Abstract:
This thesis is based on the theoretical knowledge derived from the European integration experience to conduct a comparative study between the EU and ASEAN. This thesis investigates how endogenous factors affect how exogenous factors influence the EU and ASEAN institution building process within the European Single Market and ASEAN Free Trade Area. It argues that ASEAN members' domestic political interest and national preference formed within their cultural context as a result of their informal institutional economic cooperation. The thesis reviews literature and finds that the European model cannot be simply applied to ASEAN, thus a combination of new regionalism and liberal intergovernmentalism seeks to contribute alternatives to different aspects in the analysis of ASEAN regional integration.

Hoste, Amaury. "Towards a Mercosur regional development fund? : transferring European Union experience." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2003. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/114/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the extent to which Mercosur member states can establish a common approach to regional development, and what Mercosur can learn from the European Union experience of regional development funds. Through an extensive statistical analysis this thesis maps and profiles regional disparities in Mercosur in order to expose the nature and scale of the regional development challenge faced by the region. It argues that the creation of a Mercosur Regional Development Fund (MRDF), although not the sole solution, is one way forward towards the reduction of regional disparities. The thesis then proposes a theoretical framework which can be employed to account for prospective policy transfers between two supranational associations such as the EU and Mercosur. A critical analysis of the EU regional development fund experience leads the thesis to propose that there are some key EU principles which Mercosur can apply. Finally, the thesis discusses the objectives and main characteristics of a MRDF in terms of how it might best address the needs of the Mercosur less developed regions.

Alexiou, Constantinos. "On macroeconomic policy, effective demand and unemployment : the European experience." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2001. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/2975/.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the EU region the EU member states, by discarding their right to exercise fiscal and monetary policy independently, have signed up to a set of rules and regulations that will eventually lead to European and Monetary Union (EMU). These set of rules as reflected by both the Maastricht criteria as well as the Stability and Growth Pact, contain no reference to either the unacceptable levels of European unemployment or the balance of trade position. The ensuing wave of criticism directed at the motivation as well as the rationale behind such a stringent set of rules and regulations has caused a lot of uncertainty to emerge as to what the future of such an economic venture would be. The primary objective of this thesis is to investigate the existing problem of European unemployment within the new economic environment that emerged after the demise of Bretton Woods and most crucially after the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty. Further, it develops an alternative demand-based macroeconomic framework on the basis of which the undertaken econometric analysis provides evidence in support of our approach. In particular, by examining the way macroeconomic policy has evolved after the demise of Bretton Woods and questioning the premise with which the new economic orthodoxy has established its authority in euroland, we review the current position of EMU countries in relation to the convergence criteria. It is argued that the deflationary bias in conjunction with the institutional arrangements peculiar to an independent European central bank (ECB) undermine the potential of future economic policies to deal with persistent levels of unemployment. Moreover, it is sustained that the absence of a strategy tailored to stimulate economic activity together with the underlying deflationary nature implied by convergence criteria, may be potential factors that contribute to the perpetuation of high levels of unemployment. Lack of demand in conjunction with the prevalent instability in the labour markets have harmed productive efficiency and most importantly the creation of additional capacity on which employment could be encouraged. Therefore, a case for policies designed to boost aggregate demand is made. In pursuing our objective, a post Keynesian macroeconomic framework provides the theoretical underpinnings on which the empirical investigation is based. On the methodological front, panel data analysis is applied to EU countries. The results obtained suggest that unemployment in Europe is a by-product of economic policies devoid of any measures to affect demand as well as supply factors. Moreover, on the basis of the evidence, the deflationary bias that characterises the EU economies especially after the ratification of the Maastricht treaty appears to have dampened economic activity and hence employment in most EU member states. Some further investigation into the rationale behind the introduction of the Stability Pact yields additional evidence casting considerable doubts on two of the most fundamental reasons put forward in defence of the Stability pact, namely the fear for interest rate spillovers across the EU economies and the significant role of national savings in conditioning investment. Finally a concluding chapter provides some alternative policy recommendations.

Liu, Cindy Hsin-Ju 1979. "The emotion experience of Chinese American and European American children." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/8288.

