Kihlgren, Mona. "Integrity promoting care of demented patients." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för omvårdnad, 1992. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-100570.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis was to investigate if integrity promoting care improves functions in demented patients over time. The Erikson (1982) theory of ”eight stages of man” was used as a basis for training of staff in a three-month intervention study (I-VI) at a nursing home ward. A collective living unit where staff had had support in the performance of the delivery of care was also evaluated and compared with a nursing home in a long-term study (VII). Patients, relatives, staff, and the environments were investigated. Cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of somatostatin increased, and reduction of distractability, anxiety and confusion was seen in the intervention group (I) in contrast to controls. In the collective living group (VII) EEG activities indicated a reduction of supposed dementia induced changes. Better motor and social ability, some improved intellectual ability, more alertness and reduced signs of depression were seen (I, II, VII). Patients expressed more autonomy (IV, VII) and initiatives (II-VII) and showed a lot of competence (V) in conversations. Five patients (V) showed patterns of behaviour which seemed to reflect life-long characteristics in spite of their severe dementia. The improvement in the patients' functions can be attributed to the physical environment and the integrity promoting care, since the medical treatment of the patients remained unchanged. In the thesis medical, psychological, and nursing sciences were connected in a complementary process. The results were congruent, and indicate that patients in the care of staff who had had training and support, declined less than controls.

The aim of his paper is to analyze Martin Luther s life, from the psychoanalytic view-point, by studying Erik Erikson s book Young Man Luther , A Study in Psychoanalysis and History. It is a very challenging bibliographic research, due to the amount of material produced up to now on Luther s life. A psycho-biography that aspires developing a profound and comprehensive study of a person whose magnitude of references is so vast is not an easy task. The first chapter s goal is to set up historical-scientific approach of the two protagonists. An exposition of Martin Luther s personal life is detailed firstly, beginning with his parents, reaching his individuality and his relationships with his wife and children. After that, a section will also be dedicated to Erik Erikson s life and thoughts, since he is taken as the point of theoretical reference to this piece of work. The second chapter consists in A Critical Dialogue With Erikson s Theory About Luther, elaborating a critical analysis of Erikson s book, Young Man Luther. This appreciation will be made on basis of the author of this paper s own thoughts, of ideas expressed by Luther himself, and of what other biographers have exhaustively spoken and written about his life. Finally, a critical appreciation and particular conclusions about the main characters will be expressed.

Abstract:
We define Γ(E), a subset of C³, related to the structured singular value μ of 2x2 matrices. μ is used to analyse performance and robustness of linear feedback systems in control engineering. We find a characterisation for the elements of Γ(E) and establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an analytic function from the unit disc into Γ(E) satisfying an arbitrary finite number of interpolation conditions. We prove a Schwarz Lemma for Γ(E) when one of the points in Γ(E) is (0,0,0), then we show that in this case, the Carathéodory and Kobayashi distances between the two points in Γ(E) coincide. We also give a characterisation of the interior, the topological boundary and the distinguished boundary of Γ(E), then we define Γ(E)-inner functions and show that if there exists an analytic function from the unit disc into Γ(E) that satisfies the interpolating conditions, then there is a rational Γ(E)-inner function that interpolates.

Abstract:
While Erikson's psychosocial theory continues to dominate theoretical explanations of adolescent identity development. Marcia's ego identity status paradigm has become the primary basis to empirically measure such notions. Though Marcia's paradigm has its roots in psychosocial theory. questions have surfaced regarding the communality of Marcia's and Erikson's notions on identity. Issues of scope. connectedness. definition. terminology. and measurement have marked a potential divergence among the two approaches-views which until recently seemed almost unified. This study addressed the relationship between Erikson's psychosocial theory and Marcia's ego identity status paradigm. By administering identity and psychosocial stage-specific measures to a sample of college-age adolescents. an assessment of the empirical relationship between the two theories has been established. A general pattern was found that the highest levels of psychosocial trust. autonomy. initiative. and industry were reported by the achieved respondents, followed by the foreclosed, moratorium, and diffused respondents, respectively. Discriminant analysis also identified specific psychosocial differences between statuses. The achieved respondents reported higher levels of trust. autonomy, initiative. and industry than moratoriums: significantly higher levels of autonomy and industry than the foreclosed: and significantly higher levels of trust and initiative. and significantly lower levels of guilt when compared to diffused respondents. Moratoriums reported significantly higher levels of emotional autonomy and significantly lower levels of trust and initiative than foreclosed respondents. Moratoriums did report significantly higher initiative and lower guilt than the diffused. Foreclosed respondents reported significantly higher initiative and lower autonomy than diffused persons. These results provide significant-albeit initial----quantitative evidence that Marcia's ego identity status paradigm corresponds both specifically and broadly to Erikson's theory of identity development.

