Abstract:
Value Analysis (VA), as it was originally conceived, was defined and applied as a cost cutting tool, in order to make products more competitive. That short scope was early identified as limiting further developments and applications of the concept, by its initial pathfinder, if no extra effort was made to take the concept into other levels of management and, consequently, of business. The many different and alternative applications of the concept and of its original methodology have taken many professional practitioners and scholars to theorize and apply new concepts and methods. We can find a tremendous number of different learning exercises and theoretical evolution from that work, but that has not yet answered many aspirations regarding the initial concept of value and value analysis. This paper aims at bringing a new and more comprehensive understanding to professional practitioners, scholars, trainers and students, about some major concepts and applied methodologies in the disciplines of Value Management (VM), Value Analysis (VA) and Value Engineering (VE).

Abstract:
The evolution of CSR is largely the history of reconciling economic goals of business and social goals of society. Relatively recent CSR related concepts “creating shared value” (CSV) and “integrated value creation” (IVC) aim at aligning interests of business and society by producing economic and social value simultaneously. The purpose of this article is to compare the CSV and IVC concepts and show their relation to CSR. In particular, we discuss whether CSV and IVC can be regarded as substitutes for CSR, varieties of CSR or completely new paradigms, and come to the conclusion that the positioning of both concepts depends on how broadly CSR is defined. We summarize major criticisms of the CSV concept and provide our own vision of the strengths and limitations of both concepts, showing why at least the CSV concept cannot supplant CSR. Comparing CSV and IVC, we focus on the differences between them and show that IVC represents a more fundamental shift in business philosophy and aims at a deeper and system-wide rather than local and fragmentary integration within society. We maintain that the CSV and IVC ideas can and should be used in strategic planning as inspiration for innovative thinking, as guidelines for increasing business competitiveness and societal well-being. We also point out the need for refining methodological frameworks for the practical implementation of the CSV and IVC ideas.

Abstract:
In the presented research article, the concept of values, their classification and their development through the educational process has been reviewed. Literature review has been used as the study method and various online and offline sources have been used to collect literature. A comparative review of literature was used as a method of analysis. On the basis of content analysis, it can be concluded that values are the preferences necessary for a person's decision which are related to his interests and needs. The concept of values is multidimensional and it is related to all aspects of life like social, political, economic, moral etc. Besides, the multidimensional approach of classification of values relates values to all aspects of life like social, political, economic, moral etc. The concept of value development can be successfully implemented through value based education. It can be done by giving priority to reinforcement, free choice and consciousness and using methods like meditation, value clarification, visual perception, role playing, storytelling, anecdotes, group singing and dance etc. and friendly behavior of the teacher.

Abstract:
Value Stream Mapping is a common tool used in a lot of instances in today’s industrieswho have adopted any kind of Lean initiatives. However, Value Stream Mapping (VSM) may not always fit to the best extent and intention of the industry applying it; therefore a need for tailoring certain aspects of it have been seen in some cases where the original tool has not been enough. However there is little research on how to adopt VSM towards the tire industry, it is the case that some adaptation is needed in order to fully map the value the chain is trying to capture as seen by some authors who use VSM on other industries. This leads to conclude that further research is needed in order to see the benefits and chal-lenges in the creating of a tailored value stream tool in order to understand how it would affect the company its applied on as well as increasing the knowledge of its capabilities and drivers for it application. The impact this research would have is to begin bridging a gap of the usage of how a Tai-lored Value Stream Mapping (TVSM) tool would affect when applied to a specific industry. For this paper, a case study within a Tire Company located in Europe, who stated that they had issues regarding their current usage and utilization of VSM, was conducted. The com-pany has projects going all over the globe but sees a lack of initiative and success without the direct involvement of its central plant. The purpose of this research is to investigate the perceived impact as well as the benefits and challenges of utilizing a company TVSM, in-stead of a standardized one, taking into consideration both particularities of the industry, as well as the culture of the firm. Also an understanding is sought to recognize the motiva-tions that drove the Tire Company to choose a tailored approach. The research was conducted as a qualitative single case study involving three different sitesbelonging to the tire industry located in Europe. It is built upon both a theoretical part, comprised by a literature review of the concepts of VSM, Lean and TVSM; and an empiri-cal part derived from the case. The Empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews as well as participant observations, supported by secondary data collected from the company in form of written documents concerning the internal training of VSM. The findings concluded that, the reasons for sustaining a TVSM are its ease of use, and ability to reach out and be understood by people with little to no training in VSM’s. The company fitted training documents would decrease the training needed and the time spent doing so. Some other benefits were the empowerment of employees and the sharing of knowledge across multiple sites in a standardized company language. Albeit with the chal-lenge of creating and upholding such documents and training, compelling the company to have experts with knowledge of VSM and the company processes and culture with the added challenge of also maintaining regularly updates as the company moves forward. Implementation of a tailored approach is practical where there has been identified that it exists a gap between different plants or departments, local or globally, regarding knowledge or experience when there is a requirement for standardisation, communication and need for change.