Emotion experiences such as internalized distress have been described mostly in European Americans and adults in the psychological literature and less in Asian American children. Associations between emotion experience and expressivity have been established mostly through samples of European American children. Finally, the functionality of emotion experience and expressivity across cultural norms has not been examined thoroughly, especially in ethnic minority or bicultural children. This is of concern given that cultural ideals for emotion differ across cultural groups. This dissertation incorporates a cultural perspective to understanding the emotion experience while also relying on the functionalist approach as an organizing framework to understand expressivity in children from an Asian background. This study examined 70 Chinese American and 71 European American mothers and their 5 to 7 year old children. Mother and child reports of children's internalized V experience were obtained. Observers also rated children's expressivity in a frustration- eliciting task, alone and in the presence of their mothers. The first objective of the dissertation was to characterize the emotion experiences of Chinese American and European American young children, in particular, internalized distress. The second objective of this dissertation sought to observe children's expressivity in response to a frustrating situation, with and without their mothers. As a whole, Chinese American children experienced greater internalized distress than European American children based on mother and child reports. Contrary to hypotheses, Chinese American children were just as expressive as European American children during the frustration eliciting task, especially when mothers were present in the room. Furthermore, it appeared that European American children with greater child-reported anxiety and mother-reported depression showed less increase in their expressivity than all the other children when their mothers entered into the room. This study explored the role of culture in the socialization of emotion and the functionality of expressivity in solitary and social situations. Overall, this dissertation suggests that cultural, situational, and internal emotion experience are factors which concurrently play a role in children's emotion expressivity.

Sessions, John G. "Unemployment, earnings and absence : British and European labour market experience." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1998. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2274/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comprises five chapters that together offer some contribution to the economics of unemployment, earnings and absence. Chapter One: Unemployment Stigma investigates the implications of an occupational hierarchy on labour market behaviour. The ideas developed are applied, firstly, to a model of the wage curve where it is shown that the relationship between unemployment and pay may be upward slopping over some range; and secondly, to a non-shirking model of efficiency wages where the potential for multiple labour market equilibria is highlighted. Chapter Two: The Economics of Absence investigates the relatively neglected issue of worker absence. The Chapter reviews and offers some perspective to existing studies of absence, develops a theoretical model of absence that incorporates both the supply and demand aspects of the employment relation, and sets out an empirical analysis of the relationship between absence and labour supply. Chapter Three: Absence and Profit Sharing explores the relationship between employee sharing and worker absence using data from a panel of 127 French firms over the period 1981-1991. The results suggest that both profit sharing and employee share ownership schemes are associated with significantly lower absence, the extent of the decline depending crucially upon whether or not the schemes operate exclusively of one another. An interesting question also emerges concerning the relationship between contractual flexibility and absence behaviour, the empirical analysis suggesting that a more widespread use of part-time contracts may act to reduce the incidence of absence in firms operating profit sharing schemes. Chapter Four: U.K. Unemployment profiles the incidence of unemployment in the U.K. over the period 1985-91 by quantifying the differential probabilities of unemployment faced by particular groups within the population. The results indicate that, even after controlling for a plethora of demographic characteristics, regional disparities in unemployment risk are prevalent. Chapter Five: Trade and Trade Unions examines the effects of international trade on the employment and earnings prospects of a sample of U.K. workers. The Chapter develops a model of international oligopoly with generally unionised labour markets which suggests that an increased exposure to trade is more likely to impact negatively upon the wage (employment) prospects of workers the greater (lesser) the degree of union bargaining power to which they are subservient. The empirical analysis in the Chapter offers substantive support for this proposition.

Dounis, Nikolaos. "The internal audit role during mergers & acquisitions : the European Union experience." Thesis, City University London, 2007. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/8499/.

Full text
Abstract:
Mergers and acquisitions represent a dynamic process of corporate culture and strategy. Empirical evidence indicates a high rate of failure of M&A's to create value for the shareholders of the firms. On the other hand, internal audit has evolved dramatically during the last years from its traditional role of control orientation to a more proactive, risk based and consultancy role. But despite this evolution, empirical evidence showed that internal audit function has no effective contribution during the M&A activity. This study analyzes the present level of involvement of internal audit function during the M&A activity and compare it with the preferred and ideal (normative) level. This comparison leads to the identification of possible gaps between these three different models. This gap analysis identifies the possible reasons of this low level of involvement, as well as, possible means and actions in order to participate more actively to the specialized M&A projects. Finally, we formulated and validated a best practices model of a more expanded level of internal audit involvement at the different stages of M&A's, as well as, a list of potential prerequisites and actions for this expansion.

Carlson, Joel. "From Spion Kop to the Somme: Experience of warfare and its imperial context." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/27667.

