Abstract:
This work provides a sequential approach to improve efficiency of Combustion Ignition engines which involves both performance and emissions by using the artificial neural network (ANN). In recent years continuous work is going on for improving the output and reducing the emissions especially for Combustion Ignition engines which are mostly used for transportation purposes. In view of the above, the experimental data of a four stroke Combustion Ignition engine is taken as reference. However, the experimental data is split into three categories as input data, target data and output data in neural networks. All these data are trained using neural network toolbar in MATLAB with ten hidden layers by which error deviation are calculated, in order to reduce error deviation between neural network and experimental values, design of inlet manifolds is varied and performance parameters along with emissions is calculated and compared with neural network values. The results showed minimum error over the emission and performance parameters of CI engines from the manifold designs and ANN model. These results provide a sequential approach to improve efficiency of Combustion Ignition engines with the help of neural networks.

Abstract:
Objective: To explore the within- and between-network patterns of the default mode network (DMN), the frontoparietal control network (FPCN), and the dorsal attention network (DAN) in cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) with and without cognitive impairment (CI). Methods: Twenty CSVD with CI subjects, 21 CSVD without CI subjects, and 25 healthy elderly controls were recruited. The within- and between-network patterns of the networks were identified based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data. Results: Compared with the control group, both the CSVD with CI group and the CSVD without CI group displayed decreased within-network function of the DMN and lower negative connectivity between the DMN and other networks (i.e., DMN and DAN, DMN and FPCN), whereas the CSVD with CI group additionally showed within- and between-network alterations of the FPCN (i.e., increased within-network function of the FPCN and lower negative connectivity between the FPCN and the DMN). Furthermore, these alterations of the FPCN were correlated with the cognitive function of CSVD subjects. Interestingly, the between-network connectivity of the FPCN and the DMN was negatively correlated with deep white matter hyperintensities (DWMH) volume in CSVD subjects. Conclusion: These findings suggest that cognitive alterations of CSVD subjects may be mainly regulated by the FPCN that correlates with DWMH burden, and shed light on the investigation of surrogate markers of CSVD.

Abstract:
Abstract. Healthcare Critical Infrastructure (HCI) is not an independent network; the operation of a healthcare facility depends on many other Critical Infrastructure (CI) networks such as electric supply CI, water supply CI, etc., forming an interdependent CI network. During a flooding disaster event, as the flood levels rise, the interdependent HCI network becomes vulnerable. A failure in one of the CI results in failure of the dependent CI. During a disaster event such as flooding, the failures propagate and cause cascading failures like a domino effect. The paper proposes an IoT based flood sensor network integrated with a stochastic Petri net interdependent healthcare critical infrastructure network simulation model. An IoT (Internet of Things) based flood water level sensor network can deliver real-time information on the flood conditions at the various interdependent CI facilities in the interdependent network, using the Sensor Observation Services (SOS). The Stochastic Petri Net (SCPN) based interdependent Healthcare Critical Infrastructure (HCI) simulation model, is used to model and simulate the stochastic interdependencies between the interdependent HCI networks. The real-time flood sensor network is integrated with the SCPN based interdependent HCI simulation model. The end to end system is developed in a spatiotemporal environment. This kind of an integrated simulation model will help the end-user to understand system dynamics in real-time, visualize and predict the propagation of cascading failure scenarios in an Interdependent HCI network in a spatiotemporal environment, during a flooding scenario. Real-time information simulation would help disaster response personnel to respond to the question, ‘what if something else happens?

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of social networks on contraceptive adoption in Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 430 couples; the age of men was between 15 and 49 years. χ2 test was applied to test the association between independent variables and current contraceptive use. Binary logistic regression was applied to examine the effects of social network on contraceptive use, and multinomial logistic regression was applied to examine the effect of social network on the choice of method. Findings Results from binary logistic regression reveal that social networks of both men (OR=2.71, 95% CI=1.371−5.354) and women (OR= 3.597, 95% CI=1.754−7.380) had a strong positive effect on current contraceptive use. The result from multinomial logistic regression also shows that men’s social network (OR= 2.74, 95% CI= 1.356−5.548) and women’s social network (OR=4.165,95% CI=1.958−8.860) were also associated with choosing a modern contraceptive method. Originality/value Social networks have a significant effect on current contraceptive use and modern method choice in Bangladesh. A social network approach should be included in family planning program in Bangladesh.

