Abstract:
The end of the 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century were marked by enormous social, economic and political challenges in Africa and in other developing contexts. This was partly due to the effects of a global economic recession and arguably failed national economic structural adjustment programmes, rampant public sector corruption and a rise in authoritarianism, as states tried to keep restive populations under control. Zimbabwe saw intense political struggles between the government and various agents of social change who were pressing for democratic space. This study specifically investigates how the news media in Zimbabwe played a critical role in actively mobilizing for political change and as a site for opposition politics and agitation during moments of turmoil and repression from 1997-2010. Zimbabwe’s news media, particularly privately owned newspapers, provided more accessible platforms for robust debate that challenged the status quo in the troubled state. Not only did the private press in Zimbabwe successfully oppose the one-party state after the country attained independence in 1980, they were even more significant at the height of the economic and political governance crisis, also known as the Zimbabwe Crisis, from 2000-2010. My research focuses on the unprecedented ways in which newspaper journalism helped the cause of democratisation in Zimbabwe. The research is designed as a qualitative case study of The Daily News, a leading private newspaper whose masthead was aptly worded: “telling it like it is”. Apart from content illustration of purposely-selected headlines of newspaper articles, it was based on semi-structured interviews conducted with 51 respondents, who were mainly politicians and journalists living in Zimbabwe. I also draw upon my experience and observations of having worked for the Daily News during this eventful period. The research methods gave me access to primary data on the institutional and personal experiences of a private newspaper and its journalists, who reflected and affected the political crisis in Zimbabwe. The main aim was to investigate why and how news journalists working for a prominent private medium came to oppose an undemocratic state under conditions of repression. The analytical lens of alternative media facilitates a construction of how The Daily News and its journalists experienced, reported, confronted and navigated state authoritarianism in a historical moment of political turmoil. The study discusses the complex relationships between the independent and privately-owned press, the main opposition political party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and civil society organizations. Such groups include the labour movement and the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), the main constitutional reform movement. This dissertation argues that in the struggles for political change that ensued between the opposition forces and the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party, The Daily News provided form and solidity to oppositional and civic voices that were previously shut out by the dominant public media. The significance of this study is that existing scholarship on media and communication studies in Zimbabwe do not adequately capture these experiences. The agency of such media institutions and journalists has rarely been investigated. Further, the research provides an original analysis of the operations of The Daily News and its journalists in the context of highly undemocratic political moment, inclusive of the trials and tribulations, such as assaults, arrests, detentions, and office bombings, civil and criminal trials. Arguably, this study fills an important lacuna in scholarship on the role of the news media in democratising states during moments of political instability. The study thus contributes to knowledge on the experiences of alternative, opposition, activist and often radical journalists in Zimbabwe, where they championed ordinary citizens’ stories instead of focussing entirely on expert views of the crisis. By embracing alternative media theory as the analytic lens of the study, there is arguably a normative contribution to knowledge through the use of the framework in a democratising context to broaden the understanding of the role of the news media in societies going through turbulent political transitions.

Abstract:
The media, which help define what we think and our roles in the society, have a crucial role to project both men and women’s issues so as to change people’s perceptions and stereotypes about the role men and women play in the society. There is need, therefore, to ensure gender equality in the operations of the media so that issues to do with both men and women get adequate and equal coverage. This study on the reportage of the land redistribution exercise in Zimbabwe has, however, exposed the gendered nature of the operations of the media, particularly in the news production process. It provides that, overally, the news discourse is a masculine narrative whose androcentric form is a result of, and is protected by, claims to ‘objectivity,’ ‘professionalism’, ‘impartiality’ and the pursuit of a journalistic routine system that hegemonically prioritises men’s issues over those of women. The situation, as the research shows, has not been helped by journalists’ incapacity to do thematic appreciation of issues and their over-inclination towards a simplistic event-based journalism that fails to question policies as they are enacted and implemented in gender-skewed processes. The lack of gender policies, the operations of patriarchy and the pursuit of a journalistic routine system that sees nothing wrong with the ostracisation of women issues are very fundamental findings that the research uses in its attempts to explain why the gender equality discourse was left out of the news reports about the land reform exercise in Zimbabwe.