Full text
Abstract:
The First World War caught Europe's military establishments largely unprepared for a conflict that exceeded contemporary expectations of length, scale and advances in technology. The British Army was no exception. The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) may have entered the war as one of the most professional forces in the field, but throughout the war British generalship suffered from a distinct lack of imagination in their attempts at coping with the realities of modern warfare. Indeed, the names of such battles as Loos, Arras, the Somme, and Passchendaele evoke images of tragic and unnecessary waste of thousands of lives. Amongst all the major protagonists, Britain alone possessed a truly extensive catalogue of experience pointing to what a future conflict on continental Europe might entail, courtesy of the many colonial wars Britain fought during the nineteenth century. During the Omdurman campaign (1898) and the South African War (1899-1902) in particular, the brutal effectiveness of the machine gun, smokeless gunpowder, quick-firing artillery, trench warfare, and the complexities of organizing large formations were clearly demonstrated. These lessons seemed mostly forgotten or ignored, despite the existence of substantial reform sentiment and current criticisms of the Army's performance in Africa prior to 1914. Why had the British military failed to capitalize on its experiences in its African campaigns and bring those lessons with them into the First World War? Almost the entire British Army High Command from 1914 to 1918 had participated in the Sudanese and South African campaigns, yet virtually to the man they proved remarkably resilient in rejecting the lessons on modern warfare learned by the lower ranks at a very high human cost. Even when these lessons were reinforced by the observations of British officers during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), they went largely ignored or misinterpreted. What prevented the senior British officers from heeding the voices of commonsense? Experiences during the South African War were considered anomalous and it was suggested impossible to apply to a European context. There was also a general trend of imparting more emphasis on personal training and qualities of elan as the best method of dealing with advanced battlefield technology. Britain's social hierarchy also played a part in this process, abetted by the fact that the majority of senior officers were from the Cavalry Arm, perhaps the most resistant to any sort of change or reform and comprised mainly of members of Britain's elite class. In addition, the British Army, like any other army in history, suffered from an institutional unwillingness to adopt new ideas and technology. A notoriously spendthrift British peace time government compounded the situation by ensuring that not only would there be substantial resistance to reform but that any reform would be constrained by tight fiscal considerations of Parliament and His Majesty's Treasury. This thesis will examine the reasons why the lessons of imperial and African conflicts were largely dismissed by military strategists on the eve of the Great War and reveal how such thinking lay in a long running conflict between the Victorian outlook on life and the new realities of the world ushered in by Industrialism. With the rise of Industrialism in Britain, this clash began to take form as the established British elite class saw a host of social ills residing within the movement that threatened their perceived order of society, especially their place at the top of that order. This clash of "progress versus nostalgia," a term coined by Martin J. Weiner in his book English Culture and the Decline of the Industrial Spirit 1850-1980, was a driving force behind the British High Command's struggle to undo the reform efforts of men such as Field Marshal Roberts and Richard Haldane as the Victorian/Edwardian elite class sought to bring this conflict to a resolution. The end result was that in 1914, the British Army, having only partially benefited from its African experience, was still in a state of transition and even those small gains had vanished along with most of the original BEF by early 1915.

Abstract:
In this thesis, Greek, Portuguese and Spanish accession of European Union is investigated. Agricultural production, consumption and trade patterns of Greece, Portugal and Spain have changed by the full application of Common Agricultural Policy. The commodity composition of these countries experienced an adjustment, too. The production of vegetables, fruits, fish and other typical Mediterranean products have increased. The composition of consumption has moved from low-income elastic products to high-income elastic products. The agricultural trade direction of these countries has shifted to the European Union. Trade with neighbouring EU member states increased relatively faster than the trade increase with other members of the European Union. Most of the trade volume of these countries is with the Mediterranean countries of the European Union.

Abstract:
Protection of employees in the event of a change of employer in Serbia was first regulated by the Labour Act (2005). This was a result of the harmonization of Serbian legislation with Council Directive 2001/23/EC, while the effect of the European Court of Justice jurisprudence was negligible. Protection is guaranteed regardless of whether the company identity has been preserved or not, thereby making it more favourable than the European concept of transfer of undertaking. Nevertheless, the relevant provisions of the Labour Act have often been evaded in practice, especially when it comes to the application of the principle of preservation of employment. This was facilitated by the content of certain legal provisions. There is a notable need for their improvements, in order to enable employees to continue to work for the transferee under the same working conditions and be protected from dismissals exclusively or predominantly motivated by the change of employer.