Abstract:
Link prediction in social networks has become a growing concern among researchers. In this paper, the clustering method was used to exploit the grouping tendency of nodes, and a clustering index (CI) was proposed to predict potential links with characteristics of scientific cooperation network taken into consideration. Results showed that CI performed better than the traditional indices for scientific coauthorship networks by compensating for their disadvantages. Compared with traditional algorithms, this method for a specific type of network can better reflect the features of the network and achieve more accurate predictions.

Abstract:
Purpose – The study ' s purpose is to review and discuss limitations of “strategic niche management” (SNM) success factors in relation to the experiences of an enterprise network to improve niche development for integrated design concepts. Design/methodology/approach – The emergence of a successful passive house innovation network in the Flemish Region is described. The innovation journey of the network is related to success factors detected in SNM literature regarding market niche development. Findings – The study identifies additional success factors for systemic innovation, such as involving small- and medium-sized innovators and demonstration projects and using a dedicated regional enterprise network. Research limitations/implications – The qualitative analysis specifically reflected on SNM success factors such as envisioning, learning, and network composition and formation. The study confirms the importance of these success factors by means of one detailed innovation journey. It identifies additional success factors and discusses opportunities to improve the relation of SNM literature with other seminal fields. Practical implications – Government seed money is important in providing a breakthrough in enterprise network initiatives. A focus on architectural innovation instead of technology innovation is to be preferred for stimulating integrated design concepts. Originality/value – The paper addresses the relevance and limitations of SNM success factors during the formation of enterprise networks. The study shows how an integrated design approach was used to cluster innovation opportunities and to inspire innovation development and collaboration for know-how development between multiple players.

Abstract:
115 Background: Larger social networks have been associated with better breast cancer survival. To investigate potential mediators, we evaluated associations of social network size and diversity with lifestyle and treatment factors associated with prognosis. Methods: We included 9,331 women from the After Breast Cancer Pooling Project who provided data on social networks within two years following diagnosis. A social network index was derived from information about the presence of a spouse or intimate partner, religious ties, community participation, friendship ties, and numbers of relatives. Diversity was assessed as variety of ties, independent of size. We used logistic regression to evaluate associations with outcomes and evaluated whether effect estimates differed using meta-analytic techniques. Results: Associations of social networks and outcomes generally did not differ by cohort. Because of the low prevalence of smoking and alcohol consumption in the Shanghai cohort, however, analyses of smoking and alcohol included US cohorts only. Women who were socially isolated (small networks) were more likely to be obese (body mass index>30 kg/m2, OR=1.21, 95% CI:1.03-1.42) and have low physical activity (<10 MET-h/wk, OR=1.53, 95% CI:1.34-1.75) compared to socially integrated women. Women with low network diversity were more likely to be current smokers (OR=3.68, 95% CI:2.19-6.19) and have high alcohol consumption (>15 g/d alcohol, OR=2.43, 95% CI:1.60-3.69). Among node positive cases, socially isolated women were more likely not to receive chemotherapy (OR=1.52, 95% CI:1.03-2.25). By contrast, low network diversity, but not social network size, was associated with greater odds of not receiving adjuvant hormonal therapy (OR=1.52, 95% CI:1.03-2.23). Associations with surgery were nonsignificant. Conclusions: In a large pooled cohort, small, less diverse social networks measured post-diagnosis were associated with more adverse lifestyle factors and less intensive cancer treatment, which may help to explain poorer breast cancer prognosis in socially isolated women.

Abstract:
Background.Adolescent friendships have been linked to physical activity levels; however, network characteristics have not been broadly examined.Method.In a cross-sectional analysis of 1061 adolescents (11–15 years), achieving 60 minutes/day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and participating in over 2 hours/day of sedentary behaviour were determined based on friendship network characteristics (density; proportion of active/sedentary friends; betweenness centrality; popularity; clique membership) and perceived social support.Results.Adolescents with no friendship nominations participated in less MVPA. For boys and girls, a ten percent point increase in active friends was positively associated with achievement of 60 minutes/day of MVPA (OR 1.11; 95% CI 1.02–1.21, OR 1.14; 95% CI 1.02–1.27, resp.). For boys, higher social support from friends was negatively associated with achieving 60 minutes/day of MVPA (OR 0.63; 95% CI 0.42–0.96). Compared with low density networks, boys in higher density networks were more likely to participate in over 2 hours/day of sedentary behaviour (OR 2.93; 95% CI 1.32–6.49). Social support from friends also modified associations between network characteristics and MVPA and sedentary behaviour.Conclusion.Different network characteristics appeared to have different consequences. The proportion of active close friends was associated with MVPA, while network density was associated with sedentary behaviour. This poses challenges for intervention design.