Abstract:
The problem of finding a reduced order model, optimal in the H² sense, to a given system model is a fundamental one in control system analysis and design. The addition of a H constraint to the H² optimal model reduction problem results in a more practical yet computationally more difficult problem. Without the global convergence of homotopy methods, both the H² optimal and the combined H²/H model reduction problems are very difficult. For both problems homotopy algorithms based on several formulations input normal form; Ly, Bryson, and Cannon's 2 X 2 block parametrization; a new nonminimal parametrization are developed and compared here. For the H² optimal model order reduction problem, these numerical algorithms are also compared with that based on Hyland and Bernstein's optimal projection equations. Both the input normal form and Ly form are very efficient compared to the over parametrization formulation and the optimal projection equations approach, since they utilize the minimal number of possible degrees of freedom. However, they can fail to exist or be very ill conditioned. The conditions under which the input normal form and the Ly form become ill conditioned are examined. The over-parametrization formulation solves the ill conditioning issue, and usually is more efficient than the approach based on solving the optimal projection equations for the H² optimal model reduction problem. However, the over-parametrization formulation introduces a very high order singularity at the solution, and it is doubtful whether this singularity can be overcome by using interpolation or other existing methods.

Kavallieratou, Anastasia. "Utilizing balance theory, parasocial interaction theory and genre theory in evaluating product placement effects on consumer attitudes." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2013. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/57130/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the effects of product placements on consumer attitudes toward the placed products, in the genre of television sitcoms. The study utilizes the integration of balance theory, parasocial interaction theory and genre theory to evaluate the “Balance Model of Sitcom Product Placement Effects” and test its applicability under the conditions set for the execution of the present research. Through the utilization of the three theories, the character-product associations existent in the conventions of contemporary sitcoms and the consumer-character relationships likely to be developed with the viewing of serialized television programs, are examined with regard to the way that their interaction influences consumer attitudes toward placed products. As the model has its foundations on balance theory, it is suggested that the theoretical premise of attitudinal alignment can explain the interactions existing in the model’s relational system which consists of three elements; the consumer, the character and the placed product. The consumer attitude alignment process toward the character is tested as being guided by the consumer-character relation variables of consumer attitude toward character and parasocial attachment with character, and the character-product relation variables of character’s attitude valence toward, and strength of association with, the placed product. The methodological premises set for this research involve the utilization of a contemporary sitcom as stimulus, a sample consisting of a particular target group of 128 participants who hold specific characteristics and are regular viewers of the sitcom, and an online survey research instrument for the measurement of the variables. The findings support the predictions regarding consumers’ attitudinal alignment toward products according to characters’ attitudes toward products, with consumer parasocial attachment with character constituting the most influential factor in the process. This research supports the generalizability faculty of the balance model of placement effects, by corroborating previous findings. Moreover, this study facilitates the accretion of product placement knowledge by following the methodological underpinnings of the replication approach, and fulfils its major purpose of providing corroborated, generalized and extended propositions regarding placements’ effects in the television media context, thus offering valuable practical implications for the practice’s employment by marketers.

Without the global convergence of homotopy methods, both the H² optimal and the combined H²/H model reduction problems are very difficult. However, the over-parametrization formulation introduces a very high order singularity at the solution, and it is doubtful whether this singularity can be overcome by using interpolation or other existing methods. Although there are numerous algorithms for solving Riccati equations, there still remains a need for algorithms which can operate efficiently on large problems and on parallel machines and which can be generalized easily to solve variants of Riccati equations. This thesis gives a new homotopy-based algorithm for solving Riccati equations on a shared memory parallel computer. The central part of the algorithm is the computation of the kernel of the Jacobian matrix, which is essential for the corrector iterations along the homotopy zero curve. Using a Schur decomposition the tensor product structure of various matrices can be efficiently exploited. The algorithm allows for efficient parallelization on shared memory machines. The linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) theory has engendered a systematic approach to synthesize high performance controllers for nominal models of complex, multi-input multioutput systems and hence it is a breakthrough in modern control theory. Homotopy algorithms for both full and reduced-order LQG controller design problems with an H constraint on disturbance attenuation are developed. The H constraint is enforced by replacing the covariance Lyapunov equation by a Riccati equation whose solution gives an upper bound on H² performance. The numerical algorithm, based on homotopy theory, solves the necessary conditions for a minimum of the upper bound on H² performance. The algorithms are based on two minimal parameter formulations: Ly, Bryson, and Cannon's 2 X 2 block parametrization and the input normal Riccati form parametrization. An over-parametrization formulation is also proposed. Numerical experiments suggest that the combination of a globally convergent homotopy method with a minimal parameter formulation applied to the upper bound minimization gives excellent results for mixed-norm synthesis.

