Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to examine in what way the protagonist of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield, represses his own sexuality and how this affects his relationship to men and women. With the aid of psychoanalytic theory and gender theory, the essay strives to determine how Holden Caulfield relates to traditional gender roles, the causes of Holden Caulfield’s repressed sexuality, and how Holden Caulfield’s repressed sexuality manifests itself.

Abstract:
The character of Holden Caulfield can be sincerely identified as an ornament. An ornament, such as a flower vase in an impeccable table, or a beautiful desk in the middle of a study room delicately decorated. But for this purposes, Holden Caulfield is a ornament of a society that is not aware of its existence or his importance. An ornament within his family, that looks more like an award cabinet than a loving Christmas postcard.

Abstract:
This master's thesis examines the three German translations of J. D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye (1951): Der Mann im Roggen, published in 1954 by Diana Verlag and translated by Irene Muehlon; Der Fänger im Roggen, published in 1962 and translated by Annemarie and Heinrich Böll, and Der Fänger im Roggen, published in 2003 and translated by Eike Schönfeld (both published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch). In recourse to polysystem theory, it is shown how translational differences can be explained through the translations' cultural and literary contexts.

First, polysystem theory's most important terms are explained in regard to the research objectives. In doing so, the existing research on German translations of Salinger is summarized. Second, with the help of an analysis by Irene Hinrichsen, the latest translation is compared to its predecessors in regard to language and stylistics. This analysis demonstrates that, unlike the earlier translations, Schönfeld's version retains nearly all of the American original's stylistic particularities and extreme content.

Then, building on the result of the linguistic-stylistic analysis, the societal and literary contexts of the three translations are summarized in order to find possible explanations for the translational differences. It becomes clear that the alleviative tendencies of the two earlier translations are very much in tune with the cautious approach to morality of the West Germany of the 1950s. In contrast, the latest translation was produced in a liberal, youthful environment that reflects a more tolerant German society. Therefore, it makes sense to trace the differences between the three translations back to their differing contexts.

Abstract:

The aim of this essay was to show that the theme of how a troubled young man in a crisis who is saved by the love of a little girl is central in J.D Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye, as well as in his short story “For Esmé - with Love and Squalor”. Furthermore, the argument was that there is a strong kinship between the protagonists of both stories as well as the little girl, thereby supporting the existing opinion of critics that Salinger is a writer who returns to favored themes and characters.

Abstract:
Reading The Catcher in the Rye as dystopian fiction requires critical responsibility to evaluate the ethicality of the protagonist's sense of others and self, to assess the moral nature of the novel's dystopian world, and to evaluate the protagonist's agency or capacity to change his world or himself. The novel presents a multifaceted dystopia existing on multiple planes in the social dogma, the reality of the presented world, and Holden's mind before and after his paradigm shift. The dystopian aspects present in the novel highlight basic ideological systems as well as agency and action within the structure. The dystopian elements of the novel alter standards for ethical judgment. The ethical discussion shifts to focus on the possibility of agency, ability to change, and perceptions. Using these standards shows the dystopian-saturated world and reveals Holden as a changed character who transitions from unethical, complicit victim to ethical agent. The Catcher in the Rye provides a case study of corrupted societal structure and the possible outcomes for readers and critics. The dystopian genre expands through the inclusion of The Catcher in the Rye and extends the standards for ethical analysis to other dystopian novels.

Abstract:
In this thesis I aim to analyze the modern classic book The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger (1951) in an attempt to determine whether one can categorize it as a Young Adult book or not. The novel itself was published as an adult book, but my research shows that it gets both mentioned and used as an example as a novel that has influenced Young Adult literature since its publication. Furthermore, it features many of the criteria that define Young Adult literature. The aforementioned criteria are as follows: death, drugs, war, sex, alcohol, politics, suffering, gender roles, (sexual) liberation, and absent or unaware parents and adults. In addition, Young Adult literature usually uses a first-person perspective, which has led to discussions about whether the said narrator can be trusted or not. The Catcher in the Rye demonstrates many of these criteria – death, war, sex, alcohol, suffering, and parental figures and their roles. In my analysis, I focus on death, parents and the narration, specifically whether or not Holden Caulfield can be classified as an unreliable narrator. By researching the history of Young Adult literature – when it first appears as a genre and how the events come about – as well as looking into the criteria that defines the genre, I perform my analysis by doing a close reading of The Catcher in the Rye. By using my newfound facts, I discuss whether or not the novel can be categorized as Young Adult literature.