Abstract:
The social meaning of television news has been under transformation since the successes of cable news in the final years of the previous century. In their attempts to preserve viewership and to remain relevant, traditional broadcast news outlets increasingly emulate the conventions of cable news. Instead of retaining audiences, the result has been declining news content and a continued loss of viewers. Amid these industry transformations, the concept of “journalist” continues to undergo change. This evolution of the news allows for a decidedly unique response to news programming in The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. Though advertised as a half-hour comedy show, it has established itself as a consistent re-teller and producer of news, only possible in a postmodern era of journalism after objectivity. Amid the industry’s shift in priorities from objectivity and reporting to influencing, framing and re-telling the news, The Daily Show is considered as much an example of journalism as many of the shows currently in the news sphere. Although our society is currently saturated with information, this information often fails to penetrate the surface of the issues covered. Too much information is as paralytic as ignorance. Recently, attention has shifted towards a re-evaluation of television news into something that will both help the public find the information they are searching for and give them the tools to make sense of and utilize that information. This concept of journalism as tool is present in every episode of The Daily Show. The show encourages viewers to peel away the layers of mediation of traditional newscasts, to recognize substance and the lack thereof, and become active consumers of information rather than passive receptacles submersed in irrelevant information. The Daily Show proves that a news show can inform, entertain and teach audiences how to critically process television as an informational medium.

Gandari, Jonathan. "An examination of how organisational policy and news professionalism are negotiated in a newsroom: a case study of Zimbabwe's Financial gazette." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002884.

Full text
Abstract:
The construction of journalistic professionalism in Zimbabwe has stirred debate among scholars. Critics have argued that professionalism has been compromised by the stifling media laws in Zimbabwe as well as the extra legal measures the state has enforced to control the press. Some have also argued that a new kind of journalism must be emerging in the Zimbabwean newsroom as journalism try to cope with the political and economic pressures bedeviling the country. Much of this criticism however, has not been based on close interrogation of professionalism from the perspective of the journalists in any particular newsroom. It is against this background that this study examines the constructions of professionalism at the Financial Gazette. In particular it explores the meaning of professionalism through interrogating the journalistic practices the journalists consider during the process of news production in the context of overwhelming state power. In undertaking this examination, the study draws primarily on qualitative research methods, particularly observation and multi-layered individual in-depth interviews. As the study demonstrates, the interrogation of professionalism from the perspective of newsroom practices uncovers the complex manner in which professionalism is negotiated in the Gazette’s newsroom located in a country undergoing transition in Democracy. The study establishes that when measured against normative canons of journalistic professionalism the Gazette is deviating from such tenets as public service and watchdog journalism. As the study indicates, perhaps unbeknown to the respondents, the ruling ZANU PF party hegemony is reproduced at the Gazette through choice of news values such as sovereignty and patriotism all euphemisms for ruling party‘s slogans.

Abstract:
The study sets out to examine the television coverage of the 2002 presidential campaign in Zimbabwe by examining the extent to which the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation fulfilled the mandate of public service broadcasting. The primary objective of this study is to assess how ZBC television newscasts mediated pluralistic politics in the coverage of the country's presidential election campaign, in line with the normative public sphere principles. The thesis comprises seven chapters organized, first, with an introductory chapter, which provides the general background of the study. The chapter offers the rationale for the focus on TV rather than other media fomls . There are two theoretical and contextual chapters in which the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods is explained and findings are presented. Finally, the conclusion offers recommendations about the form broadcasting might take to fulfil a public service mandate and these include the strengthening of the public service broadcasting model along normative public sphere principles. The findings of the analysed election newscasts confirm that ZBC television election news was constructed in favour of ZANU PF at the expense of voices from other social and political constituencies.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study, a cluster analysis of news stories published in the Botswana Daily News during the period January - December 2004 was undertaken. The study was exploratory in nature and sought to find out what topics were predominant during the study period. The approach we adopted can be divided into three phases, namely data collection, document pre-processing, and cluster analysis. The data used in the study was downloaded from the Botswana Daily News website using a simple program developed specifically for that purpose. Document pre-processing was concerned with transforming the raw documents into a format that could be directly operated upon by the various clustering algorithms. The documents themselves were represented using the vector space model, with the tf.idf term weighting scheme. We experimented with three clustering approaches, namely, direct k-way clustering, k-way clustering through repeated bisections, and agglomerative clustering. Agglomerative clustering performed poorly, and we thus discarded its results. Direct k-way clustering and k-way clustering through repeated bisections produced similar results, though the former performed better in terms of external isolation and internal cohesion of the clusters produced. Consequently, we only retained the results from direct k-way clustering, and subsequently performed a quarterly analysis of our corpus using only the direct k-way clustering algorithm. Analysis of the complete corpus identified a number of topics that were prevalent over the study period. Interestingly, a quarterly analysis of the corpus revealed other topics whose prevalence appears to have been limited to certain parts of the year.

