Abstract:
In the contemporary discussion of the concept of space, there is a tendency to employ space to make a comment about the society that inhabits it. Regarding this and the prose of the contemporary American authors, the theory of Bakhtin’s chronotope may be one of the most legitimate ways to depict the society of contemporary America. In the fiction of Don DeLillo, one could discuss three typical American chronotopes: the city, the desert, and the road. The said chronotopes may be interpreted within the scopes of Bakhtin’s original chronotopes. They operate on both individual and mutually overlapping levels. In one way or the other, the American chronotopes mentioned seem to function as the ultimate Nowhere, space where the modern characters go to disappear in DeLillo’s prose.

Abstract This article explores Madeline Miller’s Circe from the perspective of Bakhtin’s concept of the chronotope, the inseparability of space and time in fiction. The article focuses on the chronotopes of the road, the idyll and the threshold in the novel, and how these intersect with its themes of gender and immortality. The island of Aiaia acts as a threshold, transforming all who cross it. Circe’s life on the island, however, is a repetitive idyll; only at the end of the novel does she become a traveller on the road herself rather than just a stop on the way.

AbstractThe paper presents the idea of the chronotope in the novel Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy, with special attention paid to idyllic time and space. The research is mainly based on the theory of chronotopes according to Mikhail Bakhtin, who distinguishes various types and motifs within this notion. The author presents here the features of an idyllic chronotope, among them vast descriptions of nature and its connection with human life, as well as the destruction of an idyll, unhappy love and the motif of a road or path, which seems to be one of the most significant motifs in the work. The paper also presents the importance of coincidence and the sudden decisions of characters in the process of constructing the whole story of Gabriel and Bathsheba.

