Abstract This article examines the urban fiction of Jeanne Marni’s 1898 Fiacres, a collection of twenty-five stories that first appeared in the daily newspaper Le Temps. Data from the 1986 Inland Daily Newspaper Association Cost and Revenue Study were examined for the effects of scale on the costs of newspaper production factors. The study finds that total costs rise faster than circulation and that overall revenues rise faster still, although costs per page decline. This paper develops a structural model of newspaper markets to analyze the effects of ownership consolidation, taking into account not only firms' price adjustments but also the adjustments in newspaper characteristics. A new dataset on newspaper prices and characteristics is used to estimate the model. The paper then simulates the effect of a merger in the Minneapolis newspaper market and studies how welfare effects of mergers vary with market characteristics.
