Noble, Duncan Paul. "Tectonic Geomorphology and Paleoseismicity of the Northern Esk Fault, North Canterbury, New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Geological Sciences, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6264.

Abstract:
Geomorphic, structural and chronological data are used to establish the late Quaternary paleoseismicity of the active dextral-oblique Northern Esk Fault in North Canterbury, New Zealand. Detailed field mapping of the preserved c. 35 km of surface traces between the Hurunui River and Ashley Head reveals variations in strike ranging from 005° to 057°. Along with kinematic data collected from fault plane striae and offset geomorphic markers along the length of the fault these variations are used to distinguish six structural subsections of the main trace, four dextral-reverse and two dextral-normal. Displacements of geomorphic markers such as minor streams and ridges are measured using differential GPS and rangefinder equipment to reveal lateral offsets ranging from 3.4 to 23.7 m and vertical offsets ranging from < 1 to 13.5 m. Characteristic single event displacements of c. 5 m and c. 2 m have been calculated for strike-slip and reverse sections respectively. The use of fault scaling relationships reveals an anomalously high displacement to surface rupture length ratio when compared to global data sets. Fault scaling relationships based on width limited ruptures and magnitude probabilities from point measurements of displacement imply earthquake magnitudes of Mw 7.0 to 7.5. Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages from displaced Holocene alluvial terraces at the northern extent of the active trace along with OSL and radiocarbon samples of the central sections constrain the timing of the last two surface rupturing events (11.15 ±1.65 and 3.5 ± 2.8 ka) and suggest a recurrence interval of c. 5612 ± 445 years and late Quaternary reverse and dextral slip rates of c. 0.31 mm/yr and 0.82 mm/yr respectively. The results of this study show that the Northern Esk Fault accommodates an important component of the c. 0.7 – 2 mm/yr of unresolved strain across the plate boundary within the North Canterbury region and affirm the Esk Fault as a source of potentially damaging ground shaking in the Canterbury region.

Leith, Kerry John. "The role of deep-seated landsliding in the geomorphic evolution of the Esk Valley, Hawke's Bay: an innovative approach to hazard evaluation." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Geology, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6370.

Full text
Abstract:
An engineering geomorphological investigation of the Esk River catchment has been undertaken to quantify the relationships between the valley's geomorphic evolution, the many 1-10km2 deep-seated landslides present within the catchment, and a significant flood event that inundated the lower valley in April 1938. The identification of key geomorphic processes enabled the assessment of catchment's geomorphic stability, the development of generalised models for landsliding, and the delineation of a pre-disposed zone of instability. This information is then applied to assess key geomorphic controls on the flood event. The region lies within the forearc basin of the obliquely convergent Hikurangi Margin, and is underlain by soft, gently eastward dipping Pliocene marine strata. Structurally it is dominated by its close proximity to the Mohaka Fault, as well as two westward-dipping blind thrusts beneath the valley identified in this study: the Wakarara Fault – Trelinnoe Sector, and the Eastern Patoka Fault. Evidence from seismic reflection surveys indicates that these have both been active since the early Mangapanian (2.8 - 3.2 Ma), and an analysis of stream longitudinal profiles and plan form suggests limited displacement may have taken place within the last 10,000 years. A survey of rock mass defects within a representative sample area in the centre of the valley highlights four sub-vertical joint sets; conjugate sets strike 153° and 246°, and another sub-parallel to the folding strikes 033°. These defects correlate well with lineaments identified in aerial and satellite photographs and are attributed to extension of the sediments across the top of fault-propagated folds. The generally low power streams have exploited these defects and highly incised channels now run almost exclusively along them. Deep-seated landslides occur generally within the area of folding and their extents are defined by lineaments inferred to correspond to persistent joints in the rock mass. The slides are translational, and are facilitated by up to 80m of incision - ongoing since the abandonment of an extensive terrace inferred to be Ohakean (18-10ka) in age. Basal failure surfaces commonly dip at angles as low as 6°, and a combination of tectonically induced flexural shears sub-parallel to bedding and very low shear strength tuffaceous horizons are inferred to provide planes of sufficiently low shear strength to facilitate failure. While most deep-seated landslides appear active, there is no evidence to suggest they were substantially affected by recent major tectonic (e.g. 1931 Ms7.8 Hawke's Bay Earthquake) or climatic events (e.g. 1938 c.1 :1000yr Esk Valley Storm). The headwaters of the catchment are located on the Maungaharuru Range. This rises from 500m - l300m and provides baseflow to the Esk River. Extensive deep-seated landslides dominate the eastern face of the range. These are inferred to have been triggered by the removal of lateral support at the foot of the range following significant incision and denudation in the last interglacial c.125ka. A deep-seated gravitational slope deformation is proposed to extend to 1.2km below sea level, and provide a driving mechanism for the slides. While the 1938 Esk Valley flood was primarily a result of an exceptional three day storm event, suspended sediment load was also an important factor. This is inferred to have resulted primarily from channel erosion in soft colluvial sediments on the Maungaharuru Range. Combined with significant sediment load from shallow landsliding and possible tectonic subsidence preconditioning the lower reaches of the aggradational valley, this lead to c.1 m of silt being deposited in the lower reaches of the aggradational valley. Rapid stream incision in response to uplift in 1931 and aggradation in 1938 is returning the lower reach of the river to grade and decreasing the flood hazard.