Abstract:
In this thesis we present econometric models and empirical features of intra-daily (high frequency) stock market data. We focus on the measurement of news impacts on stock market activity, forecasts of bid-ask spreads and the modeling of volatility measures on intraday intervals. First, we quantify market reactions to an intraday stock-specific news flow. Using pre-processed data from an automated news analytics tool we analyze relevance, novelty and direction signals and indicators for company-specific news. Employing a high-frequency VAR model based on 20 second data of a cross-section of stocks traded at the London Stock Exchange we find distinct responses in returns, volatility, trading volumes and bid-ask spreads due to news arrivals. In a second analysis we introduce a long memory autoregressive conditional Poisson (LMACP) model to model highly persistent time series of counts. The model is applied to forecast quoted bid-ask spreads, a key parameter in stock trading operations. We discuss theoretical properties of LMACP models and evaluate rolling window forecasts of quoted bid-ask spreads for stocks traded at NYSE and NASDAQ. We show that Poisson time series models significantly outperform forecasts from ARMA, ARFIMA, ACD and FIACD models in this context. Finally, we address the problem of measuring volatility on small 20 second to 5 minute intra-daily intervals in an optimal way. In addition to the standard realized volatility approaches we construct volatility measures by integrating spot volatility estimates that include information on observations outside of the intra-daily intervals of interest. Comparing the alternative volatility measures in a simulation study we find that spot volatility-based measures minimize the RMSE in the case of small intervals.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes how the news blogs Daily Kos and Power line construct news presented from an ideological viewpoint. Specifically the types of evidence used by the blogs to assert their viewpoints and their intended audiences were analyzed. This thesis utilized theory from Jean Francois Lyotard to explain how images and text were used by the blogs to legitimate their ideological narrative. Edwin Black's theory of second . ' persona was used to analyze the intended audience of the blogs. The ideology of the two blogs was described by the political spectrum developed by Barry Clark. The analysis of the two blogs found that both blogs utilized various sources to legitimize their narratives. The two blogs constructed news stories in stylistically similar manners. News constructed in this manner reinforces ideological viewpoints and manifests itself in a partisan electorate and partisan politicians unwilling to be flexible with their political positions. This inflexibility is not beneficial in a democracy that needs compromise in order to function.

Abstract:
This thesis employs Jurgen Habermas’ theory of public sphere as an analytical tool to consider the role played by two popular private newspapers in the struggle for democracy in Zimbabwe, one case from colonial Rhodesia and the other from the post-colonial era. It argues that, functioning under repressive political regimes and in the absence of credible opposition political parties or as a platform for opposition political parties, the African Daily News, between 1956-1964 and the Daily News, between 1999-2003, played a fundamental role in opening up spaces for political freedom in the country. Each was ultimately shut down by the respective government of the time. The newspapers allowed reading publics the opportunity to participate in politics by providing a daily analytical alternative, to that offered by the government and the state media, in relation to the respective political crises that unfolded in each of these periods. The thesis examines both the information policies pursued by the different governments and the way these affected the functioning of private media in their quest to provide an ‘ideal’ public sphere. It explores issues of ownership, funding and editorial policies in reference to each case and how these affected the production of news and issue coverage. It considers issues of class and geography in shaping public response. The thesis also focuses on state reactions to the activities of these newspapers and how these, in turn, affected the activities of private media actors. Finally, it considers the cases together to consider the meanings of the closing down of these newspapers during the two eras under discussion and contributes to the debates about print media vis-a-vis the new forms of media that have come to the fore.

Abstract:
Text in English
This thesis explores the representation of political conflict in the Zimbabwean press with a specific focus on the The Herald, The Sunday Mail, Daily News and The Standard. The thesis sought to unpack the representation of political conflict in the four selected newspapers and to compare and contrast state-owned and privately-owned press representation of power, succession struggles and factionalism in ZANU PF and opposition MDC. The theory is undergirded by the framing theory and data was analysed using Critical Discourse Analysis. The thesis contends that the representation of political conflict in Zimbabwe was sensational and polarized. With clearly separate agendas, the government controlled press, The Herald and The Sunday Mail; and the privately owned Daily News and The Standard, have drawn upon different framing practices to represent political conflict in Zimbabwe. By selecting to report on a particular issue and silencing another, through choice of certain headlines, and vocabulary employed, they have produced a construction of events in political parties that satisfy their political agendas in an increasingly polarized political environment. The newspapers became associated with diverging political opinions, showing political parties they support. On the one hand, the state-funded media represented ZANU PF in positive light while the opposition, particularly the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was represented negatively, mainly depicting the party as harbouring a regime change agenda. On the other hand, the privately-owned press was critical of the ruling party, ZANU PF and blamed the party for economic problems, corruption, mis-rule, and abuse of human rights. As a result of this partisan representation of political reality by the two press camps, they became directly implicated in the conflicts thereby ceasing to be credible sources of information. This clearly illustrates the enormity of challenges faced by the press in political conflicts in politically polarised environments such as Zimbabwe. The thesis argues that when reporting political conflicts ideological considerations of the press take precedents at the expense of the informational and educational mandate of the press as ethics and professional interests of the press are pushed to the back stage. Contrary to the view that the press is a neutral and impersonal purveyor of information, it is an active participant in the framing of political conflicts and its framing is ideological. The study has broadened the body of knowledge on the framing of political conflicts in polarised political environments.