Sweeney, Robert. "The political economy of cross-border financialisation and financial stability : essays on European experience." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/21709/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an investigation of a number of themes in financialisation and financial stability in a European and cross-border context. Continental European countries are the primary objects of interest, though the US and the UK are also considered given the relationship and similarities between the different regions. The PhD follows a three essay structure but with several unifying threads. Among them are financialisation as a demand-led process (that is, the growth of finance has been driven by factors external to financial markets), comparative and cross-border dynamics, interactions between institutional investors and the banking system, and housing market dynamics. In particular, the thesis examines the transformation and growth of banking activities, the nature and financial stability consequences of the expansion of financial trading generally and also proprietary trading in particular, and the determinants of cross-border debt flows in Europe in the 2000s. From these a number of diverse policy implications emerge. Common among them, and a unifying theme of the PhD, is that financialisation needs to be managed as opposed to reversed. The PhD adds to existing research on financialisation in a number of ways. The chapter on the growth of banking identifies the aggregate growth of investment banking as driven by the increase in scale and scope of modern capital markets. Deregulation and/or disintermediation processes have not been the driving force. The imposition of the first Basel Accord is found to be the largest single factor in the rise of mortgage lending over the past four decades or so. A capital market-led view of investment banking is a novel approach, whereas the invocation of the Basel agreements in this study is one of greater emphasis compared to existing literature. The following chapter finds that in the post-Bretton Woods landscape Europe graduated from recurrent currency crises to repeated credit-based housing crises. Financial trading has recently played a more indirect role in financial instability through the provision of liquidity to the banking system. Proprietary trading is largely dependent on the institutional investor-led increase in trading volume and, while important, has not posed the same threat to stability as housing market dynamics have. These points have not been adequately appreciated in the financialisation literature to date. The final content chapter develops this point further. It finds that institutional investors were the principal driving force in the expansion of debt-based capital flows in Europe in the 2000s. This point has not been appreciated thus far. Position taking by large banking groups was important, but banks largely availed of opportunities for gain as they arose. Institutional investors, in contrast, had a structural need for those instruments that were central to the expansion of flows. This dissertation utilises institutional and historical political economy analysis with frequent use of descriptive statistics. While aspects of the social world occasionally exhibit relatively stable relationships and forms (for example, lognormal distribution of income, Pareto distribution of city size, and so on), this is not the norm. Typically in quantitative social science and economics such forms are assumed a priori, and quantitative techniques such as regression then applied. However, there are reasons to be doubtful of this approach in general, which leads us to favour institutional analysis. For one, free-will imparts on economic agents behaviour that eludes capture by a formal deterministic or stochastic model. A deterministic (or stochastic) view of human agency violates our everyday intuitions that we have control over our actions and lives. The fact that people in general try to influence some outcome in their lives rather than just stay in bed because it has already been determined implies they believe their actions have the capacity to affect their world. Second, the social world is highly complex. Independent of free-will, the conditions under which a deterministic or stochastic model can be applied are highly circumscribed outside of laboratory conditions. Lawson's (1997) example of a leaf blowing in the wind is a case in point. The problem of complexity applies, writ large, to human action. Further, institutional reasons include distortions arising from model-induced bias reinforcement, publishing bias, and issues surrounding the cleanliness of data. It is for such reasons that quantitative modelling is deemed inappropriate. Institutional and historical analysis also allows the examination of contextual factors which enable interpretation of events, processes, and so on. Some of the dissertation's findings complement existing research. Others entail a difference in emphasis while others still are minority positions and contrary to a number of presuppositions held in the financialisation literature.

Full text
Abstract:
Regional integration in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) received a boost in 2007 when they explicitly announced their objective to build an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), i.e. a single market and production base in the region. Pursuing the ASEAN single market means that ASEAN shares with the European Union (EU) the common interests of developing regional economic integration, taking action to combat the cost of market fragmentation. The aim of this thesis is to put forward suggestions directed at the realisation of the ASEAN single market in the field of economic integration and cooperation in the business sector based upon the experience of the EU in developing its internal market. To achieve this objective, the thesis investigates current conditions for business cooperation and collaboration and analyses existing barriers to effective cooperation in ASEAN. In the framework of a comparative analysis of the two regional developments where it is relevant, the analysis is mainly based on library-based research complemented by the socio-legal research method of interviewing ASEAN experts and also, businesses within ASEAN. The major barriers identified in cross-border business activities are based on ASEAN Member Countries’ protectionist techniques to control foreign inward investments. The ‘ASEAN Way’ of consensus-based decision-making and a lack of compliance and enforcement mechanisms and of working judicial institutions obstruct the development of efficient mechanisms for the purpose and also, the efficacy of the AEC initiatives and the ASEAN industrial economic cooperation schemes. Considering the limits of the related ASEAN instruments in facilitating corporate collaboration and promoting intra-ASEAN trade and investments, four different areas of mechanisms drawn from the EU’s experience are considered. After conducting an evaluation of the viability and the potential benefits of those mechanisms in ASEAN, the thesis proposes that the most useful area, promising practical benefits, would be the introduction of uniform and universally recognised business entities to facilitate collaboration and cooperation within ASEAN. Recognition of such entities as national entities within every Member Country will help to obviate these protectionist tendencies and improve the development of intra-ASEAN trade.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of a trademark is to facilitate the communication of information between consumers and producers about their products and services to those who wish or need to buy them. The consumer needs to be able to depend on the message the mark conveys to ensure they are purchasing what will fulfil their requirements. In the modern market place, the choice appears endless, and indeed the principles of free trade espoused by the European treaties has heightened the opportunities for cross-national traders to sell their goods, and increased the options available to consumers. When this occurs, so does the availability of information which a purchaser may find the need to seek through to ascertain what he or she wants in an complex and often confusing exercise in differentiation. It is therefore in the interests of producers and customers that those who manufacture goods or provide services develop a mark which identifies their wares and helps provide feedback measured by success; consequently an exchange of information. Consumers are able to make their preferences known via choice, or otherwise, of the mark. Modern business methods and the vast array of marketing opportunities are not only placing the role and function of the trademark at the forefront of consumer protection, but also developing the concept of the mark as an asset of considerable value in itself. This increases its vulnerability to competitive interference and the proposition that it should receive enhanced protection in law. Somewhat perversely, it has resulted in a body of legislation and jurisprudence which lacks cogency and coherence. The purpose of this thesis, accordingly, is to examine the causes thereof by evaluating the current European trademarks protection system to ascertain the contribution they actually make to promotion of free competition and the movement of goods or services upon which that substantial market is predicated. It will examine the impact of the development of protection granted to the trademark with particular reference to the use of online keywords advertising service and focus on the effect of relatively new theories of what functions qualify to be shielded from harm from competitive others. This has expanded beyond the conventional boundaries of source ‘origin’ protection, espoused to primarily protect consumers from confusion in their choice making process. Advertising and investment functions as separate principle are recognised by the Court of Justice of the European Union, but do not appear to qualify for safeguarding in the context of the competitive free market. In fact, it will be shown that giving excessive shelter from harm to all functions which may affect the value of the trademark will limit, even jeopardise, third party competitor and consumer issues. It will inhibit the use of the e-commerce online keywords advertising service which assists third parties to promote alternative competing goods or services and so reduce consumer choice by restriction of online information. It is suggested that proper, clear defences must be guaranteed under the law so third parties may gauge their actions to avoid infringement of trademark owner rights whilst promoting their own products, and accordingly strike the necessary balance between the different competing interests of trademark owners, third parties competitors, and consumers.