Mittelstaedt, Jana. "Southward propagation of the Marlborough Fault System: Fault linkage and blind faults in North Canterbury." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Geological Sciences, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6523.

Full text
Abstract:
Geomorphological and paleoseismic studies provide insight into the fault geometry and kinematics of a series of dextral northeast striking faults, including the Porters Pass, Hawdon, Bullock Hill, and Esk faults, in the South Island of New Zealand. These faults show post-glacial offsets that are significantly larger than predicted from co-seismic displacement - surface rupture length regressions derived from empirical relationships. Geomorphological mapping reveals slip rates as high as 9 mm/year for the Hawdon fault and Bullock Hill fault over an expected fault length of c. 140 km. Surface expressions of some parts of the studied faults are obscured by glacial gravels, indicating that blind faults are present in parts of the Sourthern Alps and may be the source for a component of a reported slip deficit in North Canterbury. Concluding from comparing scaling relationship results for the individual faults I hypothesize that the Porters Pass, Hawdon, Bullock Hill and Esk faults are segments of an incipient fault system that stretches from the western tip of the Porters Pass fault to the Hope fault, east of Hanmer Springs. Considering the location, similar strike and dextral deformation mode, I suggest that this 140 km long dextral strike-slip fault system marks the southernmost extension of the Marlborough Fault System resulting from the ongoing southward propagation of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary in New Zealand's South Island.

Hicks, Malcolm Andrew. "Geotechnical Investigations of Wind Turbine Foundations Using Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW)." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Geological Sciences, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6519.

