Abstract This paper presents an overview of bird research carried out in the Borki Primeval Forest during the last 30 years. The Borki Primeval Forest can be considered as one of the most important forest bird sites in Poland. Its avifauna comprises 139 breeding species, including 11 rare and endangered species listed in the Polish Red Data Book of Animals as well as 30 species listed in Annex I of the EU Birds Directive. Despite its relatively small area, the Borki Primeval Forest holds at least 1% of Polish breeding population of as many as 12 bird species. For seven out of these species it

The SVD ethnologist/ethnographer mostly known as Paul Schebesta (1887-1967) was often introduced in Czechoslovakia as “our Czech” Pavel Šebesta. Querying origins, selves and homelands, his own and in his writings (ethnography/travelogues/fiction on “dwarfs” in the “primeval forest”), this essay traces the multiplicity/borderlands/nomadism of Schebesta/Šebesta, also in his relation to the “Other,” a concept/distinction/border that is thus destabilized or blurred. Snags (i.e., dead standing trees), and more particularly those of larger dimensions, are recognized as playing a major role in the maintenance of forest biodiversity. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of large snags in a primeval balsam fir forest in the Gaspé Peninsula (Quebec) and to compare them with those of an adjacent area composed of mature second-growth balsam fir stands. For snags ≥20 cm in diameter at breast height (DBH), mean density reached 51 snags/ha in the primeval forest and 24 snags/ha in the managed forest. The Białowieża Forest is an important biodiversity hotspot on a European scale, and therefore its preservation should have a high priority. However, forest management conducted over a large area of the forest, intensive logging, and elimination of dead trees pose serious threats to many species in the forest. The main aim of this study was to determine the species composition of spider assemblages inhabiting tree branches of the Białowieża Forest and to compare their species richness and the abundance of individuals (adults and juveniles) between managed and primeval stands. In view of actively discussed intensification of forest management, decreasing areas of natural forests and associated biological diversity, understanding the mechanisms of biogeocenoses recovery after disturbances is becoming more and more relevant. We studied the successional dynamics of middle taiga forest communities after first clear cut as compared to the natural dynamics of primeval forest communities in the control plots. Our specific objectives were to: 1) compare growing stock of forest stands (total values, distribution by tree species, variation during the observation period); 2) i

Fitness benefits of sociality increase individual survival and reproductive success through a complex network of social interactions. Kin selection theory predicts that individuals increase their inclusive fitness through altruistic behaviours directed towards kin. Thus, preferential social interactions with relatives lead to the emergence of kin structures in the social system. Cohesive social groups, female philopatry, and high reproductive output of wild boar creates conditions for cooperation through kin selection and make the species a good biological model for studying kin structures.