Abstract:
Aeronautical revenue from landing and handling charges to carriers is falling significantly below 60% of total revenue and will not persist as the main source of income for airports. Airports in Europe cannot continue to rely on profits from airlines; operating companies need to improve the competitiveness through commercial income from different traveler types. The purpose of this multiple case study was to understand the elements of successful sales strategies by concessionaires (retailers) at the metropolitan airport system of Zurich and Basel in hopes of improving the nonaeronautical revenue from leisure travelers, a price-sensitive customer segment. The conceptual framework was corporate strategic planning with the underlying concept of sustainable business operations. Semistructured interviews included 9 executives and senior managers of concessions and retail operations at Zurich International and Basel EuroAirport, and covered major themes such as managing the shopping experience of passengers as well as collaboration between concessionaires, airports, and airlines. The key findings, which emerged from an inductive analysis of the data, were that the identification of personalized offerings and the inclusion of individual travelers' needs are required to ensure a flexible approach by each airport and shop location throughout the terminal. The collected data contained indicators for holistic and targeted concepts by retail concessions in cooperation with airport stakeholders. Social implications include sustainable retail strategies by promoting value adding products and services, improving the passenger's travel experience, and ensuring the profitability of concessionaires in a changing aviation market.

Sharmeen, T. "Menopausal symptom experience at midlife among Bangladeshi immigrants, Sedentees, and European neighnours : a cross-cultural study." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1349004/.

Full text
Abstract:
Menopause is widely accepted as a complex individual bio-psycho-socio-cultural process which varies within and between cultures and which changes over time. Most studies on menopausal symptoms and symptom experiences during midlife have been conducted on Western populations. There have been very few studies on menopausal women or menopausal symptom experiences in South Asia and none, to my knowledge, have been attempted in Bangladesh. Moreover, little is known about the menopausal and midlife symptoms, experience of menopause and perception towards menopause among Bangladeshi women and Migrant Bangladeshi women now living in Western countries. Hence, a cross-sectional study was initiated with an exploratory study design to compare frequency of symptom reporting among: 1) Bangladeshi women who migrated to the UK; 2) Sedentees still living in Bangladesh, and 3) a group of UK women of European origin. Data on socio-demographics, socio-economics, migration history, symptom experiences, reproductive history, physical activities and anthropometry were also collected. Qualitative data on Bangladeshi women’s perceptions, beliefs and attitudes regarding menopause and menopausal symptom experiences were explored. The primary hypothesis tested in this study was: Sylheti women who migrated to London will have a higher frequency of symptoms associated with midlife and the menopausal transition compared to Bangladeshi Sedentees due to lack of English skill, extended family support, socio-economic stress and social isolation. This hypothesis led to the prediction is that Sylheti Migrants will have a higher frequency of symptoms associated with midlife and menopause and will report a higher frequency of somatic, emotional, vasomotor and sexual symptoms compared to Bangladeshi Sedentees. The prediction was upheld for somatic and emotional symptoms but not for vasomotor and sexual symptoms. Bangladeshi Migrants therefore reported higher frequencies of somatic and emotional symptoms compared to the Sedentees. Moreover, both Migrants and Sedentees reported significantly higher somatic and psychosomatic symptoms compared to the Europeans. However, symptoms that are attributed directly to menopause (vasomotor and sexual symptoms) showed no significant differences between the two Bangladeshi groups. Long-term illnesses such as cardio vascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and osteoporosis rather than menopausal status per se are significant factors explaining an increase in somatic and psychosomatic complaints associated with midlife. Perceptions and attitudes associated with menopausal symptom experience were mostly positive among Bangladeshi women and menopause was perceived as a neutral phase. Qualitative findings indicate that the meanings of menopause in Bangladesh are dependent on the social and cultural environment.