Full text
Abstract:
The geophysical technique known as Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves, or MASW (Park et al., 1999) is a relatively new seismic characterisation method which utilises Rayleigh waves propagation. With MASW, the frequency dependent, planar travelling Rayleigh waves are created by a seismic source and then measured by an array of geophone receivers. The recorded data is used to image characteristics of the subsurface. This thesis explains how MASW was used as a geotechnical investigation tool on windfarms in the lower North Island, New Zealand, to determine the stiffness of the subsurface at each wind turbine site. Shear‐wave velocity (VS) profiles at each site were determined through the processing of the MASW data, which were then used to determine physical properties of the underlying, weathered greywacke. The primary research site, the Te Rere Hau Windfarm in the Tararua Ranges of the North Island, is situated within the Esk Head Belt of Torlesse greywacke (Lee & Begg, 2002). Due to the high level of tectonic activity in the area, along with the high rates of weathering, the greywacke material onsite is highly fractured and weathering grades vary significantly, both vertically and laterally. MASW was performed to characterise the physical properties at each turbine site through the weathering profile. The final dataset included 1‐dimensional MASW shear‐wave evaluations from 100 turbine sites. In addition, Poisson’s ratio and density values were characterised through the weathering profile for the weathered greywacke. During the geotechnical foundation design at the Te Rere Hau Windfarm site, a method of converting shear wave velocity profiles was utilised. MASW surveying was used to determine VS profiles with depth, which were converted to elastic modulus profiles, with the input parameters of Poisson’s ratio and density. This study focuses on refining and improving the current method used for calculating elastic modulus values from shear‐wave velocities, primarily by improving the accuracy of the input parameters used in the calculation. Through the analysis of both geotechnical and geophysical data, the significant influence of overburden pressure, or depth, on the shear wave velocity was identified. Through each of the weathering grades, there was a non‐linear increase in shear wave velocity with depth. This highlights the need for overburden pressure conditions to be considered before assigning characteristic shear wave velocity values to different lithologies. Further to the dataset analysis of geotechnical and geophysical information, a multiple variant non‐linear regression analysis was performed on the three variables of shear wave velocity, depth and weathering grade. This produced a predictive equation for determining shear wave velocity within the Esk Head belt ‘greywacke’ when depth and weathering data are known. If the insitu geological conditions are not comparable to that of the windfarm sites in this study, a set of guidelines have been developed, detailing the most efficient and cost effective method of using MASW surveying to calculate the elastic modulus through the depth profile of an investigation site.

Abstract:
This thesis is an intendedly critical, non-deterministic/non-reductionist, and, a tentatively theoretical, post-disciplinary narrative of the class struggles in Turkey over the period of 1989-1995. Much of the argumentation draws upon a critical reading of the corporatist literature, and, radical Political Economy, specifically focusing upon Marx&rsquo
s theory of distribution. Distribution is seen as, inter alia, a moment of production, as production-determined distribution. Wages and profits are argued to be determined as the joint effect of class struggles in production, in the realm of ideology/discourse, the condition of Labour, the State power, and, the organisational capacity of Labour. Particular emphasis is placed upon the formation of new Capital strategies in the late Eighties and early Nineties. More specifically, the ESK is seen as the archetype of the so-called competitive corporatism in Turkey. Competitive corporatism is a State form, a partial phenomenon, and, a question of hegemony.

Engström, Adam. "Metal mobility during metamorphism and formation of orogenic gold deposits: Insights from the Dalradian of Scotland." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för geologiska vetenskaper, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-92297.

