Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Khaled Anatolios
Based upon his role as a peritus at Vatican II in the shaping of the Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum, Ratzinger reflected back on the deliberations at the Council soon after its conclusion and indicated that the new development of understanding of Revelation was that Revelation is to be seen "basically as dialogue." In his Introduction to Christianity, he would indicate that because of the experience of Jesus Christ, the Church comes to see that God is not only logos, but dia-logos. Throughout his theological and pastoral career, Ratzinger, now Benedict XVI, consistently relies upon the framework of "dialogue" as the principle of coherence for how he attempts to articulate the one Christian mystery, whether he is speaking of Revelation, Christology, ecclesiology, eschatology or any other area of Christian theology. I attempt in this dissertation, to trace that principle of coherence in his thought and thereby give a hermeneutic for approaching one of the most influential theologians of our time

St, John Oliver. "Approaching classroom interaction dialogically : studies of everyday encounters in a 'bilingual' secondary school."

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis approaches classroom interaction in association with Bakhtin and conversation analysis (CA). The four studies presented in this thesis seek to highlight different aspects of classroom interactional encounters between the students and teachers of a secondary school class. Through these studies, the thesis addresses the following challenges: How can analysts account for ‘multilingual’ communicative practices in a way which respects the views and orientations of the participants? How may dialogism be relevant for classroom interaction? How can we move beyond the representational (in)sufficiency of an oral language focus on (classroom) communication for analysis of human meaning making practices? The studies arise from ethnographic fieldwork at an independent secondary school with a ‘bilingual’ educational profile where data of everyday instructional life was generated through participant observation and video recordings. Methodologically, the studies have been enabled by Bakhtinian concepts and conversation analytic conventions amplified for analysis of the complex range of modalities composing classroom interaction. Study 1 examines the way participants’ use of two (or more) languages in a ‘foreign’ language classroom throw light on each other in processes of lexical orientation which challenge the privileging or the subordination of any one language in language learning. Study 2 demonstrates the consequences for understanding the participants’ sense-making efforts of making representationally (in)visible integral aspects of their multimodal cooperations. Study 3 focuses on whole-class task instructions as interactionally complex by showing some of the mutual orientations through which teacher and students coordinate each other’s stances and consequently craft instructions collaboratively. Study 4 examines the concept of languaging critically in the light of Bakhtin’s penetrating perception of the utterance and underscores that while we may be able to language when communicating, we are also languaged communicators.

Holt, Jenny. "Caught in the fabric of world landscape and documentary : a dialogic practice." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2017. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/620069/.

Full text
Abstract:
This practice-led research investigates the artistic practice of documentary filmmaking as a means to explore tensions of place and visuality in landscapes of the South Pennines in the north of England. Created through an iterative process of practice-led and theoretical research, the thesis comprises four films: The North Wind (2013, 6’), Uplands (2014, 11’), Archipelago (2016, 19’), and Crossing (2017, 7’), and a written exegesis. The research addresses the dialectic between landscape’s visual epistemology and dynamic human-centred senses of place. Tensions between the ‘frame’ as a ‘bounded’ world of vision and place as dynamic and mobile engenders, and is developed through, an artistic documentary film practice that is processual and emergent (Hongisto 2015, MacDougall 2014), bringing pictorial and phenomenological concepts of landscape into a new relationship. The research is critically underpinned by Merleau-Ponty’s concept of ‘flesh’ (1968) as a means through which a ‘chiasm’ or ‘crossing over’ between concepts and experiences of place in the research location, and methods of artistic practice which explore and mediate themes of place, is created. An approach to film practice as ‘process’ has engendered a methodology of filmmaking as ‘weaving’ as a generative ontology of ‘making’, in which form ‘unfurls from within’ (Ingold 2005). This concept of weaving analogises the overarching filmmaking process, as well as becoming a means to navigate tensions of place in the landscape as a dynamic ‘play of forces’. Meanings of place in the South Pennines, a region of gritstone moorland straddling the Yorkshire-Lancashire border in the north of England, are central to the research. I argue that distinct tensions of landscape in the South Pennines - a pastoral ‘wilderness’ tied to northern England’s industrial histories - are pivotal to its ‘specific ambience’ (Ingold 1993) as a site of dwelling. Entangled senses of place generating themes of place and landscape in each of the films, interact with a development of practice methods, producing an approach to ‘form’ and ‘content’ that is reciprocal and interdependent. I argue that this triangulation of documentary filmmaking and landscape via theories of embodiment advances a critical understanding of filmic tensions of place and landscape. Valuable insights are also gained into processual and material approaches to documentary film, and film practice as a form of knowledge creation about experiences and senses of place and landscape.