Complex dynamical systems can be characterized through the time series associated with dynamical variables, which yield important information on the underlying stochastic process. The probability density function, the temporal correlation function, the power spectrum, and the memory function are examples of statistical properties that can be extracted from the time series. In this thesis, we are particularly interested in describing complex phenomena in which the stationary distribution of the time series of the main dynamical variable (the signal) exhibits large deviations from Gaussian statistics, possibly showing long and heavy tails. This kind of phenomena is present in many areas of physics, biology, and economics. However, our interest is focused on spectral fluctuations in non-integrable ballistic cavities, intensity fluctuations in random lasers, turbulence in fluids, stock prices fluctuations in financial markets. We shall attempt to describe these phenomena as a composition of distributions with distinct space/time scales which arise from a hierarchical dynamics with a coupling between contiguous scales. The model to be used, denominated H-Theory, was recently proposed by our research group and consists of a set of coupled stochastic differential equations, whose stationary solution leads to a parametric family of distributions represented by Fox H-function. This result unifies and generalizes the universality classes of superstatistics, which is a formalism that has been successfully used to describe systems with two separated time scales.

Abstract:
This thesis uses a modern control approach to address the Internet traffic control issues in the Transport Layer. Through literature review, we are interested in using the H2/H∞ formulation to obtain the good transient performance of an H2 controller and the good robust property from an H∞ controller while avoiding their deficiencies. The H2/H∞ controller is designed by formulating an optimization problem using the H2-norm and the H∞-norm of the system, which can be solved by an LMI approach using MATLAB. Our design starts with the modeling of a router and the control system by augmenting the network plant function with the Sensitivity function S, the Complementary Sensitivity function T and the Input Sensitivity function U. These sensitivity functions along with their weight functions are used to monitor the closed-loop dynamics of the traffic control. By choosing different combinations of the sensitivity functions, we can obtain the SU, the ST and the STU controllers. Both the window-based and rate-based version of these different types of H2/H∞ controllers have been designed and investigated. We have also proved that these controllers are stable using Lyapunov’s First Method. Next, we verify the performance of the controllers by OPNET simulation using different performance measures of queue length, throughput, queueing delay, packet loss rate and goodput. Our performance evaluation via simulation has demonstrated the robustness and the better transient response such as the rise/fall time and the peak queue value. We have also investigated the controller performances subject to network dynamics as well as through comparison with other controllers. Finally, we have improved these controllers for real-time application. They are capable to update/renew the controller in a short time whenever new network parameter values are detected so that the optimum performance can be maintained.

Brown, Cathrin Ann Ruth. "Salugenic relationships that rehumanise : a grounded theory of congruence." Thesis, University of Kent, 2014. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/44562/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is a mixed methods study, conducted in a therapeutic faith community, using quantitative (CGI, SCL-90-R and WHODAS-II) and qualitative interview data that generated a theory of congruence. Early findings demonstrated that context changed the dynamics of the relationship between the researcher and the participants. This led to dissemblance in responses to the outcome measures. A critical realist ‘value laden’ approach was used which challenges the existing tendency to privilege quantitative over qualitative data by proposing that context and subjectivity are involved in all aspects of interpersonal research. The theory of congruence proposes that the key to personal positive change is the ability to recognise personal incongruence. Incongruence was identified as a fragmented self, social isolation, crisis of faith and lack of environment ‘fit’. Becoming congruent was identified in three areas, a whole self, a social self and a spiritual self. The process of becoming congruent with self begins with external sources that are relationships and environment. These relationships have been termed salugenic (health-producing) relationships, which are voluntary, volitional and mutual. Such relationships resist hierarchy, promoting positive power and autonomy. The theory of congruence proposes that individuals who have been socially isolated learn how to form salugenic relationships that facilitate salugenic emotion. A congruent environment is where individuals feel they belong, find hope, safety and freedom. It is also a place that is congruent with their beliefs. The combination of congruent relationships and environment leads to the process of finding congruence with self within the context of having personal choice. The participants in this study were incongruent with professionalised and structuralised services that can be too rigid to meet the needs of the emotionally and mentally ill. Congruence theory can be applied by any organisation to prioritise structure, relationship and choice that rehumanises mental health care.