Abstract:
The European Union (EU) spent €1 billion per year on Higher Education Initiatives between 2004 and 2009. Amongst these was Erasmus Mundus which brought international, Masters-level students into Europe to study at three or more European universities in different countries. This research aimed to understand the approach to internationalisation behind the EU’s investment in the initiative and how that relates to students’ understandings of Europe and experience of internationalisation. From an analysis of the policy documentation, the argument is made that the Erasmus Mundus initiative drew on economic, cross-cultural, relational and educational approaches to internationalisation. Elements of these approaches affected Europe’s ability to influence students through Soft Power, defined as ’the ability to get what you want through attraction rather than through coercion or payments’ (Nye, 2005:11). In particular, it is argued that the view of Soft Power in these documents relies on the development of Social Capital between students, defined as ’social networks and the norms of reciprocity associated with them’ (Putnam, 2002:4). This research explored students’ experience of internationalisation in a particular iteration of Erasmus Mundus. Questionnaires (n=48) and semi-structured interviews (n=23) were coded and analysed, using Soft Power and Social Capital to inform the analysis. The data shows that an economic approach to internationalisation was an important influence on the students which is in part due to the influence of a neoliberal rhetoric on the initiative and on the students whilst in Europe. There are also examples of networking, reflective of relational and cross-cultural approaches to internationalisation. However, the findings from this research suggest that an economic approach to internationalisation has been a particular influence on the students’ understanding of Europe and experience of internationalisation, showing evidence of Soft Power attraction by the EU through the design of this initiative.

The telecommunications industry was long regarded to be one of "natural monopoly". Technological development has, however, changed the situation in the industry fundamentally: with the introduction of digital wireless telephony (also called "GSM " or "second generation (2G)), competition could effectively be introduced into the industry, as the new networks rely on antennas instead of fixed cable networks. This made it possible, and in the presence of large numbers of subscribers necessary, to build multiple mobile telephone networks in one country.

Iannone, Pasquale. "Childhood and the Second World War in the European fiction film." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5654.

Full text
Abstract:
The classically idyllic, carefree world of childhood would appear to be diametrically opposed to the horrors of war and world-wide conflict. However, throughout film history, filmmakers have continually turned to the figure of the child as a prism through which to examine the devastation caused by war. This thesis will investigate the representation of childhood experience of the Second World War across six fiction films: Roberto Rossellini’s Paisan (1946) and Germany Year Zero (1947), René Clément’s Forbidden Games (1952), Andrei Tarkovsky’s Ivan’s Childhood (1962), Jan Nemec’s Diamonds of the Night (1964) and Elem Klimov’s Come and See (1985). Spanning forty years, I will examine how these films, whilst sharing many thematic and formal concerns, are unquestionably diverse. They are products of specific socio-cultural milieux, but are also important works in the evolution of cinematic style in art cinema. The films can be aligned to various trends such as neorealism (Paisan, Germany Year Zero), Modernism (Ivan’s Childhood, Diamonds of the Night) and Neo-expressionism (Come and See). Structured in four parts – on witness, landscape, loss and play – I will suggest that just filmmakers utilise childhood experience – often fragmented and chaotic in terms of temporality - to reflect the chaos of war. The first part of my study focuses on the child as witness, the child as Deleuzian seer. I draw on the writings of Gilles Deleuze as well as post-Deleuzian interventions of Tyrus Miller and Jaimey Fisher to argue that whilst Deleuze’s characterization of the child figure as passive is somewhat problematic when applied to the neorealist works, it can, however, be more rigorously applied to Come and See, a film in which, I suggest, the child embodies a much purer form of the Deleuzian seer. In the second part of my study, drawing on the work of Martin Lefebvre and Sandro Bernardi amongst others, I discuss the representation of landscape and its relation to the figure of the child. The third part will examine the representation of loss as well as the symbolic quality of water and its links to the maternal with reference to psychoanalytic theory and the poetry of Rabindranath Tagore. The fourth and final part also draws on psychoanalysis in examining the role of play in the six films with particular reference to the work of D.W Winnicott and Lenore Terr. My study seeks to contribute to the comparatively under-explored subject of the child in film through close analysis of film aesthetics including mise-en-scène, editing, and film sound.