MacGill, Fiona. "Making sense of sustained part-time working through stories of mothering and paid work." Thesis, University of Bath, 2014. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.665384.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall aim of the research was to understand the potential impact of sustained part-time working on women’s identities with regards to motherhood and work. Despite an implicit assumption in public discourse, policy and research that mothers will resume full-time careers once their children are ‘older’, half of working mothers with their youngest child at secondary school are working part-time (ONS, Q3, 2011). Often in the literature ‘good’ part-time working has been framed as short-term (see for example Tilly, 1996). The part-time ‘hidden brain drain’ (Equal Opportunities Commission, 2005) has been described as a waste of education and skills (Connolly and Gregory, 2010) and contributing to gender inequality (Walby, 2007). This PhD explored the life stories of twenty university educated, partnered mothers of older children (youngest at secondary school), who had mostly worked part-time since becoming mothers. Dialogic narrative analysis (Frank, 2010) was used to explore how these women made sense of where they had ended up through their story telling. A key finding is that for these women ‘becoming’ a part-time working mother was neither an informed ‘choice’, nor a fixed orientation, but was an ongoing process of negotiation, within a matrix of inter-related, constantly shifting and interacting tensions. Compromises to their jobs often became more extensive than expected and a continuing need to ‘be there’ for teenagers was unanticipated. Damage to ‘career’ is conceptualised as a ‘creeping trauma’. This is considered in light of the mothering stories indicating this was a price worth paying. The majority of women were engaging in a narrative of reorientation, using various strategies to reframe standards of ‘good’ working and the meaning of work within life. Success in reorientation differed according to individual experiences of constraints and opportunities.

Olsson, Ann-Margreth E. "Listening to the voice of children : systemic dialogue coaching : inviting participation and partnership in social work." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/243770.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study in and about systemic coaching in social work – systemic, and, as it unfolded, dialogical coaching, later named Dialogue Coaching (DC). Focus lies on what the conducted coaching brought forth, generated and created in the context of social work and for the members of the participating social welfare organisations. My specialities as coach became to inspire social workers to invite clients and especially children into partnership, making their voices heard, both in the written text and in the process of social investigations. The study was integral parts of commissions (and vice versa) of the County Administrative Board of Scania, Sweden, in my profession as systemic consultant and supervisor in Sweden. It was a study in how dialogical communication could improve how social workers, listening to the children’s invitation, could make children’s voices more heard in social investigations. In all, 55 social workers in seven municipalities participated in the dialogical participatory action research (DPAR) study, developing coaching and improving the dialogical interaction in social investigations. Focus moved from collecting data for decision-making, about what would be best for the child and other clients, to focusing on the changing process in relation to the participating clients, including children when they wanted to and could, co-creating new orientation on how to go on. The focus on communication and dialogue in the coaching changed and developed the participants’ approach in relation to clients and one another and others. In the emerging awareness of how we reciprocally and reflexively cocreate occurrences and outcomes, including who we become in relation to one another, the participating social workers’ awareness of the impact of their own contributions, and their own importance in relation to children and other clients, also improved. The expressions listening ears and listening questions were invented, capturing my, the coach’s, participation of placing myself completely 8 at the other participants’ disposal, completely accessible in the mutual responsiveness in the moment – being here and now in the present. The systemic methods and techniques were reflexively influenced and adapted from within the relational dynamic of joint actions in the dialogical interplay, metaphorically presented as peloton cycling in a voyage tour, becoming living tools in both the social workers’ practice and the coaching researcher’s practice, facilitating learning-by-doing with methods and approach connected to Appreciative Inquiry (AI). One of the living tools was reflecting teams emerging also into so called delta-reflecting teams with open narrating included.

Newman, Ruth Malka Charlotte. "Making talk work : exploring the teaching of collaborative talk." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14981.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the outcome of a PhD CASE Studentship funded by the ESRC and British Telecom. It presents an exploration into the teaching of collaborative talk. The study was conducted in three phases: exploratory, development and implementation. During the exploratory phase, observations and interviews were conducted in authentic workplace settings to gain an understanding of workplace collaboration and collaborative talk. During the development phase, a teaching unit for the teaching of collaborative talk at GCSE was devised, informed by understandings gleaned during the preceding phase. During the implementation phase, the teaching unit was taught by two teachers in their secondary English classrooms. Both participating classes were arranged into groups of 4: 8 groups in School 1 and 7 in School 2. For the duration of the 3 week teaching unit, groups were recorded via camera and audio recorder, and the data later synchronised. Both teachers wore an audio recorder to capture interactions with groups and the whole class. To complement the core data set, students were interviewed for their views on their learning. Student booklets provided a means of collecting both group and individual reflections and evaluative comments. The data was analysed to explore the development of students’ collaborative talk. The role of the teacher in implementing the teaching unit and supporting students’ development was also examined. The findings provide an insight into the realities of implementing successful collaborative talk in the ‘real’ secondary classroom. It contributes to conceptualisations of collaborative talk and its development. It makes links between the role of emotional engagement and dialogic interactions in supporting that development. It proposes teaching strategies which challenge perceived notions of ‘good’ talk and encourages the development of meta-language to support self-evaluation and the development of collaborative talk.

