Abstract:
This chapter surveys the radical Anglican contribution to the wider Sixties reframing of modernity as intrinsically anti-authoritarian. In the 1940s and 1950s, it had been widely assumed that authority-led cooperation was a necessary feature of advanced, ‘civilized’ societies: even in 1963 and 1964, Wilson’s successful ‘white heat’ election campaign presupposed the existence of an authoritative technocracy. From the late 1950s, however, Anglican radicals drew on their readings of Christian eschatology to suggest that the future would necessarily be anti-authoritarian. Variations on this eschatological logic also suggested that modernity was necessarily atheistic, and/or in desperate need of an anti-authoritarian spirituality. These various Anglican discourses made a significant contribution to the wider Sixties reframing of modernity as necessarily anti-authoritarian, which achieved cultural dominance in the mid-1960s, and which was an increasingly enacted feature of British social life in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Hindmarsh, D. Bruce. The Spirit of Early Evangelicalism. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190616694.001.0001.

Abstract:
The Spirit of Early Evangelicalism sheds new light on the nature of evangelical religion by locating its rise with reference to those consequential changes in Anglo-American society we now routinely acknowledge with the terms Modernity, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment. Bringing together a wide range of sources, the book makes meaningful connections between the Protestant evangelical awakening and the history of science, law, art, and literature in the eighteenth century. There was a profound turn toward nature and the authority of natural knowledge in each of these discourses and a more democratic public sphere available for debating contemporary concerns. In this modern context, evangelicals forcefully pressed their agenda for “true religion,” believing it was still possible to experience “the life of God in the soul of man.” The results were dramatic and disruptive. This book provides a fresh perspective, and presents new research, on the religious thought of leading figures such as John Wesley and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, and Jonathan Edwards, but it also traces the significance of evangelical spirituality for elites and non-elites across multiple genres including not only theology, but also natural and moral philosophy, poetry, painting, literature, and music. Viewing devotion, culture, and ideas together, it is possible to see the advent of evangelicalism as a significant new episode in the history of Christian spirituality.

Bennett, Judith, and Ruth Karras, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Women and Gender in Medieval Europe. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199582174.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book maps out what we now firmly know—and what we are just beginning to know--after four decades of scholarship on women and gender in medieval Europe. Medieval gender rules seem both foreign and familiar today. Medieval people understood religion, law, love, marriage, and sexual identity in distinctive ways that compel us today to understand women and gender as changeable, malleable, and unyoked from constraints of nature or biology. Yet some medieval views are echoed in modern traditions, and those echoes tease out critical tensions of continuity and change in gender relations. The essays collected here also speak to interpretative challenges common to all fields of women’s and gender history—that is, how best to uncover the experiences of ordinary people from archives formed mainly by and about elite males, and how to combine social histories of lived experiences with cultural histories of gendered discourses and identities. The collection focuses on western Europe in the Middle Ages but essays also offer some consideration of medieval Islam and Byzantium. The essays range widely and are gathered together under seven themes: Christian, Jewish and Muslim thought; law in theory and practice; domestic life and material culture; labor, land, and economy; bodies and sexualities; gender and holiness; and the interplay of continuity and change over the medieval millennium.