ABSTRACT: The present Dissertation constitutes an applied Psychoanalysis exercise to J. D.´s Salinger masterpiece “The Catcher in the Rye”. This book entails a powerful story about the internal conflicts of an adolescent, and the present analysis seeks to bring to light new possible meanings of the story through a psychoanalytic reading and interpretative approach. The problem of adolescence is adressed to what concerns the demand for an identitary construction and the concomitant demand for the place of the individual self in the world, and its constant confrontation between the internal conflicts lived and the surrounding reality, or is, in the relationship of the main character with his social and family environment.

Abstract:
Jerome David Salinger´s Holden Caulfield, the protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye, is seen through the lens of psychoanalytical literary criticism. He is a complex character, who is torn between his dreams and emotions. He is often depicted as a liar, a rebel who drops out of school or as a depressed young man who is admitted into care for his mental problems. Some of these issues are hidden in the vernacular teenage language. The image of Holden as having a personality that is in line with narcissism is therefore discussed. The intention is to question whether or not Holden shows symptoms of a narcissistic personality. Contrary to the personality traits that some critics have described, this essay focuses on the sides of Holden´s personality that show empathy, generosity and love, despite the traumas of his childhood.

Abstract:
By discussing the ethical issues with banned and censored literature, students can learn how to approach a text written in different contexts. The essay brings to light the triggered instances, which lead to banning The Catcher in the Rye in American schools in the 1950s. Using a cultural studies approach allows an in-depth investigation of the patterns in the triggering instances and leads to findings of possible reasons for ban- and censorship. These instances, sums up to; unrealistic protagonist, vulgar language, blasphemy and a pessimistic and depressing point of view. To introduce these instances into a Swedish classroom can hopefully bring an insight into another historical time and another context, to better understand the Swedish context, e.g. democratic values as well as freedom of speech.

Abstract:
This research is connected with syntax and comparative translation. It is about the problem of the dependence of the word order changing on the actual division of a sentence in translation of English literary text into Russian. The relevance of this work is connected with the insufficient knowledge of grammatical transformations and the actual division of sentences in modern translation studies, as well as with the lack of empirical material in comparative syntax. The object of the research is syntactic transformations, and the subject is the features of using syntactic transformations during translating from English into Russian. The purpose is the theme-rheumatic interpretation of syntactic transformations-permutations in the translation of J. D. Salinger's novel “The Catcher in the Rye” from English into Russian. The theme-rheumatic analysis of the original English text by J. D. Salinger and its Russian into English translations by R. Rait-Kovaleva and M. Nemtsov showed that during translating English monorems with rheme at the beginning of the sentence, the translator usually uses the transpositions: the transfer of rheme to the end of the sentence.
Д. Сэлинджера “The Catcher in the Rye”. Д. Сэлинджера «The Catcher in the Rye» и его русскоязычных переводов, выполненных Р.

Abstract:
Ce mémoire de maîtrise propose une étude détaillée des répercussions sociales et psychologiques des évènements traumatiques sur le développement de l’enfant en utilisant trois Bildungsromane importants, The Catcher in the Rye de J.D. Salinger, The Outsiders de S.E. Hinton et The Perks of Being a Wallflower de Stephen Chbosky.
This thesis examines the psychological and social repercussions of trauma on a child’s maturation process using three landmark novels of the Bildungsroman genre, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, and Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Grounding my analysis on the findings of trauma theorists Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman, Ronald Granofsky, and Dominick LaCapra, and psychiatrists Dori Laub and Judith Lewis Herman, I demonstrate that trauma can occupy two contradictory but inextricably linked functions in the maturation process, that of both hindering and catalyzing a child’s coming-of-age. I demonstrate that Holden Caulfield, Ponyboy Curtis, and Charlie all display behaviours that suggest the paralyzing nature of trauma and its initial ability to prevent the child from growing up. I then argue that trauma, or the acceptance of one’s traumatic past, has the potential to accelerate the maturation process. My study also highlights the importance of the testimonial process in the recovery from trauma and the character's ensuing maturity. Because of the omnipresence of testimony in young people’s literature, its ramifications and implications are explored in each chapter of this thesis. Through the use of close reading, I study each work independently, evaluate each character’s individual response to trauma, and establish the thematic vocabulary and the interlinks that allow a conversation between the three novels. Although the studied works propose different types of traumatic negotiation and response, each novel is dialogically linked with the other. This thesis offers new readings of each novel, while establishing insightful comparisons between the three works. The intent of this thesis is therefore to contribute to the assessment of each narrative and to a general understanding of the role of trauma in young people’s literature.