Full text
Abstract:
In this essay Murakami Haruki’s novel The Wind Up Bird Chronicle was analysed from the perspective of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the chronotope. The aim was to explore the concept of time and space as presented in the novel. In particular, the analysis focused on how Bakhtin’s chronotopes can be applied to The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, how the chronotopes can enhance our understanding of the novel, and finally how the chronotope theory can be applied to the concept of ‘magic realism’ that is often used to describe Murakami’s authorship. Four chronotopes, presented by Bachtin, were selected and applied to the novel: every-day life, the road, crisis and the castle. The concept of the chronotope allows analysis of how time and space work together in literature and how they form patterns of correlation in the sujet. Results showed that the four chronotopes were found in the novel, and that they also interacted with each other. The chronotope of everyday-life was apparent throughout the novel, and the narrator was under its control. The narrator also seemed to create every-day life out of the chronotopes of the road and crisis by re-living the crises in the road. These three chronotopes seemed inseparable in The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. Finally, the fourth chronotope, the castle, illustrated how a concrete room in the novel, a house, became a part of time and space through a character who, by his presence, gave the impression of slowing down time. When this character disappeared, time made its way through space, making the chronotope of the castle visible. The essay concludes that the chronotope theory was a relevant way to analyse The Wind Up Chronicle as it provided a concept of how time and space appeared together in a novel where time and space is always present. The analysis helped creating a way of understanding the patterns in the novel, which were not always clear, thereby also increasing the understanding of The Wind Up Bird Chronicle.

Abstract:
The following thesis presents a study on Daniel Defoes literary creation Robinson Crusoe, written in 1719. Its status as a literary classic that has been the subject of endless adaptations gives Robinson Crusoe an extraordinary position in the discursive chain, revealing the character as a myth. The present study, based on Mikhail Bakhtins concept of creative understanding, sought to amplify the meanings in the analysis of its empirical object, with the following aims: to question the possible use of classic works as fetishes, to empty its meanings and to investigate the hypothesis of Robinson Crusoe being a prototype of man as a being of language, a metalinguistic being. This hypothesis was enabled by the concept of the dialogism of language, understood within the concept of Bakhtins Circle. The methodology employed consisted of successive readings of the work, the selection of acts of language expressed by the character, and their classification into categories. From this basis, the representations of the Other in Robinsons enunciations during his period of total isolation on the island where he was shipwrecked were sought; the search was guided by the concept of the dialogic constitution of speech, since within the context of the enunciation there were no actual conversational partners present. To stress the dialogic character of language, a selection was also made of the signs of the Other in the characters autobiographical account (the work as a whole), some of which were explicitly visualized. The reflections of different authors are present in this study: Roland Barthes, Michel de Certeau, Jeanne Marie Gagnebin, Ivonne Bordelois, Zygmunt Bauman, Dominique Maingueneau, Fernando Savater, David Olson, and George Steiner. The results of this study confirm the correctness of the hypothesis proposed and demonstrate the strength of language in human life, supporting the need to value speech in the midst of the cultural crisis of liquid modernity.

Abstract:
This research posits art as an encounter, an encounter between the conceptual worlds of artists and of viewers. It acclaims the respective art skills within the marae (communal meeting place) named Tangatarua at Waiariki Institute of Technology, Rotorua. Tangatarua Marae is a place of bicultural encounter. This writing includes readers in the social relations of this encounter. This is a qualitative study that uses an interpretive epistemology to examine some of the art forms of Tangatarua. My focus is on micronarratives - that is, on intimate, improvised meanings generated by some of the small artworks. These reference and affirm the symbolism of the carvings but are less visible due to their lesser scale and interstitial placement within the interior architecture. They are rendered more visible through the phenomenological detail of participant accounts as well as the positivism of a formalist critique. I posit art as a dialogical activity, inseparable from the phenomenological conditions that precede and inform it, and inseparable from the emergent meaning that is forged at its encounter. I contend that the collaborative mode of art production within Tangatarua embodies this dialogical model. I amplify some of the tangible art forms of Tangatarua by dismantling the intangible discursive forms that have impinged on them. These include aspects of the political context of the establishment of the marae, Waiariki Institute of Technology’s bicultural framework, and the pedagogy of its Art School. My writing is underpinned by a participatory paradigm acknowledging my situatedness as an artist participant within Tangatarua, a woman of Ngai Tahu descent, and art tutor at Waiariki Institute of Technology. This study similarly acknowledges the multifaceted, experiential transactions between those artists whose small collective gestures have informed and transformed the interior of Tangatarua.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to present a practical example of how art can become an instrument capable of investigating, showing and facing a social problem. For doing so, art can overcome communication issues; secondly, it can create a “common world” of shared values that leads to changes in society. The ethnographic example shown here is set among the theatrical company of the KulturParken association (Uppsala, Sweden), which works with people with disability. The fieldwork focuses on the development and staging of their theatrical show “Sagan om Liv och Lust” which deals with the problem of sexuality and disability. The thesis structure follows two main arguments: communication process and evolution in society. The arguments are framed and analysed through the embodied knowledge concept and Turner’s theory about ritual in theatre, as well as through Kester’s dialogical and relational aesthetic theory and Rancière’s Dissensus one. This thesis highlights how disability arts and a disability aesthetic allowed the members of the company to develop a personal awareness, leading them to overcome self-imposed barriers and those imposed by society. Moreover, it shows how the receivers of the theatrical message become active actors themselves, carrying forward the communicative process.