The Chronotope of Exile in the Post-Yugoslav Novel and the Boundaries of Imaginary HomelandsAlthough the chronotopic approach to the novels of exile is almost self-explanatory, certain specifics expressed by post-Yugoslav exile narrations evoke a separate chronotope interpretation. First and foremost, post-Yugoslav literature is additionally encumbered with the identity issue because the abandoned areas of the nineties for the exiled writer do not disappear at a metaphorical level, by turning into a mnemotope, but in the actual break-up of the political entity, the imaginary supranational heritage transforms itself into a kind of counterculture, mostly affirmed by exile writers. Therefore, returning to the abandoned place often becomes possible only as a return to the past. In this paper, the literary theme of exile will be followed comparatively, starting from the reflective nostalgia in the prose of Dubravka Ugrešić (The Ministry of Pain), through a global exile which reflects the history of the relationship between European persecutions and America as an unfair homeland, which breaks all identity support in the novels of Aleksandar Hemon (The Nowhere Man; The Lazarus Project), to the intra-Yugoslav, "hereditary" exile in the novels of Goran Vojnović (Chefurs Raus!; Yugoslavia, My Homeland), which fathers left to their sons like a curse of the genus. In the texts mentioned above, the chronotope of exile is dealt with at the level of genre, as the major, supreme chronotope, which includes or opens space to a series of specific local chronotopes, which are fundamental to exile narration. These motifs are also encountered in other genres, but in exile narration they are the bearing pillars of the genre. They are, by their nature, chronotopic because they are realised through the binary spatial-temporal categories of presence and absence, affiliation and non-affiliation, anchoring and nomadism. In this paper, I will look at three such chronotope motifs: 1) the motif of home as a non-place or a place of absence; 2) the motif of other/mirror country and other/”mirror” history; 3) the motif of return and travel (by train), which regularly invokes the stereotypical representation of the place and the past. Chronotop wygnania w powieści postjugosłowiańskiej i granice ojczyzn wyobrażonychChociaż chronotopiczne podejście do analizy powieści problematyzujących wygnanie wydaje się oczywiste, to specyficzne cechy postjugosłowiańskich powieści tego rodzaju wymagają szczególnej interpretacji koncepcji chronotopu, ponieważ literatura postjugosłowiańska jest dodatkowo obciążona kwestią tożsamości. Dla wygnanego pisarza opuszczone przestrzenie lat dziewięćdziesiątych nie znikają jedynie na poziomie metaforycznym, zamieniając się w przestrzeń pamięci (mnemotop), ale faktycznie przestają istnieć jako rzeczywisty byt polityczny. Tym samym, wyobrażone dziedzictwo ponadnarodowe przekształca się w swoistą kontrkulturę, w większości afirmowaną przez pisarzy na wygnaniu. Dlatego też powrót do opuszczonej przestrzeni często jest możliwy jedynie jako powrót do przeszłości. Artykuł omawia literacki motyw wygnania w perspektywie komparatystycznej. Rozpoczyna się od refleksyjnej nostalgii w prozie Dubravki Ugrešić (Ministerstwo bólu). Następnie wiedzie poprzez globalne wygnanie, które odzwierciedla historię związków między europejskimi prześladowaniami a Ameryką jako niesprawiedliwą ojczyzną łamiącą wszelkie tożsamości, w powieściach Aleksandra Hemona (Nowhere Man, The Lazarus Project). Wreszcie, dochodzi do wewnątrzjugosłowiańskiego wygnania „dziedzicznego” w powieściach Gorana Vojnovicia (Chefurs Raus!, Yugoslavia, My Homeland) – wygnania, które ojcowie pozostawili swoim synom niczym przekleństwo rodzaju. W wyżej wymienionych tekstach chronotop wygnania jest rozpatrywany na poziomie gatunku jako główny, nadrzędny chronotop, który zawiera w sobie lub otwiera przestrzeń dla szeregu specyficznych chronotopów lokalnych, fundamentalnych dla narracji wygnańczych. Chociaż podobne motywy występują także w innych gatunkach, to są one filarami w przypadku narracji wygnańczych, z natury chronotopicznych, gdyż realizowanych za pomocą binarnych kategorii czasoprzestrzennych: obecności i nieobecności, przynależności i braku przynależności, zakotwiczenia i nomadyzmu. W tym artykule przyjrzę się trzem takim motywom chronotopu: 1) motywowi domu jako nie-miejsca lub miejsca nieobecności; 2) motywowi innych/lustrzanych krajów i innych/lustrzanych historii; 3) motywowi powrotu i podróży (pociągiem), który regularnie przywołuje stereotypowe przedstawienie miejsca i przeszłości. Kronotop egzila u postjugoslavenskom romanu i granice imaginarnih domovinaPremda je kronotopski pristup romanima egzila gotovo samorazumljiv, određene specifičnosti koje iskazuje postjugoslavenske egzilne naracije prizivaju zasebnu kronotopsku interpretaciju. Prije svega, postjugoslavenska književnost opterećena je dodatnim identitetskim bremenom jer napušteni prostori devedesetih godina za pisca u egzilu ne nestaju na nekoj metaforičkoj razini seleći se u mnemotope, nego se stvarnim raspadom političke cjeline, imaginarna supranacionalna baština transformira u svojevrsnu kontrakulturu, najčešće afirmiranu upravo posredstvom egzilnih pisaca. Stoga i povratak na napušteno mjesto često postaje moguć samo kao povratak u prošlost. U ovom će se radu književna tema egzila pratiti komparativno, počevši od refleksivne nostalgije u prozi Dubravke Ugrešić (Ministarstvo boli), preko globalnog egzila u kojemu se zrcali povijest odnosa europskih progona i Amerike kao maćehinske domovine koja rastače sve identitetske oslonce u romanima Aleksandra Hemona (Čovjek bez prošlosti; Projekat Lazarus), do unutarjugoslavenskog, „naslijeđenog“ egzila u romanima Gorana Vojnovića (Čefuri raus!; Jugoslavija, moja domovina), koje, poput prokletstva roda, očevi ostavljaju sinovima. U navedenim tekstovima o kronotopu egzila govorimo na razini žanra, kao glavnom, nadređenom kronotopu koji uključuje ili otvara prostor nizu specifičnih lokalnih kronotopa ili motiva, ključnih za egzilnu naraciju. Te se motivske jedinice susreću i u drugim žanrovima, no u egzilnoj su naraciji nosivi stupovi žanra. Po svojoj su naravi kronotopični jer se realiziraju kroz binarne prostorno-vremenske kategorije prisutnosti i odsutnosti, pripadanja i nepripadanja, usidrenosti i skitalaštva. U ovom radu osvrnut ću se na tri takva kronotopska motiva: 1. motiv doma kao ne-mjesta ili mjesta odsustva; 2. motiv druge/zrcalne domovine i druge/zrcalne povijesti; 3. motiv povratka i putovanja (vlakom), koje redovito priziva stereotipnu reprezentaciju mjesta i prošlosti.