The study analysed the language used by The Herald and Daily News journalists to report on the marriage conflict between the former Prime Minister Morgan Richard Tsvangirai of Zimbabwe and Ms Locardia Karimatsenga. The Herald is a state-owned newspaper and Daily News is a privately-owned newspaper. An analysis of the marriage conflict enabled readers, in a magnified way, to see how ideological differences between the public and private media in Zimbabwe are represented. The study examined the similarities and/or differences in the manner in which the marriage conflict was represented in both papers. The study also examined the language used in the headlines, established the sources used and evaluated the ideological stances of the two newspapers. The study utilised the case study design. The researcher only focused on articles which were published during the month when the former Prime Minister married Ms Elizabeth Macheka in September 2012. It was also the month when the media published many articles about the marriage saga. Seventeen articles were analysed, eleven from The Herald and six from the Daily News. Framing and Representation theories were deemed appropriate to analyse the articles. Critical Discourse Analysis and semiotic analysis were used to analyse the selected articles and visuals which accompanied them. The findings of the study revealed that The Herald reports tended to be biased against the Prime Minister, while the Daily News was more objective in its use of language.

Abstract:
The study critically explored the language of reportage of the Zimbabwe Land Reform programme as presented in selected Shona and English newspapers in Zimbabwe. The study focused on Kwayedza, The Herald, The Daily News and The Daily Mirror. The objective was to find out whether or not the verbal and visual languages used in reporting the Land Reform programme left readers more knowledgeable about the programme, and then adopt a critical attitude towards the Land Reform exercise. The study used qualitative textual analysis to unpack the language frames used in representing Land Reform in the selected newspapers. Some relevant critical voices from readers were also enlisted in order to support or complicate interpretations of how Land Reform was portrayed in the selected stories. Kwayedza and The Herald unequivocally supported the Land Reform. This official stance was contested in Chapter Four in which The Daily News adopted an ideological position opposed to both the idea of the Land Reform and the confiscatory way the land was repossessed. The Daily News’ extremely negative criticism of the Land Reform was challenged and then modified in The Daily Mirror. The Daily Mirror criticised both the government’s extremely supportive view of the Land Reform. The Daily Mirror also openly criticised The Daily News for refusing to acknowledge the historical inevitability and necessity of the Land Reform. The Daily Mirror advanced a perspective that suggested that Land Reform programme should benefit the masses more than the elites. It was argued that in contexts of political change such as that of Zimbabwe, newspapers take a stance and support particular ideological interests.

Gadzikwa, Wellington. "Tabloidisation and the coverage of political issues in Zimbabwe - the case of Joice Mujuru." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/24739.

Full text
Abstract:
The study critically explored the tabloidisation of political news in Zimbabwe by focussing on the coverage of the expulsion of Joice Mujuru from ZANU PF and government by selected newspapers. The study analysed three national dailies across the ownership divide; The Herald, Daily News and NewsDay. The objective of the study was to establish whether or not the decline in standards of journalism and performance in Zimbabwe could be attributed to tabloidisation. The study employed a qualitative methodology through qualitative content analysis and in-depth interviews to assess whether the framing reflected tabloid or broadsheet journalism styles. The framing of Joice Mujuru by The Herald was pejorative and derisive as she was depicted as corrupt, traitor, inept and a simplistic thinker who cannot handle issues to do with statecraft. Daily News sympathised with Joice Mujuru as a victim of chauvinistic factional politics in ZANU PF, especially, after the death of her husband, General Solomon Mujuru. The study argued that Joice was also depicted as a brave leader who could challenge for the office of the president, if she formed a coalition with MDC –T leader Morgan Tsvangirai. Daily News sought to counter all the negative framing of Joice Mujuru by The Herald. NewsDay framing was sympathetic, like Daily News but was more inclined on creating an image of a moderate leader in Mujuru, one who would be acceptable to all Zimbabweans because she had the critical liberation war credentials that Tsvangirai lacked and Mujuru’s perceived abilities to extricate the country from the economic challenges by mending relationships with the West. Despite the diametrically opposed frames in terms of The Herald versus Daily News and NewsDay, all the newspapers are undergoing the damaging process of tabloidisation by employing tabloid styles and formatting in their political news coverage through sensationalism, trivialisation and emotionalism. It was argued that the media needs self-introspection and recommitment to ethical and objective journalism as the watchdogs of society.