This research aims to understand the role of support network and their effects on processes of subjectivization of transgender people, called here also people who move between genders, and legitimize singular modes of existence. From the genealogic perspective, deconstrucs the scientific discourse that engendered transexuality as a mental disorder, as well as questions the treatments and medical-legal procedures forged to deal with gender expressions that differ from alleged established normality. Cartography, taken as a methodological approach, helped the insertion in the field, that occurred in Grupo TransRevolu??o, in Rio de Janeiro. Through the use of the term support network, already used by people informally, it is possible to understand the dynamics of group, the meetings that enables, constituting a speech space, listening, horizontality, production of care for the self and the others, and also where the activism is organized.

Abstract:
We propose a preliminary model for perception analyses of professional identity based on quantitative criteria as applied to a specific academic area. The identity is a largely discussed by social sciences and there is a consensus about the difficulties in describing its social construction and even its perception by the subjects themselves. Professional identity is not different. Here, we studied how public policies aimed at academic and professional consolidation and training for the microelectronics sector may have had influence on its trainees and professionals over the last decade. We used social network analysis tools on Lattes curricula to determine semantic similarities between bibliographic productions of researchers who applied projects to the CNPq CA-ME and of trainees under CI-Brazil Program. We then used the colected data to characterize, from the distribution of keywords colleted throughou time, the identity evolution of the subjects. This paper concerns itself also with a brief presentation and evaluation of the CI-Brasil program as such (i.e., a program). Initiated in 2002, it has helped the alteration of the microelectronic ecosystem in the country, especially regarding training and fixation of human resources for the integrated circuit design sector. Embedded electronics have been partially responsible for deficits in the Brazilian trade balance. Therefore, public policy must be formulated cautiously and responsibly so as to increase sector infrastructure and form adequate human resources regarding market demand, be it at technician, undergraduate or graduate levels, and training these professionals. This paper focuses on undergraduate degrees and other training initiatives. Finally, this paper aims to indicate indispensable requirements for the assimilation of these professionals by the market, with public support and financing in partnership with universities and private enterprises (triple helix.)

Some animals have extremely complex relationships including the formation of matriarchal societies, alliances and communities, specific long-term relationships, and formation of flexible groups, such as dolphins. Ilha Grande Bay, along with Sepetiba Bay, have the largest population of Sotalia guianensis throughout its distribution, with about 1311 individuals in the first one, and 1043 individuals in the second, where it has been registered groups with up to 450 individuals. This study aimed to analyze the social organization of the mothers of S. guianensis from Ilha Grande Bay. The mothers were considered those dolphins observed at least five times in high proximity of a calf; all its associates were also classified as females and included in the analysis. The analysis of these mothers? social structure was carried out in SOCPROG? software (2.5 version) using a Half Weight Index (HWI). It was performed an analysis of the community division by modularity which indicated that individuals do not form independent clusters. A Monte Carlo permutation test was done and showed the presence of preferred associations among some dyads. Finally, a temporal analysis was performed with the use of mathematical models fitted to the Lagged Association Rate to try to explain how associations behave over time. The social structure of the 25 mothers identified in Ilha Grande Bay seems to be poorly differentiated, forming a large social network with weak associations between dyads, and following a fission-fusion dynamics. There was no statistical difference in the associations between and within classes (mothers X females). This work is a contribution to the understanding of the species? social dynamics, which are still poorly known, and highlights the need for more research in the area.
(vers?o 2.5) atrav?s do ?ndice Half Weight (HWI).