Abstract:
The paper analyzes two works by A. Gorodnitsky – the poem “The Island of Israel” (1993) and the song “The Road to Israel” (2007), from the point of view of spatial and temporal organization, as well as visual imagery, with the help of which the artistic world of works is depicted. Thus, the main purpose of the article is to analyze the visual features of the Israel chronotope in the two designated works. For this, firstly, the space, time and visual imagery in the poem and in the song are analyzed in detail. Then observations and conclusions are systematized and compared with the audiovisual representation of these works in the film by A. Gorodnitsky and N. Kasperovich “Atlantes hold the sky” (episode 14). As a result, conclusions are drawn about the peculiarities of the visual organization of the chronotope of Israel in these poems by A. Gorodnitsky, based on the concept of the chronotope of M.M. Bakhtin. The visual chronotope is primarily made of space through which time is also visible, and therefore the chronotope as a whole. Other features of the chronotope are associated with the cyclical organization of time, the combination of the past and the future, as well as the real and imaginary world of the lyric subject.

Abstract:
The subject of this research is the points of intersection of space-time relations of the “foreign world” in such form of authorial self-expression as correspondence of the English romanticists. The goal is to examine the key elements of the chronotope of “foreign world”, and determine the peculiarities of their functionality in the romantic epistolary prose. The object of this research is the 50 letters of W. Wordsworth, 224 letters of G. G. Byron, 67 letters of P. B. Shelley, 51 letters of J. Keats, and 200 letters of R. Southey. The article employs a set of general scientific and special literary criticism methods, such as descriptive, biographical, historical-genetic, historical-functional, structural-semantic, and comparative-typological. It is established that the “foreign world” in the correspondence of English romanticists is represented by the following points of intersection of space-time planes: chronotope of the road / road meetup / traffic accident; contact / meetup / date; cities / countries / villages, with the dominant motifs of the road and contact. Leaning on the analysis of space-time plane of the “foreign world” in the correspondence of English romanticists, the conclusion is made that the chronotope of “foreign world” is a certain access code to the world pattern of English romanticists, the key category that resembles the worldview of a particular epoch, namely romanticism. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that this work is first to analyze space-time relations of “foreign world” in the correspondence of English romanticists. The future research should focus on the types and peculiarities of functionality of the chronotope of “native world” in the correspondence of English romanticists, as well as the interaction of space and time in the correspondence of English realist writers, determining and comparing the integral and variable traits characteristic to epistolary prose as a whole.

Abstract:
The relevance of this article is dictated by the need to study one of the main components of the Yakut geocultural landscape - the liminal road space, which is considered to be an fictional system of its own. In this regard the scientific novelty of the article is obvious: the need to view the liminal (intermediate) space as a semantic structure manifested in the constancy of images, universals that have cultural, historical, and mental commonality. The study of one of the interesting aspects of the local text, the intermediate space, has not received detailed development in Yakut science to this day. The purpose of this article is to identify the borderlines and space boundaries in particular in the context of the chronotopic system of the Yakut novel. The author emphasizes the interest in the liminal chronotope and the road as a special chronotopic complex that strengthens other spatial structures, or rather topos of the alas (villages) and cities, without which it is impossible to build a complete geopoetic picture of the Yakut world. In the context of the above theme, the image of a literary hero, whose consciousness is extremely responsive to modifications of the surrounding landscape, acquires a new semantic function. The author of the article adheres to the viewpoint that the process of evolution of the hero of the path, which is fully revealed in the space of the road, most clearly shows cultural signs of the perception of the problem of life and death which in different literary periods acquire unexpectedly interesting properties. The results of the research undertaken in this article can be used in the fictional landscape study, which is becoming the most relevant in recent times in Russian Text Linguistics.