This research aims at analyzing the discursive practices used by workers who, sometimes, use ciphered language in their professional activities while keeping characteristics of the construction of homosexual identities and of their work in a hair salon located in Rio Grande, RS. It is based on studies of work (Schwartz and Durrive, 2007; Nouroudine, 2002), on cultural studies (Hall, 2006; Bauman, 2001, 2005), and on the dialogical theory of discourse (Bakhtin, 1997, 1998, 2003; Bakhtin/Volochinov, 2006). The specific objectives of this study are the following: (i) to verify the interaction among heterosexuals and homosexuals in discursive practices at work; (ii) to analyze how discursive practices happen in male homosexuals' work; (iii) to understand discursive aspects of the identity constitution of male homosexuals in work situations. I observed and recorded interactions that occurred among three hairdressers in a hair salon, and interviewed them, afterwards. Based on the analysis which I carried out, I noticed that the ciphered language is a clue for the hairdressers' homosexual identity constitution; at times, they try not to be understood by other individuals who are around them. I also observed that the hairdressers' work activity is rather dynamic and comprises language as work, at work, and about work. Therefore, it enables different subjects, even the most intimate ones, to circulate in the work environment

This work aims to analyze how elementary school Portuguese Language (PL) teachers of Pelotas municipal network represent discursively their activity work, regarding the current moment, through linguistic theories and the PCN (National Curricular Parameters), for a integrated language teaching. As for specific objectives are concerned, they are: (a) to investigate, through discourse, how the researched PL teachers organize and develop the mother language work in the subject week schedule, identifying their teaching approaches and (b) verifying clues of the debate between antecedent norms and the renormalizations in the participant teachers activity, observing meaning effects which emerge from the teachers discourse. Therefore, two interlocution approaches were elected as theoretical basis: one is to deal with the language conception and assist in the analyzes (discourse dialogical theory: Bakhtin 1929/1997, 1952-1953/2003; Bakhtin/Volochinov,1929/2003) and another to deal with the teaching approach as work (ergological approach and teaching work studies: Schwartz, 2002, 2006, 2007; Faïta, 2005; Amigues, 2004). Moreover, some influences that the language dialogical conception implies in teaching/learning are emphasized, as well as influences on the conception of the academic research. As of the elected theory perspective, a particular methodology was developed, which contemplated speeches with 3 teachers of the municipal network, with audio recorded interviews that constituted the material for analysis. The interviews analysis were organized on each teacher individually, focusing on the interdependency between the following topics: (a) the professional activity discourse representation of the teachers and (b) the debate between the antecedent norms and the renormalizations. Bakhtin notions of propositions/ enunciations, dialogism/dialogue, interaction, word, accent of value/appreciative and discursive voice subsidized the accomplished analysis. The concepts proposed by the ergological approach which assisted in this way were antecedent norm and renormalization . The present study, from the interaction dynamics, found that, among other specific reflections of each researched teacher, the PL teaching practice discursived in the interviews seem to start from the text as the work focus with the students

The present work has analysed the discursive sliding towards the use of the word gestão (management) and the recent changes effected on managerial work. With the assumption that if looked upon as human activity this is not a simple job and exclusively heterodetermined by the management model according to the interests of capital, the idea was to emphasise the debates of norms and the possible reserves of alternatives on the activities of management professionals, as well as the possibilities for their development torwards an ergologic management. Aiming at contributing to the discussion of whether there could on the core of material production itself coexist ways of construction of an effectively human sociability it is analysed to which extent management professionals perform daily a management (not only of others but also of themselves) in which values other than the exclusively mercantile and economic ones are summoned. Looking into the research object informed by a Social Psychology of Work who favours the activity standpoint, it was intended to take a successive approximation to the work supervision activities, which tend to be amplified towards including production management, to get closer to production support services and encouragement of operators participation. The field research was carried out on an industrial unit of a private multinational company which manufactures and trades pneumatic products. The methodological design privileged a clinical framing through an indirect investigation method based on the (self)confrontation principle and on a dialogic analyses approach with the use of the Work Meetings‟ device and the Instruction for de Double‟ technique. The results suggest that supervision work involves integration of multiple determinations, demands and values. The existence of social dimensions on managerial work performed by supervisors is emphasised. On the self-assessment process of their work activities, there is evidence that by applying themselves intellectually, cognitively, affectively and bodily on the standard discussions in their activities they seek through normalization to reinforce their own life standards where values of group life and health are also present. Focusing on the conditions to put the work in debate in the light of the activity itself, the present work discusses the relationship between the production potential of new standards of supervision activities and the assumption of an ergologic managerial way, emphasising the standpoint that participative management‟ proposals do not present themselves in their own right as an opening to a management way which gives visibility to the day to day management of work which is always, at some level, formulated and operated collectively