The interview methodology was used in this study. Forty-five journalists from nine news departments of United Daily News were surveyed, which included departments of politics news, economics news, technology news, sports news, entertainment news, culture news, travel news, family news and city news. The interviews were conducted during April 2001. Data analysis was based on the interview records and other research papers. Conclusions and suggestions were proposed according to final results. The results of this research are: 1.The information need of the journalists in United Daily News mainly arose from their works, such as: reports writing, confirmation of the validity of news, and enhancement of their news sensitivity. 2.The sources of information mostly included the interpersonal communication, the information center of United Daily News, and the Internet resources. 3.The motivation of journalists for using news Web sites are caused, when they are: writing news, needing urgent information, not being able to interview by themselves, wanting to confirm the validity of news from other organizations, are writing the news about past events, and browsing daily news for updating. 4.Browsing the update news on news websites had become the journalists’ daily work. Journalists went to the news websites more than once a day. 5.The news websites that were usually used by journalists are China Times, UDN News, ET Today, UDN Data, Central News Agency, Yahoo! News, Kimo! News, CNN, TTimes, New York Times, cnYES.com, and Yam News. 6.When selecting the news Web sites, there were several factors affected the journalists’ decision, including the connecting and dealing speed of news websites, the quality, quantity, authority of the contents, the update frequency, the convenience of search interface, accuracy of search results, etc. 7.When using news websites, journalists often faced some difficulties, such as inexperienced searching and limited coverage of back issues. Sometimes the journalists even had to pay for contents. 8.The journalists’ information seeking behavior on news websites were browsing and searching. When they had to use news websites, they browsed the update news first, and then read the news, which related to their work. If there were some related links of news, they linked to the news for exploring novelties. When searching for certain news, the journalists typed one or two keywords in the search box. Few of them used the advanced search function. 9.The journalists believed that the updated news service from news Web sites was very helpful. However, they considered that the updated news were mostly repeated and not depth enough. Some of the news could be one-sided statement. The journalists suggested that news websites had better to provide more value-added functions, such as variety of resources, classification of news, etc. Further more, it is necessary to digitize the news materials. 10.News website was one of the information channels that the journalists used. They did not depend on the news provided by news websites. The journalists needed comprehensive and professional information to help their job, and gathering the events by themselves. In terms of information needs for updated news, the journalists were satisfied with the news websites. On the contrary, there were less satisfaction on their information needs of previous news.

This paper deals with the news coverage of Avian Influenza in the New York Times, the United Daily, and the Apple Daily, and it compares among the three newspapers how they represent the risk events. The thesis consists of two major parts, quantity analysis and quality analysis. The former examines the different attributes of the three newspapers according to the results of statistics. The latter explores the important narrative strategies and elements used in the news texts. A tendency found in the quantity analysis is the three newspapers’ generally lack of prospect ability. They pay attention to risk events and produce lots of relevant reports only when heavy casualties occur in the risks. That is, the number of report about the risk is noticeably increasing only after the risk has occurred and caused high casualties. In addition, this paper analyzes the news text by dividing them into nine categories, demonstrating that the three newspapers show no difference in determining the “News Topic” and in using “News Sources”. But the differences exist in the “News Sections”, “News Genres”, “Wordage”, “Writing angles”, “Experts”, and “Charts and Tables”. The results of narrative analysis show contrasting narrative strategies in the three newspapers. The New York Times is characterized by its varied introduction words, especially the story-telling way of narration. Besides, the deep explanations, comments, and background conditions of the event are given in the news text. The United Daily News is characterized by its designated topics of Avian Influenza and the first-hand information reported by the correspondents. Also, it pays more attention to the social psychological aspects and domesticates the foreign risk events. The Apple Daily, the most sensational one, is characterized by the negative news titles, brief descriptions and multi-spots information. However, the simple rules and clear charts about how to avoid risks and how the risks occur provide the readers with feasible and persuasive suggestions. In the conclusion, this paper suggests that: 1. The different strategies of the three newspapers reflect the different media logics and serve the different functions of communication. 2. The delayed high-tech society (Taiwan) leads to the lack of the multiple news sources in the news coverage. 3. The news topics of risk events in the three newspapers all draw on the harms and deaths, no matter their different cultural contexts. 4. The risk knowledge has not been equalized among the public. In other words, the news coverage of the risk events has no difference in using uniformed sources. That is, the role of defining risks largely falls on the experts instead of the lay people.

Mandarin Daily News has been established since 1948. Extending the spirit of “The May Fourth Movement”, it plays an important role in popularizing the use of mandarin, education of language, and promotion of children’s literature. The history of it could be viewed as the epitome of children’s culture in Taiwan. Mandarin Daily News is one of the most important stages for the writers of children’s literature in Taiwan and has cultivated many successful writers. Furthermore, its own children’s literature award, “Reed Pipe”, is the most crucial one. It is not overstatement that its development greatly affects the development of children’s literature in Taiwan. For this reason, to take down the history of Mandarin Daily News, is a mission of great urgency—to preserve valuable record not only for this unique newspaper business, but also for history of children’s literature. This thesis is carried out based on the demand stated above. With extensively collected, elaborately codified data, it is hoped that the thesis could demonstrate the splendid achievement of Mandarin Daily News to readers. Moreover, by researching the development of Mandarin Daily News, we can get a much understanding of the reciprocal effect between children’s literature and culture after “The May Fourth Movement”.