Full text
Abstract:
Orogenic gold deposits occur within metamorphic belts throughout the world and have through time represented the source for over 25% of the world’s gold production. Although orogenic gold deposits are of great economic importance, controversies exist on the subject of fluid and metal sources and there have been few studies of gold´s distribution and mobility outside of large economic deposits. Research made by Pitcairn et al. (2006), on the Mesozoic Otago and Alpine schists of New Zealand, observed systematic depletion of Au and a suite of 6 associated elements with increasing metamorphic grade. This depletion was identical to the suite of elements enriched in the Otago gold deposits and provided strong evidence that orogenic gold deposits form due to metamorphic processes. The mobilization of metals was attributed to the recrystallization of sulfide minerals during prograde metamorphism causing dehydration and release of metal-rich metamorphic fluids.  This thesis is part of a larger project aimed at testing the “Otago model” in a classic metamorphic terrain: The Dalradian metamorphic belt of Scotland. Rocks in the study are from the southern higlands group and the Appin and Argyll group which range in metamorphic grade from chlorite zone greenschist facies to sillimanite zone amphibolite facies. Three main aspects, which supplement earlier research, are addressed in this study: 1) Investigation of the sulfide paragenesis at Loch Lomond and Stonehaven was carried out to map the evolution of sulfides with metamorphic grade and the possible relations to the distribution of gold. Using SEM scanning to quantify the abundance of different sulfide minerals together with previous data on the Glen Esk region, a complex sulfide evolution pattern for the Dalradian Supergroup is identified. The sulfide evolution describes the same changes in texture and chemistry as observed in the Otago Schists but is made complex by the difference in geological evolution for the different regions. 2) Reinvestigation of the higher grade zones of Glen Esk (staurolite to sillimanite) was carried out as samples from the previous study were very weathered. Results from ultralow detection limit methods (HG-AFS and a gold detection method developed by Pitcairn et al. 2006) showed significant systematic depletion of Au and As with metamorphic grade. From chlorite to sillimanite zone average values of Au and As were showed to decrease by 65% and 88% respectively. Furthermore, a suite of 10 major and 12 trace elements were analyzed using ICP methods showing no trends of systematic depletion with increased metamorphic grade.  3) Investigation of Pb-Ag Veining and vein samples from each of the metamorphic index mineral zones in the Glen Esk area was carried out to identify fluid composition and ore mineralogy. Using microthermometry and Raman laser spectroscopy two distinct fluids were identified. The first type is a H2O-CO2-N2-salt fluid of low salinity (0-15 weight percent NaCl equivalent) and medium temperature (150 to 250 °C) locally containing minor amounts of CH4. It is found in the veins from the mineral index zones of Glen Esk and was formed in the ductile regime most likely related to late stage metamorphic devolatilization released during Caledonian uplift of the Dalradian. Pb-Ag veins from the locality of Hardhill host the second fluid type which was formed in the brittle regime  accompanied by brecciation as a high salinity (15 to 20 weight percent NaCl equivalent) low temperature (70-140°C) H2O-salt fluid with calcic composition was precipitated. This fluid bears much resemblance to Carboniferous calcic brines responsible for economic base-metal precipitation with widespread occurrence in southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland. Results of this thesis show many similarities with the Otago study, with a connection between metal mobility and metamorphic grade, providing support for the dehydration model as a viable mechanism for the generation of orogenic gold deposits.

Butterfield, Carol Long. "Multiple stories: Developing literacy in an ESL/ESP aviation program." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186785.

Full text
Abstract:
A basic goal of an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program is to enable the language learner to function within an academic discipline, science and technology occupation, or a vocational occupation by using English. This teacher researcher case study explores the English literacy development of three adult Japanese student pilots within a holistic English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program. The setting of this five month naturalistic case study was on a small airport in the Southwestern United States. Experiential literacy events were provided to encourage student pilots to develop English literacy while learning aviation concepts. A preliminary case study with one student was conducted to evaluate and modify data collection methods, and ESP curriculum and organization. Data collection included participant observation and field notes, dialogue journals between students and the teacher researcher, oral and written interviews, checklists, and audio-taping methods. Three themes emerged through the constant comparative method of data analysis: (1) self perception, (2) developing relationships, and (3) developing literacy strategies. These three themes reflect the process of how and through what particular issues students developed English literacy. Findings from the analysis of data suggest that English literacy develops differently, and has distinct meanings for each person. In contrast to traditional ESP and ESL programs that emphasizes the transmission of language, a holistic ESP program provides opportunities for adult student pilots to develop English literacy through a process of inventing and appropriating English for his/her own purposes and needs. Findings also indicate that learning the form and function of language is not enough. Other language processes and social interactions enhance learning and support language development. Current research within the English for Specific Purposes field focuses on the description of the language as product of a particular academic/scientific/occupational situation that a student needs to learn to be successful. This dissertation seeks to refocus the direction in ESP research and contribute to the understandings of the process of literacy development in a holistic ESP program.

Abstract:
Results from petrographic analyses, chemical analyses and mineral phase diagram calculations show that staurolite minerals grew in selvages adjacent to quartz veins. Previous studies show the same relationships between quartz veins and garnet, as well as kyanite growth. The selvages are formed as metamorphic fluids flow through cracks, altering the bulk composition by mass transfer and triggers the nucleation and growth of new minerals. A pseudosection for a staurolite absent sample has been calculated using THERMOCALC. No stability field correlates to visually observed mineralogy. This indicates that a reaction forming staurolite never was triggered since no fluids was present during metamorphism.

