Abstract:
The rise of the American motion picture corresponds to the influx of immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe. Just as many of these immigrants initially settled in East Coast and Midwest cities, both movies and movie audiences emerged there as an urban phenomenon. Rather than view this phenomenon only in terms of the images that films of this era offered, this chapter proposes to move beyond a “reflection paradigm” of film history. Of course, film texts reflected immigrant, ethnic, and racial identities. But these identities also existed beyond the text, across movies and movie-going, and embedded within diffuse, multiple, and overlapping networks of imagined relationships. Using Bakhtin’s concept of the chronotope, this chapter recounts some preliminary case studies involving race, ethnicity, and immigration to explore how future research in this area might probe the cultural practices of movie-going among diverse audiences during the first half of the twentieth century.

Madar, Vered. Where is Paradise? Place and Time in the Memoirs of Women from Yemen. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190912628.003.0012.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how time and place are shaped in memoirs written by women from Yemen. More specifically, it considers the ways in which the women depict their birthplace and the transition from Yemen to Israel, and how their narratives are influenced by the larger narrative of the Yemenite Jewish community. The focus is on books published in the last thirty years by Yemeni-born women who immigrated to Israel in the 1940s and 1950s. The chapter shows that the Yemenite women’s memoirs are an illustration of the so-called biblical chronotope; they often portray Yemen as a garden of Eden and recast Jews of Yemen as biblical Jews. It also discusses the nostalgia applied by memoirists who cast Yemen as a biblical paradise, describing it as subversive nostalgia. Finally, it argues that the memoirs constitute a range of views, motivations, and forces that operate in the field of communal memory.

Walton, Jeremy F. Fashioning the Neo-Ottoman Chronotope of Istanbul. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190658977.003.0006.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 extends the spatial and temporal concerns of chapters 3 and 4 by examining the “restorative nostalgia” that marks Sunni NGOs’ neo-Ottoman image of Istanbul. Following an excursion through a humble neighborhood of the city, it describes the restoration of an Ottoman-era madrasa on the part of a Nur institution. After this, the presentation telescopes outward to discuss how a variety of Sunni NGOs seek to reinscribe Istanbul within a broader, globalized topography of Muslim belonging and within the ummah (the universal community of Muslims) by foregrounding the city’s Ottoman heritage. Finally, the chapter addresses the dilemmas and frustrations that the neo-Ottoman chronotope of the city creates for Alevis, who cannot draw on nostalgia for the imperial past in the same manner as Sunni Turks.

Goebel, Zane. Global Leadership Talk. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190845049.001.0001.

Abstract:
This book examines the discursive connections between global flows of ideologies about leadership and good governance, how these ideologies are localized in Indonesia, and how all of this relates to changing political, bureaucratic, and market regimes between 1998 and 2004. It starts with a speech given by the head of the International Monetary Fund about the importance of good governance. It then traces the uptake of shibboleths of this speech within Indonesian government policy documents, within the Indonesian mass media, and in the everyday talk that occurred in a government office in Indonesia during the author’s five months of fieldwork in that office between August 2003 and January 2004. The book makes the case that in order to formulate nuanced interpretations of connection and processes of localization, researchers need to engage in a type of reflexivity that involves a constant movement between data from different time-spaces. Such a practice, it is argued, adds to our understanding of how and why both researchers and those researched come to believe and present themselves in specific ways. In doing so, the book extends contemporary conceptual work in the broad areas of sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology as it relates to notions of scale, connection, chronotope, leadership talk, and personhood, while sketching how this conceptual work can be operationalized methodologically.