First, the content analysis method is used to classify the images from Taiwan’s newspapers, three newspapers the "Liberty Times", "United Daily News" and "Apple Daily" are selected as the news resource. Further, two commodity security incidents "Pesticide-Tainted Dumplings Poison" and "The Tainted Milk Powder" are taken as two cases. The results of analysis show the narrative image of China’s Commodities in Taiwan are "Counterfeit", "Poisonous", "Low-priced", "Poor Quality". Usually, these images are formulated under the title "black heart". This study also shows that China’s commodities news are usually related with Taiwan’s political interaction. Under such a circumstance, some commodity events can be intensified as a cross-strait political issue. On the other hand, two commodity security incidents even worsen China’s reputation in many aspects.

Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy A Doctoral Thesis submitted to the School of Language, Literature and Media Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa; in fulfillment of the requirements for the award of PhD in Media Studies 2015
This study blends critical discourse analysis with ethnographic inquiry into the nature of discursive constructions of subaltern identities in postcolonial contexts of news production by mainstream news organisations in colonial and post-independence Zimbabwe. The main thrust of the study was to establish continuities and disjunctures in newsroom cultures of production in colonial and in post-independence situations in which marginalized former colonial subject populations are caught up. It employs a multidimensional synchronic and diachronic case study approach where one newspaper organization specifically The Herald’s coverage of episodic forced removals of subject populations is studied across different historical moments. The paper’s coverage is then critically compared and contrasted with that of other newspapers then in existence and contemporaneously operating at that time. The selected historical moments of forced removals were only heuristically chosen to the extent that they demonstrated the greatest potential for drawing media attention and thus present an opportunity for the ordinary subaltern populations to appear in the news. The content analysis generally tended to demonstrate that the same canibalesque evident in the newsification of subjects of colonial domination was pretty much evident in the way news in the post-independence period constructed the subalternity of marginalized groups. The institutionalization of the so called universal news values tend towards symbolic annihilation of subaltern ways of knowing. The newspaper as a cultural form, this study established, remains ill-suited and instrumentalised to serve the ends of emancipation and empowerment. The press in Zimbabwe retain many traces of its colonial parentage with serious negative ramifications for their claim to a democratic function

Base on the methodology of genealogy, this study uses content analysis and critical discourse analysis to explore discourse of menopause in Taiwanese mainstream newspaper from 1951 to 2014. This research finds out that the discourse of menopause changes with time. It can be distinguished into three phases. In the beginning, media used reports from foreign news agencies and personalized knowledge to construct public perception of menopause. After the Taiwanese Menopause Society was founded in 1995, media used a lot of columns which wrote by gynecologists to set menopause as a disease that requires treatment through drugs. In 2002, after the risk of hormone drug outbreak, health care gradually linked with disease risks and the concept of self-management. In the analysis of power, mass media encourage women to enter the hospital for doctors’ treatment at first, then change into demand women to take care themselves in their daily lives. Finally, the disease model of menopause is not objective knowledge. It implies the expectations of femininity and gender stereotypes in mainstream culture.

Taiwan’s traditional media has undergone several transformations since 1990. With today’s rise of social media, the traditional media industry must embrace the development of new media, and media practitioners must also integrate with the industry’s transformation. This study explores the changes in United Daily News journalists’ gatekeeping practices when they are assigned to work as news fan group editors. This study adopts a qualitative approach to study the UDN fan group as a case study, and applies the participatory observation, in-depth interview, and secondary data analysis methods to explore how the newspaper media use social platforms as a way to steer their own news and understand the work practices of the social news media editors. Because news content is affected by the nature of the platform, the journalistic profession is replaced by a traffic- and user-oriented algorithms, so that the new journalistic gate-keeping practices have introduced new standards in the news production process. This study intends to answer the following questions: What newspaper work practices have been adapted in the new role as social media editor? How do the social news media editors chose between social responsibility and platform traffic? The findings of this research show that the news contents offered by the UDN fan group were based on the data which focuses on the fans’ reading habits and issues they may be interested in. In this sense, social media editors need to build an interactive dialog with their fans, devise the news lead from fans’ point of view. However, social media editors still need to make a choice between their social responsibility and increasing news traffic when they deal with controversial issues. Nonetheless, retaining the brand value of the news organization remains the priority.