Abstract:
Many cases have shown that VC upgrading is strongly determined by the prevailing governance structure. However, hitherto the discussion on VC governance has been limited mainly on coordination, regulation, technology, and power; whereas socio-cultural aspects, albeit influential in determining individual behaviour, are mentioned en passant or totally neglected. Thus, this study calls for the extension of governance concept by introducing a wider institutional perspective incorporating regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive elements to portray a more realistic picture of the interaction between VC operators. Then, it applies the extended concept in case studies of dairy VCs in Indonesia, comparing the governance of successful and unsuccessful upgrading cases. Using an exploratory procedure, data were collected from observations, interviews, and author’s own experiences involved in a practical VC promotion project. The causalities between VC governance and upgrading are explained using the qualitative approach of Macro-Micro Model to accentuate the role of VC operators, their perception, and selected action in the upgrading processes. The results show that regulations and their effective enforcement are necessary; but also social relations, values, and norms, as well as orientation, common practices, and habit exert strong influences on determining the behaviour of and thus the interdependency between VC operators. Hence, further VC re-searches in similar context, i.e. rural areas where socio-cultural aspects are more influential, are to systematically integrate the extended concept of governance into the analysis in order to generate explanation, prediction, and technical recommendation on the facilitation of upgrading processes.

Schilawa, Jörg. "The value of concept maps in knowledge management." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50199.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2004<br>This study project investigates the use of concept maps in knowledge management and takes a look at both the people, and the technology sides of knowledge management. The report discusses critical aspects and theories of knowledge management. Attention is focused on the importance of human beings in creating and being of value to organisations. While some theories of knowledge management view knowledge as a further developed stage of information, there are other theories, which view tacit or individual knowledge as the most basic source of knowledge. Despite this difference, and other dissimilarities, certain issues concerning knowledge creation and amplification through communication appear in both theories. A detailed discussion of the conversion process, and the knowledge spiral, explains and reinforces the importance of communication. The discussion touches on issues such as the influence of company culture towards the facilitation of sharing attitudes, supportive leadership styles and organisational structure. The continuous exchange of knowledge and the acceptance of new methods, such as best practise, promote the creation of a learning organisation that concentrates on the value of human beings, their needs, and their individual fulfilment. Challenges and obstacles of knowledge management such as experts seeing their sharing of knowledge as a hindrance of personal competitive advantage or work security will be examined. Although the logistics of knowledge management are very complex it is extremely beneficial for organisations for creation of extra value, the speeding up of processes, and the creation of a better work environment. Despite the importance of the people side of knowledge management, a technical infrastructure and a sophisticated knowledge management system are essential. General information about knowledge management systems and information are given, including objectives, trends, and an example of a standard technical infrastructure. Concept map technology is the interface between the computer system and the user. Although concept maps are not a new invention, they are becoming more popular due to new technical possibilities. All kinds of knowledge can be saved in concepts, connections, links and underlying documents. Their cognitive structure enables instant use without extensive guidelines or instructions. A further advantage is the generality of concept maps, making them applicable to various environments and industries. To increase awareness for concept map applications, differences between two concept mapping software tools are briefiy discussed. One application concentrates on maps, the other application aims to enable further functionality. The empirical part of the study project evaluates the use of concept maps in the banking and insurance environment of Sparkasse Sudholstein. The company currently has about 1400 employees and provides a knowledge based service, which made it very suitable for the research project. The technology infrastructure of Sparkasse Sudholstein contains certain distinctive features due to security reasons. The company has a user interface with different applications, various internal databases, external databases for the discretion of customer data, and several other external information and knowledge services. All the factors above make Sparkasse Sudholstein to an ideal candidate for the use of concept map applications. A survey by means of a questionnaire was undertaken at the headquarters of the company to determine the current situation of their knowledge management system. The most popular knowledge sources in use were the Lotus Notes "info-tiles", as well as direct communication amongst colleagues. It was further recognised that concept maps are known by almost half the participants of the questionnaire and that people are very open to new techniques of knowledge management. Various concept maps were created with company experts to evaluate the value and possible applications of concept maps in the company. The results showed that concept maps are not able to fulfil all the tasks of a knowledge management system, because they do not yet provide enough functionality. However, concept maps do have an essential significance in knowledge gathering, job descriptions, trainings and seminars, presentations, as discussion support tools, and project work such as workflow management. The advantages of concept maps are their cognitive use and understanding, their self-explanatory structure, the interactivity with the user, and the implementation of multi-media in combination with special layout features. In conclusion, it can be said that concept maps can be successfully applied to selective areas in companies. Concept maps should be implemented into a broader knowledge management system and combined with other traditional methods of knowledge management. The use of concept maps will create value for companies by increasing efficiency, effectiveness, as well as the overall performance of the company. If concept maps are combined successfully with other knowledge management measures, sustainable competitive advantage could be created for the organisation.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the idea of adopting the 'value point of view', from which value is seen as playing a central role in human affairs, and the study of value is regarded as a distinct subject area. The field of value is reviewed and analysed, an empirical approach is developed, and exploratory studies of children's values are conducted. The involvement of values in psychology is examined, and the scope of the field of value is illustrated through a wide-ranging review of the philosophical and social psychological work that falls within it. An outline sketch of the field is made in which four branches are identified, and the main issues are discussed. The empirical branch is explored in more detail through the development of an empirical approach to the study of value. The relationship of this approach to the main issues in the field is examined. The focus is then narrowed on to the development of values. The potential benefits of seeing child development from the value point of view are discussed, and previous studies of children's values are reviewed. Some aspects of the empirical approach are put into practice through a series of exploratory studies. These illustrate the usefulness of the approach in guiding and supporting studies of children's values. It is suggested that the approach, allied to the appropriate techniques, is capable of identifying 'values attached', 'criteria applied', and 'ultimate values', thus providing insights into children’s value networks and into the process of evaluation. The approach points the way to an area of research of considerable size and diversity. Some of the ways in which this area can be explored are suggested, along with the methodological problems that might be encountered. The main implications of the exploratory studies are outlined. These include the observation that while values are greatly influenced by shared factors, the particular ways in which people's values are organised and conceptualised represent important differences. This is one reason why both idiographic and nomothetic studies of value are required for a full understanding of values. Criticisms of the approach and of the techniques used are considered. The theoretical assumptions underlying the criticisms are examined, and compared with those of the approach. It is suggested that the issues involved should not hold back the development of the approach.