This work intends to discuss the emergence of a new category of adolescence invented in the United States of the post-war: the teenage. This new age of life is related to the context of economic prosperity that the country experiences during the 1940 and 1950 decades and is therefore directly connected to consumption. It differs from other youths previously existing or contemporary to it, and the teenage is broad itself. While a part of the teenagers reproduces the american way of life, another starts to question this lifestyle. One of the first teens to do that and gain a lot of visibility is Holden Caulfield, literary character created by J. D. Salinger in the novel The catcher in the rye, published in 1951. The story is set in New York, the city that starts to occupy a prominent place in the artistic, financial and cultural fields on the 20th century. The work discusses the relationships between the book and the city, the city and the teenage, and the relationships between text and context.
Salinger no romance The catcher in the rye, publicado em 1951.

Abstract:

Using the Standard-k-e-turbulence model and assuming an initial state of a motionless superheated melt several large convection rolls will establish within the melt pool. The temperatures at the surface do not sink to a solidification level due to the enhanced convection heat transfer. The temperature gradients at the surface are relatively flat while there are steep gradients at the ground where the no slip condition is applied. But even at the ground no solidification temperatures are observed. Although the problem in the ANSYS-calculations is handled two-dimensional and not three-dimensional like in the finite-volume-codes, there are no fundamental deviations to the results of the other codes.

Brooks, Ashley Meredith. "Allelopathy in Rye (Secale cereale)." NCSU, 2008. http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/theses/available/etd-10242008-090411/.

Full text
Abstract:
Allelopathy is an ecological phenomenon in which chemicals produced by and released from a plant affect the germination or growth of another plant. A possible exploitation of allelopathy is the use of allelopathic cover crops for weed management. Organic farming systems can utilize allelopathy as an alternative to synthetic herbicides and conventional farming can reduce reliance upon pre-emergence herbicides. Rye (Secale cereale) is a cover crop species known to be allelopathic to many weeds. In addition to allelopathic activity, rye is a successful cover crop because of prolific biomass, high germinability and winter hardiness. The objective of this research was to investigate the potential to develop a rye cultivar with increased allelopathy through a conventional breeding approach. A population of 150 half-sib families of rye was grown in two North Carolina locations. Above ground tissue was utilized to assess rye allelopathic activity. To assess allelopathy in the population, we aimed to develop a greenhouse bioassay which utilized a rye incorporated soil media and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus) as the indicator species. It is necessary to identify a screening protocol to quantify variation in allelopathic activity and to identify high performing lines. The greenhouse bioassay was fast, inexpensive and able to screen the large number of genotypes in the rye population. Results of redroot pigweed fresh weight biomass were reproducible and were utilized to estimate genetic parameters for allelopathy in the rye population. Estimates of genetic variation, genotype x environment interaction and narrow sense heritability help plant breeders develop an appropriate breeding program for the trait of interest. The estimates also give an idea of the rapidity at which progress can be made with selection. Genetic variation for rye allelopathy was not significant across locations but was significant within each location. Redroot pigweed fresh weight biomass was normally distributed indicating that allelopathy in rye is a quantitative trait. Heritability estimates were low on a per-plot basis and moderately low on an entry mean basis. A petri dish bioassay was also utilized to estimate genetic parameters for allelopathy in rye. Redroot pigweed germination and root length measures were utilized to quantify allelopathic activity. Genetic variation was not significant across locations for germination or root length. Analysis of variance within each location detected variation among the genotypes grown at the Kinston location but not at the Clayton location. Measures of redroot pigweed germination and root length were normally distributed. Heritability estimates were low on a per-plot basis and on an entry mean basis. This study demonstrates that allelopathy in rye is under genetic control and that it is a quantitative trait. Results suggest that a conventional breeding approach may be used for the development of a highly allelopathic rye cultivar.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present work aims to better understand which are the targets of aluminium (Al) in plants, and contribute to a better understanding of the tolerance mechanisms present in genotypes with high Al tolerance. Al is a major constituent of the soil and become bioavailable in soils with low pH. In such cases, exposure to Al adversely affects plant growth and leads to a decrease in production. These facts are especially evident in crops and exposure to Al is a major reason for reduction in crops production. Chapter I present a general review about Al toxicity in plants, pointing out their main targets. In addition, also presents the mechanisms of resistance, including external and internal Al-detoxification, shown in different species. Chapter II focuses on short term Al exposure in two species of cereals: Triticum aestivum L. and Secale cereal L., having always used one Al-tolerant and one Al-sensitive genotype for each species. This chapter is divided into three studies: In Chapter II.1 is enhanced the effect of exposure to 185μM of Al in the nutrient balance in wheat. It was found that in both genotypes (sensitive and tolerant) the profile of macro and micronutrients changed, with a negative interference on the level of P, Mg and K. Also, presents differences in endoderm differentiation depending on the degree of tolerance / sensitivity of the genotype. In Chapter II.2 a more comprehensive view of the effects of exposure to 185 μM Al in wheat is presented. This section includes physiological, structural, cytological and genotoxic effects. For the first time is demonstrated that the cell cycle progression is differently regulated depending on the tolerance / sensitivity of the genotype, and that even in differentiated root zones Al exposure leads to callose deposition. Chapter II.3 focuses on the effects of 1.1mm Al exposure in rye, in a very broad perspective. It is presented nutritional imbalances observed mainly in sensitive genotype and the Al translocation to shoots in the same genotype. It is also referred the different behaviour of both genotypes in relation to cell cycle, differentiation of endodermis, root growth, carbohydrate reserves, among others. All that points to well-defined strategies taken up by the tolerant genotype, in order to minimize the action of Al in roots. Chapter III focuses in long-term Al exposure. Two rye genotypes with different Al tolerance were exposed to 1.11 mM and 1.85 mM Al during 21 days, having been used two sampling points (15 and 21 days). This chapter is divided into two studies: In Chapter III. 1, are analyse the antioxidant mechanisms (leaves and roots) in response to Al exposure, with particular focus on the ascorbateglutathione cycle. Al exposure leaded to oxidative stress and to changes in the activity of antioxidant enzymes and in the content of non-enzymatic antioxidants. Is demonstrated that the two organs have different responses to Al exposure and that the ability to survive in environments rich in Al depends on the effectiveness of the antioxidant response. Furthermore, the response of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle seems to be dependent on organ type, Al-tolerance and time of Al-exposure. Chapter III. 2 analyze the effects of Al-exposure in photosynthesis. It is presented that Al negatively affects the photosynthetic rate in both genotypes, however the Al-induced alterations on gas exchange parameters and in Calvin cycle are genotype dependent. In this chapter, is demonstrated that Al induce earlier damages in the sensitive genotype, but both genotypes showed long-term susceptibility to Al. Finally, in Chapter IV the general conclusions of the present PhD Thesis are presented.