This paper deals with real time news of the Apple Daily and the China Times Group, using content analysis and depth interviews as method. The content analysis aims to illustrate the outline of real time news by category construction, coding and quantitative analysis. The sample includes a total of 1082 real-time news reports of June 3, 2015. The depth interviews aim to translate the statistical data into practice. The results show that the majority of news item from the Apple Daily is “other”, which was hard to be categorized in traditional definition of news. The main news category of the China Times Group is “economic news” . Otherwise, the Apple Daily and the China Times Group real-time news are highly comparable in news value, with "interesting" as the major news value of both of them. Overall, the results reveal that the outlines of real-time news differ by different style of news organization and media characteristics. Both the Apple Daily and the China Times Group agree that click through rate is a non-negligible index of survival in Internet world. Thus, there is no standard to release press besides news reality. In this case, the Apple Daily and the China Times Group still have different news style and apply different strategies to increase click through rate of real-time news; accordingly, they show different outline of real-time news.

Since 1999, as the economic recession beat deeper into daily life in Taiwan, there has been an agenda setting course on what I call “fashionable poverty” in the local media discourse, in which the poor and the unemployed have become a focal subject for discussion, imposing a sense of crisis upon the society. This thesis aims at creating the category of “poverty news” to characterize this trend. By way of qualitative and quantitative analyses, it is hoped that this research will provide an interpretation of the onward surge of poverty news reports during the five years between 1999 and 2003. The study finds that the figures which “poverty news” present as the poor are mostly inflictors or victims, both packed as commodity and circulated relentlessly in the media market. The editors and reporters who deal with the “poverty news” are virtually conducting an economic activity. Worst of all, the audience in this process of news production have lost the ability to think reflexively about the poverty issue, while the government has easily explained away the structural problems and hence quelled the voice of the underclass, thus making the risk of society and personal needs unqualified to be “in the agenda“. As a result, this study asserts that the liberal socialization should be adopted in the thesis of news value. Only by practicing liberal socialization could one pursue participant-advocate news professional ideology, and the social justice would be partially accomplished.

Based on the perspective of communications management, this thesis primary studied the journalistic organizational commitment and took United Daily News as a case study. The researcher aimed to find out, under the ongoing and more drastic shifting environments of media, how to enhance the employees'' loyalty toward the journalistic organizations and their own willingness of devotion to work by building a useful probe into management fixing. Therefore, from the point of conceptual view, we tried to start with gathering the real facts, analyzed the issues that come from the employees'' self-evaluation and associated with an insider''s thinking of the researcher. This study adopted quantitative method and questionnaire investigation on 163 employees of the United Daily News via a census approach. The questionnaire was designed to collect available cognitive information concerning with organizational commitment, job satisfaction, job stress, and demographic variables. The effective retrieve ratio was 80.98%, the 132 employees out of the 163 come from three different departments, where 55 legmen in edition, 41 windowmen in ad and 36 windowmen in circulation. For empirical study, we adopted SPSS for Window 7.0 as the statistic tools for answering the prime questions of this thesis. The results show that the employees in United Daily News with above normal organizational commitment (75.3%), higher job satisfaction than average level (67.36%), but job stress was below the average level (57.36%). Further more, selected Scheffe multiple comparison methods, the findings also showed that employees in both ad and circulation departments have higher diligence commitment than the editorial department; and their organizational commitment to ad department are also higher than those who work in the editorial department. On the contrary, journalists in the editorial department in terms of pay and work dimensions of job satisfaction are higher than the one in ad or circulation department. In addition, there''s no significant difference between the two groups under Scheffe''s test, including job stress. Meanwhile, demographic variables partly related to organizational commitment except gender and veteran. And, the marriage status of the employee entirely matched the prediction and significantly positively correlated with organizational commitment. Regarding the relationships among the organizational commitment, job satisfaction and job stress had stayed close to the hypotheses. The results of this study not only exhibited that the facets from job stress and job satisfaction were the most important influences but also fitted the apriori nicely. That is, organizational commitment is significantly positively correlated with job satisfaction but negatively correlated with job stress. In addition, the results of the stepwise regression indicated the first two factors in the three departments are supervisor, pay in editorial department; in ad department are work, job overload; in circulation department are work and role-overshadow. In general organizational commitment, approximately 42.8% of the variance (R square) is explained by factors mentioned above. To sum up, the present study built a regression model and provided some suggestions reflecting a dual concerns for theory and practice. Hopefully, the content of the thesis for management and development to enhance organizational commitment will be helpful for future research.

This article discussed the process that "Central Daily News", which moved to Taiwan in 1949, exceeded the "Taiwan Shin Sheng Daily News" in 1954 and became the largest newspaper in Taiwan in 1950s. During the continental period, even with KMT's assistances, the "Central Daily News" had a poor business development and ineffective propaganda. This was due to its long-term factional struggle within the party and various problems. After "Central Daily News" moved to Taiwan, due to the special political environment in Taiwan, the "Central Daily News" removed the burdens of the past in short term. In Taiwan, "Central Daily News" with respect to Taiwan's newspapers, had absolute advantages in the human, material, and financial resources. KMT’s policies of "limited registration", "limited paper", "limited sheets" and "limited permit" created a favorable environment for Public and Party newspapers so that the "Central Daily News" could become propaganda leader. In addition to the news control measures, KMT also gave special assistance on advertisements, finance, and sales channels to "Central Daily News" so that "Central Daily News" became Taiwan's largest newspaper in the 1950s. After KMT grasped this propaganda mouthpiece, it used the propagandas of "Transformation" and "Free China" to overcome difficulties and obtain foreign aid. The re-starting of "Central Daily News" in Taiwan should also be a witness of KMT 's resurgence in Taiwan.