Full text
Abstract:
We continue to build support for the proposal to use H II galaxies (HIIGx) and giant extragalactic H II regions (GEHR) as standard candles to construct the Hubble diagram at redshifts beyond the current reach of Type Ia supernovae. Using a sample of 25 high-redshift HIIGx, 107 local HIIGx, and 24 GEHR, we confirm that the correlation between the emission -line luminosity and ionized -gas velocity dispersion is a viable luminosity indicator, and use it to test and compare the standard model Lambda CDM and the R-h = ct universe by optimizing the parameters in each cosmology using a maximization of the likelihood function. For the flat Lambda CDM model, the best fit is obtained with Omega(m) = 0.40(-0.09)(+0.09). However, statistical tools, such as the Akaike (AIC), Kullback (KIC) and Bayes (BIC) Information Criteria favour R-h = Ct over the standard model with a likelihood of approximate to 94.8-98.8 per cent versus only per cent. For wCDM (the version of ACDM with a dark -energy equation of state wde = Pde/Pde rather than was t WA = 1), a statistically acceptable fit is realized with Omega(m) = 0.221(-0.14)(+0.16) and wde = 0.511'0'21-5" which, however, are not fully consistent with their concordance values. In this case, wCDM has two more free parameters than R-h = Ct, and is penalized more heavily by these criteria. We find that R-h = Ct is strongly favoured over wCDM with a likelihood of approximate to 92.9-99.6 per cent versus only 0.4-7.1 per cent. The current HIIGx sample is already large enough for the BIC to rule out ACDM/wCDM in favour of R-h = Ct at a confidence level approaching 3 sigma.

Abstract:
In the 20th century, Critical Theory has been very influential on every discipline of social sciences including international relations. According to Critical IR Theory, traditional theories are problem solving and try to explain repetition and recurrence, rather than change
however, the main subject matter of an IR theory should be the change itself. The idea of change is also constitutive of Habermasian political thought. Jü
rgen Habermas, as a critical theorist, has developed the model of Deliberative Democracy to provoke a change in the political life of the Western countries towards a more ethical politics. According to Habermas, such a change will eliminate the legitimacy crisis occurred in Western democracies. Therefore, Habermas aims at strengthening the moral basis of democratic understanding in order to make masses participate actively in decision making processes. According to him, rational consensus must be at the centre of democracy, and it can be reached, only if every part of the deliberation has the opportunity to express their arguments equally. Once the idea of rational consensus becomes a regulative rule of democracy, it is possible to change the nature of politics, including international politics

Stone, Tobias. "An examination of startup accelerators using social network theory." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2018. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/34731/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis combines a literature review and a case study in order to examine startup accelerators as social networks. The literature review looks at two distinct bodies of research; the first on Social Network Theory, in order to create a framework within which to describe an accelerator as a social network, the second on startup accelerators in order to understand their structure and evolution as business support programs. The case study uses EyeFocus Accelerator, founded by this researcher, to test some of the ideas formulated from the literature. The literature demonstrates that accelerators are social networks, and the dynamics between the different actors in those networks can be explained and defined using the vocabulary and concepts of Social Network Theory. This describes the structure of the accelerator network, and how such a network is able to reward people with Social Capital, which is observed in this thesis to be the currency of accelerators. Consequently, the unique nature of the research in this thesis is to describe accelerators using the language and concepts of Social Network Theory, providing new insights into how and why accelerators work. This understanding identifies that value in accelerators lies in their ability to facilitate the flow of non-redundant information, and to provide early access to this information. Creating this value also enables accelerators to withdraw access to that value as a threat of sanction against bad actors. Other aspects of the social network structure and behaviour of accelerators are examined, including the tendency of weak ties and non-redundancy of information to decay over time, suggesting that this may explain the typical fixed term of most accelerators. Combined, this theory leads to an accelerator being described as a dynamic social network with a high level of closure at the core, set within a weak network architecture, with many weak ties, and consequently many bridging ties. It is policed using link reciprocity, and its currency is Social Capital. The skill used to operate in this network involves having complex role and status sets.

