Abstract:
The first Russian translation of J. D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye (1951) was produced in 1960 by Rita Rait-Kovaleva, a renowned translator of contemporary Western literature (English, French, German) in the Soviet Union. This essay examines Rait’s translation of The Catcher in the Rye in the context of the problem of censorship and translation, focusing on several instances of Rait’s translation of profanities and sex-related passages of The Catcher in the Rye. It demonstrates how the creative strategies of the translator not only helped her overcome censorship barriers but also transformed a foreign text into a new cultural model.

Abstract:
Gender aspects have been attracting linguistic attention for quite a while now, raising discussions about the so-called male and female languages. However, the effect of gender on translation remains understudied. This research featured expressive vocabulary in Jerome Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye and its Russian translations performed by Rita Rait-Kovaleva (1960) and Maxim Nemtsov (2008). The objective was to determine the effect of gender on translation. The authors believe that the translator’s gender may affect literary images and modify the author’s message. They conducted a comparative analysis of the way translators of different genders transferred stylistically-marked and emotional vocabulary, colloquialisms, slang, and jargon into Russian. The standard methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization, systematization, and description revealed some differences in the translation styles, the image of the main character, translation pragmatics, and Salinger’s rather remarkable style. Rita Rait-Kovaleva seemed to soften some harsh statements, neutralize emotional aspects, and avoid colloquial vocabulary by using equivalents, which did not quite fall into the stylistic framework. Her Holden Caulfield turned out to more educated, intelligent, confident, emotional, and gentle. Maxim Nemtsov adhered to a single strategy: he did his best not to deviate from the original. In his attempt to preserve colloquialisms and substandard vocabulary, he often gave neutral words stylistic markers, emotional coloring, or a negative connotation. However, he managed to maintain the original syntax.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to examine in what way the protagonist of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield, represses his own sexuality and how this affects his relationship to men and women. With the aid of psychoanalytic theory and gender theory, the essay strives to determine how Holden Caulfield relates to traditional gender roles, the causes of Holden Caulfield’s repressed sexuality, and how Holden Caulfield’s repressed sexuality manifests itself.

Abstract:
The character of Holden Caulfield can be sincerely identified as an ornament. An ornament, such as a flower vase in an impeccable table, or a beautiful desk in the middle of a study room delicately decorated. But for this purposes, Holden Caulfield is a ornament of a society that is not aware of its existence or his importance. An ornament within his family, that looks more like an award cabinet than a loving Christmas postcard.

Abstract:
This master's thesis examines the three German translations of J. D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye (1951): Der Mann im Roggen, published in 1954 by Diana Verlag and translated by Irene Muehlon; Der Fänger im Roggen, published in 1962 and translated by Annemarie and Heinrich Böll, and Der Fänger im Roggen, published in 2003 and translated by Eike Schönfeld (both published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch). In recourse to polysystem theory, it is shown how translational differences can be explained through the translations' cultural and literary contexts.

First, polysystem theory's most important terms are explained in regard to the research objectives. In doing so, the existing research on German translations of Salinger is summarized. Second, with the help of an analysis by Irene Hinrichsen, the latest translation is compared to its predecessors in regard to language and stylistics. This analysis demonstrates that, unlike the earlier translations, Schönfeld's version retains nearly all of the American original's stylistic particularities and extreme content.

Then, building on the result of the linguistic-stylistic analysis, the societal and literary contexts of the three translations are summarized in order to find possible explanations for the translational differences. It becomes clear that the alleviative tendencies of the two earlier translations are very much in tune with the cautious approach to morality of the West Germany of the 1950s. In contrast, the latest translation was produced in a liberal, youthful environment that reflects a more tolerant German society. Therefore, it makes sense to trace the differences between the three translations back to their differing contexts.

Partindo de uma distinção entre tempo objectivamente medido e tempo subjectivo, pretende-se dar conta da importância da questão temporal em The Great Gatsby e The Catcher in the Rye. Num primeiro momento são analisadas questões ligadas à forma narrativa, nomeadamente a cronologia dos acontecimentos narrados e a importância do tempo atmosférico. Seguidamente, é analisada a visão do tempo das diferentes personagens. Tudo irá convergir na percepção de que a concepção do tempo de uns e outros tem implicações directas no seu destino: sobrevivência ou colapso.