Abstract:
This Thesis seeks to better understand the factors that shape the school experience of children in residential care and analyse how mentoring programmes can help enhance it. A series of three studies were designed in the context of a European social mentoring pilot project targeted at children in residential care and focused on their education improvement. Results showed that school satisfaction was an important component of the subjective well-being of children in residential care, and satisfactory relationships were highlighted as the strongest predictor of higher school satisfaction levels among these children. On the other hand, the findings indicated that by providing supportive, caring, trusting and steady relationships, mentoring programmes may create an opportunity for promoting the well-being and resilience of children in care as well as their social capital. Mentors also played a specific, unique and supplementary role within the existing network of supportive adults in residential care contexts.

Pon, Kevin. "An evaluation of the internationalisation process in schools of management in France : the experience of four schools of management." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/299499.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to the globalisation of the corporate world, business and management education has to respond by internationalising itself in order to prepare young graduates for the employment market. This doctoral thesis examines how four small to medium sized business and management schools in France are reacting to an ever increasing globalisation process. Evidence suggests that these schools have been experiencing an increase in their internationalisation process at the dawn of the twenty-first century which can be considered as somewhat later than the more prestigious schools both in France and elsewhere. This is due to changing balance between the traditional rationales for internationalisation and also the emerging of new rationales such as customer satisfaction and survival. A case study approach was adopted to study four business schools in different regions of France, all of which were linked to and managed by the local Chamber of Commerce. The research reveals that the timing for this internationalisation process is due to several factors which have both pushed forward and prevented international development. Even when there is a clearly defined international strategy the development is not linear since the international strategy is only one strategy amongst others within the institution and at certain times other strategies may be more important and thus prevent international development. All four schools have clearly used alliances and networks to obtain the necessary resources to carry out their internationalisation; this is seen on an academic, economic and staffing levels. As regards approach, a clear pattern has emerged in all four schools observed in that they have adopted a transitional marginal approach where the internationalisation begins slowly from the outer or peripheral part of the institution and gradually moves inward to affect the institution as a whole. This approach has given rise to several outcomes that prove to be advantageous to the institution as a whole, such as an improvement in the quality of teaching, learning and research. This transitional marginal approach has also reduced the risk of the possible forces against change which are very often present especially in the world of higher education. However, the research suggests that this was not an intended outcome of the strategy but nevertheless it is seen as a possible recommendation for other organisations to take into consideration. The findings also reveal that in the future, this model may become circular or spiral in structure since one outcome related to internationalisation is the globalisation of the institutions themselves where they are beginning to be present in other countries. This again, is seen as a marginal activity.

Bertolini, Alessio. "The experience of labour market disadvantage : a comparison of temporary agency workers in Italy and the UK." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29563.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past decades, European labour markets have undergone profound changes, witnessing a process of liberalisation and flexibilisation, in part through the spread of various forms of atypical employment. These new forms of employment have been argued to be of generally lower quality than standard employment, presenting several disadvantages across a range of employment-related dimensions. Nevertheless, the disadvantages experienced by atypical workers are argued to differ depending on nationally specific institutional settings, as employment regulations, welfare institutions and collective representation are commonly claimed to play a significant role in the shaping of disadvantage. Within the field of comparative political economy, a literature has emerged dealing with issues of dualisation and insider-outsider divides associated with these new forms of employment, mainly focusing on institutional divides in employment and welfare protection and political representation between standard and atypical workers and their consequences in terms of social inequalities. Authors within this literature have argued divides to be different across groups of countries within Europe. Specifically, an important distinction has been claimed to exist between Liberal countries, where divides are argued to be limited, and Southern European countries, where they are said to be among the highest. But this literature has mostly considered disadvantages from an institutional perspective, without empirically investigating whether institutional divides actually translate into individual disadvantages. At the same time, within sociology, authors have investigated individual disadvantages experienced by atypical workers under the broad concept of precariousness. Nevertheless, these scholars have not provided a systematic analysis of the relation between different institutional frameworks and individual disadvantages. This thesis aims at partly bridging these two literatures, by providing an analysis of how different institutional settings impact on disadvantages as experienced at the individual level. To do this, this thesis explores the disadvantages experienced by a specific category of atypical workers, namely temporary agency workers. It focuses on two countries which have been argued to present very different institutional divides across a broad range of employment-related dimensions. The UK is seen as the main example of Liberal country in the European context, providing limited employment protection to all workers, a fragmented system of industrial relations and a social protection system mainly based on means-testing and mostly aimed at poverty prevention. In contrast, Italy has been considered one of the European countries with the most highly segmented labour market, with high employment protection for core workers but very little for workers at the margin. At the same time, both its industrial relations system and it social protection system are said to strongly discriminate against people in atypical forms of employment. These claims are explored through semi-structured interviews with temporary agency workers in the service sector, trade unionists and other relevant stakeholders involved in atypical employment. The study demonstrates that temporary agency workers in the two countries experience partly different disadvantages. Although differences in the institutional settings can be said to contribute to explaining these differences, the analysis reveals a more complex picture. I show that institutional divides do not necessarily translate into individual disadvantages, as they interact among each other and with other factors in moulding individual experiences in a variety of ways. At the same time, individual disadvantages are present even when no institutional divide exists. Thus, the study argues that considering disadvantages only in terms of institutional divides oversimplifies a more complex and varied reality, and calls for more attention to be paid to how institutional divides are translated into individual disadvantages.