Yang, Lin. "Linear robust H-infinity stochastic control theory on the insurance premium-reserve processes." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2015. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/2037227/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the stability analysis of linear discrete-time premium-reserve (P-R) systems in a stochastic framework. Such systems are characterised by a mixture of the premium pricing process and the medium- and long- term stability in the accumulated reserve (surplus) policy, and they play a key role in the modern actuarial literature. Although the mathematical and practical analysis of P-R systems is well studied and motivated, their stability properties have not been studied thoughtfully and they are restricted in a deterministic framework. In Engineering, during the last three decades, many useful techniques are developed in linear robust control theory. This thesis is the first attempt to use some useful tools from linear robust control theory in order to analyze the stability of these classical insurance systems. Analytically, in this thesis, P-R systems are first formulated with structural properties such that time-varying delays, random disturbance and parameter uncertainties. Then as an extension of the previous literature, the results of stabilization and the robust H-infinity control of P-R systems are modelled in stochastic framework. Meanwhile, the risky investment impact on the P-R system stability condition is shown. In this approach, the potential effects from changes in insurer's investment strategy is discussed. Next we develop regime switching P-R systems to describe the abrupt structural changes in the economic fundamentals as well as the periodic switches in the parameters. The results for the regime switching P-R system are illustrated by means of two different approaches: markovian and arbitrary regime switching systems. Finally, we show how robust guaranteed cost control could be implemented to solve an optimal insurance problem. In each chapter, Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) sufficient conditions are derived to solve the proposed sub-problems and numerical examples are given to illustrate the applicability of the theoretical findings.

Abstract:
It can be argued that we live in a ‘work-centred’ society, since not only has society witnessed a massive quantitative expansion of paid-work, but many also accept that, at this present historical moment, the tasks, relationships and time-structures of work occupy a central place in people’s sense of well-being. Critical social theorists have advanced an alternative perspective and undertaken a critique of work, responding to the interlinked social problems of mass unemployment, inequality, environmental degradation, and low well-being, by promoting an anti-productivist politics which calls for a decentralisation of work in everyday life. Theorists such as André Gorz have suggested that such proposals resonate with a cultural disenchantment with work, as well as growing desire for non-material goods such as autonomy, free-time, good-health and conviviality. Such claims, however, have rarely been explored on an empirical level. One of the central questions that remain unanswered is whether and how it is actually possible for people to live with significantly lower levels of work. In response to this gap in the literature, the present study undertakes a qualitative investigation into the lives of a diverse sample of people, each of whom has chosen to work less or to give up working altogether. In-depth interviews explore the work experiences and moral priorities that informed the participant’s lifestyle changes. Also explores are the trials of working less, including how participants coped with less money, and how they coped with the stigmas attached to working less, in the midst of a society that continues to attach moral significance to having a job. Are the participants deviants, malingerers, and failures, or might society learn something positive and inspiring from their actions and choices?

Abstract:
This paper considers the control of externally symmetric vector second order systems using an analytical upper bound method. The structural model is a cantilevered aluminum beam with a collocated pair of piezoceramic patches to serve as actuators and sensors. A computationally efficient method for approximating the H-infinity norm for externally symmetric systems is presented. The approximation method is then used to calculate a scalar output feedback controller to guarantee a closed-loop norm less than any user defined value. This method is tested with a finite-element representation of the beam, and then verified experimentally.

Fook, Janis. "Developing an integrated framework for critical reflection : from practice, to theory, towards research." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2009. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/339973/.

Full text
Abstract:
Critical reflection is increasingly regarded as a necessary requirement of professional practice. Yet there are many differing perspectives on what it is, and how it should be taught in professional education, and it is not easy to see how they all relate. This is often confusing for students and educators. This potentially leads to poor standards of reflection, and little rigorous research or development of critical reflection. This thesis aims to address this problem by developing an integrated understanding of critical reflection. It draws together the different perspectives on critical reflection (including reflective practice, the concept of reflexivity, postmodernism and critical perspectives), and shows how these different understandings can be integrated under the rubric of learning from experience. Although the idea of learning from experience in fact underpins early understandings of critical reflection, this thesis demonstrates how later formulations add to and develop this conception. In doing this, the thesis traces the practical and theoretical development of critical reflection into a framework which might be used as a basis for researching professional practice experience. The thesis begins with an introduction which outlines the context of my thinking about social work knowledge, in which my thinking about critical reflection is located. The body of the thesis traces how I have developed these frameworks, from a mix of practical experience, theorizing from different perspectives, and reviews of literature, into the potential for its use as a research method. The concluding section of the thesis returns to the original outline of social work knowledge, and shows how this integrated understanding of critical reflection is also congruent with basic principles of social work. In this sense, the development of thinking about critical reflection is also a contribution to the development of social work knowledge.