Abstract:
Malting of rye and use of rye malts presents several challenges to maltsters and brewers, like the lack of a hull and dense packing in steep. While, empirical evidence shows that rye genotypes differ in malting and brewing performance and flavor, there is little published information on the malting of rye or the malt quality attributes of rye genotypes. The objective was to evaluate laboratory micro-malting conditions that could be used in quality screening. Parameters included germination time, moisture and kernel size. Wort arabinoxylan and phenolic acid content were determined in addition to standard malt quality parameters. In general, high extract and lower viscosity were achieved by malting for at least 4 days at 45-48% moisture. However, some commercial maltsters indicated the difficulty of handling of germinating rye at high moisture levels. As such, 5 days of germination at 45% moisture is recommend for future evaluation of rye cultivars.

Abstract:
Increased consciousness of the environmental problems has aroused people’s interest of renewable energy systems, especially the application of green features in buildings. The demand for air conditioning / cooling in domestic and non-domestic buildings is rising throughout the world; this increases the reliance on conventional fuels and the global warming effect from greenhouse gas emissions. Passive cooling and energy efficient design can substantially reduce reliance on fuel based heating and cooling. Passive and Hybrid Downdraught Cooling, in different forms, is now technically viable in many parts of the world. This has been established through a combination of research projects. In some hot arid regions, a major part of the energy consumed consists of air-conditioning requirements. Alternative methods, using passive cooling techniques, can assist in reducing the conventional energy consumption in buildings. Evaporative cooling, which can be tracked back several hundreds of years in ancient Egypt and Persia [1–3], is one of the most effective strategies, because of the enormous latent heat needed for evaporation of water. Green features are architectural features used to mitigate migration of various air-borne pollutants and transmission of air from outside to indoor environment in an advantageous way [9]. The reduction of fossil fuel consumption and the associated decrease in greenhouse gas emissions are vital to combat global warming and this can be accomplished, in part, by the use of natural ventilation. To assess the performance of several innovative cooling systems devices and to develop improved models for more established technology, quantitative measurement of output was necessary. This was achieved in this study by the development of simply constructed low energy cooling systems which were calibrated by the innovative use of wind and water as a source. These devices were found to be consistent and accurate in measuring the temperature and cooling load from a number of devices. There were some problems in the original evaporative units. Therefore, a number of modifications have to be made to enhance the systems performance. The novel Windcatcher – PEC cooling system was assessed and different cooling loads were achieved.