Abstract:
The Swedish school has the task of allowing all pupils to develop their ability to verbally communicate in the classroom. Through communicating verbally, the pupils will gain confidence in their linguistic ability in the social-science subjects. The purpose of this study is to investigate how a random selection with “ice cream sticks” can help to create a dialogic classroom, and how the participants perceive this type of teaching method, and if there is possible change in communicating verbally. The questions the study will answer are:  ·       How do the teacher's questions and responses to the student responses affect student participation? ·       To what extent does mutual respect arise from classroom dialogue? ·       How do pupils and class teachers experience the random selection at the beginning and end of a period of three weeks? ·       To what extent and in what way has the changed way of teaching contributed to a dialogical classroom in the social-science subjects?   This survey includes pupils and teachers from two classes in grade four and five. The qualitative methods used in this survey are observations and interviews. The material has been analyzed using theories about how dialogue is created in the classroom and how the teaching form with “ice cream sticks” can be organized. The result that emerged from this research is that with the help of the teaching style and the teachers' approaches, which is how they ask questions and how they respond to the students, the quantitative student participation has contributed to an increased classroom dialogue.

Considering the relevance of supervised preservice training for teachers training and the complexity of this activity, this research has as its general aim to investigate characteristics of the work of Portuguese language preservice teaching trainees in order to contribute for the understanding of conflicts arising in this training stage. To do this, we propose the following specific aims: (a) to investigate to whom is directed the activity of Portuguese language teaching trainees during supervised preservice training; (b) to verify from linguistic practices of teaching trainees how discussions about norms applying to their activity arise; (c) to analyze how the use of self by oneself and by others happens during preservice training and (d) to identify discursive clues that refer to the real of the activity of Portuguese language teaching preservice training. Our theoretical background are studies of Bakhtin s Circle that have as their crucial assumption the conception of language as a constitutively dialogical phenomenon, studies that are integrated for the aims of our work with studies carried through by Work Sciences, which consider work a complex object and recognize the importance of analyzing language for adequately understanding it. In accordance with the adopted theoretical perspective and taking into account the importance of having work protagonists talk about the activity they carry through, we created two different speech spaces for research subjects three teaching trainees from the Course of Letters of a private university of a city of Rio Grande do Sul to talk about their preservice training period: (a) individual interviews and (b) the participation in a discussion group. As a parameter for focusing the analysis, considering recurrence and aims to reach, we selected, by examining utterances produced by trainees, three topics in circulation: (a) to whom teaching activity is directed during supervised preservice training, (b) conceptions of Portuguese language teaching and (c) difficulties lived during preservice training. From each topic and considering the reflection's theoretical basis, we analyzed from an enunciative-discursive point of view, trainees utterances produced considering interdependently the specific conditions of research, the situation where verbal interactions materialize and linguistic materiality aspects. Results point to the fact that speech spaces created in the research provided different interactions that produced in alterity relationships several different subjectivity productions and the recognition of part of the complexity of the teaching activity in preservice training. Moreover, considering the dynamic character of human subjects, language, the sense and work activity itself, dimensions traversed by a multiplicity of voices, we point out some characteristics of Portuguese language preservice teaching trainees activity: (a) their work is constituted from the conflicting character of the other to whom they direct their activity and from the restricted space for the use of self, mainly by oneself; (b) their practice is traversed by a permanent tension among antecedent norms (proceeding from different spaces) and the inevitable renormalizations and (c) there is a movement of constant tension between the activity carried through and the real of the activity , and therefore trainees are evaluated at all moments and need to adjust their work to requirements that are not only different but many times divergent from their own points of view

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on understanding the processes of designing work systems of farmers engaged in an agroecologicaltransition. It is based on the implementation of a method: the Chronicle of Change. By offering farmers to build design narratives, it reveals the overall design process in which they are involved. This process is analyzed on the basis of a dialogical model of design (e.g. Béguin, 2010) that puts the poles of virtual and real into tension, to which we add a pole of designable to show the movements between past – present – future, which are at work in the process. These narratives make visible the object being designed: the working system composed of subsystems. The farmer's experience with these subsystems contributes to the progress of the design process and the farmer's construction of a systemic approach to his purpose. In perspective, this thesis opens on the role of narrative in the development of the experience of a design process and on the notion of designing sustainable work systems