Mazataud, Camille. "Error concealment for H.264 video transmission." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/34715.

Full text
Abstract:
Video coding standards such as H.264 AVC (Advanced Video Coding) rely on predictive coding to achieve high compression efficiency. Predictive coding consists of predicting each frame using preceding frames. However, predictive coding incurs a cost when transmitting over unreliable networks: frames are no longer independent and the loss of data in one frame may affect future frames. In this thesis, we study the effectiveness of Flexible Macroblock Ordering (FMO) in mitigating the effect of errors on the decoded video and propose solutions to improve the error concealment on H.264 decoders. After introducing the subject matter, we present the H.264 profiles and briefly determine their intended applications. Then we describe FMO and justify its usefulness for transmission over lossy networks. More precisely, we study the cost in terms of overheads and the improvements it offers in visual quality for damaged video frames. The unavailability of FMO in most H.264 profiles leads us to design a lossless FMO removal scheme, which allows the playback of FMO-encoded video on non FMO-compliant decoders. Then, we describe the process of removing the FMO structure but also underline some limitations that prevent the application of the scheme. Finally, we assess the induced overheads and propose a model to predict these overheads when FMO Type 1 is employed. Eventually, we develop a new error concealment method to enhance video quality without relying on channel feedback. This method is shown to be superior to existing methods, including those from the JM reference software and can be applied to compensate for the limitations of the scheme proposed FMO-removal scheme. After introducing our new method, we evaluate its performance and compare it to some classical algorithms.

Gillani, Alvina. "Reconciling demands of conscience : a grounded theory of consumer behaviour in the Fairtrade context." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/59715/.

Full text
Abstract:
Fairtrade is a trading partnership which contributes to sustainable development by offering better conditions while safeguarding the rights of marginalised producers in the global South. This study presents a grounded theory of consumer purchase decision making in the context of Fairtrade. This thesis has identified the consumers' main concern to be the Demands of Conscience when faced with the choice of buying Fairtrade products, and presents the emergent grounded theory of Reconciling Demands of Conscience which explains conceptually the means by which consumers process this concern. The emergent process of ' Reconciling Demands of Conscience' is conceptualised as consisting of the four distinct stages of Comfort Zoning, Evaluating, Acting and Reflecting, with an experiential feedback loop from the purchase outcomes which could affect subsequent purchase decisions. This study also conceptualises consumer behaviour as mutable as a result of external or internal influences. Furthermore, five emergent behavioural types of Supporting and Committed, Supporting but Vacillating, Questioning but Supporting, Sceptical, and Cynical are presented on a behavioural continuum and the concept of Behavioural Mutability as emerged from the data, which explicates the potential for behavioural change within these five behavioural groups is proposed. The theory has been developed employing the complete gamut of classic grounded theory procedures and is based on seventy one-to-one, in-depth interviews, and observations with an eclectic mix of consumers. These interviews were further augmented by having respondents provide till receipts so as to identify any difference between stated and actual behaviour. The theory contributes to the extant fair trade consumer behaviour literature by explaining the significance of behavioural nuances involved in the consumer's purchase decision making, highlighting some important considerations for fair trade academics and practitioners. Furthermore, the theory of Reconciling Demands of Conscience, because of its conceptual nature also demonstrates relevance outwith its substantive area. Most notably, offering contributions to current research on attitude-behaviour discrepancy in ethical consumer behaviour, guilt coping mechanisms, and to ethical decision making literature by offering a conceptual explanation of consumer purchase behaviour when faced with an ethical option.

Full text
Abstract:
Character education assumes responsibility for influencing and educating youth on morals, values, beliefs and positive character attributes in order to influence them into being positive and contributing members of society. Character education is most often taught in the home, schools and community. One community organization that integrates character education into its programming is 4-H Youth Development. The purpose of this research is to view the relationships between character education and 4-H, and more so whether Kentucky 4-H programs influence the knowledge, attitudes and practices of positive character among youth leaders. This study also looked at length of 4-H involvement and gender in order to determine influence. It was found that Kentucky 4-H programs do influence positive character among youth leaders, as youth indicated that they had gained character knowledge from 4-H involvement, as well as the program had made them a better person. It was also found that the gender of youth or their length of involvement in 4-H programs does not affect the character knowledge, attitudes and practices gained from involvement. The author recommends using these positive findings to continue to expand Kentucky programs and recruit adults and youth.

