Abstract:
Do international standards regarding human rights require the existence of a liberal regime? This was the thrust of Rhoda Howard and Jack Donnelly's essay in the September 1986 issue of this Review. Neil Mitchell takes vigorous issue with this contention, arguing first and foremost that Howard and Donnelly have not defined liberalism satisfactorily. Howard and Donnelly present a spirited rejoinder.

Abstract:
A new genus, Drepanoneura (type species Drepanoneura loutoni sp. nov.), is described to include Epipleoneura letitia Donnelly, Protoneura peruviensis Fraser, and six new congeneric species from South America: D. donnellyi, D. flinti, D. janirae, D. loutoni, D. muzoni, and D. tennesseni. Drepanoneura is similar to Epipleoneura and Epipotoneura in venational characters, but differs from them in morphology of male cercus, genital ligula, female pronotum, and epiproct. A new species of Epipleoneura from Venezuela, E. demarmelsi, and a new species of Epipotoneura from Brazil, E. machadoi, are described, and diagnostic illustrations for the poorly known Epipotoneura nehalennia Williamson are also presented. A generic characterization, diagnoses, and keys for species of Drepanoneura are provided, as well as diagnostic illustrations and distribution maps for all involved species.

Abstract:
Abstract The travel cost model of recreation demand analysis was applied to seven USDA Forest Service Ranger Districts in Utah. The objectives were to (1) estimate consumers' surplus and total willingness to pay values for the recreational component of personal use Christmas tree gathering, and (2) compare these Utah results with each other and with the Markstrom and Donnelly (1988) results from Colorado, the only other travel cost analysis of Christmas tree gathering from public lands. The results were that per-trip consumer' s surplus estimates ranged from $6.71 to $31.17, compared to Markstrom and Donnelly's (1988) estimate of $10.05. There is sufficient intersite variation that the demand functions from any site cannot be readily applied to any other. West. J. Appl. For. 6(2):42-46.

Abstract:
The diffusion-generator approximation technique developed by De Iorio and Griffiths (2004a) is a very useful method of constructing importance-sampling proposal distributions. Being based on general mathematical principles, the method can be applied to various models in population genetics. In this paper we extend the technique to the neutral coalescent model with recombination, thus obtaining novel sampling distributions for the two-locus model. We consider the case with subdivided population structure, as well as the classic case with only a single population. In the latter case we also consider the importance-sampling proposal distributions suggested by Fearnhead and Donnelly (2001), and show that their two-locus distributions generally differ from ours. In the case of the infinitely-many-alleles model, our approximate sampling distributions are shown to be generally closer to the true distributions than are Fearnhead and Donnelly's.

Beni, Yaghoub Tadi. "On the size-dependent vibration of the embedded double-walled carbon nanotube conveying fluid using shell model." New Trends and Issues Proceedings on Advances in Pure and Applied Sciences, no. 9 (January 10, 2018): 66–77. http://dx.doi.org/10.18844/gjapas.v0i9.3021.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, the vibration and instability of double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) conveying fluid were investigated by using the modified strain gradient theory. The Donnell's shell theory was used by taking into consideration the three size effects and simply-supported boundary conditions. The effect of van der Waals force between the two intended walls and the surroundings of the DWCNT was modelled as visco-Pasternak foundation. The governing equations of the problem and boundary conditions were derived from Hamilton’s principle. Also, Navier procedure was used to solve the vibration problem. To verify the results, a comparison was drawn between the results of this study and those of the references. According to the findings, the effects of fluid velocity, stiffness and damping of visco-Pasternak foundation, length of DWCNT and size effect are more considerable in the modified strain gradient theory than in the modified couple stress theory and classical theory. Keywords: Modified strain gradient theory, Donnell’s shell theory, DWCNT, size effect, shell vibration.

Wilsher, Mark. "The phantom ‘practice-only thesis’." Journal of Writing in Creative Practice 13, no. 2 (February 1, 2020): 219–27. http://dx.doi.org/10.1386/jwcp_00005_1.

Full text
Abstract:
As universities become accustomed to the complexities of their art and design faculties, a body of literature has emerged that explores some of the possibilities of a doctorate in the creative arts. In the area of fine art in particular, although not exclusively, there has been a drive towards a purely practice-based thesis. This article argues that the notion of the practice-only thesis is not only an unrealistic illusion that puts pressure on students, but also does not reflect contemporary professional practices. For an art practice to communicate any sort of specific knowledge it must be embedded in a pre-existing and continuously evolving flux of discourse produced through written and spoken language. The American artist Trisha Donnelly’s 2014 Serpentine Gallery exhibition is taken as an example. Critical writing in the art press produces an accepted interpretation, and this is what the artist ‘Trisha Donnelly’ comes to stand for. So artwork that might appear to be producing its meaning autonomously should be seen as a collaborative practice involving the artist together with their professional interpreters. Research students are required to produce a self-contained project which would seem to preclude the incorporation of writing or academic interpretation by others. But it is fundamentally unfair to demand a thesis without any written component since it does not exist in an expanded notion of the contemporary art world.

Abstract:
The free vibrations of conical shells, having two open rigidly clamped edges, are investigated by using a variational development of the equations of motion based upon the Classical Shell Theory, and results are compared with those obtained by using Donnell’s approximation in the development of these equations. Through suitable examples, the validity of Donnell’s approximation to compute natural frequencies and mode-shapes of conical shells is shown.

Abstract:
In a rebuttal of Ames's critique of his conception of universal human rights, Donnelly asserts that Ames has misrepresented his arguments, creating a straw man from Ames's own preconceived notion of the Western liberal tradition while ignoring the substantive debates. In response to Ames's cultural approach to human rights, Donnelly argues that culture cannot be viewed as static. Structural, political, and economic factors have significant effects upon culture and the rights of each citizen. Donnelly concludes that the more significant cause of China's failure to recognize the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is not Confucian culture but rather China's own corrupt and dictatorial regime; thus the international community must continue to condemn China's violations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Abstract:
This article provides details of small US companies that are competing with Chinese counterparts and earning profits as well. Elnik Systems keeps costs under control by importing expensive molybdenum and tungsten furnace metals from China. It also outsources predrilled molybdenum furnace tray preforms, but must bend them into shape in the United States to achieve the quality it requires. Irwin Industrial Tool Co. sets aggressive cost goals each year, relying on employee teams and ongoing investment to drive down unit costs. It has reduced headcount, sought better deals from suppliers, and even outsourced its warehouse. Reducing costs cuts the premium Irwin needs to charge to profit from making Vise-Grips in DeWitt. As long as ‘Made in America’ means a better product, it can continue to do that. In many ways, the engineering plastic injection molding business of Donnelly Custom Manufacturing Co. in Alexandria, Minn. resembles the short-run, fast-turnaround model of New York's Liberty Brass Turning. Despite his success, Donnelly worries about America's manufacturing future. Donnelly exited the business before it all went to China. Now he questions whether other start-ups would go to a local source or deal directly with China.