The current debate about the food regimes seeks to reflect, in general, the transformation of the food system over time and space. This concept allows to place, historicizing and identify the main actors and stabilizing elements of each historical context, while allowing point periods of instability, which, in turn, drive changes towards overcoming a regime with another. Among the different approaches to the emergence of so-called 3? regime, one issue was highlighted in this research: the politicization of consumption and the emergence and expansion of alternative food networks. In this process, different types of organization, and food market are established at the same time that consumers is centrality. In Brazil, the process of formation of alternative food networks culminated in the construction of the National Network of Responsible Consumer Groups, that did emerge different paths, processes and dynamics of various groups. Among them, we analyze the case of the Rural-Urban Integration Movement ? MICC ? which since the 80s, has been articulating small farmers and working classes of consumers of S?o Paulo east zone around the marketing of organic food and non-organic, also called conventional food. The study examined the performance of the MICC from the concepts of governance, market and embeddedness. As a result pointed that MICC experience is specific because is related to the classic struggles of reducing inequality and social injustice because the emergence of the movement is closely related to the work of the Catholic Church in the context of political mobilization for land reform. However, on the initiative of another actor, the Kairos Institute, MICC expands agenda and form of action, adopting the narrative responsible consumption

Agroecology has emerged in recent decades as a proposal inserted into non-hegemonic developmental alternatives, expressing itself broadly as a social movement, science, practice and a way of life. Several social movement organizations and NGOs of agroecological field congregate in the National Agroecology Articulation (ANA). The research sought to understand the formation and political organization of the ANA, understood as a network with heterogeneous connections and social actors, established in 2002 to promote policy formulation and exchanges between organizations working with agroecology. We followed ANA?s trajectory to understand how the association promoted agroecology as a recognized public problem and represented itself as a social network, both for converging approaches and actions, and to oppose the agribusiness and to dispute public policies. The study begins with the historical reconstruction of the agro-ecological movement, from the initial steps of alternative agriculture to the spreading and defense of agroecology by different actors and sectors. As methodological tools, we conducted semi-structured interviews, participation in events and analysis of various documents. The analytical framework was composed by the notions of social networks and social movements with a relational approach and dense description. The action as a network, even in a horizontal effort, revealed concentrations, controversies and dynamics with different degrees of involvement. We noticed that the relationship with the state guided the action in network: the state is taken as a means of expanding the political proposal, in more or less intense cycles. This relationship also guided the relationship between different social actors for greater dissemination of agroecology. From the reading/analysis of the documents, we detected the struggle for political convergence and consensus on issues and speeches, with the management of historically involved NGOs. On the other hand, heterogeneous views emerged in the interviews, showing tensions among political perspectives and strategies that pervade the political fields, in a crossroads where differences in social positions and power relations meet. The study allowed us to observe the relationships and social processes that led to the formation of the ANA, as well as its form of action as a network and its representation as part of the agroecological movement. ANA boosted the political significance of agroecology as a frame, mobilized the actors to a public problem and to network shares with proposals for a new utopia

The Central Test and Evaluation Investment Program (CTEIP) Integrated Network Enhanced Telemetry (iNET) program is currently testing networked telemetry transceivers (IP.TM-Tx/Rx) using the Internet Protocol (IP), for use in telemetry (TM) channels. A unique characteristic of networked telemetry channel is packet drops due to radio frequency (RF) signal dynamics, i.e., terrain, weather, aircraft attitude, manmade objects, etc.. One of the key measures of the IP.TMTx/ Rx is reliability is link availability (LA), and a key element of LA is time to resynchronize after RF link loss.

AbstractIndustry 4.0 is affecting almost every area of the industry, and as a result of its effects, systems, technologies, and the way information is processed are being transformed. Its typical feature is transmission of information in the system environment provided by the Internet of Things. All information should be stored and shared through cloud computing. As a result, access to information should be unrestricted. This chapter is focused on Computational Intelligence (CI) in the context of Industry 4.0. Each subchapter provides fundamentals of some paradigms, followed by the use of CI in the concrete paradigm. The ending part of the chapter is focused on connecting theory and practice in a case study, which lists industrial parts recognition by convolutional neural networks for assisted assembly.

Intrusion detection system plays an important role in network security. However, network intrusion detection (NID) suffers from several problems, such as false positives, operational issues in high dimensional data, and the difficulty of detecting unknown threats. Most of the problems with intrusion detection are caused by improper implementation of the network intrusion detection system (NIDS). Over the past few years, computational intelligence (CI) has become an effective area in extending research capabilities. Thus, NIDS based upon CI is currently attracting considerable interest from the research community. The scope of this review will encompass the concept of NID and presents the core methods of CI, including support vector machine, hidden naïve Bayes, particle swarm optimization, genetic algorithm, and fuzzy logic. The findings of this review should provide useful insights into the application of different CI methods for NIDS over the literature, allowing to clearly define existing research challenges and progress, and to highlight promising new research directions.