Abstract:
This study examines socio-economic factors underlying the demand for private tutoring. The analysis utilizes two samples of students from lower- and upper-level secondary schools in Poland based on the PISA 2006 data set. Special attention is paid to channels through which private tutoring may endure socio-economic inequalities, especially in the context of the gender gap in education outcomes. We find that parents' decisions concerning private education are sensitive to student gender, which may raise concerns for policymakers committed to provide equal opportunities and outcomes in education. At the level of gymnasium (lower-level secondary school), female students are more likely to enrol in private tutoring in mathematics than male students. The evidence indicates the opposite with respect to private tutoring in Polish and preparatory courses for the gymnasium final examination. The grade from the final exam does not affect the probability of graduating from gymnasium, but it is used by upper secondary schools for the admission purpose. In upper secondary schools, we find that male students are less likely to participate in private education services than female students. This may be indicative of an increase in power of students in household's decision-making as they graduate from gymnasium. (author's abstract)

ABSTRACT: Skutterudites have been of great interest for thermoelectric applications over the last ten years. Scientific interest has focused on the unique transport properties Skutterudites possess due to the unique crystal structure. Technical interest has grown since it was discovered that some compounds rival the current best thermoelectric materials. To further the understanding of this material system, and optimize its thermoelectric properties, the synthesis and characterization of polycrystalline n- and p-type CoGe&esc;b1&esc;s&&dotb;esc;b5&esc;sSe&esc;b1&esc;s&&dotb;esc;b5&esc;s was undertaken. Structural, morphological, chemical, electrical, thermal and magnetic properties were studied. These data are compared to those of the binary Skutterudite CoSb3. The results of this study show a very sensitive dependence of the physical properties on stoichiometry.
ABSTRACT: While the thermoelectric figure of merit is low in these materials, it is apparent that optimization via doping and "void filling" will lead to improved thermoelectric properties.

Abstract:
This thesis project details research conducted and the method employed to create a tool for acquiring the technical vocabulary from the Utah Driver Handbook. Technical terms were compiled into a vocabulary tool for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. ESL programs within the state have noted the need for materials to help learners acquire this vocabulary. The tool will assist ESL learners preparing for the written driving exam by reinforcing the vocabulary through various iterations, including flash cards, simplified definitions, and an L1 gloss. Learners preparing for the exam will be able to study difficult vocabulary terms using the tool. The tool includes flashcards containing definitions and images, a list of terms with simplified learner definitions, and a list of terms in English with their Spanish equivalent. The tool was created with the intent of providing learners with the ability to revisit difficult terms in a number of ways (i.e. Quizlet, images, simplified definitions, and an L1 gloss). The intended outcome of this research is that the tool will be useful to ESL learners preparing for the written driving exam and be made applicable to learners in other settings.

Jolley, Caitlin. "The Effect of Computer-Based Pronunciation Readings on ESL Learners' Perception and Production of Prosodic Features in a Short-Term ESP Course." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4321.

Abstract:
Recent studies on pronunciation teaching in ESL classrooms have found that the teaching of suprasegmentals, namely stress, pausing, and intonation, has a great effect on improving intelligibility (Derwing, Munro, & Wiebe, 1998; Kang, Rubin, & Pickering, 2010; Morley, 1991). The current project describes the development and implementation of computer-based pronunciation materials used for an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program. The pronunciation program made use of cued pronunciation readings (CPRs) which used suprasegmentals and were developed for English as a second language (ESL) missionaries at the Provo, Utah, Missionary Training Center (MTC). Because there was no pronunciation program in place at the MTC, instructional materials that focused on prosodic features were greatly needed. Missionaries participated in the program anywhere from three to six weeks. Results from the implementation period revealed that missionaries made medium to large gains in their ability to perceive suprasegmentals after using the practice tasks and small-medium gains in their ability to produce suprasegmentals during this short time period. Recommendations for further development, implementation, and testing of similar materials are made for use with individuals in other ESP settings like these missionaries at the MTC.