Abstract:
Real-time sensitive network applications are emerging and require ultra-low latency to reach the desired QoS. A main issue that contributes to latency is excessive buffering at intermediate switches and routers. Existing queuing strategies that aim to reduce buffering induced latency typically apply a single queue AQM that does not support service differentiation and treats all packets equally. The recently proposed per packet value framework utilizes a packet value marker and a packet value aware AQM to solve this issue by supporting service differentiation in a single queue and introducing more advanced policies for resource sharing. However, the per packet value framework is implemented and tested in a software environment with no possibility to study the performance on hardware equipment.  This thesis utilizes P4 to design and implement a packet value marker on dataplane programmable devices. The marker should be capable of supporting multiple resource sharing policies, following resource sharing policies accurately, and not being the bottleneck in the network. A target-independent packet value marker is designed and modified with target-dependent P4 constructs to fit the implementation requirements of a Tofino switch and a Netronome smart NIC. An accurate Tofino implementation using this approach is difficult to achieve because of a complicated random number generation process and resource limitation. Evaluation using a testbed with a Netronome marker shows that the marker achieves desired functionality with accurate packet value distribution for throughputs larger than 5000 Kbps. However, the challenge of concurrent packet processing combined with a smart NIC that does not have powerful packet processing cores results in the marker having lower throughput and higher latency than expected. The evaluation also shows that resource limitation in terms of available memory and the number of supported policies affects the maximum number of supported users. We also ported a version to a switching ASIC with limited functionality due to the restrictions of the hardware platform. Our evaluation also provides insights into how such a marking scheme performs on different hardware targets and the limitation imposed by such target specific architecture.<br>Realtids Känsliga nätverksapplikationer utvecklas och kräver ultra-låg latens för att nå önskad QoS.

Abstract:
This paper is dealing with the problem of steering the conceptual design by value. Indeed, the preliminary phase of the design process, which generates the innovative concepts that will be developed in detail, already defines broadly the created value of an innovation project. Contrarily to the detailed design that consists in design solutions refinement for well defined performances increase, the conceptual design is characterized by the fact that the design objects, like the design problems, the design concepts and knowledge, are not frozen, known or precised, and have to be defined progressively in a value creation way for customers and stakeholders. Since there are few works on this issue, we try then to suggest a conceptual design process based on the capture and evaluation of the generated intermediate objects for the maximization of the created value of this phase, and so of an innovative project. A descriptive model, a value model and a prescriptive production model of the intermediate objects are thus built and explained.