Apparu au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale avec la publication en 1957 d’On the Road de Jack Kerouac et la sortie, 12 ans plus tard, d’Easy Rider de Dennis Hopper, le road novel et le road movie constituent à nos yeux les deux versants de ce que nous avons choisi de nommer le récit de la route. Devant l’absence de réelle étude conjointe entre les deux formes et la persistance d’amalgames, nous souhaitons mettre en évidence ce qui permettrait de distinguer le road novel et le road movie d’autres récits d’errance. Un tel travail nécessite la mise au jour d’un outil d’analyse intermédial permettant d’embrasser de concert des oeuvres relevant d’expressions médiatiques différentes. Nous proposons donc de recourir au concept de chronotope développé par Bakhtine en littérature, et dont il a été démontré il y a peu qu’il est aussi susceptible de s’appliquer à un objet cinématographique. Nous posons que road novel et road movie reposent sur la combinaison d’un ensemble de chronotopes fondamentaux : celui de la route, dans le contexte de la motorisation et des non-lieux de la postmodernité, et celui du seuil, compris comme l’expression du tournant d’une vie. La présence d’une dimension parodique nous amène en outre à mobiliser un autre concept bakhtinien : celui de carnavalesque, qui s’articulerait justement autour des chronotopes de la route et du seuil définis précédemment. Afin de procéder à cette analyse chronotopique, nous nous appuyons sur un corpus d’oeuvres empruntées au répertoire américain, québécois et allemand, en raison notamment des multiples passerelles susceptibles d’être érigées entre ces différentes cultures
Appearing in the wake of World War II, with the publication in 1957 of On the Road by Jack Kerouac,followed 12 years later with the screening of Denis Hopper’s Easy Rider, the road novel and road movie constitute, we argue, two sides of what we call the road narrative. Faced with a lack of comprehensive studies embracing both sides concurrently, and with recurrent amalgams, we reflect on the components differentiating the road novel and road movie from other types of wandering stories. Such a project calls for the construction of an intermedial apparatus, enabling us to jointly encompass artworks belonging to different media formats. Consequently, we build on the concept of the chronotope, as developed by Bakhtin as a tool for literarycriticism, and recently extended by scholars to cinematographic objects. We show how road novels and roadmovies emerge from the combination of two fundamental chronotopes: that of the road, exemplified by a postmodern universe dominated by motor vehicles and non-places, and that of the threshold, understood as the expression of a critical turn in one’s life. The noted presence of a parodic dimension in road narrativescalls for the introduction of an additional bakhtinian concept: the carnivalesque, which, as we show, can be articulated in relation to the previously defined road and threshold chronotopes. For this chronotopical analysis, we selected artworks from the American, Quebecois and German repertoires, a choice justified by the numerous potential connections to be established between those three different cultures

Abstract:
In this essay Murakami Haruki’s novel The Wind Up Bird Chronicle was analysed from the perspective of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the chronotope. The aim was to explore the concept of time and space as presented in the novel. In particular, the analysis focused on how Bakhtin’s chronotopes can be applied to The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, how the chronotopes can enhance our understanding of the novel, and finally how the chronotope theory can be applied to the concept of ‘magic realism’ that is often used to describe Murakami’s authorship. Four chronotopes, presented by Bachtin, were selected and applied to the novel: every-day life, the road, crisis and the castle. The concept of the chronotope allows analysis of how time and space work together in literature and how they form patterns of correlation in the sujet. Results showed that the four chronotopes were found in the novel, and that they also interacted with each other. The chronotope of everyday-life was apparent throughout the novel, and the narrator was under its control. The narrator also seemed to create every-day life out of the chronotopes of the road and crisis by re-living the crises in the road. These three chronotopes seemed inseparable in The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. Finally, the fourth chronotope, the castle, illustrated how a concrete room in the novel, a house, became a part of time and space through a character who, by his presence, gave the impression of slowing down time. When this character disappeared, time made its way through space, making the chronotope of the castle visible. The essay concludes that the chronotope theory was a relevant way to analyse The Wind Up Chronicle as it provided a concept of how time and space appeared together in a novel where time and space is always present. The analysis helped creating a way of understanding the patterns in the novel, which were not always clear, thereby also increasing the understanding of The Wind Up Bird Chronicle.