Abstract:
The evolution of communication networks and information systems, to support wireless access, cloud and grid computing, and big data, provides great business opportunities. However, it also generates a new trend of sophisticated network threats and offers several challenges in securing information and systems confidentiality, integrity and availability. The traditional techniques used by security experts are mostly static and lack the much needed characteristics of adaptation and self-organization, computational efficiency and error resilience to deal with evolving attacks. The inherent characteristics of computational intelligence (CI) paradigms provide a promising alternative that has gained popularity resulting in significant applications in information security. There is a plethora of CI paradigms commonly used in this domain including artificial neural networks, evolutionary computing, fuzzy systems, and swarm intelligence. This chapter provides an overview of the widely-recognized CI paradigms and shades the light on some of their potential applications in information security.

Abstract:
The recent developments in computational intelligence has enhances the applicability of empirical modelling in different areas particularly in the area of machine learning. These new approaches are based on analysing the data about a system, in particular finding connections between the system state variables (input, internal and output variables) without having precise knowledge about the physical behaviour of the system. These data driven methods explain advances on conventional empirical modelling and include contributions from many overlapping fields like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Computational Intelligence (CI), Soft Computing (SC), Machine Learning (ML), Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA), and Data Mining (DM). The most popular computational intelligence techniques used in process modelling of steel industry includes neural networks, fuzzy rule-based systems, genetic algorithms as well as approaches to model integration. This chapter describes mainly the application of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in steel industry. ANN has extensively used in improving and controlling different processes of steel industry like steel making, casting and rolling which lead to indirect energy savings through reduced product rejects, improved productivity and reduced down time. The efficiency of artificial neural network tool in handling steel plant processes has been discussed in detail. ANN based models are found to be very potential to handle very complex, dynamic and non-linear problems.

Abstract:
Contextual information and Identity Management (IM) is of paramount importance in the growing use of portable mobile devices for sharing information and communication between emergency services in pervasive ad-hoc environments. Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANets) play a vital role within such a context. The concept of ubiquitous/pervasive computing is intrinsically tied to wireless communications. Apart from many remote services, proximity services (context-awareness) are also widely available, and people rely on numerous identities to access these services. The inconvenience of these identities creates significant security vulnerability as well as user discomfort, especially from the network and device point of view in MANet environments. The need of displaying only relevant contextual information (CI) with explicit user control arises in energy constraint devices and in dynamic situations. We propose an approach that allows users to define policies dynamically and a ContextRank Algorithm which will detect the usability of CI. The proposed approach is not only efficient in computation but also gives users total control and makes policy specification more expressive. In this Chapter, the authors address the issue of dynamic policy specification, usage of contextual information to facilitate IM and present a User-centered and Context-aware Identity Management (UCIM) framework for MANets.

Abstract:
Sensor networks (SN) is an emergent technology which combines small sensors outfitted with wireless transmitters to form a network with more powerful sensing capabilities (Akyildiz, Su, Sankarasubramaniam, & Cayirci, 2002; Chong & Kumar, 2003). The primary application for SN technology is monitoring environmental changes making it ideal for deployment in patient monitoring systems. In contrast to other monitoring technologies such as video, SN offers a potentially cheaper solution consisting of cost effective interconnected sensors which cooperatively sense the surroundings. Individual sensor information is then fused to derive an instantaneous description of the environment. In this article, we review briefly the recent applications of CI and SN technologies in health care, mentioning some of the challenges in deploying these technologies. This is followed by an example of a biomedical system incorporating both technologies in a single paradigm. The state of current systems and their advantages over existing methods are highlighted with examples focusing primarily on intelligent automated diagnostic systems to augment clinician diagnoses and health care monitoring systems for continuous patient observation.

Abstract:
An analytical approach using artificial intelligence has been developed for assessing the cooling performance of data centers. This paper discusses the use of a Neural Network (NN) model in the real-time prediction of the cooling performance of a cluster of equipment in a data center environment. The NN model is used to predict the Capture Index (CI) [1] as a function of rack power, cooler airflow and physical/geometric arrangement for a cluster located in a simple room environment. The Neural Network is “trained” on thousands of hypothetical but realistic cluster variations for which CI values have been computed using either PDA [2] or full Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The great value of the NN approach lies in its ability to capture the non-linear relationships between input parameters and corresponding capture indices. The accuracy of the NN approach is 3.8% (Root Mean Square Error) for a set of example scenarios discussed here. Because of the real-time nature of the calculations, the NN approach readily facilitates optimization studies. Example cases are discussed which show the integration of the NN approach and a genetic algorithm used for optimization.