Abstract:
This study critically examines teacher education in the English system and in Iran so as to compare the two systems with the aim of identifying effective English language teaching strategies that are applicable to the Iranian system. - The reason for examining this topic was the problem that I faced for many years during my teaching in Iranian universities. The main problem was the lack of the use of spoken English by the Iranian university students and graduates. In addition, the context of ESL/ESP in Iranian universities was investigated because little research in Iran has been conducted to explore the influence of oral discourse analysis to improve fluency. The reason is that I believe teacher education, teaching approaches and related issues, such as textbooks and teacher-student relationships, are not separate issues and can be studied as one package. This study includes a critical literature review on methodological elements so as to reach a more practical and effective English language teaching approach in Iran, in particular for the use of English. I was able to identify the central problems of the study, in particular the improvement of speaking skills through, oral discourse analysis. The study has shown how university students can make use of effective strategies through oral discourse analysis introduced to improve their English speaking. The students' needs, the English textbooks, context of situation and the relationships between the students and teachers as well as a critical literature review are studied. Issues such as the need for a more fluent discourse and exchanging views, building on teaching experience, preventing past mistakes, and utilising fully the available resources and the provision of required educational aids are introduced. In this study I shall also present the barriers to innovation and offer suitable solutions. To facilitate the research I employed two types of questionnaires: an English teachers' and students' questionnaire. Twelve interviews were also carried out as a supplementary research instrument to the nine sessions of teaching. The critical literature review, interviews, and the analyses of questionnaires and the teaching sessions supported my initial subjective experience regarding how to resolve the problems of Iranian English Language Teaching. This also resulted in significant improvement of fluency of the participant students. The general discussions, conclusion and recommendations are provided at the end of the study.

Abstract:

Instructors of English as Second Language (ESL) at a private community college had raised concerns regarding Hispanic ESL students not developing sufficient English proficiency. The purpose of this single exploratory case study was to explore the phenomenon brought forward by ESL instructors and share the results with the ESL program and the college. The conceptual framework for this qualitative study was based on the classroom learning motivation theory suggesting that the environment in which a student is learning a new language also plays a major role in second language learning. Data collection was conducted through 3 ESL classroom observations and interviews with 15 community college students. A focus group with 7 different students was used to understand Hispanic ESL students? perspectives about their experience in the college-wide ESL program and issues students face in the ESL program. Data analysis consisted of thematic content analysis, constant comparison, and concurrent data collection and analysis until concept saturation occurred. The findings were that Hispanic ESL students were satisfied with the ESL program. Data triangulation formed 4 themes: students would like to use technology in the classroom, more instances for in-class conversation, to be corrected when they mispronounce a word, and have instructors who spoke Spanish. The recommendations include the creation of a policy to institutionalize professional development to help ESL teachers become aware of the issues that Hispanic ESL students face in the classroom in order to help students achieve English proficiency. This case study served as an example for other institutions to take the initiative learn how Hispanic ESL students perceive ESL instruction and filled the gap in research regarding Hispanic ESL students? perception of ESL programs.

Kallio-Kujala, P. (Pia). "Kielen opetus esi- ja alkuopetuksessa:kuinka kieltä opetetaan esi- ja alkuopetuksessa?" Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2014. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201404121272.

Full text
Abstract:
Opetustuokiot eivät kestä kauaa, joten lasten motivaatio säilyy ja he haluavat oppia. Lapset ovat motivoituneita tekemään tehtäviä, sillä he saavat tehdyistä tehtävistä leimoja. Koulussa lapset joutuvat istumaan paikoillaan suurimman osan koulupäivästä.