The present study aims to examine facets of the activity Review Linguistics developed within the Department of Distance Education (DLS) of the Federal University of Rio Grande-FURG in terms of their characteristics and labor enunciation. This study aims to verify seo review work performed in DLS / FURG can be considered an act of collaborative construction of discourse, in the specific case of textbooks. The research corpus is composed of interactions about texts under review, ¬ established via e-mail between the Core Revision Linguistics DLS / FURG and lecturers who worked during the year 2010 , and a questionnaire to two reviewers Nucleus mentioned about their perceptions of actions and interrelations that constitute its activity. The theoretical framework that underpins this work is anchored in understanding Bakhtin language / language on postulates about the work, arising from Ergology and Clinical Activity (CLOT; FAÏTA, 2000) as well as in studies of Oliveira (2010) and Soares (2009), concerning the activities reviewed and textual production, and Sobral (2008) about the work of translation as a job with speeches. This research is embedded in a field of qualitative research, in terms of Bogdan e Biklen (1994), which is reflected in the criteria for selection and generation of data analyzed, since the focus of the research focuses on the process of material production in DE in FURG, not only in its product, ie, the courseware completed. Moreover, for such a process to be glimpsed, we started with theoretical principles study of discursive practices and activity to then arrive at a definition of the categories proposed to designate speech acts performed in matching the sector review and teacher authors material, namely: thanks, disagreement with the proposal made, host of suggestions and concern to make the material clearer. The analyzes allowed achieving the main objective of the research, since it could demonstrate that the review activity investigated is a social practice and discourse, which can be considered an act of collaborative construction of speeches designed to promote the formation of the end user, the student of the DL FURG. In short, it was noted that the work done by the Core Review DLS occurs within an extensive network of inter-relationships, direct and indirect, between different stakeholders (teachers, students, reviewers, etc..), And this joint work and cooperative, even when there are conflicts and disagreements. This is the minimum requirement for satisfactory end result, ie, for the provision of textbooks that are developed collaboratively, through a constant process of 11 interaction and dialogue between teachers and reviewers in order to provide students DL / FURG texts teaching more clearly, cohesive and coherent as possible, even if that result is always subject to improvements

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis originated in an activity clinic intervention in work psychology conducted at the Renault company in France. The intervention covered two activities: assembly line activities and industrial design. The thesis concerns the second activity conducted at the Renault Technocentre. The dialogical process deployed made it possible to reduce isolation at work by developing the psychological function of the group. The assumption put forward is that it is possible to demonstrate this development. The analyses characterise the situations of isolation producing utterances devoid of the existence of others as well as dialogues inhabited by others, a sign of the development of the psychological function of the group. The analyses raise questions concerning the establishment of a lasting dialogical process in the Renault engineering department. Theconclusion highlights the vital role of professional dialogue for efficiency and health at work

Abstract:
Modern man has a distrust of speech. It is difficult to find in it, a tool for dialogue to engage oneself to meet the Other. In our work, we address this issue in terms of a double - triad that articulates on the one hand : God - World - Man and and on the other hand, Creation - Revelation - Redemption. This double articulation is exposed in the New Thought of Franz Rosenzweig, in the Principle Dialogic by Martin Buber and the face - to - face of Emmanuel Levinas. Each one, in his own way, gives the implications of speech and dialogue in the construction of "otherness". In it, the separation of roles, even primarily, is a prerequisite. It is by assuming that we can take over an ethical commitment that is free of any calculation or trade reciprocity