THE CROSS-STRAIT RELATIONSHIP, SINCE THE GOVERNMENT ALLOWED CITIZENS TO VISIT MAINLAND CHINA IN 1987, HAS BEEN 1995, WHEN MAINLAND CHINA THREATENED TAIWAN BY WORDS AND MILITARY ATTACKS TAIWAN EXPERIENCED A WAR-BREAKING CRISIS AND LOST NEARLY ALL THE COMMUNICATION SOURCES. AT THAT TIME, THE TWO SIDES COULD ONLY MAKE JUDGMENTS BY THE REPORTS OF SECOND-AND TRUTH ON MEDIA. THE REFORE THE INDIRECT DIALOGUE CCURED. THIS THESIS WHICH BASED ON THOSE POINTS TRIED TO CARRY OUT THE RESEARCH INTO THE CROSS-STRAIT OFFICIAL NEWSPAPERS, IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: 1. OBSERVATIONS ON THE REPORTS ABOUT RELATED ISSUES IN BOTH NEWSPAPERS. 2. OBBSERVATIONS ON THE REPORTING POLICY. 3. ANALYSE THE ISSUES WHICH HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED THE MOST BY THE TWO NEWSPAPERS, AND FIGURE OUT THEIR VIEWPOITS. 4. PROVIDE ADEQUATE INFORMATION FOR THESE ISSUES IN ODER TO BE QUOTED BY RELATED RESEARCH. SOME RELATED RESEARCH OF THE ISSUE HAD BEEN AWAKED BY MAMY SCHOLARS. INCLUDING PROFESSOR BAO ZONG HO. AS FOR THE THESISES, THERE''S "A LOOK AT MAINLAND CHINA''S POLICY OF MILLITARY UNITED FRONT" WRITTEN BY TSAI I HONG FROM POLITICAL MILLITARY SCHOOL. IT DEFINEDAS THE PHENOMENON OF UNITED FRONT FROM MAINLAND CHINA TO TAIWAN. BECAUSE OF THE REOUIRSMENTS OF MY RESEARCH, THE THESIS ADOPTED PEOPLE''S DAILY NEWS FROM CHINAANO CENTRAL DAILY NEWS FROM TAIWAN AS TARGET MATERIALS, THE OFTEN-USED "CONTENT ANALYSIS" OF BROADCASTING RESEARCH AS APPROACH, AND "GOAL KEEPER THEORY" AND "ISSUE-DEFINED THEORY" AS THE OBSERVATION ATTEMPTS TO ANALYSE THE REPORTS RELATED TO THOSE ISSUES ON THE TWO NEWSPAPERS FROM JUNE 18tH, 1995, TO MARCH 31ST, 1996. ACCORDING TO THE RESERCH, THE REPORTS ON RELATED ISSUES DTD HAVE SOME SORT OF DIALOGUE. PEOPLE''S DAILY NEWS USED THE "THREATS AND CRITIOS" SIRATEOY THE MOST. CENTRAL DAILY NEWS, ON THE OTHER HAND, USED "ANALYSIS AND EXPLAINATION" STRATEGY. BUT BOTH WAYS DIDN''T DO ANY GOOD TO THE CROSS-STRAIT RELATIONSHIP. AS FOR THE MAIN POINT OF ISSUES, BOTH OF THE NEWSPAPERS TENDED TO EMPHASIZE THE REATION WHICH DED NO GOOD TO THE CROSS-STRAIT RELATIONSHIP, AS LONG AS IT INVOLVED THE INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS. THIS THESIS CONTAINS FIVE CHAPTERS, THE FIRST CHAPTER IS GENERAL THEORY WHICH INCLUDES MOTIVATIONS AND OBJECTIVES, RANGE AND LIMITS, AND DEFINITIONS OF WORDS. CHAPTER TWO IS DOCUMENTARY RESEARCHING, INCLUDING "GOALKEEPER THEORY", "ISSUE-DEFINED THEORY" AND THE NEWSPAPER IDEAL OF APPROACHES, WHICH CONTAINS "CONTENT ANALYSIS" CLASSIFICATION UNITANDCREDYBILTTYES. CHAPTER FOUR IS THE ANALYSIS AND EXPLANATION OF INFORMATION AND STATISTIO, CHAPTER FIVE IS THE CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS.