Installing an electrical submersible pump can be a way to increase the production in a well. This report will explain some ways the electrical submersible pump can be installed and describe the different components in an electrical submersible pump. The report will also give an insight in how electrical submersible pumps have been used and improvements done to the electrical submersible pump on two different fields. The main part will describe a method to screen wells and find out if installing an electrical submersible pump will be profitable. The method is to estimate future oil production, based on real-time production, with and without an ESP installed, and calculate the net present value. The method takes into account costs of installing, running and removing an electrical submersible pump. The ESP screening tool is screening the wells automatically. In addition it does an ESP simulation to find applicable pumps. For the ten wells screened by the ESP screening tool, the net present values have been negative, due to weak water cut estimation.

Abstract:

If today’s software systems and their complex applications shall be able to integrate with each

other, they have to communicate through services. This service oriented integration can be

accomplished by using Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) where all components are

loosely coupled and communicate in a standardized way. An important part when building an

integrated solution is the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). In this report we will explain the

basics of SOA and take a more detailed look at the world of ESB. The concept of ESB is not

well defined and hence means different things to different people. We are going to present an

interpretation of the ESB and its benefits and disadvantages. To find out what the market

thinks about ESB we have been talking to producers, consultants and customers.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1992 / Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California
This paper presents the tracking systems currently used at ESA. Two systems are described: Meteosat Ranging System (MRS), and Multi-Purpose Tracking System (MPTS). The MRS is presently in operational use on Meteosat. It has been designed to meet the need for a simultaneous multi-point ranging in a channel shared with other services. As a result, a new code ranging technique, based on split-phase-level data formats, has been designed and developed. The MPTS (previously Deep Space Tracking System - DSTS) was first developed and deployed for the Giotto mission. At a later stage, a near-earth capability has been added to the system, thereby creating a truly multi-purpose tracking system. The ranging signal employed in the MPTS makes use of the good properties of both the PN code type of ranging system and the tone ranging system. The concept, architectural design, capabilities and performance of these systems are presented in this paper. Finally, insight into the European Data Relay Satellite and Data Relay User Satellite ranging systems is given.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the minimum reinforcement inconcrete structures and the changes made in theregulations on this with the introduction of EKS 10. EKS10, which was introduced January 1, 2016, is theswedish national annex to the common Eurocode. Theintroduction of EKS 10 has meant that more chaptersfrom Eurocode have been adapted to swedishconditions and that the requirements for minimumreinforcement has been mitigated. As part of the thesis a calculation template has beencreated in Microsoft Excel designed to facilitate thecalculation of minimum reinforcement forByggnadstekniska byrån in Stockholm. In addition tocreating the template, common concrete sections havebeen analyzed with respect to the reinforcementquantities and the economy. The results show that the minimum amount ofreinforcement has been reduced in all of the crosssectionexamined in this thesis. The amendedprovisions have had the consequence that the minimumquantity of rienforcement in respect to reduction ofcrack width in beams and slabs have been decreased bybetween 10 and 32 percent. For walls the minimumamount of vertical reinforcement fallen by 50 percent inslender walls and by 100 percent non slender walls, while the minimum horizontal rienforcement decreasedby 75 and 100 percent respectively.According to the calculations done for a supposedexample floor, this causes a potential reduction inmaterial costs of up to 65 or 118 SEK per square meter, depending on whether or not the walls are regarded asslender.