This dissertation addresses how psychotherapists understand, navigate, experience and integrate spirituality in psychotherapy. Postmodern and social constructionist views underpin the qualitative approach implemented collaboratively and reflexively. A purposive sample of 15 Western European psychotherapists was approached using semi-structured interviews. Transcripts were analyzed inductively by way of thematic analysis. Besides a Roman Catholic priest and psychologist, all other participants conveyed an open, fluid and non-religious spirituality integrating different perspectives and traditions. Spiritual themes where approached from a client centered, humanistic perspective independent from the participants` original psychotherapy training. Differences in the participants` religious and cultural background did not seem to be determinant of the clinicians` views or interventions which seem to integrate different clinical approaches in a heuristic manner. The generated findings suggest psychotherapists understand spirituality as a valid construct, independent from religion, in keeping with other studies. It is recommended an updating of training programs for psychotherapists including relevant spiritual, existential and religious themes, considering a non-materialistic scientific paradigm and acknowledging personal experiences as a source of spiritual knowledge. Power issues in the exclusion of spirituality in psychotherapy are discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis examines martial race ideology in the British Army during the mid-nineteenth century. A “martial race” was a group of people that the British considered to excel in the art of warfare due to biological and cultural characteristics. This thesis examines perceived “martial” natures or lack thereof of the Highland Scots and the Irish during this era. Central to this analysis are the Crimean War (1853-1856) and the Indian Mutiny of 1857 which provided opportunities for soldiers to display their “martial” qualities. The Crimean War was the first war where the daily newspapers covered every aspect of the war using correspondents, and it gave soldiers the chance to gain recognition through this medium. The Indian Mutiny represented a crisis for Britain, and it gave soldiers the opportunity to be recognized as “stabilizers of the empire.” However, despite their similarities, the Highland regiments became some of the most revered regiments while the Irish came to be seen as untrustworthy, leading many in the British government to initiate efforts to decrease the role that the Irish played in Britain’s conflicts. This reluctance was due to the turmoil that erupted as a result of the anti-Union Fenian Brotherhood in Ireland during the 1860s. The difficulty in stabilizing Ireland in the wake of Fenian terrorist attacks also exposed old prejudices of the Irish related to religion, race, and class. This was evidenced through parliamentary debates and British newspapers reporting on the crises.

Abstract:
During the term of 2010 we received a Minor Field Study scholarship from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), which allowed us to do a two-month study in Tirana, Albania. The study examined one of Europe’s most common tools when it comes to assisting candidate countries, potential candidate countries, and neighbouring countries of the European Union: Twinning. The idea of Twinning is that the beneficiary country gets assistance from EU member state institutions in order to develop its own institutions, in terms of standards of quality and safety. We have observed a Twinning project structured in the form of a consortium between the Swedish Tax Agency and the French Tax Agency assisting the Albanian General Tax Directorate (GTD) in Tirana. The study highlights the relationship between the four different actors involved in the ongoing project (EU, Sweden, France and Albania) and Twinning as a working method. More specifically we investigated (A) the transition from an old to a new system and if any difficulties emerged in the process, (B) what necessary factors are needed for a successful Twinning project, and (C) how the actors’ different backgrounds affect the project. The result we gained from the field study shows that the transition towards a new system progresses well as long as the project follows the main principles of Twinning: partnership and cooperation. These two principles allow the Albanian GTD to direct the project and decide the direction of their Europeanization process. Twinning generates many positive aspects e.g. institutional understanding and friendship, and it brings the cooperating nations closer to each other. The difficulties that have emerged have been technical or when one of the actors has not followed the structure of the project. These difficulties are natural in the beginning of any project since structures and relations take time to establish. Three main qualities affect the outcome of this Twinning project: experience, flexibility and communication. Actors involved in the project have to be experienced, in form of personal as well as institutional experience. Besides, they have to be flexible since the project follows the development of society where unpredicted needs can emerge. Most importantly, communication has to be free from friction between the actors in order to maintain the partnership principle of Twinning. Our analysis shows that the outcomes of this Twinning project are mutually shaped between the actors involved. Therefore, the emphasis should be on personal abilities to mutually create a working structure that follows the principles of Twinning.