Brown, Abigail. "The journey towards resilience following a traumatic birth : a grounded theory." Thesis, City, University of London, 2018. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/20852/.

Full text
Abstract:
Statistics have shown that 30% of women in the UK experience childbirth as traumatising, and some may as a consequence go on to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, some women do not go on to develop PTSD. As this is a relatively common occurrence, an important question is: How do women who experience a difficult birth develop resilience? Research has mainly focused on the development of PTSD in such women and researchers have therefore recently tried to shift the focus to positive outcomes following a traumatic birth. The focus of positive outcomes has mainly been around post-traumatic growth and researchers have called for more investigations into the area of resilience. At present, research is still sparse in the area of traumatic birth and resilience. Objectives: The aim of this study was to understand the process of fostering resilience after a traumatic birth. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight female participants aged 30 to 50 years who experienced a traumatic childbirth. A constructivist grounded theory was used to analyse interviews. Results: A new model of the process of resilience following a traumatic birth was devised, which emerged from the data. The core category of ‘The Journey towards Resilience following a Traumatic Birth’ was described and connected to the five following categories: Category 1: Traumatic birth: To be cared for ‒ who’s accountable?; Category 2: Moving towards faith and spirituality; Category 3: Motherhood becomes you; Category 4: Supportive relationships; Category 5: Self-care ‒ as a way of owning my journey. Discussion: The model suggests that the journey towards resilience is a process whereby women move towards internal or external resources or both at different points on their journey. This study brings new findings to the area of traumatic birth and resilience which will help guide counselling psychologists and health professionals on how to promote resilience in birthing mothers.

van, de Velde Melanie. "Beyond shareholder theory : exploring effective business models balancing profits and purpose." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/30692/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is increased recognition that an economy based on a ‘shareholder paradigm’ has led to detrimental outcomes for society and the environment based on the assumption that profit maximisation should occur even at the expense of silent or weak stakeholders. Theories such as corporate social responsibility (CSR), shared value and stakeholder theory have added an element of purpose to the role of business next to a profit motive. However, they focus on ‘low hanging fruits’, and fail to clarify how value creation for society is effectively integrated into strategic decisions such as “how to justify fair prices to producers in developing countries instead of minimising costs to maximise profits and shareholder return?” This study explores how to combine the best of both social and commercial logics to effectively achieve ‘profits and purpose’. In total 93 interviews were conducted across ten case studies and sector expert interviews. First, key concepts were derived from a cross-case comparison and data analysis in the context of training and employment social enterprises in the UK. To increase robustness the proposed concepts were studied in a wider context developed from: The Netherlands, India, Ecuador, US, Bangladesh, Ivory Coast, and Ghana. Contrary to the predominant focus in the literature warning of ‘mission drift’ suggesting to prioritise ‘purpose’, this study shows that ‘leading with the business’ leads to better outcomes. By developing a business model around market demand instead of social need a stronger financial platform is created to pursue social aims, and clients can develop their potential more in line with market demand. Key factors are proposed that contribute to better outcomes including: ‘avoiding the pity purchase’ by positioning the enterprise around the value proposition; selecting markets based on commercial potential; managing a ‘blended income stream’; and providing a ‘balanced work environment’. The findings highlight that both commercial and social logics have a role to play, contrary to studies suggesting that one logic should supersede the other, but require different emphasis in each business model area. By adopting a macro-perspective the study gained further insights into incorporating ‘purpose’ as part of mainstream business. A ‘profits for purpose theory’ is proposed as alternative to CSR, shared value and stakeholder theory to legitimately allocate resources to create value for society beyond the limited scope of ‘low hanging fruits’. By integrating principles of justice at the core of the business model, businesses can empower individuals and communities to contribute their potential in return for fair rewards. As Adam Smith proposed by using the profit motive with strong principles of justice major issues in society can be prevented and addressed to create a better world for current and future generations.

Pokrud, Boonyarit. "H∞ optimal control : general solution by interpolation and design with multiple objective functions." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1989. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/847911/.