Abstract:
The present doctoral thesis deals with the professional education of construction workers with the objective of contributing to pedagogical experiences that are alternative to their current heteronomous and oppressed work conditions, through experimental tests in the form of \'construction site - self - managed school\'. These practices raised questions and revealed gaps in knowledge of the history of alternative and unitary modes of education. We have explored examples of schools and spaces for the expansion of the autonomy of the constructors as a contribution to their social and political emancipation. We wonder how we came to the current separation of professions, divided between theoretical - architects - and practices - workers. In search of their genealogy, we approach the first class based societies in antiquity and the first dual formative spaces, separating education of the elites for the direction of society - liberal and theoretical education, and the subaltern classes - practical education for work. The education of architects and builders takes place particularly in class based societies: there are societies where the formation is dual where architects learn their craft away from constructive practices, without using their work force, to create \"architects without construction\", and The builders apprehend their work in the workshops, without controlling the production of architecture, in a dialectical relationship dominated by architects. In other societies, the formation of architects is due to the physical-corporal practical experience in the material production of architecture, when they develop the office of drawing, and in representation, it is at the construction site that they form \"architects with construction\", of popular origin. They are autonomous professionals who idealize and build. In the invasion of the Americas by Europeans the elites trained enslaved people to build with European aesthetics. They erected buildings with heteronomous work, oppressed and exploited. With the advance of productive forces in the nineteenth century, they created assistencial Liceus, to \"qualify\" builders with the support of Italian workers. In this period - 1870 to 1914, São Paulo - we verified that they did not realize that the broad and autonomous artistic qualification of the builders would result in mobilizations for labor rights. When they realized it, they refused the Italian anarchists and the capomastri collectivists builders of the São Paulo eclecticism, sponsoring technology that excludes the worker from creation: the reinforced concrete. There is a period of disqualification and training of the worker. \"National System\" is created, and in 1964 the civilian military coup has place, and lasts until 1988. With redemocratization, self-managed formative experiences and socializing public policies are extended to 2016 - year of media-partisan coup of the elites. These 28 years have generated experiences of \"education of workers by workers\", as rehearsed in the \"construction site school\" with popular movement, the MST, and university, USP. We built the \'house of arts\' at the ENFF - Guararema, with agro-ecological construction techniques and a \'public gallery\' at the Chemical Park - São Bernardo do Campo, with compensatory urban drainage techniques. The essays practiced the idiosyncrasies of the libertarian education of construction workers perceived in the survey of the historical process. This experience allowed us to identify the contemporaries \'construction site schools\' fall within the traditional lines of people`s action for the emancipation of the class.

Judon, Nathalie. Thesis, Bordeaux, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017BORD0705/document.

Abstract:
In the context of current uncertainty surrounding the problem of exposure to bitumen in road surfacing (coating), the aim of the thesis is to set up general principles and methods of action for new preventive solutions that will enrich the existing measures. In this perspective, we have developed an approach centred on the association of workers at all hierarchical levels (operators, proximity managers, prevention workers and decision-makers) around "intermediary objects of prevention" in order to support a collective debate. This collective debate is seen as a reflective practice on work activity, which is itself seen as the condition of a common language, allowing for initial choices to be changed and a resource for mutual learning between actors. To this end, we have developed, reworked and enriched the notion of risk representation, which promotes the visibility and recognition of the knowledge built, developed and carried by workers on their activities and on ways to protect themselves from dangers or hazards. These representations of risk and the know-hows are a decisive element of prevention because they are applied in both normal and degraded modes of the activity and are derived from experience and social construction. We have developed a fine and precise knowledge of the activity of asphalt processing operators in two public works agencies, which highlighted that the players in the field have a detailed knowledge of chemical risks. These representations, which were essentially made possible by the experience of the body and the senses, cannot always been called up with a view to setting up protective measures in the work activity. They would be prevented or even "encysted" when it seems impossible for workers to do otherwise with the need to manage the hazards, variability and other dangers present and when their power to act seems to them to be non existent. And yet, we show that they become accessible from references to the intimate and domestic sphere in reflexive activities that mobilize both data from observations, measurements and verbalizations. From a preventive research perspective, the aim of the thesis is to establish a dialogue between different institutional and corporate worlds so as to enable the actors to get involved and mobilize their individual, collective and organizational resources to propose prevention solutions. This "intermediate space for dialogue" is made possible by the coconstruction of intermediate objects capable of 1- producing and supporting a debate about the current practices of the operators and their representations with regard to the existing safety devices and 2- supporting dialogues and mutual learning. These intermediate prevention objects are ultimately circulating entities for the co-production of knowledge for action: to generate knowledge and to collectively generate innovative prevention solutions

Holm, Marie-Louise. "Fleshing out the self : Reimagining intersexed and trans embodied lives through (auto)biographical accounts of the past." Doctoral thesis, Linköpings universitet, Tema Genus, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-137432.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how current ways of imagining possibilities for intersexed and trans embodied lives within medical contexts might be informed by and reimagined through the historical lived experiences of intersexed and trans individuals as they have been articulated in autobiographical accounts. Postmodern, queer, intersex, and trans researchers and activists have criticised existing standards of intersex and trans healthcare for limiting the possibilities for diverse embodied lives by articulating certain forms of embodiment and selfhood as more likely to enable a liveable life than others. This has often been done in a medico-legal context by referring to experiences in the past of the unliveability of corporealities and gendersexed situations that differ from privileged positions. With a point of departure in these critiques, this thesis reopens questions about how intersexed and trans people may be embodied and have relations with others by reflecting upon the period of the first three-quarters of the 20th century, when the present standards of care and diagnostic categories were emerging, but had not yet become established. Drawing upon a unique set of historical source material from the archives of the Danish Ministry of Justice and the Medico-Legal Council, intersexed and trans persons’ life stories are rearticulated from their own and medico-legal experts’ accounts written in relation to applications for change of legal gendersex status and medical transition. In this way, the process is traced through which these life stories have been repeatedly rearticulated in order to become a usable basis for diagnosis and decision-making. At the same time, the stories are unfolded once more in a rearticulation focusing on their complexity and diversity.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with a philosophical conception of an Austrian thinker of the 20th century Ferdinand Ebner in his life?s work ?Das Wort und die geistigen Realitäten: Pneumatologische Fragmente? (1921). Not only his life and the persons who influenced Ebner?s work were taken into account, but also the cultural-historical context of the period in which his original thoughts evolved. The heart of this paper lies in the introduction and explanation of the basic terms and theses that are crucial for Ebner?s philosophy, or more precisely his pneumatology. This part also contains Czech translation of some of the most important passages of Ebner?s work.