Ogutu, Maurice Okendo. "Developing methods of strip cropping cucumbers with rye/vetch." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37220.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research carried out in 1998 and 1999 was to develop methods for strip cropping of cucumbers with rye/vetch and black plastic mulch. Effects of planting methods, weed control measures, and cover crop management techniques on pest and beneficial insects, petiole sap nitrate-nitrogen, soil moisture, yields and economic viability were assessed. Four treatments, namely cucumber direct seeded in black plastic mulch on tilled bare ground (conventional); cucumber direct seeded in black plastic mulch laid over incorporated rye/vetch residue; cucumber direct seeded into no-till rolled rye/vetch; and seedlings transplanted into no- till rolled rye/vetch, were evaluated in a randomized complete block design. Weeds were controlled in half the plot by critical manual weeding and pre-emergence herbicides applied in the other half in all treatments except the conventional system. Three-week interval staggered plantings of buckwheat to provide flowers for adult beneficial insects were also evaluated. Results obtained indicate that rye/vetch habitat is more attractive to beneficial insects than cucumber beetles before rolling or flail mowing. There were higher densities of adult Diptera (an indicator for Tachinid parasitoids) in both years and of Pennsylvania leatherwings in 1999 in plots with rye/vetch than in plots with rye only before planting. Preferential attraction to adult Diptera was not found after planting with no differences in cumulative densities between no-till and black plastic mulch plots after rolling or flail mowing. However, adult Diptera densities were positively correlated with cucumber yield, higher densities of cucumber beetles occurred in black plastic mulch than in no-till plots in both years, and bacterial wilt, transmitted by cucumber beetles, was reduced in no-till in 1999. Similarly, rye/vetch habitat plots had a higher diversity of Carabidae species (in both habitat areas and crop rows) before rolling or flail mowing, and higher densities of Carabidae (in habitat areas), Staphylinidae (in both habitat areas and crop rows) and spiders (in crop rows) after rolling or flail mowing. Black plastic mulch plots with flail mowed, incorporated rye/vetch residues had higher petiole sap nitrate-nitrogen and higher early season cucumber plant dry weights than in conventional plots; later in the season, the highest petiole sap nitrate-nitrogen occurred in no-till plots. No-till had higher marketable cucumber yield than plastic systems. The profitability of these production systems depended more on differences in marketable yield than on cost differences. The plastic with incorporated rye/vetch and no-till transplant systems were more profitable during early harvests in late July, while no- till direct seeded and transplant systems were more profitable from early August onwards. The three-week interval staggered planting of buckwheat led to conservation of beneficial insects, and the second and third seeded buckwheat flowering periods coincided with the period vetch had lost flowers.

Polyploidization is a remarkable driving force in plant evolution, where hybridization and chromosome doubling result in huge genomic stress. Deeper knowledge about parental genomes behaviour in a hybrid nucleus and on processes underlying genetic and epigenetic modifications induced by polyploidization is essential to understand such evolutive process. Using triticale as model species we evaluated the impact of polyploidization through molecular and cytological approaches. Genomic rearrangements involving retrotransposons and microsatellites related sequences include both repetitive and coding sequences, and revealed a preferential loss of rye-origin bands. Chromosome distribution of such marker sequences demonstrated moreover enrichment in heterochromatic domains. Intensification of rye genome rearrangements was also disclosed in wheat lines with disomic additions of rye chromosomes, probably due to unbalanced genomic constitution. An integrative review of genomic modulation evaluated in Triticeae hybrid/polyploidy species unravelled furthermore higher restructuring of larger parental genomes, emphasizing the importance of genome size homogenization. Epigenetic analysis of nucleolar dominance in wheat addition line with rye nucleolar chromosomes revealed an unexpected up-regulation of ribosomal genes from wheat-origin, suggesting that mutual and opposite expression patterns modifications are induced by genome interactions.

Abstract:
Limited photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) can reduce interseeded cover crop growth in corn (Zea mays L.). Two experiments in North Dakota evaluated the effect that hybrid relative maturity (RM), row width, and cover crop planting date have on cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) and winter camelina [Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz.] establishment when interseeded into 80 and 89 RM hybrids at V7 and R4 growth stages in 56- and 76 cm corn row widths. Cover crop biomass was typically less than 100 kg ha-1. In the following spring larger amounts of PAR beneath the 80 RM hybrid increased cover crop biomass by 20.8 kg ha-1. Cover crop biomass tended to be greater in the 76 cm row width but was not significantly different from the 56 cm width. Cover crops decreased residual soil nitrate by 6.0 kg ha-1 in the fall and by 15.6 kg ha-1 in the spring.
