The use of land consolidation on customary lands has been limited, though land fragmentation persists. Land fragmentation on customary lands has two main causes—the nature of the customary land tenure system, and the somewhat linked agricultural system. Since attempts to increase food productivity on customary lands have involved fertilisation and mechanisation on the small and scattered farmlands, these approaches have fallen short of increasing food productivity. A study to develop a responsible approach to land consolidation on customary lands using a design research approach is undertaken

The underlying basis for the work stems from the practical application of the results of the research to offshore land reclamation practices. Due to depletion of local coarse-grained soil sources and the high cost of imported granular fill, the use of dredged and excavated marine clay has become the preferred source of materials in reclamation activities. The main contribution of this paper is by consolidating this ALE formulation, to alleviate the shortcomings linked to rotation effects and the mixed relative subsonic–supersonic inlet flow conditions, which are now simply implemented through an absolute subsonic flow velocity.