This thesis aims to re-categorize Chinese independent films from a region-based perspective as a critical response to existing literature on Chinese independent films. This thesis analyzes three independent films made in three different regions of China in order to investigate regional Chinese independent cinema as a recently rising phenomenon: respectively, Jia Zhangke’s Xiaowu (1997) made in Shanxi Province, Ying Liang’s Taking Father Home (Bei yazi de nanhai, 2006) in Sichuan Province, and Robin Weng’s Fujian Blue (Jinbi huihuang, 2007) in Fujian Province. By using Bakhtin’s concept of chronotope (literally time-space) as the fundamental framework and exploring the many aspects of it, I will develop three major theoretical points to study selected regional Chinese independent films: first, chronotope enables the evaluation of texts of Chinese independent films; second, the documentary impulses prevailing Chinese independent films serve as the chronotopic linkage between the world in the film text and the world the film text represents; three, the mediation function as one aspect of chronotope is characterized by the negotiation between regional Chinese independent films and many social relations, for example, filmmakers, casting, audiences. This thesis also explores many issues related to Chinese independent films, for example: How do we value the unique film practice of Chinese independent filmmakers instead of viewing them as a unified whole? How do we relate Chinese independent films as aesthetic practices to the region-specific reality they are embedded in? How can Chinese independent cinema as a social practice play an effective role in society? The exploration of these questions does not only enlighten new research perspectives on Chinese independent films, but also provide reflections on the geographical, cultural and social diversity of Chinese regions.

Jeffrey Eugenides‟ Middlesex can be ascribed to many genres, one of which is the novel of immigration. Mikhail Bakhtin has suggested that each genre, indeed any literary motif, can be defined by its own chronotope, literally “time space,” “the intrinsic connectedness of temporal and spatial relationships that are artistically expressed in literature.” The essay discusses the chronotope of immigration in Middlesex, and looks at how four specific intersections of time and space, embodied by the four houses inhabited by the Stephanides family, contribute to the unfolding of this particular immigration saga. The four houses can thus be seen to represent the key elements of this novel‟s instance of a chronotope of immigration, which brings up concepts such as assimilation, hybridity and “third space.” The essay also examines the relations of central characters to time, space and each other; the upstairs/downstairs and inside/outside dichotomies within each house providing interesting keys to inter-gender and inter-generational alienation within this chronotope of immigration.

Abstract:
This dissertation considers Hollywood film locales rhetorically, as the site of many different kinds of community activities and perspectives. In particular, my focus will be on locales and mise-en-scene elements that replicate certain "chronotopic" patterns of time and space organized by our culture in its literature. These special patterns, along with their signifying functions, were first outlined by Mikhail Bakhtin during the period 1937-1938. As a first step, I begin with a broad survey, outlining the salient features of Bakhtin's individual chronotopes ancient and modern, and considering fundamental connections between these chronotopes and classical Hollywood genres of the 1940s. I devote my second chapter to the exploration of other important theoretical bases of Bakhtin's work; in particular, to the belief in the rejuvenating power of folk language and the carnivalesque. My argument is that the "idyllic chronotope" is given the same position of centrality in Bakhtin's discussions of space and time as carnivalesque speech genres are in his discussions of language. The appearance of an "idyllic interlude" in a work of literature or in a film can suddenly throw the rest of the represented world into moralizing "perspective" just as a carnivalesque insult or quip can "degrade" a high-sounding speech. My third theoretical problem will be the reception and processing of the film text. How does the audience of a film apply their socially-formed schema and knowledge of the characters' "situations" to a film text in order to construct meaning? Here I demonstrate how the "high-lighting" of a film text with recognizable chronotopes can help an audience to form judgments about characters and to construct analogies between character situations and situations arising in their own communities. In my fourth and final chapter, I branch out from Bakhtin's models to consider new chronotopes as they may develop during a particular historical decade. Specifically, I examine the representation of the "shopping mall" as it appears throughout a dozen or so 1980s films in order to show how the spatiotemporal worlds suggested by these films can be "opened out" into a study of teen culture and social mores across the decade as a whole.

