humane.

Abstract:
This report covers the methodology, research, and design process of my Thesis Project I: The Mixed Reality Book. The project is a proof-of-concept system that adds contextual periphery effects to regular paper books, using Spatial Augmented Reality. The intention is to enhance reading experiences within public libraries – amongst children and students. In this brief study we investigate how Projected Periphery can create, improve, and augment reading by manipulating the physical book, and the area around it, using projections. Throughout the study, I conduct design engagements, rapid prototyping, and workshops with the intention of identifying meaningful interactions. Two primary contexts of use are identified and analysed with an emphasis on developing usable design conventions and laying the foundation for a Mixed Reality Book system. The result is a working prototype, analysis of the research and challenges, and an exploration of how this technology could be shaped further and deployed.

Abstract:
This thesis is a collection of nine short stories about real people dealing with unreal problems. In one story, a small-town man answers a knock at his door, only to find three wisemen, who have followed a star and proclaimed him as their new messiah. In another, a reporter travels across the snowy length of Canada looking to interview people who have witnessed the Virgin Mary materialize above Toronto. Deranged Egyptologists, vampires with diseased blood, wacky witches, and unhappy mediums all inhabit tales whose landscapes span the distance between Chattanooga, Tennessee and the afterlife.

Abstract:
The history of the book in the West shows how new technologies and ways of reproduction have changed the book`s structure, and modified its form and relationship with the reader. The supremacy of the codex over the volumen (scroll) and Gutenberg`s movable type (the printing press) are examples of these revolutionary transformations. According to the French historian Roger Chartier, nowadays the electronic text is making the opposition between book and screen disappear, and fostering new writing forms and reading in digital media. Texts become different on the printed page and on the computer screen (as well as in many other electronic gadgets). This represents a book change, which includes, simultaneously, structure, organization, writing manners and appearance. Its further, represents a cultural transformation in the book form, reproduction, distribution and relationship with the reader. A virtual book exists only in cyberspace and in the reader`s mind. In Design, digital technology and hypermedia bring several possibilities and new thoughts about a book`s project. Its pages are converted in hybrid territories, where typography, image, sound and movement involve the reader during the reading action. This means a new concept and the revision of the book`s visual project. This research approaches book design, literature and the narrative forms developed for digital media reading. It deals with form and content, looking for new characteristics of the electronic book as a novelty, and tries to find out which one is surviving this change from print book to screen.

Hayes, Sam Alexander. "Martial the book poet : contextu(r)alising the Flavian poetry book." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/26157.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how the reader is invited to read the books of Martial’s Epigrams, arguing that the epigrammatist has arranged the poems in his libelli in a specific order that rewards a sequential reading of the text from start to finish. Instead of viewing Martial as an anthologist who collated a series of occasional poems for their later publication, the thesis demonstrates that the poet showed awareness of his epigrams’ position within a larger ‘contexture’, and that he primes the reader throughout the Epigrams to envisage the books as thematically unified wholes. By viewing the Epigrams as a text to be read from beginning to end, rather than a text to be excerpted and anthologised, one can read each epigram in the wider context of its book, and better appreciate that book’s structural unity. Chapter one introduces the issues at stake in how one reads a book of epigrams, and provides the thesis’ methodological approach. Special attention is paid to the phenomenology of reading as a hermeneutic act, drawing together approaches to the Epigrams from classical scholarship as well as from reception and comic book theories to detail the method of ‘cumulative reading’ employed in the thesis. The second chapter then examines how Martial characterises the lector studiosus in his text, and how this depicted reader acts as a model for the actual reader to follow in their own sequential reading of the Epigrams. Chapter three focuses on Epigrams 7, demonstrating that the opening poems of the book establish the emperor Domitian as a thematic centrepiece around whom the rest of the book’s themes cluster. The fourth chapter also examines book 7, demonstrating how two different uses of watery motifs develop their individual thematic unity across the book, while also linking themselves back to the book’s opening imperial cycle to craft an overarching structural unity for the libellus. Chapter five then gives an overview of the larger structure of the Epigrams, arguing that the paratextual prose prefaces in books 1, 2, 8, 9, and 12 reinforce the individuality of the books they precede as well as establishing their own place within the wider corpus. Overall, this thesis puts the epigrammatic libellus back into the context of late first century AD book culture, emphasising that Martial paid attention not only to his epigrams’ position within their own books, but also their place within the wider corpus.

Geng, Xin. "Limit order book resilience and cross impact limit order book model." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/67146/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comprises of five chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction on the existing literature about the optimal trading order execution problem, the concept of limit order book, market impact models and their underlying market microstructure. We will also provide some brief review on the regularity problem of market impact model and the resilience effect of the LOB market. Some notions about the limit order book trading will also be introduced in this chapter. The second chapter, a game theoretical model given by Rosu [74] is introduced and the same side and opposite side resilience are reinterpreted for this model. The solution structure of a Markov equilibrium of this model is obtained for the same side resilience by providing a rigourous mathematical analysis. We also provide a sufficient condition for the existence of real-valued solutions under this situation. We also reproduce the results in Rosu [74] about the opposite side resilience in this LOB model. In the third chapter, we extend the LOB market impact model in Obizhaeva and Wang [65] by introducing two sides resilience and a general LOB shape function. Two existing LOB market impact models are then replicated by our extended model, allowing the cross-impact resilience rate going to zero and infinity respectively. In the last two chapters, we conduct two applications of our extended market impact model. These two applications are able to help us study the optimal execution problem and the market regularity issues. We find out that the minimum cost of the zero-spread LOB model is a lower bound of the minimum cost of our extended market impact LOB model and those models with zero bid-ask spread have weaker regularity conditions than those with a non-zero bid-ask spread.

Abstract:
'Betting by the Book' details the steps taken in, and results obtained from, an examination of the processes followed, especially in Australia, of those persons who bet on thoroughbred horseracing. The work briefly describes the evolution of the practice of this form of gambling and details the extent of the activity in the Australian nation. Note is made of the obvious limited amount of attention previously given to the topic by academia. Using illustrations of the extent of the complexity and resulting uncertainty of outcome in selecting winning horses the study finds that the consequential behaviour of almost all those who bet is the adoption of a co-ordinated process of selection commonly referred to as a system. As hypothesised the study found three major categories, viz., logical, naive and superstitious. Sub-types of the three categories, devised as a part of the study, are listed and defined. Unexpectedly the work brought to attention the finding that most bettors, even those following logical systems, will, at times, adopt superstitious practices. Examples are provided of logical, yet simple, selection systems that could be beneficially adopted by those persons who would otherwise follow naive and superstitious systems of selection. Finally the study notes the considerable opportunities that exist for the education of bettors.