Ignagni, Esther. "Disabled Young People, Support and the Dialogical Work of Accomplishing Citizenship." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/31790.

Full text
Abstract:
Governments, human rights bodies and disability studies scholars all have suggested that disabled people’s citizenship – the legal status and lived practices that enable membership, participation and belonging in one’s community - depends on consistent, adequate and readily available home and personal supports. Yet, little theoretical or empirical work examines disabled young people’s citizenship or their use of support, particularly from their standpoints. Consequently, the ‘work’ disabled young people do to accomplish citizenship remains unrecognized, as are their unique requirements for support to do that work. Normative non-disabled citizenship assumptions remain unproblematized. This study explores what disabled young people do to accomplish citizenship, using home and personal support as the empirical foci. I used a dialogic theoretical and methodological approach, drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin and Dorothy Smith. Both posit that our talk, consciousness and actions respond to and anticipate the voices of others. Through participatory media arts techniques with disabled young people, ethnographic observation and interviews with gatekeepers to formal and informal care, I describe the work that a group of disabled young people did to secure and maintain support and how this in turn shaped their opportunities for specific citizenship practices: self-determination, community participation and social contribution. I argue that disabled young people's work to secure and maintain support requires that they mobilize the authoritative discourse of 'the poster child': a set of objectified values and views encapsulated in utterances about disabled people as futureless, deficient and deferential, originating in images to promote charitable giving. I trace three sequences of activities in which participants assimilated, resisted or brought poster child utterances into ‘dialogue’. The findings raise questions about the extent to which formal entitlements to supports influence how citizenship is lived. Drawing attention to the gaps and tensions in support provision, the findings illuminate the tremendous invisible, tacit work these participants do to strengthen fragile supports. This work, organized by philanthropic rather than rights discourses, leads to a qualified or fragile citizenship. Finally, the study raises questions about the normative and material demands that we may all experience with respect to achieving citizenship, regardless of disability or age.

Over the past two decades and more, the literature on dance works seldom directly talks about the tacit involvement of dancers in the process of rehearsal experience. Therefore, it is worth exploring how to use the narration of words to talk about the unspeakable body experience of dancers in the process of creation and performance. Using Michael Polanyi's theory of focus consciousness and support consciousness and the definition of body sense by researchers, this paper collects the text of dancers' body practice experience by in-depth interviews, and explores the transformation of dancers' two kinds of consciousness and their status in the rehearsal process of Hsiao Chiin-Ling's dance works "Smoke", "Free" published in 2016 and "Drunk" published in 2018. The phenomena and characteristics of tacit penetration of the conflict and transformation of body sensation are combined with practice and theory to extract the characteristics of tacit penetration of national dancers. The creation process of national dance is a bodily cultural imagination and contemporary socialized aestheticism. Through repeated practice, dancers internalize the external movement techniques into the body. Through the continuous transformation of focus consciousness, dancers can break through the obstacles of bodily techniques to reach the realm of "expert stunt", and through the metaphorical guidance of Hsiao Chiin-Ling, it enlightens the knowledge transformation of the dancer's imagination, and then changes the dancer's dance quality, and further sublimes the dancer's body sense to "superego perception". With the echo of Polanyi's "personal knowledge" theory, this paper makes the dancer's body practice experience clearer through theoretical philosophy, and provides a new perspective to think about the body sense in dance.

Full text
Abstract:
We conducted the study to explore and define the role of the social worker in Primary Health Care. The medical care model on its own is viewed as inappropriate for developing countries. We see Primary Health Care as holding the key to improving the health status of the many disadvantaged communities in South Africa. The Primary Health Care approach demands those health care providers, including social workers work collaboratively to provide the best possible services to the communities. Social Work is a profession concerned with the disadvantaged. However, social workers are assigned a very limited role in Primary Health Care. Since participants are concerned about subjective and experiential realities, participatory research was the appropriate research method. The major findings and conclusions were that, social workers have a role in Primary Health Care. They have to be assertive and tell others what is it that they do to find a place in Primary Health Care