The non-fiction introduction to The Wyvern’s Tale: A Thought Experiment in Bakhtinian Dual Chronotope Occupation documents the evolution of the novel, The Wyvern’s Tale, from the ideas that inspired it to its current incarnation as a full-length novel intended for an adult audience. It comprises an explanation of the novel’s main concept, Bakhtinian dual chronotope occupation, as well as an idea-focused account of the creative-writing process. Detailed in the introduction’s theoretical premise is the relationship between Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of chronotope and the carnivalesque and the ideal of the divided union in Chalcedonian Christology. This relationship revolves around the state of existing in two time-spaces at once. The novel, The Wyvern’s Tale, explores this dual existence imaginatively using the setting of parallel worlds – the every-day world and a fictional world called Wyvern – as well as a protagonist, who functions in the fictional world as a Christ-figure. Particular thematic emphasis is placed on differing perceptions of truth and reality, and on the transformative power of costumes. The novel’s outcome, dependent on the reader’s decision as to whether dual chronotope occupation is possible or impossible, is respectively either hopeful or tragic. It attempts to reflect the outcome of the life and death of Christ depending on whether his co-existence as God and man was real or imagined.

This dissertation proposes that Philippine independent urban cinema reveals imaginaries of spatial justice. The works approached as Philippine urban cinema are independently produced and internationally circulated films that heavily feature or reference Philippine slums as setting, with narratives that centre on the lives of the urban poor. The theory of spatial justice as defined by leading urban theorists argues that social justice has spatio-temporal dimensions. Grounded on this foundational premise, this study approaches Philippine urban cinema in its capacity to foreground and represent the complexities of social justice as contextualised in Philippine urban conditions, with local and global trajectories. Alongside the theory of spatial justice, the dissertation draws from Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the “chronotope” (literally meaning time-space) to formulate a theory of the “slum chronotope” as a foundational concept for analysing the ways by which films are able to imagine issues of spatial justice, with emphasis on character configuration and narrative formation. The chapters are structured according to genres and modalities, where other chronotopes that dialogue with the slum chronotope are identified and examined. In the comingof- age chapter, the study locates “chronotopes of passage”; in the melodrama chapter, the study locates “affective chronotopes” configured by the spatial practice of walking; in the Manila noir chapter, the study locates “chronotopes of mobility”; and in the final chapter, the study locates “chronotopes of in/visibility” in the Overseas Filipino Worker genre. This study offers a novel interdisciplinary framework for analysing Philippine urban cinema, and in the process, makes a case for Philippine urban history as crucial grounds for understanding the global urbanisation of poverty.

Moufida Tlatli et Raja Amari, deux réalisatrices tunisiennes qui ont recours à l’élément aquatique en tant que métaphore visuelle de la construction de leurs univers féminins particuliers. L’eau, en tant que symbole d’impulsion vitale et moyen de transformation identitaire, est souvent présent dans l’imaginaire des cinéastes magrébines. Mes réflexions verseront sur deux films concrets où il existe un traitement antithétique de l’eau : Tlatli présente, dans La Saison des hommes (2000), une cartographie du désir où le regard et la figure féminines sont liés à la liberté d’une mer mythique et à l’île de Djerba. Elle montre un gynécée, dans un chronotope contrasté de fermeture et d’ouverture, où les hommes, qui travaillent sur le continent, rendent visite à leurs femmes une fois par an.