Abstract:
Abstract With most industries intensifying efforts towards net zero carbon emissions, new upstream oil and gas developments strive to deliver sustainable facilities design with zero continuous emissions from day one. It can be challenging however, for fields that face high subsurface uncertainties, laden with facilities and gas export constraints. This paper provides insights into series of rigorous techno-commercial considerations and outcome of a carbon abatement-specific concept assessment exercise that adopted Design-to-Value (D2V) approach. Design-to-Value approach has been used in various industries to systematically develop optimum concept that maximizes value creation. Starting with initial Target Value setting, Minimum Technical Requirements are identified for facilities design to support Zero Routine Flaring (ZRF) outcome, before being rolled up into abatement concept options. With further deliberation on feasibility and associated risks, Value Staircase is generated to comprehensively evaluate all options from technical and commercial perspectives in a sequential manner, where a weighted-scoring process finally brings all feasible options towards Concept Select. D2V approach was used on an upstream oil field development at front end loading stage which consists of a Central Processing Platform that ties back to a Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) unit, with excess associated gas of 3MMscf/d for 10 years. Lacking subsurface maturity for gas injection with little gas monetization opportunity and aggravated by constraints on gas evacuation through nearby facilities, it is difficult to meet ZRF commitment. Initial Target Value setting drove the direction of abatement concept brainstorming, followed by identification of specific process and utilities functions to focus on. Aiming to avoid routine flaring, abatement concept identification revolved around the design of gas recovery system, flaring system, power generation and corresponding pipeline and electrical cable configurations with FSO. D2V's iterative, progressive value-risk trade off exercise resulted in identification of seven (7) viable abatement concepts including a phased gas export strategy and phased Vapor Recovery Unit (VRU) design, alongside eight other potential concepts that were not shortlisted but heavily deliberated. From techno-commercial highlights observable at one glance from the Value Staircase, a weighted-scoring process finally led to a full abatement concept selection with implementation strategy. Robustness and broadness of D2V approach which covers technical, commercial and risk elements have made a difference in the quality and pace of abatement concept identification and selection process. Methodology to generate carbon abatement-specific strategy that supports business needs must evolve as swiftly as the environmental forces that drive global sustainability efforts. Strong managerial aspirations in the sustainability agenda and creative adoption of aggressive problem-solving approaches across high-impact industries such as oil and gas are vital. The approaches outlined in this paper contribute to the global continuous effort towards new investments that fulfil net zero carbon emissions targets.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to gain a deeper understanding of the concept of shadow destinations. What added value do shadow destinations create for the main attraction in a region? How can a shadow destination create a value of its own? Methodology – The study was constructed as a qualitative multiple-case study. Five different shadow destinations in Sweden were selected based on stratified selection. Sweden was divided into five regions, and one destination from each region was identified. Data were collected through interviews, observations and written materials during 2019–2020. Findings – The findings show that shadow destinations are highly dependent on some sort of main attraction in the region. The results also show that there exist different types of relationships between the shadow destinations and the main attractions. The results also show that shadow destinations can create value for tourists in order to become more important for tourism in the region, as well as to become main destinations by themselves. Contribution – The theoretical contribution from this study shows that the concept of shadow destinations has not been addressed to any great extent in tourism research and that this concept requires further studies. This study makes a contribution to tourism development of shadow destinations.

Abstract:
Non-standard inferences are particularly useful in the bottom-up construction of ontologies in description logics. One of the more common non-standard reasoning tasks is the most specific concept (msc) for an ABox-individual. In this paper we present similar non-standard reasoning task: most specific concepts for models (model-mscs). We show that, although they look similar to ABox-mscs their computational behaviour can be different. We present constructions for model-mscs in FL₀ and FLE with cyclic TBoxes and for ALC∪∗ with acyclic TBoxes. Since subsumption in FLE with cyclic TBoxes has not been examined previously, we present a characterization of subsumption and give a construction for the least common subsumer in this setting.

Abstract:
In this paper we present and develop the concept of the “weather information value chain” as a means for understanding, discussing, and analyzing the socioeconomic value of Earth Observations, Science, and Services (ESOSS). To begin to formalize a process for building and evaluating value chains we propose the “Value of Information Characterization and Evaluation,” or VOICE approach. The VOICE approach provides a framework to gather and organize the relevant data to rigorously tell the end-to-end story of any given weather information chain or explain explicitly how the information relates to decisions, outcomes, and values. This can facilitate both retrospective and prospective evaluations of existing and planned services, respectively. The value chain concept can be used for multiple purposes, as illustrated by the case studies included in this study. These purposes include, for example, facilitating decision-making; enhancing collaboration among experts from different disciplines; framing and synthesizing information and understanding; and communicating with external users and audiences. The seven case studies provided by contributing authors include U.S. and international studies as well as applied and theoretical work.