Full text
Abstract:
A new method for solving Hinfinity control problems is developed. The method makes use of the Youla parametrization to characterize the set of all stabilizing controllers K(s) in terms of a stable function Q(s). and also to transform the Hinfinity control problem into a model-matching problem with an objective function E(s) being linear in Q(s). The model-matching problem is then solved by using the interpolation results of Hung. In the general case (i.e. problems of the 3rd kind) closed-form state-space characterizations of optimal and suboptimal solutions for Q(s) and E(s) are given. Furthermore, the solutions generally only require to solve two standard algebraic Riccati equations of smaller size than the McMillan degree of the (generalized) plant. This has an advantage of alleviating the computation burden associated with the ?-iteration required for determining the attainable minimum of ||E(s)||[infinity]. The Hinfinity approach to feedback design with multiple objective functions is studied in this thesis. For a system with two objective functions T[i](s), (i = 1, 2) a design criterion of minimizing the function max (||T[1](s)||[infinity], ||T[2](s)||[infinity]) subject to internal stability of the closed-loop system is proposed. The problem is formulated as an Hinfinity control problem and an iterative algorithm for obtaining a solution is given. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design technique for tightly bounding and shaping the frequency responses of two objective functions. The application of Hinfinity feedback design techniques to the control of flexible structures is investigated. Experiments are conducted in order to evaluate the use of the Hinfinity approach to the control of flexible structures. An Hinfinity optimal controller is designed and implemented in a laboratory system to manoeuvre a cantilever flexible beam and simultaneously control its vibrations. The controller performance is then assessed. The results obtained are shown to be satisfactory and encouraging.

Leaf, Kyle, and Fulvio Melia. "Analysing H(z) data using two-point diagnostics." OXFORD UNIV PRESS, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625514.

Full text
Abstract:
Measurements of the Hubble constantH(z) are increasingly being used to test the expansion rate predicted by various cosmological models. But the recent application of two-point diagnostics, such as Om(zi, zj) and Omh(2)(zi, zj), has produced considerable tension between Lambda CDM's predictions and several observations, with other models faring even worse. Part of this problem is attributable to the continued mixing of truly model-independent measurements using the cosmic-chronometer approach, and model-dependent data extracted from baryon acoustic oscillations. In this paper, we advance the use of two-point diagnostics beyond their current status, and introduce new variations, which we call Delta h(zi, zj), that are more useful for model comparisons. But we restrict our analysis exclusively to cosmic-chronometer data, which are truly model independent. Even for these measurements, however, we confirm the conclusions drawn by earlier workers that the data have strongly non-Gaussian uncertainties, requiring the use of both 'median' and 'mean' statistical approaches. Our results reveal that previous analyses using two-point diagnostics greatly underestimated the errors, thereby misinterpreting the level of tension between theoretical predictions and H(z) data. Instead, we demonstrate that as of today, only Einstein-de Sitter is ruled out by the two-point diagnostics at a level of significance exceeding similar to 3s. The R-h = ct universe is slightly favoured over the remaining models, including Lambda cold dark matter and Chevalier-Polarski-Linder, though all of them (other than Einstein-de Sitter) are consistent to within 1 sigma with the measured mean of the Delta h(zi, zj) diagnostics.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates Bicoprime Factorisations (BCFs) and their possible uses in robust control theory. BCFs are a generalisation of coprime factorisations, which have been well known and widely used by the control community over the last few decades. Though they were introduced at roughly the same time as coprime factorisations, they have been largely ignored, with only a very small number of results derived in the literature. BCFs are first introduced and the fundamental theory behind them is developed. This includes results such as internal stability in terms of BCFs, parametrisation of the BCFs of a plant and state space constructions of BCFs. Subsequently, a BCF uncertainty structure is proposed, that encompasses both left and right coprime factor uncertainty. A robust control synthesis procedure is then developed with respect to this BCF uncertainty structure. The proposed synthesis method is shown to be advantageous in the following two aspects: (1) the standard assumptions associated with H-infinity control synthesis are directly fulfilled without the need of loop shifting or normalisation of the generalised plant and (2) any or all of the plant's unstable dynamics can be ignored, thus leading to a reduction in the dimensions of the Algebraic Riccati Equations (AREs) that need to be solved to achieve robust stabilisation. Normalised BCFs are then defined, which are shown to provide many advantages, especially in the context of robust control synthesis. When using a normalised BCF of the plant, lower bounds on the achievable BCF robust stability margin can be easily and directly computed a priori, as is the case for normalised coprime factors. Although the need for an iterative procedure is not completely avoided when designing an optimal controller, it is greatly simplified with the iteration variable being scalar. Unlike coprime factorisations where a single ARE needs to be solved to achieve normalisation, two coupled AREs must be satisfied for a BCF to be normalised. Two recursive methods are proposed to solve this problem. Lastly, an example is presented where the theory developed is used in a practical scenario. A quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is considered and a normalised BCF controller is designed which in combination with feedback linearisation is used to control both the attitude and position of the vehicle.