Abstract:
A procedure is presented for monitoring and prognostics of machine conditions using computational intelligence (CI) techniques. The machine condition is assessed through an energy-based feature, termed as ‘energy index’, extracted from the vibration signals. The progression of the ‘monitoring index’ is predicted using CI techniques, namely, recursive neural network (RNN), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and support vector regression (SVR). The proposed prediction procedures have been evaluated through benchmark datasets. The prognostic effectiveness of the techniques has been illustrated through vibration dataset of a helicopter drivetrain system gearbox. The performance of SVR was found to be better than RNN and ANFIS for the dataset used. The results are helpful in understanding the relationship of machine conditions, the corresponding indicating feature, the level of damage/degradation and their progression.

Abstract:
With row-based cooling systems, cooling units are placed directly in the row with the heat dissipating IT equipment racks. The cooling units are of similar dimensions to a standard IT rack but are oriented in the opposite direction relative to airflow. In order to achieve higher efficiencies and greater separation from the surrounding data center, air containment structures (plenums) are sometimes added to the entire row — on the rear and, potentially, the front side of the racks. This paper presents the development of a non-linear flow network model for predicting rack cooling performance in real time for such applications. Experimental work was performed to characterize the various leakage paths through IT racks and the containment systems in order to provide input data to the model. The Capture Index (CI) cooling performance metric is computed for each rack. Finally, flow network results are shown to be in good agreement with those from CFD.

Abstract:
While wind energy has been reported as the fastest growing among different sources of renewable energy, two critical issues are how to make wind energy cost effective and how to integrate it into electricity grids properly. The ability to predict power generated by wind not only allows the most effective integration of wind power into electricity grid but also makes it possible to have an optimal maintenance scheduling that can reduce cost significantly. This research investigates the practical use of Self Organizing Map (SOM) as a special type of neural network based forecasting method. In this paper, forecasting the average, maximum and minimum of one-day-ahead wind speed based on the past wind speed states of the previous 24 hours is the objective.

Abstract:
The transportation industry is a major contributor to the increase of greenhouse gasses present in the atmosphere. With the number of automobiles increasing every year, the U.S. government has implemented several regulations to reduce the environmental impact of the transportation industry. The most recent regulations increase the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) to over 50mpg by 2025. These increased fuel economy standards will save consumers money, reduce dependence on foreign oil and cut GHG emissions in half (1). In order to comply with these regulations and reduce GHG emissions, automakers are improving powertrain efficiency and diversifying their fuel sources. One way automakers are improving fleet fuel economy is by offering more efficient Compression Iginition (CI) engines. Compression ignition engines can have a 10% improvement in peak efficiency over a Spark Ignition (SI) Engine. Although CI engines have higher efficiencies, they also have higher Nitrous Oxide (NOx) emissions. One of the most effective methods for reducing NOx emissions is a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. Current methods for reducing NOx emissions using SCR rely on two NOx sensors for close loop control. These sensors add substantial costs to the production exhaust after treatment systems. This paper presents an intelligent control technique to achieve accurate prediction of NOx emissions and closed loop control without the use of expensive on board sensors. Simulation models were created to validate two artificial neural networks that aim to replace the upstream and downstream NOx sensors. The upstream neural network was trained using dynamometer data from a General Motors 1.3l turbo diesel engine. This neural network represented NOx emissions as a function of engine speed and throttle position. The downstream ANN was created using a nonlinear statespace plant model that simulates the catalyst NOx and nh3 reaction. To control the nh3 injection into the catalyst, a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) was implemented. The FLC controller had two inputs: the error function calculated from the output NOx and a predetermined NOx target as well as the predicted surface coverage from the nh3 reaction. The results from steady state and drive cycle simulations are shown. The work presented in this paper serves as a proof of concept for the sensorless SCR system that was developed as part of ERAU’s entry in EcoCAR2: Plugging Into the Future. The simulations were conducted as part of year 1 of the EcoCAR2 competition and will be further developed during years 2 and 3 on ERAU’s Series Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle.