Abstract:
In this work we consider the inference problem of computing (minimal) rewritings of concept descriptions using defined concepts from a terminology. We introduce a general framework for this problem. For the small description logic FL₀, which provides us with conjunction and value restrictions, we show that the decision problem induced by the minimal rewriting problem is NP-complete.

Full text
Abstract:
Computing the most specific concept (msc) is an inference task that can be used to support the 'bottom-up' construction of knowledge bases for KR systems based on description logics. For description logics that allow for number restrictions or existential restrictions, the msc need not exist, though. Previous work on this problem has concentrated on description logics that allow for universal value restrictions and number restrictions, but not for existential restrictions. The main new contribution of this paper is the treatment of description logics with existential restrictions. More precisely, we show that, for the description logic ALE (which allows for conjunction, universal value restrictions, existential restrictions, negation of atomic concepts) the msc of an ABox-individual only exists in case of acyclic ABoxes. For cyclic ABoxes, we show how to compute an approximation of the msc. Our approach for computing the (approximation of the) msc is based on representing concept descriptions by certain trees and ABoxes by certain graphs, and then characterizing instance relationships by homomorphisms from trees into graphs. The msc/approximation operation then mainly corresponds to unraveling the graphs into trees and translating them back into concept descriptions.

Baader, Franz, and Oliver Fernández Gil. Decidability and Complexity of Threshold Description Logics Induced by Concept Similarity Measures. Technische Universität Dresden, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.229.

Full text
Abstract:
In a recent research paper, we have proposed an extension of the lightweight Description Logic (DL) EL in which concepts can be defined in an approximate way. To this purpose, the notion of a graded membership function m, which instead of a Boolean membership value 0 or 1 yields a membership degree from the interval [0; 1], was introduced. Threshold concepts can then, for example, require that an individual belongs to a concept C with degree at least 0:8. Reasoning in the threshold DL T EL(m) obtained this way of course depends on the employed graded membership function m. The paper defines a specific such function, called deg, and determines the exact complexity of reasoning in T EL(deg). In addition, it shows how concept similarity measures (CSMs) ~ satisfying certain properties can be used to define graded membership functions m~, but it does not investigate the complexity of reasoning in the induced threshold DLs T EL(m~). In the present paper, we start filling this gap. In particular, we show that computability of ~ implies decidability of T EL(m~), and we introduce a class of CSMs for which reasoning in the induced threshold DLs has the same complexity as in T EL(deg).

Abstract:
The article analyzes some theoretical and practical aspects of creativity. The author shares his opinion that the concept of creativity belongs to the fundamental concepts of philosophy, psychology, literature, art, pedagogy. Creativity is one of the important concepts of the theory of journalism. The author does not agree with the extended definition of creativity. He believes that journalistic activity becomes creativity when it is free and associated with the creation and establishment of new national and universal values, with the highest intensity of intellectual and moral strength of the journalist, when journalism is a manifestation of civic position, when this activity combines professional skills and perfect literary form. The author also believes that literary skill and the skill of a journalist are not identical concepts, because literary skill is a component of journalistic skill.

Baader, Franz, and Ralf Küsters. Matching Concept Descriptions with Existential Restrictions Revisited. Aachen University of Technology, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.98.

Full text
Abstract:
An abridged version of this technical report has been submitted to KR 2000. Matching of concepts against patterns is a new inference task in Description Logics, which was originally motivated by applications of the CLASSIC system. Consequently, the work on this problem was until now mostly concerned with sublanguages of the Classic language, which does not allow for existential restrictions. Motivated by an application in chemical process engineering, which requires a description language with existential restrictions, this paper investigates the matching problem in Description Logics with existential restrictions. It turns out that existential restrictions make matching more complex in two respects. First, whereas matching in sublanguages of CLASSIC is polynomial, deciding the existence of matchers is an NP-complete problem in the presence of existential restrictions. Second, whereas in sublanguages of Classic solvable matching problems have a unique least matcher, this is not the case for languages with existential restrictions. Thus, it is not a priori clear which of the (possibly infinitely many) matchers should be returned by a matching algorithm. After determining the complexity of the decision problem, the present paper first investigates the question of what are 'interesting' sets of matchers, and then describes algorithms for computing these sets for the languages EL (which allows for conjunction and existential restrictions) and ALE (which additionally allows for value restrictions, primitive negation, and the bottom concept).