Full text
Abstract:
LAVA-GAP experiments are in progress to investigate the performance of the in-vessel core catcher using alumina melt as a corium simulant. The hemispherical in-vessel core catcher made of carbon steel was installed inside the lower head vessel with a uniform gap of 10mm. Until now, two types of the in-vessel core catcher were used in this study. The first one is a single layered in-vessel core catcher without an internal coating of the LAVA-GAP-2 test, and the other one is a two layered in-vessel core catcher with a 0.5mm-thick ZrO2 internal coating of the LAVA-GAP-3 test. Current LAVA-GAP experimental results indicate that an internally coated in-vessel core catcher has better thermal performance compared with an uncoated in-vessel core catcher. Metallurgical inspections on the test specimens of the LAVA-GAP-3 test have been performed to examine the performance of the coating material and the base carbon steel. Although the base carbon steel had experienced severe thermal attack to the extent that the microstructures were changed and re-crystallization occurred, the carbon steel showed stable and pure chemical compositions without any oxidation and interaction with the coating layer. In terms of the material aspects, these metallurgical inspection results suggest that the ZrO2 coating performed well.

Full text
Abstract:
The strategy of the European Pressurized Water Reactor (EPR) to avoid severe accident conditions is based on the improved defense-in-depth approaches of the French “N4” and the German “Konvoi” plants. In addition, the EPR takes measures, at the design stage, to drastically limit the consequences of a postulated core-melt accident. The latter requires a strengthening of the confinement function and a significant reduction of the risk of short- and long-term containment failure. Scenarios with potentially high mechanical loads and large early releases like: high-pressure RPV failure, global hydrogen detonation, and energetic steam explosion must be prevented. The remaining low-pressure sequences are mitigated by dedicated measures that include hydrogen recombination, sustained heat removal out of the containment, and the stabilization of the molten core in an ex-vessel core catcher located in a compartment lateral to the pit. The spatial separation protects the core catcher from loads during RPV failure and, vice versa, eliminates concerns related with its unintended flooding during power operation. To make the relocation of the melt into the core catcher scenario-independent and robust against the uncertainties associated with in-vessel molten pool formation and RPV failure, the corium is temporarily retained, accumulated and conditioned in the pit during interaction with a sacrificial concrete layer. Spreading of the accumulated molten pool is initiated by penetrating a concrete plug in the bottom. The increase in surface-to-volume ratio achieved by the spreading process strongly enhances quenching and cool-down of the melt after flooding. The required water is passively drained from the IRWST. After availability of the containment heat removal system the steam from the boiling pool is re-condensed by sprays. The CHRS can also optionally cool the core catcher directly, which, in consequence, establishes a sub-cooled pool near-atmospheric pressure levels in the containment. The described concept rests on a large experimental knowledge base which covers all main phenomena involved, including melt interaction with structural material, melt spreading, melt and quenching, as well as the efficacy of the core catcher cooling. Besides giving an overview of the EPR core melt mitigation concept, the paper summarizes its R&D bases and describes which conclusions have been drawn from the various experimental projects and how these conclusions are used in the validation of the EPR concept.

Abstract:
Considering a reasonable range of core meltdown accidents that can be postulated for GenIV sodium fast reactors, good safety margins exist for corium confinement and cooling inside the reactor vessel. Coolable conditions can be reached with the adoption of an ad-hoc device in the lower plenum, i.e. core catcher, capable to intercept the downward motion of the molten material and assure its cooling. Such device has to be designed to withstand to extreme thermal-mechanical conditions that rise as consequence of the large mechanical energy release and high temperature of molten corium. As this study has been carried out in the frame of the Collaborative Project on European Sodium Fast Reactor (CP ESFR) of the 7th Framework Programme Euratom, on the basis of the postulated accident conditions assumed for a reference 1500 MWe pool-type sodium fast reactor, the present work provides a preliminary analysis of the thermal response of a possible core catcher placed within the vessel. The dynamic thermal behaviour of the corium-structure-coolant system is analyzed with the computer code CORIUM-2D, an original simulation tool developed by RSE - Ricerca Sul Sistema Energetico, with the aim to assess the thermal interaction among corium, structures and coolant under severe accident conditions in both Light Water Reactors (LWRs) and Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactors (LMFBRs). The results of the numerical simulations show that the steady-state coolable configuration of core debris and the structural integrity of main containment structures can be reached in a number of partial core meltdown situations.