Abstract:
Increasing concern regarding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts are influencing investor decisions. The growing risk of climate change impacts poses a risk to long-term sustainable economic growth and returns. Additionally, increasing societal concern over corporate ESG impacts also poses a risk to corporate efficiency and success. As a result of these increasing risks investors, both retail and institutional, are participating in ESG investment strategies. Such strategies take into account corporate ESG impacts and behaviors, however, ESG information and data is not easily available. This thesis will examine the current ESG investing landscape, more specifically what investors are demanding. For the most part, investors want reliable data that they can use in their investment strategies, however, the ESG information available is insufficient, unreliable, and incomparable as ESG reporting and disclosures are not currently mandated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). One available solution to this obstacle is the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), which guides corporations on how to optimally disclose on its ESG impacts. Unfortunately, this solution on its own is not enough. SEC intervention is clearly needed to enforce and regulate ESG disclosure to avoid the challenges of voluntary ESG reporting. Furthermore, the concept of materiality implies a corporate duty to report on ESG issues as there is strong evidence indicating its influence over investors' decisions. Likewise, the SEC has a duty to regulate this information. While this thesis suggests the SASB framework as a possible solution to the deficiency of ESG information, its goal is not to solve the issue, but rather merely begin the discussion.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the field of English as a Second Language – ESL – is a relatively new field for study, it grows out of a long tradition of teaching foreign or second languages. However, even without formal instruction in a second language, people throughout history have been learning second – and sometimes third and fourth – languages for purposes of trade, business, politics, social acceptance and even survival. Entering the last quarter of the twentieth century second or foreign language teachers had used three primary methods or approaches in their instruction: the Grammar-Translation method, the Audio-Lingual method, and the Cognitive Code approach. The extent to which any of these methods was successful was determined largely by the individual’s definition of success. In the world of the late 1970’s and the 1980’s, success in foreign or second language teaching has been defined in terms of the students’ ability to speak and understand – to use – the language for purposes of communication or interaction with native speakers of the target language, and to use it appropriately within a given context, at the end of a course of study. In the last fifteen years many new methods and approaches have been introduced and tried in second language classrooms, methods and approaches for which the goal has been communicative competence. Among them are the Silent Way, Total Physical Response, Counseling Learning, Suggestopedia, the Notional-Functional or Communicative Language Teaching approach, and various approaches or methods which use dramatic techniques. Although there may be considerable differences from one method or approach to another, these communicative approaches do share a common core: they involve the whole person – intellectual, emotional and social; they recognize the importance of minimizing stress within the learning environment; and they emphasize the importance of using the language in order to attain communicative competence in that language. One of these methods and one approach – Total Physical Response and Communicative Language Teaching – will be looked at in some detail in order to determine the underlying assumptions, particularly regarding learning and language theory; objectives and goals; syllabus; instructional materials; classroom activities; and the learner and teacher roles. Then a text which purports to reflect the method or approach will be briefly examined to determine the extent to which it does, in fact, reflect the method or approach.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Title: Company size and ESG ratings Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Anton Samuelsson and Inga Kemi Supervisor: Jan Svanberg Date: 2021 – January Aim: Investors play an important role in the global sustainability goals by allocating capital to sustainable companies. Previous research, on the other hand, shows that companies have incentives to be creative with sustainability information, which ESG ratings are largely based on. These incentives can be applied to company size. Larger companies face a higher pressure from society to be sustainably responsible. If the size of the companies is positively related to the ESG rating, it also needs to be accompanied by corresponding change in sustainability performance. If the ESG rating does not reflect sustainability performance, capital risks being allocated to non-sustainable companies. The purpose of this study is therefore to explain the relationship between company size and ESG ratings. Method: The study assumes a positivistic research philosophy with a deductive approach. The study uses a quantitative strategy and a longitudinal design implemented with data of a sample consisting 5 658 unique companies that have received ESG ratings, in the years 2015-2019. The study uses secondary data collected from the database Thomson Reuters Eikon. The data have been analyzed in the statistical software package called SPSS.  Result & Conclusions: The results indicate that company size has a positive relationship with the ESG rating. The results indicate that the positive relationship does not attend on a higher level of sustainability. Thus, the study concludes that ESG rating does not function optimally and is in need of a quick modification Contribution of the thesis: The result provides information for investors interested in investing in sustainable companies. Since the ESG rating does not reflect the sustainability performance, investors should not rely on the ESG-rating in the investment decision. The result also provides information to the rating agencies which provide the ESG-ranking. As the study indicates that there exists a company size bias, actions can be taken to correct the ESG-ranking. The result of this study also provides information to the research field of ESG ratings. Suggestions for future research: A suggestion for further studies is to conduct a similar research but include other rating agencies of ESG ratings.
